so do these devices only "add" noise to mask the real noise? I always hoped there'd be some secret technology that would actually subtract sound or make it disappear entirely..
@@slaveNo-4028 They do add noise to mask the real noise. The idea is that the constant sound is better than intermittent sound, or simply just more relaxing than an annoying external noise.
Sleep deprivation due to my neighbor/landlord letting his dog bark for 20-30 min in the middle of the night and early morning brought me here. Thank you for your review, pretty sure it’s going to save my life
Oh, that must be difficult. You might find white noise isn't the right thing if the dogs are extremely loud. Have you tried earplugs, or white noise with headphones in?
Oh, jeez. I feel your pain. I live in an apartment and I have to deal with dogs barking across the hall and also downstairs. I love dogs. But, I can't stand owners who don't train their pets.
These people shouldn't be allowed to have animals. I've had the same issue with my neighbors before. Only absolutely terrible people allow that kind of thing to happen, plain and simple.
I really really like these washing machine sounds on RUclips. Seriously one of the most relaxing background sounds to me. As weird as this is, the sound of someone distantly vacuuming will put me in the best sleepy mode.
Dude thanks for this !!! My buddy used to have a super old antique “ Air machine “ that was literally just a metal cylinder with 1 button / 1 fan sound / 1 volume haha…. The most basic thing ever was an absolute treasure, looks like these came a long way
Something to keep in mind, the mind can identify patterns extremely well(survival) even in our sleep. The key advantage to the marpac is the non repeating full bodied white noise. Without a better speaker you can't get the low end waves that the marpac can achieve. The white noise is much richer than the others.
Hi K, I agree that the white noise machines with a real fan inside them do have something none of the others have. If it had a few more options, such as volume adjustment and timers, I'd be much more positive about it. That's why I liked the Snooz so much, which I reviewed after I did this video. It's just a shame it's so expensive because otherwise the balance of real fan and extra features is great.
@@kato1kalin I think it probably is the Marpac. The company merged with Yogasleep, so now they removed the word Marpac and just call it Dohm. The two speed version is similar to the model in my review, just with two speeds as the name suggests! I had one before, and found it gives more flexibility to adjust the sound and volume. I'd still like to see more options in future models, particularly more fan speed options as the Snooz has. That one has 10 volume settings, which is essentially just 10 fan speed settings. I'm sure they could do the same with the Dohm.
@@kato1kalinYou have a good point there, brain easily recognises patterns and in some low quality electronic noise machines you can hear click where the loops attach to each other. There are some great loopless noise Android apps where you can't detect repeating loops because it continously generates noise, no loops. "Noise Wall" by Mynio Tech being one of them. Highly recommended.
Thanks you for this review. 2 months I got the Evo based off this review and it's worked out better than I expected. If you ever make another in depth review for something like sleep masks, I would be one happy person;) Seriously though, this video helped a lot.
That's great to hear! I'm always happy to know a video was useful, and the viewer actually liked the product they got from my recommendation:-) I've been thinking about doing a sleep mask comparison for ages actually. Not sure I'll get around to it this year, but it's on the to-do list!
This video is a few years old, but I just heard about white noise machines.I have a neighbour who snores so loud I can hear it through the wall and it's driving me insane! I have to sleep with ear plugs every night, but now my ears won't breathe during the night and they get itchy. This is very helpful so I can hear what sounds these machines include.
It is indeed a bit old now, but most of the devices are still available. I would also still rate the LectroFan Evo very highly if I did the video again today! Good luck combatting the snoring. Some deep pink or brown noise should hopefully help.
This is great information... I’m such a light sleeper .. I’ve come to the conclusion I need a fan or white noise. Started my search for a fan that doubles as white noise but most are sold as “quiet”. Now need to decide on one from your video! I will use your link. 🙂🙂
Thanks Melanie, both for the compliment and decision to use my link - both are very much appreciated! Yes, it's strange that just when you want a noisy fan, many are made to be quiet these days! A larger and cheaper, not very well made one is more likely to be noisy, but also more likely to break in less time. Or maybe not - I had an old fan that lasted for years! Hopefully a white noise machine will work well for you though:-)
I was thinking the Sound+Sleep would be an excellent choice since it gets louder due to external noise, but what if my alarm clock goes off and I sleep through? Oops.
It doesn't increase the volume so much that you wouldn't hear an alarm set loudly. If the alarm is quiet and the machine volume is already high, then maybe it could be an issue...
DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW ANYBODY WOULD DISLIKE AN HONEST VIDEO LIKE THIS 🤔🤦. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT WOULD MAKE A PERSON PRESSED DISLIKE BUTTON SUCH A THING.
Thanks for the support! As long as it's not an avalanche of dislikes, it's kind of useful for me to see which videos people like or don't like, so I can continually improve. I'm still such an amateur at making videos! That's assuming everyone judges the video based on the way I did it, not on whether they like the product(s) or not! Otherwise I'd be in trouble... But really, considering I make videos criticizing products that could affect someone's business, I should be willing to accept criticism in return. Thanks all the same though. On a personal level as someone sat at home with a coffee reading comments and hoping they aren't soul-destroying, ones like yours put a smile on my face:-)
So very glad I found this channel. I have always struggled with noise hypersensitivity & when I try to explain people do not understand. I have now been diagnosed autistic. I literally hear noises other people don’t notice & to make things worse my husband recently decided to start snoring ridiculously loud every night. Ear plugs have never worked for me but I only recently today became aware conductive hearing. The irony of it is, as a child I couldn’t hear properly!
Hi, I'm happy to hear you like the channel. Snoring is a tricky one to deal with - earplugs are usually the best bet for me, but then I've been able to test close to 50 different types spanning many years, so I have found the perfect ones for me. I haven't done a video on snoring, but I do have a written article on my website with some tips that you might find helpful: www.nosleeplessnights.com/sleep-with-a-snorer/
@@nosleeplessnights1 I’m autistic & hypersensitive to sounds & I just realised that all my issues are to do with conductive hearing. Thank you. I am now testing out different background sounds. Ear plugs are no defence against conductive sounds!
Great review! Thank you so much for going over a lot of the sounds on each machine. Very helpful. It really shows the range of sounds available, and which I wouldn’t bother with (some of those “nature” sounds on RUclips white noise videos really sound like a toilet that is continually running or sizzling bacon.) Very, very helpful in my decision on which white noise machine to get. That sound + sleep sounds interesting, with so many choices, and I love that it has the option to adjust ambient sound. I actually have a Marpac, which I find loud enough for me. Too loud, actually. I just don’t like that it only has the one sound option, and only 2 volume options. Anyway thanks again for the great thorough review. Hope you got all of those machines donated to you!
Hi there. Thanks for the positive feedback - I really appreciate, and I'm happy to hear the video was useful. I agree about a lot of sounds that are recorded not being particularly good. The other day I was in the woods where there was some beautiful birdsong that I loved. I had the thought that it would be interesting for people who really love nature sounds to get a reasonable microphone and record a place where they actually went in person and felt especially happy and relaxed. Then they could play their own audio at night that would help transport them back to that place while lying in bed relaxing. Anyway, as for the white noise machines, I agree it's a shame the Marpac (now YogaSleep) devices had no volume control. There is a more modern device with an internal fan that does have volume controls - the Snooz. You can find a video of it here on my channel. The only problem is that it's twice as expensive!
@@nosleeplessnights1 that’s a great idea about recording ones own nature sounds. I might try that. I have small birds and live in a big city, downtown. One of my birds lived in a home a couple of blocks from the beach before she came to me, so I play ocean sounds for her near her cage to try to help her sleep to mask city sounds. The ones I’ve found on RUclips often have bird noises, which trigger birds (and ads.) So that’s a great idea to go out to the beach at night and record my own!
Thanks for the great review with links to purchase and even time stamp for each. Only wish the music volume in between each was much, much lower in volume... :-)
We used to love the Dohm, but they are now owned by a company named Yogasleep and they started using cheaper internals. Our last model was about 10 years old before it started making a clicking noise. The new one never really worked right on the low setting and high had a very subtle rattle. After about a year, it started screaming, suggesting a bearing went out. We're going with a SNOOZ instead since it uses the same concept and looks like it uses higher quality components.
Hi. I can't comment on that as I haven't taken then apart to check, and there is nothing on their website (obviously) about using cheaper components. However, I recently played an original Marpac and a new Yogasleep model, and they sound the same to me. Having said that, I do agree that the Snooz is very good. It's considerably more expensive, and annoying that some features are only accessible via the app, but it is better in general I think. I have a video of the Snooz here in case you didn't see it: ruclips.net/video/YAwev6ZN_G4/видео.html
Very helpful video, thank you! We are planning a family trip this summer and I’m trying to find a way to negate snoring, since we’ll all be sharing a room.
You're welcome, I'm happy to hear it was helpful. To be honest, if you're sleeping next to a person snoring, a white noise machine is unlikely to help much. Perhaps if you sleep in separate beds with a bit of space between them, and put the machine in between you at head height, it might help a little. But if it's loud snoring, you'll still hear it and then just end up with two loud noises in the room instead of one. You might be better off getting some decent earplugs and/or using noise-cancelling headphones. Ideally, the person snoring would take some steps to reduce it for everyone else's sake if it's possible.
Guys, this stuff simply WORKS. End of discussion. My problem is getting addicted to it. I now feel like I need to take that with me when I travel and pretty much have it on all the time. Another issue that I have is that I sleep way to hard. It feels like if there is a burglary happening, I won't hear anything because I am sleeping like a baby.
Hi Raul, I can relate to the first point. If I don't use earplugs or listen to something to block sound, I just can't sleep unless I'm utterly exhausted!
Thanks for your review, it is very helpful! I find your video production professional, nice calm voice and good information. Also like the tune in between the products as well. Keep it up the good work! By the way: I will make sure to use one of your Amazon links when I decide to purchase one (leaning towards #1 for now).
Hi Benny! Thank so much for the positive feedback and kind words - I really appreciate it! Thanks also for thinking of using my links. Please note that some of my links now go to the soundofsleep website, which is the manufacturer of the Lectrofan and Sound+Sleep range. I have a promo deal with them, so you can get them for a better price.
@@nosleeplessnights1 Thanks for your help Ethan! I live in the Netherlands, so I will have to order it from the UK probably. No problem, I will certainly use your link when I do decide to order it.
@@nosleeplessnights1 I think you might be right. I actually prefer the LectroFan Classic. It's a bit cheaper and the speaker points straight up. Also from some other reviews they say the Classic sound quality is slightly better. Quick question: Do you happen to have an Amazon link (UK) for the Classic or can I just use the one for Evo? I'd be happy to use that link. Thanks!
Excellent video! 😃👍 I have to add that I also have several white noise and nature sound apps downloaded on my phone but unless you're listening with headphones, they're not loud enough to drown out external noise. I have to have white noise playing the entire night because my neighbours are so loud! We also had to endure night road works! I have personally owned at least 10 if not more various types of white noise machines. Some are better than others. You need constant noise to drown out outside noise, some nature sounds are only good if you're in a quiet environment. I personally like rain sounds but I have been known to use multiple white noise machines for different neighbours on either side of the wall! 😩 The cheaper ones with external batteries aren't loud enough.
Thanks, glad you liked it. I agree with every point you make there. Apps are great, but you need headphones or a speaker. And constant noise is better than nature sounds for sure, with the exception of waterfalls and rain which can also be pretty good.
@@nosleeplessnights1 I agree. I just bought another white noise machine that arrived yesterday and one more on its way! 😁 I really like rain sounds. I mainly bought a white noise machine to drown out outside noise. I can't live without it anymore! I wish I bought one decades earlier. Without it, my neighbours would probably get murdered. I'm really annoyed by other people's noise. I use a combination of white noise machine and fan sounds on my phone to drown out neighbours on various sides of the wall. 😞 Living in an apartment is the worst!
Even when I am awake I like to have some background noise...when winter comes and the air conditioner gets turned off that silence is strange...I have needed to get one of these for years
I was literally thinking the same thing this week, as the air con finally going off has meant our dog is waking up at 6am when the garbage trucks come by! And he in turn wakes me up. Time to test white noise on the dog I think...
Great reviews. I can't help but notice the Big Red Rooster is entirely white. You would think they would have made it red for marketing purposes - or at least have a logo of a red rooster! ;-) Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews - very helpful.
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I agree, and have joked about that a couple of times. Maybe adding the logo to the device would have pushed the price up. Who knows!
Trying to decide if I should buy one for college. I never had one but so many people swear by it and I feel like with one or two roommate and lots of studying it could be very useful. Thanks for all these reviews
You're welcome Louisa! As long as they don't share a room with you, a device like this could help mask noise they make. You could always test how much you find it helps you concentrate first with a phone app or some white noise on RUclips. I have three white noise videos on my channel you could listen to for a while before deciding whether to get a dedicated machine or not.
@@nosleeplessnights1 My first year I'll be sharing the same dorm room with one or two girls. So, maybe it won't even help my first year. I'll check out those white noise videos. Thank you so much! This is very good help :)
In that case, I would only get one with a headphone jack so you can listen privately. Playing white noise in a shared room is probably not going to go down very well unless they happen to love white noise too, and at the same time you do. And if you are going to use headphones, I would just save money and use an app on your phone or play white noise on your computer. If you're listening to it during the daytime, I personally don't see a reason in your case to buy a new piece of tech when you probably already have a device more than capable of playing white noise:-)
I came here looking for info since i struggle to sleep.. but this video actually relaxed me, hell no im not buying anything i found what i was looking for 👏👏👏
Your not the first person to make me think I should do an 8 hour video in which I just talk in a really monotonous way about white noise machines! It wouldn't do much good for my income, but if I can bore the world to sleep, I guess it would be good for the soul at least...
Just ordered the lecto fan machine thank you so much for this review. extremely helpful. there are so many reviews out there, that without your calm review I would have remained confused and i desperately need to sleep !
Thank you so much! I bought my HoMedics WNM, 2 years ago and works... AMAZING! I was looking for some videos (I want my friends with resting problems can enjoy a relaxing rest as I do) and BOOM! I found this treasure... THANK YOU! Here in Mexico, don't exist mental health culture... That's why I only now about ONE brand, until today. I love you reviews, comments and tips. Take care and see you soon!
@Allison Sulouff The loudest one is Lectrofan classic. I have tried at least 10 different ones. I live in a very loud apartment with annoying neighbours, leaf blowers, etc... I went through a tonne of white noise machines. I have to replace the cord to my Lectrofan but that one still works and been using it every single night until the cord got frayed. Now I'm looking for another one because my neighbours are driving me nuts!! The cheaper ones aren't usually as loud. At least not for my living situation.
I'm autistic and I can't live without these. I have one, about the size of an NHL hockey puck White Noise Sound Machine Model: DWN-0018. It uses the oblong Samsung charger. I love it.
@@nosleeplessnights1 yes a very decent variety. You have your 'ocean' and 'fan' sounds, couple of melodies, and some nature sounds. All in all very good for such a small guy.
Thanks for this video! I had no idea there was a mini sound machine! I use a sound machine every night an I'm getting ready to travel so deff buying a letrofan micro 2 it will be great not having to pack up my big sound machine!
You're very welcome Erin. I'm glad the video provided some new options for you, and I hope that one works out well if you do decide to get it. It's definitely considerably smaller than most standard white noise machines.
Thanks for the review! I was leaning towards the 3rd one, but after I saw the apps i think I’ll do that. I’m currently streaming 10 hour RUclips ambient videos with black screen but it uses up a lot of data!
Hi, are any of these of any use for the living room? Impact noise from the flat above is awful. Would be nice to relax and chat with wife or watch tv without booming steps distraction
Great set of reviews and so helpful for me as I suffer awful tinnitus and white noise is essential for a good night's sleep, which I've not had lately due to my last machine breaking. Good work.
Thanks! I'm glad you like my reviews:-) I also have mild tinnitus, so I can understand where you're coming from. I hope you like whichever white noise machine you choose.
Thanks, that's very kind! Although, RUclips removed all the dislike counts for all videos recently, so it did have a few dislikes. Fortunately for me, not many though. Still, I appreciate the sentiment!
Excellent! Going to order the first device you demonstrated. I'd been using my smart phone but decided to purchase a dedicated device in case I'm watching RUclips at the time etc. Thanks amen!
I love the review very helpful. I believe this will help by cancelling noise coming from me that scare my neighbors every night.. I scream out in my sleep sometimes I even sleep talk they think I'm posses but I don't have the money to buy the machine because I live in Africa specifically Nigeria. Subscribed already
Hi ble ble Glad the review was helpful. To be honest, I don't think it would help much in your situation anyway. To drown out the noise you make, you would need to have it so loud, and right next to an adjoining wall, that the extra sound would probably annoy them just as much. And it is unlikely to block out the sound of screaming. I think you would have a better long-term outcome if you tried some self-help techniques for sleep talking and nightmares, if that's what is happening. If you can see a doctor, that might help to get a diagnosis. But if not, there are lots of good websites with techniques for relaxation before going to bed and other steps you can take which might help reduce how disrupted your sleep is. In some cases, just spending some time before going to sleep trying to put your mind at ease and in a relaxed state can help. So if it were me, rather than spending money on a machine which probably won't help, I'd look at free ways to tackle the root of the problem. And in this case, information is key:-) All the best!
Thank you for your review this is so helpful. I'm thinking about getting the Sound+Sleep, but I'm curious which one do you think is the best for external noises (loudest)?
You're welcome Denicia - good to know it was helpful. The Sound+Sleep is a great choice and pretty loud comparatively. But the LectroFan Evo is louder I think, though in a bedroom they would both do a good job of blocking out noise at louder volume levels.
It was kind of you to reply and I based my purchase on the advice you provided! I'll subscribe to your channel too, thanks and take care!@@nosleeplessnights1
You're welcome. I play all the sounds in the individual reviews, which you can see on my channel if you browse for them. If I played all the sounds for all the machines in the comparison, it would turn it into a 30-40 minute video, which is a bit too long I think.
No problem. I hope you find what you're looking for. Keep in mind the Avantek is no longer sold, and the Dreamegg has an upgrade. Have a look at my video on the Dreamegg D3 Pro instead if you liked either of those two in this video as it does the same and is better: ruclips.net/video/8BmWYlcKoVQ/видео.html
According to their website, the white noise of the Yogasleep/Marpac models is actually pink noise: While we call it “white noise” because that’s the most commonly used industry term, our Dohm products are actually creating pink noise. If you sample white noise, brown noise, and pink noise, you will quickly hear that actual "white noise” is annoying to your ear and not conducive to sleep!
Hi Orlando. It's hard to pinpoint which machines have which noise color sometimes, because they seem to use different descriptions. But I can see what they mean, as I personally tend to listen to deeper sounding noise rather than the more intense options when a machine has a variety.
I bought the Sound Oasis reluctantly while on a trip at a mall bc l was desperate for sleep and it ended up being a nice little sidekick that l will be bringing on every single vacation!
I just came back to say I needed a new sound machine (old one was intermittently shutting off after 10 years) so I purchased the Lectrofan based on this video and it’s AMAZING and I thank you for this video.
I was young in the 50`s. Slept in the basement. Just outside the door the water heater was old and boiled loudly. Believe it or not I grew use to it. Ha Ha/
I've had good experience with binaural frequencies (423 hz especially), for sleep and relaxation purposes. Do any of these machine include some similar frequency in their white noises? P.S.: Least to say, good review. Really helps me in deciding which features are best for me :D
Great video! Thanks a lot. Does the LectroFan Micro 2 have the same cool "Whooop" transition sound as the other full size LectroFan models? Also do you have a referral link to purchase? Be happy to give you credit.
Hi! Thanks for the compliment:-) I don't believe it has a whoop noise transition - at least mine doesn't seem to. You can find links to buy them if you click 'more' below the video. Thanks for thinking of me that way - it's much appreciated.
I've been searching for a video that had a bunch of different sound machines, and this is perfect. I'm still struggling between two sound machines, but my main focus is a fan noise... right now I sleep with a fan on but with the colder weather coming along, I've been researching sound machines. If you don't mind, I have two questions regarding two of the machines, I'd appreciate your feedback as it seems you have tested each of them out extensively. 1. Lectrofan Evo. I've read in multiple reviews and feedback the machine tends to stop working, or have problems after a few months. Are you familiar with this issue, or is this possibly a "one off" type of thing where sometimes systems just don't work. (I call it the Friday box, where you just got a lemon) 2. Dreamegg D3 Pro. I've read that the fan option noises aren't that great, but it seems to have excellent reviews. Do you think the fan option on this one is relatively close to a regular fan or is it not even worth looking at for a fan option?
Hi Melissa, I'm happy to hear the video was useful. I'll see if I can answer your questions. 1. I've had one for two years and it's still fine. But I can believe that some people have had one that stopped working. I've read hundreds of customer reviews on Amazon for most white noise machines sold there in the last eight years, and can't recall any cases where at least one person doesn't say their one stopped working. Same for a lot of tech. I bought a VR headset this year to connect with my family back home while in a pandemic lockdown, for example, and it stopped working after two months. I got a replacement, and now I'm happy again. This just happens. But I don't think the EVO is particularly bad in this respect, so I wouldn't be put off my some people's unlucky experience. 2. The fan sounds are ok, but they are more industrial than household fan style sounds on the whole. Did you see my specific review of that device? You can listen to the fan sounds briefly here, around the four and a half minutes mark - ruclips.net/video/SQ-AOzuBKEU/видео.html So if you want a fan that sounds like a real fan, I'd use the EVO rather than the Dreamegg. Or, an alternative I reviewed after I made this comparison video is the SNOOZ. It has a real fan in the case, so it's as real a fan sound as you can get. The only thing is it's expensive. You can see the review here: ruclips.net/video/YAwev6ZN_G4/видео.html I hope that helps:-)
Very good video, I hope you can make a new one updated for 2025. Do you know any device that uses the microphone not just to adjust volume but more smartly to detect noise and produce the ideal counter when needed? AI progress could enable that...
Thanks, I really appreciate the positive feedback! I don't know of any white noise machine that does that. What you describe is essentially active noise cancellation, which is more in the realm of noise cancelling headphones. There are many excellent headphones that do that, but comfort in bed and battery life tends to be an issue. As for the updated version, it's been on my mind for a very long time to do and hopefully I will in the next year. It takes me a very, very long time to do these kind of multi product comparisons, so they keep getting pushed down my to-do list! In the meantime, I did update the written comparison on my website not long ago. It contains a roundup of all the white noise machines I've used in the last couple of years, so you might find that helpful. I wanted to convert it to video, but I haven't had time. Here it is: www.nosleeplessnights.com/best-white-noise-machine-reviews/
This is exactly the video I needed, now that the neighbors are giving me a hard time in the early morning hours. I noticed that the white noise app I'm using on my phone doesn't mask the banging and stamping sounds that come through the thin walls. Do you think an actual machine could do the job, or should i look for a different alternative? P.S. i use ear plugs, too.
Good to know the video was useful! Honestly, impact noise like that is very hard to block out with white noise. And if it's really loud, you might find you need to play it very loudly to block out the noise, which in itself would be less pleasant to listen to probably. I would start by investigating whether you're using the best earplugs for you and getting a good fit. What type do you use exactly? What size, material and noise reduction rating do they have?
@@sabinesaidy Looking on their website, it seems they list the noise reduction rating for two versions, but not the foam - saying only PPE earplugs have a rating. That doesn't seem to be the case in the US though, as many sleep earplugs have a NRR listed. This is the first time I've heard this, and I don't know which countries that rule applies to. So I would suggest trying at least one or two other foam earplugs, if that's the type you like. For smaller sizes, I recommend Mack's. You could try Mack's Ultra Soft, which I really like myself. They also have a slim fit and dreamgirl, which are also smaller. And if you want to explore other brands, I also like Howard Leight, Moldex, Ear Buddy, and Hearoes. Be careful with the size though as many of the ones they make are larger and meant for industrial use. That's one reason I often recommend the softer and small Mack's for sleep. I don't know where you're based, but at least one of those should be available in many countries. I'll be publishing a video in the next month or two about earplugs, so you could also look out for that as I'll talk about all of those brands (assuming I didn't mess up my footage and can't edit it!).
@@nosleeplessnights1 thanks a lot dear sir. I just found Mack's in Amazon NL and my sister will ship them to me soon (I live in Lebanon). Hope this will solve the problem, even for a bit. Your recommendations are highly appreciated and helpful. Looking fwd to your next videos. Best x
Some people say white noise helps. I'd test it out with a phone app or youtube on any speaker first. If that works for you, then these devices probably will too. The exception might be the ones with internal fans if you discover it's standard white noise you need rather than a gentle fan.
So I think it's clear that these are not actually noise canceling, they're noise suppression. They can make noise in an attempt to mask the other noise by being louder than the other noises. That is the opposite of noise cancellation. That is noise addition.
That's one with of looking at it, yes. No manufacturer claims they have noise cancelling tech in them though. It's more of a casual language people use to describe the way they work. They don't even have to be louder per se - it's more about masking noise with a noise that's more consistent and that you enjoy the sound of, and ultimately control.
Earplug is the best to listen to our own inner white sound (deep spacious low freq sound). perfectly enough. i cut them shorter for comfortable side position sleeping.
Unfortunately none of them will be able to block that kind of noise completely, and you would probably need the volume so loud to have any chance of masking the barking that it would be unpleasant to listen to! You could perhaps try one with a headphone jack, such as the Evo. But I would only even think about trying that if your normal headphones and music help block out the dogs. My advice would be to do some research into how to block sound through the window, such as installing a double glazing screen window and using acoustic caulk to block even the smallest of gaps in the window frame.
@@nosleeplessnights1 Thanks for the tips! I found a site that makes "indow window inserts" that fit over your existing window and blocks out noise, so I'm looking into this. I just wish there were a less expensive route.
Hi, I live in a condo and need a machine that will help my neighbors sleep. We have an infant in the bedroom who is up at night crying so I need something that will help the neighbors in the next apartment and the one downstairs not hear the cries. What do you suggest?
Hi Pat, that's very considerate of you as a neighbor. Have they actually mentioned anything, or are you anticipating them having trouble sleeping? Some people are better at sleeping through noise than others, and it may not even be a problem. If you have spoken to them, and already offered to get them a machine, then I think any of the first few would be fine. It depends on what they enjoy listening to at night, so it's hard to say what would work best for them. Perhaps ask them if they know if they like listening to white noise, fan sounds or nature sounds and then choose one from there.
Can you please be my neighbour? I can't believe there are still people as considerate as you are! My life has turned into hell since my neighbours escaped from the zoo and moved upstairs. If you were my neighbour, I would be perfectly fine because I would know you are actually concerned I might be disturbed and sometimes that's what exactly a disturbed neighbour wants. God bless!
Great review! Quick question, can you recommend a device for brown noise that can dampen my neighbour's bass? They're up all night an always listening to music or the tv and their sound system, even on the lowest setting, puts out enough bass to come into our apartment, cutting right through earplugs and fans. I think we need something large enough to have a speaker that can put out bassy brown noise without being turned all the way up as the intruding sounds aren't very loud, yet very persistent.
Sorry for the late reply, I've been away. Your best bet would be the LectroFan Evo or LectroFan Classic. Alternatively a good Bluetooth speaker / normal speakers and a free app would do the trick maybe. Bluetooth headphones with the brown noise right in your ears would also mask it very well.
I was hoping you would show both lectrofan evo and classic pros and cons as they consistently top the charts wherever I look so i think I'll be buying that one today, the sound quality seems really good and good brown noise which is what I'm after, last thing I can try to drown neighbour tv noises or I will go berserk...
That's a good idea for another video! Here is a quick summary for you though: Both have 10 white noise and 10 fan sounds, which sound similar really. Evo has 2 extra sounds, both ocean surf that sound more like variable white noise than a recording of the ocean to me. Evo has a headphone jack and better timer options. Both are similar in volume. Classic is a bit cheaper.
Let me know if you like it when you've had a chance to try it. I'd love to know your thoughts on the trade-off between the natural sound and the lower volume than some other devices.
That's a shame. Yes, it is quite high-pitched. Both the Evo and the Classic are very good. Have you seen my video comparing the two of them? You can listen to all their sounds in that video: ruclips.net/video/byejKgbnPSI/видео.html
I live in a student accommodation and drunk guys play very loud music upstairs and knock on doors at midnight. Which device do you think would be the best for me? (I probably need the one that makes things quietest cause I'm a hard sleeper)
That's a tricky one. I'd suggest one with a headphone jack to create a better barrier as all that impact noise is hard to block out with white noise in the room. Maybe try the Evo as that has a headphone jack. You could also just download a free app on your phone and try it with headphones first before investing in a white noise machine.
You're awesome. I went with the app connected to a blue tooth speaker I wasn't putting to good use. The office provides us with the Marpac brand. Thank you for saving me some money. When I can afford one, I want the one that cost one hundred bucks. New subscriber.
Hi Sophia, thanks for your positive comment - you made me smile reading it! I'm glad the video was helpful and helped you save some money. As much as white noise machines can be great, so can finding an alternative that means you can spend your money elsewhere:-)
I got the dreamegg one a few months ago, and loved it. And then it stopped working on about the 3rd day of use. So disappointed. It's really a drag that we have so few reliable products.
That is disappointing. Did you get a replacement? The Dreamegg team are usually quite responsive in my experience. And 3 days should warrant a replacement or money back.
Hello Ethan, thank you so much for your great review. I am wondering, which sound is the best to reduce television sounds from my neighbours apartment..
You're welcome Michelle! It's hard to say really - normally I'd recommend experimenting with different sounds, placement and volume as it can vary by situation as to what works best. I'd imagine just standard white noise, rain or waterfall would block it better than birdsong, for example.
May be moving to a condo. An audible light rail electric transit train runs by. Thought in case it's irritating I'd consider a white noise machine. Then I remembered my laptop IS a w.n.m.! I have tinnitus&used to play electronic w.n. + waterfalls tracks together as my fave sounds to effectively mask ringing of ears. I got so used to the ringing, I ceased needing w.n. But might need it again for the train. W/long extension cord for my good desktop speakers, I can easily put my w.n. where ever I want it. Laptops as an alternative to machines.
Yes, that's a fair point. Any device that actually plays white noise will do the trick if you can set it up in a way that doesn't disturb your sleep. It's one of the reasons I published a few white noise videos on my channel, so people can just play them directly from RUclips if they want to!
Hi Which device would be best for loud hammer sounds and metal clanging. I’m on the fifth floor but i still hear it really loud It starts at 7am, would the sound + sleep one be a good option it’s selective option is it loud enough? Thank you
Hi It depends on how you are hearing the sounds. If they are coming from outside the window, then any device might help if it has reasonable volume. If it's coming from inside your building, then it might not help as much as you'd hope for.
Hello Ethan, thank you for this video. Is there any machine you would recommend for masking dog barks? My neighbour's have them on the balcony and they wake me up every night. Thank you in advance :)
You're welcome. Unfortunately, I don't know of one that has a specific noise that works well with dogs. They are just so loud, it's hard to block them out! I imagine earplugs would be the best bet really.
Thank you for this review! Is there a certain machine you would recommend for thunder noise specifically? Also do you happen to know the name of the app you used?
You're welcome Jenna. Honestly, I don't think any of them stand out particularly with their thunder recordings. The speakers tend to struggle a little with the deep rumbling noise, and the recordings are often quite short and repetitive just by the nature of how many thunder claps makes sense to put into a 1-4 minute loop I think. It's easier to create a more random sounding loop if its a constant noise like rain or waterfalls. So honestly, I wouldn't feel right in recommending any of them if thunder is the one you like best, as I don't want you to spend your money on my recommendation and then be disappointed when you realise it only has two or three variations of the thunder claps! I'd suggest trying a couple of free apps instead to see if you can find one with less repetition. And about the app - it's simply called white noise generator. You'll know it by the colorful icon with the angled grid pattern.
That's a totally valid question, and one that many people ask. The number one reason is simply to not have to use your phone, especially if you have battery issues or you want the white noise in a kid's room and the signal won't reach the speaker. Maybe also ease of use in simply hitting a button and it turns on. But sure, if you already have a good speaker and can get an app you like, don't bother with a machine and save yourself some money:-)
Personally, I like the Evo because of the headphone jack and the more modern design, but both are excellent in terms of the white noise and fan sounds.
I don't think any of them are specifically better for that particular noise. But at a guess, I'd say one with deeper pink and brown noise if the lift sounds have a deep rumble to them.
If you play white noise loudly in the room you are in, then it's possible it will block out the pump noise. You'd need to experiment with the volume, positioning, and track choice though and there's no guarantee it will block it all out. You can use it during the daytime if you like - you just need to be able to tolerate white noise!
I don’t know what I would do without honest reviews like this. We need more people like you in the world. Thanks for making the world a better place!
Thank you for your very kind words Cenk. I really appreciate the positive feedback!
so do these devices only "add" noise to mask the real noise? I always hoped there'd be some secret technology that would actually subtract sound or make it disappear entirely..
@@slaveNo-4028 They do add noise to mask the real noise. The idea is that the constant sound is better than intermittent sound, or simply just more relaxing than an annoying external noise.
He's doing a public service.
Hi Bonnie, it's good to hear from someone who likes those sounds, as not everyone finds them so relaxing.
I started using one because of annoying noises outside.
But now I use it because it's too quiet at night without it!
Maybe you could wean yourself off with lower volume each night?
@@nosleeplessnights1 well I don't necessarily consider it to be a bad thing. I'm happy to continue using it 👍
Wow, same here, can't sleep when it's too quiet so I use my fan everyday
@@coolamericano I also use my fan but the winter is coming so its getting cold😢.
Dude thanks for this !!! My buddy used to have a super old antique “ Air machine “ that was literally just a metal cylinder with 1 button / 1 fan sound / 1 volume haha…. The most basic thing ever was an absolute treasure, looks like these came a long way
You're welcome Aaron. That antique machine sounds interesting...
I use a fan too lol it cancel sounds very well
Something to keep in mind, the mind can identify patterns extremely well(survival) even in our sleep.
@@nosleeplessnights1 I have a Dohm, it's just like the marpac but it's got two speed settings.
Thank you for this review. This was very well done. You’ve helped me decide which device is right for me.
You're very welcome! I'm glad it was helpful, and thanks for taking the time to say so, as it's always encouraging to hear:-)
Thanks you for this review. 2 months I got the Evo based off this review and it's worked out better than I expected.
If you ever make another in depth review for something like sleep masks, I would be one happy person;)
Seriously though, this video helped a lot.
That's great to hear! I'm always happy to know a video was useful, and the viewer actually liked the product they got from my recommendation:-) I've been thinking about doing a sleep mask comparison for ages actually. Not sure I'll get around to it this year, but it's on the to-do list!
Yeah, how loud is that puppy? I need it swamp cooler loud... ha.
Thank you! My roommates are up late and the LectroFanEvo seems to be the best choice for me. Excellent review!
Thanks Ben, I appreciate the positive feedback. I hope the Evo works out well for you.
Thank you! I’ve been looking for one. I appreciate your honest feedback!
You're welcome!
Great review, helped me decide what I wanted for my first sound machine !
Thanks, I'm really happy to hear the review was useful. Which one did you go for?
Thank you for this clear concise and detailed description. Your presentation is a pleasure to listen to. Love that British accent!
Thanks Anne! I always appreciate some positive feedback. And it's nice to know my accent is tolerable:-)
🙂Very helpful review on Sound+Sleep! I just purchased one second hand and didn't know how to use it's 'Adaptive' selection. Now I do. Thanks!
You're welcome, I'm really pleased the video was useful!
Good luck with the search! I'd love to know what you found most helpful when you've done some tests:-)
@@nosleeplessnights1 brown noise does seem to be quite calming...
Yes, I like brown noise too. Basically any deeper sounding noise that seems closer to a powerful waterfall than old TV static!
Let me know if you make the recording and if it works for you!
Thank you for your channel! Made a purchase based on a few of your reviews and I couldn't be happier. Sanity saver, you! Thank you!
You're welcome, and that's great to hear! What did you get, out of curiosity?
@@nosleeplessnights1 LetroFan. Simple, loud and gets the job done! Hopefully, the next upgrade will include an internal rechargeable battery.

Thanks for the great review with links to purchase and even time stamp for each. Only wish the music volume in between each was much, much lower in volume... :-)
You're welcome Jim, and thanks for the compliment. The constructive criticism is also very useful, so thanks for that too!
Who knows!

I am looking for a loud one that won’t burn out over time. Which is the loudest? Great video!
I love it.
I haven't tried that one - it does look very small! Are the sounds good?
@@nosleeplessnights1 yes a very decent variety. You have your 'ocean' and 'fan' sounds, couple of melodies, and some nature sounds. All in all very good for such a small guy.

Hi, are any of these of any use for the living room? Impact noise from the flat above is awful. Would be nice to relax and chat with wife or watch tv without booming steps distraction
In theory, yes. But to reduce the impact noise you hear, you would need to have it so loud that you probably wouldn't enjoy the TV or chat as much...
You know this man is a gem when his video has zero dislikes the world really does need people like you
Thanks, that's very kind! Although, RUclips removed all the dislike counts for all videos recently, so it did have a few dislikes. Fortunately for me, not many though. Still, I appreciate the sentiment!
Wow we have some serious drones here!
Can't wait to circuit benting one of these..
Send me a video if you do it...I'd love too see flying white noise machines!
Thank you so much. I chose the Lectro Fan Evo based on your review.
You're very welcome, and that's a good choice. I hope it works well for you!
my computer makes white noise
Excellent!
Going to order the first device you demonstrated. I'd been using my smart phone but decided to purchase a dedicated device in case I'm watching RUclips at the time etc.
Thanks amen!
You're welcome James. I'm glad the video was useful, and I hope the Evo works out well for you.
Hi ble ble
Glad the review was helpful.
And in this case, information is key:-)
All the best!
@@nosleeplessnights1 thanks so much for this...now I can drown out the noisey neighbors upstairs! 😩
Really top quality reviews. Exceptionally helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for your very kind words too!
Thank you for doing this review, very informative. Appreciate it.

It was kind of you to reply and I based my purchase on the advice you provided! I'll subscribe to your channel too, thanks and take care!@@nosleeplessnights1
@@antonygallion6778 no problem, and thank you:-)
What do you recommend I need one that have:timer ,white and natural noise , Bluetooth,
It's rare to have a white noise machine that has Bluetooth. What do you need that function for exactly?
Thanks for the great video. Please do consider playing all the sounds so it's easier to determine a suitable option before purchasing. :)
You're welcome. I play all the sounds in the individual reviews, which you can see on my channel if you browse for them. If I played all the sounds for all the machines in the comparison, it would turn it into a 30-40 minute video, which is a bit too long I think.
@@nosleeplessnights1 Thanks for clarifying. I didn't realise each product had a separate video, which solves the issue. 😊
Sounds like a lucky find then:-)
Thank you for the honest review. Im a light sleep with very loud neighbors who have parties. So I'm in the market for one of these
You're welcome. I hope you have some success with the noise masking!
I just came back to say I needed a new sound machine (old one was intermittently shutting off after 10 years) so I purchased the Lectrofan based on this video and it’s AMAZING and I thank you for this video.
That's great to hear! I'm very happy you're happy with the decision if it was my video that inspired you to buy it.
I was young in the 50`s. Slept in the basement. Just outside the door the water heater was old and boiled loudly. Believe it or not I grew use to it. Ha Ha/
Well, eventually we have to adapt to the noise in our environment if we can't change it, block it, or move house!
Ordered one. Hopefully it helps. I live I a loud building. Therapists and other doctors use these.
I hope so too! Let me know if it is helpful.
Thanks so much for this review! It has been really helpful. We are trying to find a louder noise machine for our newborn than the one we have.
You're welcome. Just keep in mind that some experts advise not to play white noise loudly to young kids.
@@nosleeplessnights1 oh I didn’t realize that. Thank you again!
I've had good experience with binaural frequencies (423 hz especially), for sleep and relaxation purposes. Do any of these machine include some similar frequency in their white noises?
P.S.: Least to say, good review. Really helps me in deciding which features are best for me :D
Hi Enzo, not that I know of. I think you'd need to use an app to get binaural beats.
Thank you for this thorough and candid review!
You're welcome - I'm glad you liked it!
Very good review and video. Straight to the point and good commentary.
Thanks Jack, I really appreciate the positive feedback!
(I call it the Friday box, where you just got a lemon)
You can listen to the fan sounds briefly here, around the four and a half minutes mark - ruclips.net/video/SQ-AOzuBKEU/видео.html
So if you want a fan that sounds like a real fan, I'd use the EVO rather than the Dreamegg. Or, an alternative I reviewed after I made this comparison video is the SNOOZ. It has a real fan in the case, so it's as real a fan sound as you can get. The only thing is it's expensive. You can see the review here: ruclips.net/video/YAwev6ZN_G4/видео.html
I hope that helps:-)
@@nosleeplessnights1 I use the Earfoams from "Sleeep", medium size. Do you have other recommendations? I will also investigate from my end.
Best x
You're welcome! I hope they help work a little better for you.
Very well done of all the machines you reviewed!!! Thank you!!!
You're welcome - I'm happy to hear you like the reviews
Thanks tons for this! Do you know if these are good for tinnitus?
Yes, earplugs can have that effect. Personally, I use them when I want silence as nothing works better.
Which one of these would be the best to block out 'big dogs' barking right outside my window?
@@yellowtevo That's great! Yes, I know. I might have to investigate DIY window inserts for a future video!
Thanks for the reviews! they are really helpful!
one question: can you plug the LectroFan to the wall with an adapter? or is it just for a computer?
Yes you can Abi. And I'm glad you liked the reviews:-)
@@nosleeplessnights1 Thank you.
God bless!
Awesome review. Very helpful :) Thanks so much
You're welcome Mandy, thanks for the positive words!
Thank you. I'm really pleased I found your review video. Helpful
You're welcome - glad you liked it Margaret!
@@nosleeplessnights1 Thanks!
I wish I encounter more reviews like this. Amazing review
Thank you!
Here is a quick summary for you though:
Both have 10 white noise and 10 fan sounds, which sound similar really.
Evo has 2 extra sounds, both ocean surf that sound more like variable white noise than a recording of the ocean to me.
Evo has a headphone jack and better timer options.
Both are similar in volume.
Classic is a bit cheaper.
@@nosleeplessnights1 Thanks I ordered the Classic and I’m also thinking of getting the Yogasleep Dohm.
You're fantastic at making these videos, thank you very much for making these comparisons.

@@nosleeplessnights1 Marpac classic..fingers crossed
Let me know if you like it when you've had a chance to try it. I'd love to know your thoughts on the trade-off between the natural sound and the lower volume than some other devices.
@@nosleeplessnights1 Marpac too high pitched. I've realized that I need a low pitch fan noise. Which Lectrofan would you recommend?
Exactly what I needed to choose my new gadget. Thanks!
You're welcome - I'm glad to hear the video was useful!
Great review! Thank you so much! 👍🏻
You're welcome, thanks for the compliment:-)

You're welcome Victoria, I'm glad to hear it was helpful:-)
Nice video really looking to buy one I'm a white noise person. Have you ever tried the brookstone soundmixer one I was curious about that.
I haven't tried it, no. I just took a look online and it seems interesting, so I'll add it to my to do list!
What are the best devices that you can’t hear the loops? Lease if you could tell me your opinion I would very much appreciate it 😊
The lectrofan evo or sound+sleep I think.
Thanks for this helpful review. What is the app you used at the end? You could layer multiple sounds on top of each other.
You're welcome. It's simply called 'white noise generator'. You can recognize it by its symbol with multicolored stripes and white bars in the middle.
Hi
Which device would be best for loud hammer sounds and metal clanging. I’m on the fifth floor but i still hear it really loud
It starts at 7am, would the sound + sleep one be a good option it’s selective option is it loud enough?
Thank you
Hi
It depends on how you are hearing the sounds. If they are coming from outside the window, then any device might help if it has reasonable volume. If it's coming from inside your building, then it might not help as much as you'd hope for.
Thank you! I needed this video.
You're very welcome - I'm happy to hear you liked it:-)
Hello Ethan, thank you for this video.
@@nosleeplessnights1 thank you! This was very helpful!
No problem:-)
Why would someone use one of those instead of an app like myNoise hooked up to a good bluetooth speaker? Thanks!
Do you prefer the ElectroFan EVO or the classic one ?
Personally, I like the Evo because of the headphone jack and the more modern design, but both are excellent in terms of the white noise and fan sounds.
@@nosleeplessnights1 Thanks for the reply! :)
Which one is most suitable to cutoff sounds coming from lifts next door?
I don't think any of them are specifically better for that particular noise. But at a guess, I'd say one with deeper pink and brown noise if the lift sounds have a deep rumble to them.
hey! can alexa play white noise at specific hours? or other device like alexa? i want it to play like at 4 am
Hi, yes you can if you add it as a routine in the app.
Hello. My neighbors backyard pool pump makes a loud/ annoying noise. Will this block out the noise OR is this mainly for sleeping? Thanks
If you play white noise loudly in the room you are in, then it's possible it will block out the pump noise. You'd need to experiment with the volume, positioning, and track choice though and there's no guarantee it will block it all out. You can use it during the daytime if you like - you just need to be able to tolerate white noise!
