Appreciate this video. I had booked an appointment to have a Smart Meter fitted, taking it at face value as a simple upgrade to the household. I've just cancelled that booking since myself and my elderly parents have been getting on just fine without one. I had no idea just how invasive and subject to outside influence these new meters could be. Cheers mate, you probably saved us a boat load of a headache.

Just two weeks ago I relented and allowed a smart water meter to be installed in my house after being without water for 3 weeks and 1 day. Harassment is an understatement. The last week, before I relented they posted a sign on my door saying my house was unfit for occupancy and threatening to remove me. When confronted, the water department in my village, denied putting the sign there. I so want to take action against these people but don't know where to start. During my time w/out water, I contacted several advocacy groups but none of them were interested in this issue.
Check this out. My power company wants to buy my house to get the property. I have been harassed for 16+ years now to this very day. 11/27/2023. The police don't help me. The police are in the back pockets of the power company. This video is so right on. The power company monitor my life and harass ,e accordingly. I'm looking for help too. Can't find a lawyer to help me. I hope someone reads this and knows of what I can do. The power companies are EVIL.

not sure if universal but my UK smart water meter operates differently to smart electric meter. some one still has to physically come out and stand over the meter to read it. it can't transmit to a cell tower as it has no power supply powerful enough. so far my bills before and afterwards have been comparable.

I've refused smart meters ever since they started pushing their shit. Even when they have been told numerous times they still keep calling. Then when patience has gone and for the hundredth time you actually lose it and tell them to f off, you get a letter saying that you have refused, more intimidation, making you think you have done something illegal. Thank you for this video.
Excellent! Thanks for confirming what I already supposed about smart meters plus telling me things I didn't know. I hadn't thought of the data mining they'll be doing. It's taken a while for EDF to get the message we don't want one but after many calls, emails and letters from them, I think they've finally got the message, even though I repeatedly told them not to call or contact us about them again. Sadly for the future, I'm sure the energy companies will find a way to force us to have them. The energy lobby was strong enough to get the Government to back them so they're not going to give up that easily. The only sure fire way to make sure they don't get their own way is to re-nationalise the energy companies. Energy and Water are things that should never have been privatised.
These Smart Meters are not what many people actually think they are. S.M.A.R.T. = Secret Military Armament (in/for) Residential Technologies. They remove the Dots as a Marketing Strategy so people think its a Word instead of an Acroym. Besides being unstable (and health destroying), they're key ignition points for covert military attack.
I needed my old electric meter replacing and was told I had to have smart meters, when the installer from british gas came to install them I told him all I wanted was an ordenary dumb meter, he said fine, made a phone call, got the job changed over the phone and fitted the dumb meter I wanted. So proves you don't have to have one and can even get it changed to a basic dumb meter on the instalation day.
If they ever become law, you are exempt from a smart meter if you have a pacemaker. I told them that I had medical issues and they can't ask me what those issues are, as that information is between myself and my doctor.
Thanks for this Joe, I guess that I'm late to the party on this one! The only thing I previously knew about Smart Meters was that when they first appeared my energy company was really keen on me having one and I knew that my energy company were owned and operated by some of the worst people on Earth I figured that anything they wanted must be bad so I have always refused one. The Smart Meter installation company eventually called me themselves and they used phrases like "everyone is getting them", "what do you mean you don't want one?! Why not?!" and "why do you have to make this so hard for us?" The tone of the call operators was most definitely of an aggressive and bullying nature. I am a firm minded individual and I am well versed in the psychological mind tricks that people will use to coerce you into things so I am pre-armed against these kinds of things luckily. Thank you for your service to people who aren't and thank you for filling in the gaps in my knowledge it was all very interesting.
Exactly! That’s why I won’t have one. I’m always switching and turning things off. I don’t need sa smart meter to tell me how much I’m saving. Want to save money. Turn it off!
They can alert you in real time to ground faults or power used that you are not aware of (such as someone stealing power, or if your freezer is left open
@@philt5782 Your right we don't need a meter to tell us, it's just common sense. Then you have to pay more electric for the visual displa to work, ok it doesn't cost much but it all adds up.
a guy knocked on my front door (despite the giant sign stuck on it saying No canvassers, sales people or religious groups) said hello and looked at me, then his clip board with an expression of great concern and said 'that's funny, I've noticed you're one of the only houses in this street without a smart meter'.... bloody cheek. I looked at him and said 'we're not gonna have much of a relationship if the first words that come out of your mouth are a lie are we'? I then told him to piss off.

Had an appointment booked for a smart meter installation on 14th Feb following emails and text messages from my supplier. I have now cancelled it having watched this video and been given other advice. Thanks.
The ONLY response to all this is to become increasingly militant and self determined. no more just sitting back and saying' oh it'll be alright' NO IT WONT. wise up, get educated, take charge of your life, stop just 'going with the flow'. there, thats told ya.
It all started a long time ago (before online banking) when the utilities stopped sending a prepaid return envelope for the payment of the bill, and asked you to "affix stamp here". Since then they have been passing all their business costs directly to you and this has lead to the push for a "cashless society" with the closures of bank branches and cash machines. Great video - thanks. I have been resisting the inducements as I suspected it was a scam.
Spot on Patrick, the problem is, is that the "masses", are functioning robots, completely oblivious to the agenda of the elite who are really controlling the status quo.Cheers bud.
@Patrick Kyle. To push back, people need to use cash and checks more often than debit and credit which they will not do and that’s y we will go cashless cause the majority ruled. Same with stores, all belly up y because people prefer Amazon the monster leader that shall eliminate stores, grandchildren will never know how stores got all decked out on holiday decor, how room full of toys were there to touch to.see, such amazement for kids. All there will be to do is stay at home have deliveries. Now, work at home started, this is saving corporate $$$$. But it also adds to pollution energy wise , electric cars all will follow suit and have charging stations in their homes more emf pollution, we r bombarded with waves of all various lengths, frequencies, it will doom zapping all. More cancers more youthful deaths, and who is to blame, SOCIETY, for not observing the future implications these things have and society had fallen into the hands of just exactly what and how the government wants them to do without a fight nor thought given. There’s your answer. People need to demand, stop wanting everything fast wait in line do not hassle of it. 5G faster but cell tower every so many feet y do we need it will do away with 3 g now and heard that’s the safest of all. The populace causes these problems cause they buy into anything big tech go my wants just like a robot would do.
My energy supplier made numerous attempts to install a smart meter in my house. Typically they would send me a message instructing me to pick an appointment time, with the application they directed me to having no option to refuse the installation. After several emails I eventually got them to accept I did not want a smart meter and they promised not to offer one again. That was a few years ago and so far they have kept their word. I think all Joe Gooch's points are valid but my main concern was a bit different, though it relates to his item on loss of control. There has been much talk about a likely future energy crisis due to over-reliance on renewable sources and other factors. Is it possible the government wants these smart meters in every home because it will facilitate precisely targeted power cuts? Or is that too cynical?
I am currently having the same problem with my energy supplier, Scottish Power. I received an email from them this week, saying that my meter has reached the end of its certified life and urgently needs replacing. I was asked to choose a date for the installation of a smart meter. I told them I do not want a smart meter.
@@juliewills3592 If they persist, tell them you don't want an old style meter for health reasons (because of the electromagnetic radiated signal). I've not needed to do this with my supplier but from what I have heard they have to comply with your wishes if it's a health issue. Looking at those comments I made three years ago, they look sadly prophetic. Half prophetic, anyway. The push is not for rotating power cuts but for price differentials by time of day (running your heating to cost you a fortune when it's cold)
@@juliewills3592 What makes them think the old meter "needs replacing"? If it's an analogue spinning wheel type, they have an enormously long service life; so ask them for proof of malfunction! You can insist they fit another (refurbed) analogue unit, if not tell them you will get an electrician to fit one. They are available on the web...
@@betacam235 They said it needs replacing because it is 15 years old. In fact, it is much older than that, as it was in place when I moved in 23 years ago. However, it is functioning perfectly. It is just an excuse to fit a smart meter.
@@juliewills8034 Worth pointing out that the turning-wheel analogue meters last up to 70 years in many cases, and if yours is so much younger you can't see any reason to waste time and money changing it for an alleged 'Smart' meter. As Nancy Reagan famously put it "Just say no!"
I must have had at least 10 letters through the post from my electricity supplier, trying to entice me into having a smart meter installed. NO, NO, NO, NO.
It's best to send the letters back as return to sender, or even put it an old envelope and but without a stamp. They have to pay the postage at their end.
Yeah, whenever the corportocracy tells me having or getting something will be really good I always head in the opposite direction- they mean really good for THEM. This is how I knew to avoid eg smart meters, monthly energy billing and direct debits, (I just get the bill, check the meter readings and pay it, no-one can TAKE anything from my bank account), paperless billing (how easy to miss a notification of a change), contactless bank cards (how dumb to have something that if you lose it someone can immediately use it at your expense as there's nothing they have to do now to prove they are you- eg a PIN or even just a signature!), all smart home appliances- yes including even a smart phone- a veritable mine of data about your habits & preferences and where you are- being reported to third parties all the time), gym contracts (there are gyms you can join where you only pay when you go there- like they all were in the old days), all non-statutory insurance. I could go on.... BY THE WAY GREAT VIDEO, THANK--YOU, VERY CLEAR. PLEASE EVERYONE WATCH THE MULTI-AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY ON SMART METERS- how they control you, invade your privacy and irradiate you- 'TAKE BACK YOUR POWER'- you can now watch it free on-line just search for and easily and quickly find and it.
Why would any business want you to use less of their product ? All ways point to ever increasing prices. But it must reach a point when there will be riots on the street as with the poll tax.
I am never going to allow them to firt these things in my house - until they make it a 'legal requirement', and I wouldn't put that past the buggers. Until such time, they can p*ss off with their 'smart' meters.
@ Hello, Julia. If you read my post carefully you will find I said 'until', not that there is such a requirement at present. If they, the PTB, find that we are not fitting them voluntarily they will take away our choice in the matter and fit them willy-nilly.
it cant ever be a legal requirement its your house dont fret about that for 1 minute and while were talking about this you can also tell the meter man your to busy to have your meter read and never let them into your house rented or owned I went for a period of over 2 years testing to see if they can do anything about not getting access they cant you dont need to lower yourself by telling them to f of just dont answer the door when they bang your door.
Had the guy at my door for the 5th time last night trying to get me to have a smart meter in. Told him no and if he comes back again I will be calling the police!
It's pretty obvious that the electricity companies are not pushing these things for the good of our health. It's painfully obvious that there must be a financial benefit for them for customers to have them fitted. Consider it a law of economics!
My energy company kept sending me emails & letters saying I HAD to have a smart meter. I voted with my feet, found a smaller company who didn't say it was compulsory & saved £50 a month. Leave the big companies & go for the smaller ones who, at the moment, value your custom.
@@gavinmatthews2393 What are these jobs that have been created for the up skilled meter readers? As far as i can tell most meter readers either lost their jobs a while ago or moved to the private meter reading companies that work for some of the utilities. In our area we used to have the same guy for ages reading the meters, but in the last couple of years it is a private firm usually with some fresh faced youngster who has to rush around because he has a quota to fill.
That add really annoys me too, and if you check out the very small print it says that money will only be saved by using less energy. Plus of course the Smart meter runs on electricity! So you using extra to start with.
@@gavinmatthews2393 there's always a lot of fluff with things like this. Last one I heard was UK Firefighters are on £35/50k, then another person said how wrong that was, saying many struggle to earn a living wage. So who's right?
@@gavinmatthews2393 yikes, up-skilled! it's a trained electrican's job, make a mistake and the consquences could be horrible, fires, serious shocks etc. I would NOT want an "up-skilled" meter reader person fitting such a serious piece of electrical equipment in my house. It may seem like an easy task to swap a meter, but as with many electrical jobs, there's a devil in the detail ;)
@@gavinmatthews2393 yeh Gav I've been in the biz for years too, getting a bit old now, my training back in the late 70's was complete, that's why the phrase "up skilled" brings on warnings. I've recently seen modern "qualified" electricians producing poor work, even guys getting the "same quals" as mine in a few weeks. It annoys me, they come do work and I inspect it only to find, they'd get asked to re-do their work at the college/employer for being below standard or I correct it. Some have that inspection by the regulatory board, but they even get past that! I dislike getting trades people round now as their standard seem low. I know not all are but..
My gas prepayment meter broke down last year. I was offered a "smart" meter. I told them absolutely no, not now, not ever. They fixed my prepayment meter.
Which energy company fixed your meter? I'm asking because British gas want to change both my gas and electric meters because according to them my electric meter is "Old and is a possible fire risk". Their letter doesn't make sense either because they want to change my gas meter at the same time as my electric meter, even though my gas meter is not as old as my electric meter. I think it's just a scam to get me to have smart meters.
@@samanthahardy9903 I'm with EON and my original post was 3 years ago but so far they haven't asked me to change to a smart meter. The answer would still be the same - no. Not all companies are insisting pre-payment customers change to smart meters. There are more than a few that are happy to keep their customers on the traditional key/card meters. As for British Gas, I'd say they are trying to trick you into getting smart meters. Your current meter isn't going to just suddenly become a fire risk. I'd tell them to get lost (or words to that effect). I was with SSE and British Gas before switching to EON. Was glad I switched as it did save me money and so far I can't fault EON and why I've stayed with them. Been with them now 13/14 years.
Martyn James difficult to believe your bill has doubled and you use less electricity. Certainly the cost of electricity has gone up over the years, but it’s not difficult to compare unit costs each year to see where the extra cost is going.
Martyn James, your energy bill will not double because you have a Smart meter. A Smart meter has the same function as a dumb meter, it records the amount of energy that you consume.
what about smart motorways, "we don't like the way you drove down our motorway" here's a nice big fine, can't pay we'll take it away. a protection racket.
There is no such thing as a smart motor way. They are all exceedingly dumb. There are insufficient refuges thanks to some bone headed civil servant who said that the designed number of refuges was too expensive. People have died because of this bone headed numbskull's decision. If it was up to me I would prosecute him for manslaughter with the same vigour that are soldiers are prosecuted for doing their duty.
Superb video. When we had our old (and i mean old) electricity meter changed, i made sure we just had a regular digital meter. Our old one was a rotating dial type. It was probably working perfectly. They dont make them like that any more.
My friends bills used to be more or less the same as mine. She is deaf and doesn’t understand a lot. Her bills have tripled compared to mine and she’s never be in the house. She doesn’t hardly use her lights her cooker and she lowers the time of when they have showers and they’re still triple compared to my bills, this is a scam from the electricity companies in my eyes
well it is true, that smart meters are not compulsory, it is true that you can have them removed, it is true that smart meters are designed to save energy companies money by not requiring meter readers (the smart meters have modems in them linked to a small aerial and I do believe some even have mobile sim cards in them... all for sending out the bits of info they need) and smart meters also allow the energy company to tailor the peak and offpeak tarrifs to the customer that has one installed, this part is a bastard, because first what they do is check out your energy usage profile, (what they get is a line graph stretched across the first month or so, that will show them your peak and off peak demands) from that they then offer peak and off peak tarrifs based around the opposition of your own demands, example... you like dinner around 5 till 6pm, and then some washing machine use at 7pm, they might call this a peak demand for you, and so will charge you more, meaning you will have to have dinner outwith this time, trust me in all things considered, energy companies dont want their customers to save electric, they want to make money from their customers, its the basic principle of business.... its up to the customer therefore to protect their own interests and if that means making the energy companies guess for their money, then so be it. as for the health issues caused by meters (well that I couldnt honestly say).
Indeed, BHALTOS, but as you assert, no utilities provider is in the business of sparing its client base; what concerns me, are those individuals who do not have the ready moneys to pay their energy provider: This was the fundamental basis as to why 'Fuel Poverty' became a concern, particularly for the elderly, & commensurately an increase in the mortality rates among this age group increased exponentially - a fear of being in debt to these self-same companies - resulting in the turning off of their heating systems during the colder months - the statistics are public record. It's a bloody awful scam, promoted (misguidedly) by govts Europe-wide....there is no economic benefit to these meters - common sense dictates, here.
Scotish Power keep on sending me emails and even phoned me to say that we are in your area installing smart meters make your appointment to have your installed I just reply no thank you its not that hard to stop using so much electricity just switch things off when you do not need them even I can do that without being told to.
Exactly - smart meters only save you money if you are stupid enough not to realise using appliances uses energy. I use the TV if I want to watch a programme - having a meter tell me how much more electricity it take isn't going to make me turn it off, is it?
@@rendezvouzwithrama most people are suprised where energy is being wasted the best personal metering is to have your own clamp meter on the mains cable with a wireless linked display and so you can audit by seeing the usage in real time. Most people know little about standby usage of older model appliances they think are off but could be, in total, making a significant impact on their bill.
My energy supplier were constantly pestering through phone calls and emails using language that at times was threatening. I asked them to put everything in writing especially the bits about being installed for free and the meter would save me money but they wouldn’t. I also reminded them about the rules and laws around miss selling and since then I have been left alone. The smart meter is just for their benefit and not the consumers. The display they want us to keep watching so we stop using things to keep the usage down uses electricity that we are paying for. Smart meters have been the cause of anxiety because people are worried about what different items are costing to run. I know one elderly person that would not put their heating on because they were frightened by how quickly the smart meter reading was changing. Smart meters are also about having control over us. They can switch our energy off when ever they want. In winter when demand is getting close to max achievable supply at peak times, guess what, they will start switching people off. I will not have a smart meter in my house….
I saw this coming and refused my smart meter 2 years ago, and even had to explain it to my partner who thought I was being silly. I'm glad I stuck to my guns and didn't get one. I have also heard a program on Radio 4 saying there are differences between Gen1 and Gen2 units which affect whether you can switch energy suppliers.
The utility company is getting ready to install them where I live. You are given the choice, by the power company, to "opt out" of having a smart meter. That entails paying about $160. up front (to "register" your opt out request), then you will also have to pay an added fee on your bill of $36. EVERY MONTH FOREVER for the expense of having a meter reader come out to manually read your same old analog meter. This is nothing short of outright EXTORTION!
Sounds like a scam, why can't you simply phone in the reading or better yet email them a picture of the meter that way nobody has to make a house call. Maybe there needs to be a class action brought against the utility company because many of these large organisations act like bullies until someone stands up to them.
I don't know about the UK, but in France both those charges are totally illegal. Change your provider. The payment of the meter readers has always been part of the standard charge. We are all paying for the insane Smart meter program, and what they conveniently fail to mention is that the projected lifespan of a Smart meter is under 10 years.....the analogue meter is over 50 years! Are we being scammed? Isn't it obvious?
Scottish power keep trying to get me to accept smart meter, pushing the “no more estimated readings” bullshit. I am billed every quarter and supply a current meter reading every time so estimated does not apply to me. I just ignore them now.
I've been offered a smart meter by my energy supplier but was unsure of its benefits or drawbacks. Your presentation was fantastic and I have, as you segested looked at other information available on this subject. I will NOT have a smart meter fitted to my property and thank you for opening my eyes.
Myth: Appliances on standby use nearly as much energy as in use. NO. Most electronics will use a few watts at most when in standby, as opposed to dozens to hundreds of watts in use, depending on device. People need to be clear on this long standing myth. That said, fully switching off electronics IS still a good idea, because saving all those few watts is still better than using them! There. Clarity and accurate information. You're welcome. :D Back to the actual topic, yes, absolutely avoid the current manifestation of smart meters. Excellent and mostly accurate video, thanks sir.
This was the first time I'd heard that - that appliances on standby use as much as when on - never heard that before. I think many of his comments are taking rare examples and making them out to be common. Some of the things happened with the old meters as well, such as over charging if the meter went faulty.
@@kathleenleslie5527 It's not true though is it, it's just another myth like most of what he has to say. It's easily measured and proved if you have the kit to do it, and more so now if you have a smart meter; you can see just how much power something is taking when turned on or in standby, and there's usually a big difference.
Excellent video. Thank you very much for making and sharing. I've been resisting a smart meter for some time and finally decided to see what information I could glean to back up my refusal. Your video gives me plenty of ammunition to stave off getting one until they do in deed become mandatory.
I am so glad someone like you Joe has made this video, I would never have one fitted, I always knew there was something not quite right about them.Your video has really shown me what I suspected but never realised to what extent they are so bad. I totally agree with everything you say and I hope many, many people watch this video, I for one will pass it on.Thank you.
I own outright, mortgage free, cash buyer but I'm in an apartment block where most don't. I pay 90 pounds a month for onsite staff yet they're so desperate for these smart meters they will now only read my meter once a YEAR. I've explained its illegal and against the law and it's my human right to monitor my usage literally written into the law. I've explained prices have risen 250% on energy so I want to monitor usage, I've explained it will end up with one huuuuge bill etc etc etc but nope, no chance it's just "If you don't like it get a smart meter" that's *Wales and West Housing* if anyone's a lawer and feels like helping people out. They're so desperate for those meters it's insane, whenever the government are desperate like that I automatically won't comply. Thing is, I can easily afford to do so, its all the single mothers in here that will get SMASHED with a huge bill that I feel sorry for not quite understanding the current energy market (I've tried to elucidate but mention energy markets I get glassy eyes). My point is it's not as easy as saying no to anything these days friend. They make your life so unbearably difficult that most end up complying they in fact have to even though its highly illegal. I've always prided myself on being the awkward 1% that doesn't follow the herd but when everyone is running to jump off a cliff and you're the only one running in the opposite direction *you* look like the crazy one 😔
British gas refused to install an in house display unit for my smart meter. This I believe is wrong. Many British gas staff have shouted at me for complaining about their bad service. That includes Alistair Keith the meter installer on June 10th 2019
@@bertrambrathwaite3421 Not much of a reader are we? Clearly Oblivious to George Orwell. Nevermind. Look at it this way, you don't need an in home display now because they now know your daily schedules. They know what time your in or out of your home, whether your home is equipped with an alarm system and not only exactly what products you own such as expensive plasma tv's but exactly what you watch on them and when. They know when you wash. They even know whether you use certain types of medical equipment. I could go on and on but you get the point. I get telephone calls and letters from my electricity supplier. I ask them "Is it a legal requirement?" NO. In that case, I'm not interested. After all, why would I need a machine to tell me I've just switched a light on? I know that already. Why do I need to be told the television is on? I know that, too! Watched to half way through and gave up. I'm an electronic engineer and I can tell you that a great deal of what is being said here is somewhere between wrong and distorted. Like a smart meter can report what TV programme you are watching, or that devices use almost as much energy when in use as when in standby.
I gad a bad feeling about these and have been pestered by my supplier to have one installed. I’m definitely not having one now. Thanks for the video. I already go round switching off things that don’t need to be on. I don’t need a smart meter to tell me what I’m saving by flicking a switch.
Like and agree with video. I got a smart meter in my prev house and my bills spiked plus my meter still needed to be read manually. I am an electrical engineer and find it incredulous that they sell them to us as a benefit. I have the old style meter again now and they will have to pry it from my cold dead hands !
Was due to have a smart meter thursday, guy turned up after driving his van across my freshly seeded verge then marched down the hallway with muddy boots over the carpet. He then told me he was going to inspect all my appliances to make sure they were up to standard. I said "what do you do if you find a bad one", He told me he would then "condemn the equipment". My wife was ill in bed at the time and access is required through her bedroom to a new boiler in a cupboard leading off it. Told him I did not know of any faulty equipment but wanted the meter changed not a household electrical and appliance check. He then said we couldn't do it and I threw him out. E-on complaint submitted. Seems its an excuse to drum up extra work.
All very good, but the main scandal here has not been mentioned... Smart meters have the ability to measure apparent power (Big Clive has mentioned this on a few videos)... This is where capacitive loads (like LED lights) use capacitive dropper power supplies causing a power factor shift... Old meters can't measure this, but smart meters do have that ability, which means in the future, the electric companies can charge you for apparent power, meaning much higher bills
@@Arckivio Nah, they're saving this little nugget for when EVERYONE has smart meters... i.e. no other supplier to turn to. How do you get one taken out. I got one put in 4 years ago just before covid. Feel shite all the time. Got a doctors note but octopus 🐙 won’t entertain it. They’ve said to try other suppliers. They knocked on my door a year ago, I said do you really know the truth about smart meters! After telling him the dangers he looked shocked and said he never knew of what I told him. He still went on to knock at neighbours doors tho!!!!!
Andrew Tongue: Strange thing is they called me today and I quoted things mentioned here. The reply: The Government wants it! I stated clearly: Don’t call again!!!
& you're well within your rights, Sir. Thus far, I've had little dealing with them; no doubt such pestilence shall arrive at my door, but (they) will receive no endorsement or commitment for such a device, save for a few, choice words... ;)
My ordinary meter is not showing the usage, so I asked British Gas for a new one. They said they would provide a Smart Meter. I said on no account did I want one , I wanted the old style one replaced, they said yes, but it would cost me £106! I said in that case I will pay by direct debit, which means I cannot see my usage, but I don't care, I'm not paying that amount.
You missed another important point. When I looked at one of these and calculated the cost of electricity the display unit consumed in 1 year it was £2.76 which doesn’t seem much. Then multiply it by 26 million homes in the UK and we are talking £millions of extra income for the energy companies and that didn’t include the electric the actual meter consumes generating a wifi signal. These prices were also calculated when energy cost less. So they get £millions more income and this is also not very “green” as this is extra energy needing to be generated. Yet they call them smart meters….. Smart for them!
Thankyou for this clearly presented 'English' perspective on smart meters , strengthening consumers' knowledge of their basis for refusing installation of a potentially very dangerous and harmful technological product.
@@schmidtzcargolbull power factor is difficult to explain without a bit of knowledge of AC . basically mains electricity is a varying waveform, if the current taken by a device 'follows' the waveform, it has a 'power factor' of 1 , if its current waveform 'leads' or 'lags' the voltage waveform, it has power factor less than 1, this makes a difference as old meters measured power at the point of where the voltage and current waveforms meet, smart ones can take it as an 'absolute' measurement, such as a low energy light bulb i actually have , rated 11 watts , this is the power 'seen' by old meters,, but current specified is 0.1amps, watts is volts times amps, 0.1amp x mains of 240v is 24watts, so a smart meter could be reading that 11w rated bulb as consuming 24 watts... probably not a good explanation as i cant think of an easier way to describe it, try googling it!

when my smart meter was brought out to the house to be installed, I told the technician I didn't want it. His answer was.... I will then be charged a set amount each month just to keep the analog meter. The initial charge was going to be, if I remember rightly... $100 or so, and then a set amount thereafter, up and over what ever my usage was. I can say, for a fact, I have had more headaches since the install, sometimes they last for days at a time. I know it is the meter, cause when I leave the house, the headache stops after a few minutes. When I return, so does the headache, not to mention the dizziness I experience.
Hi from the UK I have not got one of those things but I can tell you that it is possible to prevent the signals from the meter interfering with your health by basically "insulating" the meter with tin foil or similar to prevent the waves getting to you. Obviously it will need to be from all angles like 360 degrees. I believe it is called a ferridays cage might be worth a look on google
++ @@MrSparks20002++ And if you do that you will effectively isolate the meter from it's communications source which will cause it to shut down and cut off the supply. After all the same radio waves which are affecting your health are those which are communicating with your supplier.

Thanks for this. Government and their corporate pals know too much as it is, anything promoted by them, rarely do as it says without a host of hidden problems cropping up.
I do not think that the fire risk with smart metres is accidental! I noticed with the Maui fires that houses with solar panels seemed to survive and the houses that were burnt were definitely targeted. I believe Maui had just been fully covered with smart metres, which can be electrically pulsed remotely to explode. It was exactly the same in Paradise, California, selective destruction with some houses, completely untouched and trees with the leaves still intact. In Maui, the people are not allowed to return to their homes burned or still standing for the last two months while the debris is cleared and possibly while the smart meter evidence is removed. There is proof of wildfires being used as a weapon of war, and they are very convenient for rich people and the WEF, wanting land that people are refusing to sell. Avoid the word SMART at all costs, it is never going to be for your benefit. Not to mention, the electric vehicles can be a remotely controlled, and when they go on fire, which they do frequently cannot be extinguished, causing two containership fires already. Namaste 🙏
Where we live, you can’t even get proper Internet and that’s not just the reason why I don’t want one we can’t get our phones to work or TV properly. So why would I want a smart meter? 🤷♀️no no no
Very good video, but why not include the point that smart meters can be (and probably will be in the future) set to measure apparent power instead of real power. This means another increase in cost to the consumer. Any appliance with a poor power factor will cost much more to run.
Which is what should happen for as you point out they have poor power factor and that costs the supplier more. I should add that Power Factor correction is fairly simple and good appliances will incorporate it.
As an electronic & electrical engineer, I have studied these (death) meters and I raise the exact concerns regarding fires caused by the feature that allows the energy distributor to switch off your supply. Inside the meter is a semiconductor device that can switch on or off your supply. The problem with a semiconductor switch, is they are not a 100% efficient switch. Such a device has what is called the forward potential voltage to enable the device to operate which is around 0.4 to 0.6 volts. So, 0.4 volts is the minimum voltage required to switch this device on. As Ohms law states, Volts x Amps = Watts. If your house has a load of say 40 Amps, 0.4 volts x 40 Amps = 16 Watts. This might not sound like a problem, but when you consider that these smart meters do not have a metal heatsink to dissipate this 16 Watts (example) of heat, this will build up to a significant amount of heat that is trapped inside the meter. This fact has been overlooked upon the principle of diversity - that there are mainly intermittent loads and not continuous loads, like the example I have offered. But there will be such installations where there will be continous high loads at certain locations or properties. It is therfore no wonder that so many fires have been reported and it will continue to be a problem until (presumably) there will be even more reported house fires caused by smart (death) meters. Although I have the luxury of being off-grid, I have advised all of my customers to reject every opportunity to have a smart meter forced upon them, if not, for this reason only.
Bridge Rec: You're not much of an electrical engineer, I'm afraid. The disconnection device is a chunky relay (not a "semiconductor device"), with contacts rated at 100 Amps. This has to have the coil energised to disconnect, and there's a back-up battery to maintain the disconnection even if there are other supply cuts! The actual heating problems are caused by the poor quality of the phase and neutral terminals and by the inability of the idiots installing them to tighten the terminals properly on to the cable.
@@alberthigginbottom7002 - Thanks for that info, very interesting. A few months ago a friend of mine who is also an EE, had a smart meter fitted while he was working away having discovered that his flatmate let the fitter in his house. He subsquently replaced the meter himself out of protest and we both took the meter apart out of curiosity. We discovered the disconnection device to be a small black box measuring 3x2x2 cm. When after smashing it open, it was nothing more than an over-rated solid state switch, the meter being rated at 60A. I must admit that I failed to make a note of the model as shortly after we dumped it in the recycling bin. I must say though that I'm a little skeptical of the rating of such a tiny relay given that we all know how big a 100A contactor looks like. I've heard about these fires and I obviously made 2+2 equal 5. I've also heard that in the USA & Canada that a non-engineer can attend a two week course to become a meter fitter which is hardly any type of comprhensive learning along with no experience, so it only takes one mistake to make a potential life threatening situation - as you mentioned. Thanks again for enlightening me on this subject, I'll look into this further.
@@bridgerectifier7711 The relay on the two I saw was roughly the size you describe, but was a real single-pole relay with a sensitive coil - it held in (open contacts) with about 3.3V across the coil. Looking at the size of the contacts, I'd have thought that it would struggle to pass more than (perhaps) 40A - and opening the contacts under that kind of load would probably result in an arc big enough to weld the contacts shut!
@@alberthigginbottom7002 - Yeah, I would agree with your assessment. The only time I ever came across a relay with high contact ratings, was a relay made by Potter & Brumfield and they were ridicuously expensive, used at the time in high quality sinewave inverters at 30A SPCO. I suppose it's possible to have a relay of that size, but with all the problems you just mentioned. Only time will tell if we see a massive re-call of these meters?
I got a threatening letter a month ago telling me that I had to have a Smart Meter installed. My house is 8 years old so my analog meter is good. I sent them a letter telling them "over my dead body". Now I just got a call that they want to install a new analog meter. I don't trust them. Will this meter be a smart meter in disguise? What to do?
Do they give out radio interference? Everything seems to these days from plug in wall power supplies, computers and the internet on short wave to my own gas boiler on lw and mw. I suspect next door's gas boiler as well when it fires up in the morning.
Thanks for your video. Unfortunately, I’ve already got a Smart Meter. After seeing this, I now want it removed. You didn’t say whether or not the energy companies will charge for the removal.
typical big company thing pass the cost of upgrades etc on to the customer and not take it out of their profits. there is not going to be one in any property i will ever live in.
I have called all of the energy companies and asked if they can remove the meters which are in the house I need to move into, but cannot before the meters are removed. They all say they no longer have traditional meters in stock. But one of them actually told me that I could have them removed, but it would cost around £270 per meter, which I cannot afford.... So I cannot move into the house since the meters are directly beneath the bedrooms, and I'm affected by the strong emissions they give off around the clock. It's an absolute nightmare 😔
Oh yes all that time ago I saw Margaret Hodge chair of the select committee saying " by the time smart meters r rolled out they will be out of date because any info they the smart meters can be got from ur smart phone &the meters r NOT compolsurey".
Land Rover I'm opposed to the potential misuse of smart meters, but what do you mean they can get the info from your smart phone? Does your smart phone even know how to open the meter cupboard door?
Great video, thank you. I'm currently living in a rented property and my old electric meter seems to have stopped working properly,I'm worried that as a result they will try and make me have a smart meter. Can I refuse? What are my rights, does anyone know? My friend had one installed and it was making some really unpleasant buzzing noises when I went round there.I didn't know what it was at first, 'til they told me it was the new smart meter. Approximately six months later, her previously healthy husband had a severe stroke. They didn't say it was related to the smart meter, and maybe it isn't, but, it did make me wonder, given all the reports about adverse health effects from smart meters that are circulating, even among electricians and engineers.
Australian here, our country too are having Smart Meters rammed down our throats. Besides data mining in Australia Queensland esp. Smart Meters are cutting off during the days of extreme heat on air conditioners, fridges, freezers , NO compensation, even if you have Solar Panels etc, Australian gov't and state gov't have remote controlled access to your address Smart Meters electricity, 'Remote Demand Management Systems' integrated into your Smart Meter. I received a letter NOT asking but stating a Smart Meter will be installed they said because I had asbestos in my meter box, I got an electrician out he said there is nothing wrong with your meter, I then said to the company 'there is nothing wrong with my present meter I do not want one'. Plus they give out small amounts of radiation/energy so it is best placed as far away from living areas
I have a letter from my energy supplier stating that unless i get a "Smart" meter, they cannot sell me renewable energy. Well that smacks of blackmail to me, plus until they can guarantee they are accurate or will continue to work if i change supplier, which at present they cannot.
Ian Johnson the wholesale cost of electricity has increased significantly over the last year. That's what's causing your bills to rise. Nothing whatsoever to do with your meter, it only measures what you use, just the same as every other electricity meter ever.
@@spencerwilton5831 That's funny then because we have had the meters removed and gone back to the old style with cards and our spend has dropped significantly on both gas and electricity.Even the guy who came to remove them said that companies DO charge extra for the smart meters because the companies would otherwise loose money with the "free" smart meters and the shareholders would be up in arms over it.Smart meters, you can stick em !
Ian Johnson "the guy" was telling fibs. Smart meter electricity costs exactly the same as old style meter electricity. Pre payment meters on the other hand often charge more per unit. Look up the various unit rates offered by your supplier if you don't believe me. Pre payment meter over charging has regularly been in the news. The reason you use less on a pre payment meter is because you are always aware of how much you are using, how much you are topping up, making sure you don't run out, possibly getting cut off for a few hours until you can go and buy a top up. I virtually guarantee though that while you may use less, you are actually paying more per unit than someone with a smart meter.

The last week, before I relented they posted a sign on my door saying my house was unfit for occupancy and threatening to remove me. During my time w/out water, I contacted several advocacy groups but none of them were interested in this issue.

not sure if universal but my UK smart water meter operates differently to smart electric meter. some one still has to physically come out and stand over the meter to read it. it can't transmit to a cell tower as it has no power supply powerful enough. so far my bills before and afterwards have been comparable.

John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I TOO am with OVO, I have asked for a copy of the legislation, to be emailed, as yet to be received!
OVO are terrible, I switched to Octopus and my bills more than halved. I don't know about smart meters by OVO are a horrific company.
I was with Ovo. They are incompetent and greedy beyond belief. I changed to Octopus who are a million times better.
I've refused smart meters ever since they started pushing their shit. Even when they have been told numerous times they still keep calling. Then when patience has gone and for the hundredth time you actually lose it and tell them to f off, you get a letter saying that you have refused, more intimidation, making you think you have done something illegal.
They did in Australia, That's when the health maladies start, Including appendicitis like pain in your whole Digestive tract!
Sounds serious, but this guy does comedy... doesn't he? Please elucidate.
Well said. It's about time the public were made aware of the outrageous scam being perpetrated concerning SMART meters.
The public are thick that's why most got smart meters etc
I needed my old electric meter replacing and was told I had to have smart meters, when the installer from british gas came to install them I told him all I wanted was an ordenary dumb meter, he said fine, made a phone call, got the job changed over the phone and fitted the dumb meter I wanted. So proves you don't have to have one and can even get it changed to a basic dumb meter on the instalation day.
If they ever become law, you are exempt from a smart meter if you have a pacemaker.
I told them that I had medical issues and they can't ask me what those issues are, as that information is between myself and my doctor.
I hope this works... Right now they have become the law

They don't save money. My energy bill has doubled. We are using less electricity than ever but it costs more and more.

Martyn James difficult to believe your bill has doubled and you use less electricity. Certainly the cost of electricity has gone up over the years, but it’s not difficult to compare unit costs each year to see where the extra cost is going.
My monthly direct debit has gone up 67% since having a smart meter installed, and I've also been using less electricity.
Dazza then the unit cost has gone up
Martyn James, your energy bill will not double because you have a Smart meter. A Smart meter has the same function as a dumb meter, it records the amount of energy that you consume.

If you believe half of what this ill informed idiot is spouting you're as dumb as he is... do your own research!
My sentiments exactly, Sarah :)
well it is true, that smart meters are not compulsory, it is true that you can have them removed, it is true that smart meters are designed to save energy companies money by not requiring meter readers (the smart meters have modems in them linked to a small aerial and I do believe some even have mobile sim cards in them... all for sending out the bits of info they need) and smart meters also allow the energy company to tailor the peak and offpeak tarrifs to the customer that has one installed, this part is a bastard, because first what they do is check out your energy usage profile, (what they get is a line graph stretched across the first month or so, that will show them your peak and off peak demands) from that they then offer peak and off peak tarrifs based around the opposition of your own demands, example... you like dinner around 5 till 6pm, and then some washing machine use at 7pm, they might call this a peak demand for you, and so will charge you more, meaning you will have to have dinner outwith this time, trust me in all things considered, energy companies dont want their customers to save electric, they want to make money from their customers, its the basic principle of business.... its up to the customer therefore to protect their own interests and if that means making the energy companies guess for their money, then so be it. as for the health issues caused by meters (well that I couldnt honestly say).
I was considering a smart meter a while ago. So glad I tore up the leaflet and threw it in the bin.
Scotish Power keep on sending me emails and even phoned me to say that we are in your area installing smart meters make your appointment to have your installed I just reply no thank you its not that hard to stop using so much electricity just switch things off when you do not need them even I can do that without being told to.

I ignored one letter after another for exactly this reason. Use less, spend less, simple.
They eventually stopped writing
Exactly - smart meters only save you money if you are stupid enough not to realise using appliances uses energy. I use the TV if I want to watch a programme - having a meter tell me how much more electricity it take isn't going to make me turn it off, is it?
@Weaton EXACTLY FFS. @rendezvous TOTALLY RIGHT
@@rendezvouzwithrama most people are suprised where energy is being wasted the best personal metering is to have your own clamp meter on the mains cable with a wireless linked display and so you can audit by seeing the usage in real time.
You want to add costs for your company why should you expect everyone else to subsidise your life-style choices?

Sounds like a scam, why can't you simply phone in the reading or better yet email them a picture of the meter that way nobody has to make a house call. Maybe there needs to be a class action brought against the utility company because many of these large organisations act like bullies until someone stands up to them.
I don't know about the UK, but in France both those charges are totally illegal.
Change your provider. The payment of the meter readers has always been part of the standard charge.

Well done. Clear & concise. Thanks for posting!
Also smart meters measure the power factor and they will eventually charge you more - like commercial properties. Check yourself.
What is a power factor?
I agree they will eventually charge for power factor. But everything said in this video is a load of tosh.

Rang Ovo to complain about scandalous amount i am being charged for electric and gas.She told me i was using £1.50 per day so would raise a investigation and would be refunded. 4wks later i rang again to be told there was no complaint raised and i was using £2.50 per day. She also said i am using £2 gas a day despite me telling her i was'nt using any gas. Like dealing with lawless gangsters being supported by tories
I can imagine that the recent hike in energy prices we have all suffered is in part to cover the cost of the smart meters
when my smart meter was brought out to the house to be installed, I told the technician I didn't want it.

++ @@MrSparks20002++ And if you do that you will effectively isolate the meter from it's communications source which will cause it to shut down and cut off the supply. After all the same radio waves which are affecting your health are those which are communicating with your supplier.

My simple life 'hack' - if it has the word 'Smart' or equivalent in its title then avoid like the plague.

How is it that the data protection laws allow your data to be sold in the first place and, worse, without your knowledge and/or consent?
I have called all of the energy companies and asked if they can remove the meters which are in the house I need to move into, but cannot before the meters are removed. They all say they no longer have traditional meters in stock. But one of them actually told me that I could have them removed, but it would cost around £270 per meter, which I cannot afford.... Ian Johnson the wholesale cost of electricity has increased significantly over the last year. That's what's causing your bills to rise. Nothing whatsoever to do with your meter, it only measures what you use, just the same as every other electricity meter ever.

That's funny then because we have had the meters removed and gone back to the old style with cards and our spend has dropped significantly on both gas and electricity.Even the guy who came to remove them said that companies DO charge extra for the smart meters because the companies would otherwise loose money with the "free" smart meters and the shareholders would be up in arms over it.Smart meters, you can stick em !

Nope !!
I can GUARANTEE you that we DO pay LESS now on the old style meters than we did on the "smart" meters. The guy taking it out even said as much. We have monitored our spend on both types of meters and we ARE paying LESS on the old style card meters than on the "smart" meters.
The government can shove them where the sun don't shine. We refuse to have anything to do with them. They are a big con,and in my opinion, just another way for the government to snoop on the British public !
There is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. Remember that and you will be fine.
No free lunches for us but lots of them for MP's, EU top officials and power company execs who all seem to care so much about what is good for us. Cut out the free lunches and free booze for Jean-Claude Juncker, save a fortune and pass on savings to the citizens. Lets put smart meters on all those people to tally up how many lunches and perks they consume each month!
