See how she says, we can be here until “they” give us a place to be. And she’s fairly young. I wonder where she got the idea other people have to “give” her a place to live.
No, it isn’t wrong. According to the law, it is legal for them to be there. Just another case of the lower middle class and middle class getting stuck paying the lion’s share of ALL the bills, for the parks, police, fire fighters, schools, welfare, other people’s kids, Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, Section 8. On top of ALL their own bills the middle class pays, mortgage, food, kids, college, their own health premiums, car payments. The rich don’t feel it and the poor don’t pay it. There’s not enough rich people to really make a dent. The gov could take 90% of the riches’ wealth in Calif and there still wouldn’t be near enough money to pay for people who take drugs and live on the street and all the programs Calif gov has gone in debt for.

Humanity is facing these issues together not separate so are you so busy paying your rent that you have forgotten that you also are human? The homeless are growing like a disease and still greed can not spare a square. There is a vacant abandon hospital ( Old Sutter Hospital) on Chanate Road in Santa Rosa that can be rehabilitated and convert it as a shelter and house over 800 people! And the folks you saw camping the trail could go to any other public land in the city at this point, and the city does not now dare to remove them-- but some "non-profit agencies" would like very much to get the cost of some salaries out of the city / county for "serving the homeless" right where they now are-- if only they could prove they have a plan, and if only those groups could prove that they qualify as non-profit? They all seem dodgy AF to me, officials & 'advocates.' alike. I keep hoping I've misunderstood the situation.
@Patrick Conners, I understand and I appreciate your politeness. I agree with you on how sad it is when good honest people find themselves homeless but the truth of the matter is a good portion of homeless have some type of chemical dependency and choose to be homeless for the freedom it allows them to do as they please. Another good portion of homeless have some type of mental illness and most shelters are not equipped to handle them. I also agree it is sickening that the United States spends $50 billion on foreign aid every year. That could go a long way helping the people on the streets.
We are the only species that have to pay to live on this planet. Pray that you never end up in a situation that will cause you to walk in a homeless person footsteps. Maybe you'll ask for a little dignity and compassion.
If your so called "compassion" helps to perpetuate, and even add to the problem, then it's either the wrong kind of compassion or it's not compassion at all. If so, then the dignity you think you are giving is nothing more than an illusion, or worse a delusion.
@The Manager The fact that you cover up the shortcomings of the useless people you elected speaks volumes. And that is sad because it means one thing: the same people will be elected. Most would take a roof over their head than sleep in the street and it'd be a lot cheaper than building shelters or affordable housing in the city. These people need help and we need to find the most effective way to help them lest they will continue to stay where they are.
I saw an article from the LA Times on May 21st that said our Gov. while visiting Oakland, and Mayor Schaaf, touring the Oakland Henry Robinson Multiservice Center has announced a homelessness task force. He has tasked Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg as the leader, and as co leader LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas in forming this taskforce. From reading this article I understand that these gents are heading up a committee to report back to the Gov on how to spend future funds that he is planning on doubling to more than 1 billion dollars. As everyone can clearly see homelessness is an issue across this land but to just throw money at it is not going to fix the problem. I believe that our whole social services program in this state is a big contributing factor to what we see today. We are breeding the opportunity for people to not take responsibility for their own wellbeing and rewarding them by the fact that they don’t need to try to do anything to live. In this article Gov. Newsome spoke to Tekal Carlisle, who lived on the streets of Oakland for years. In this report they claimed she said it best that addressing homelessness is an enormous challenge because people living on the streets and sleeping in their cars come from all walks of life and are dealing with a wide spectrum of issues, including mental illness and drug addiction. “The only thing we do have in common is homelessness,” Carlisle said. As I read further into this article, our Governor is also asking for Dr. Tom Onsel to address mental health issues, whom Gov. Newsom referred to as the state’s “mental health czar.” In reading this article I can’t help but to wonder am I living in the Socialist state of California? The very definition of Socialism is a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. We are and have always been a capitalist society. It has been the hard work of men and women that immigrate to this land to build from nothing to something. Handing over more funds for exploratory purposes is not the answer. If you look at why people migrate to this country, why we work so hard at our daily lives it is because the conditions where we came from were so un-barrable we made ourselves change. To do what it took to not live in poverty. The people that should get our help are the Vets and the elderly. But the young and the able should work for it. The small percentage of people that can’t fend for themselves are not what burdens our current resources, where in fact most of our resources are being consumed by the able body folks who have become lazy by all the handouts and the drug addicts habits are being supported by different programs in communities like Oakland and San Francisco. Enough of our tax dollars are being spent on this! What we need is the implementation of a reward system. Just like when we were kids, if you did good your parents rewarded you. It is imperative that the first step be enforcement of the laws of the land and not to allow encampments that are destructive or obstructive. This is under California Penal Code 647(e) by allowing them to set up shop you are allowing them to vandalize and bring down the area to an unsanitary level. They need to just be moved on. They will get tired of this… The second thing would be to look at the social services issue that just fuels this behavior. Our social service moto of giving with no participant contributing back is the very root cause. We need to reform it all, so it is not of a socialism moto but directly teaches and rewards for proper outcome and reintegration into our capitalist society. We have a serious skilled labor issue in this country, and we have the bodies to change it. All you need is proper motivation. Abolish the generational welfare system and mandate drug testing to receive any monetary or housing services. When you talk about motivation and the shortage of skilled labor, it would be great if you set up a community where you train them for jobs like carpenters or plumbers or even commercial truck drivers. Most of the trucks going from coast to coast have sleepers and gives them an opportunity to put down roots where they can afford it. It would also help to set up a childcare center for the men and women who may needed while they are training for their new career. You must set time limits and boundaries. You must have them understand that this is going to be partially funded by the state and in return when they get back on their feet, they will need to pay back either financially or hours of community service and clean up. People feel emasculated by being unemployed and in a poverty-stricken situation. Instead of just throwing more money to it, let’s restructure this whole program so they contribute and feel better about themselves. You will easily be able to tell who wants to make a better life for themselves and who is happy living on the taxpayer’s dime. If they so choose a lifestyle of poverty it is up to you as the government to enforce the laws on hand to make vagrancy go away. No free handouts and yes, they need to work just like the rest of us.

I think we all know what politicians do with 'extra' extorted funds.
They pocket it along with their relatives and friends.
It gets stashed away in a hidden fund. Didn't you see the the 20 million that was hidden in a parks fund?

@@maureenhansen3308 and THAT is the reason the middle class is fleeing Cali as fast as humanly possible. Once they're gone, the state will collapse cause there'll be no one left to foot the bill for the bums.

There is a vacant abandon hospital ( Old Sutter Hospital) on Chanate Road in Santa Rosa that can be rehabilitated and convert it as a shelter and house over 800 people!
They will get tired of this…
The second thing would be to look at the social services issue that just fuels this behavior.
Aww, I feel so bad for Lisa and Craig.
This must be really tough for them.
Can’t imagine how they’re able to endure it.
Thoughts and prayers.
