My understanding is, currently, if an energy provider want's to cut you off they have to obtain a Court Order for access to your home as, otherwise, they'd be trespassing if you denied them access. A smart meter can disconnect you remotely literally by a click of a computer mouse at head office. Who benefits here I wonder.......??

I have a friend who works as a collector for a large electric company and he told me these meters are hazardous to your health, that’s not all they are easy to hack into by hackers and they can get your personal information. They control your usage as well. Some of the side effects being near these meters are headaches, heart palpitations, dizziness, and shortness of breath. I opt out from having one installed on my home. Because of that I have to pay an extra $16 a month and I am ok with that. Even you you have one you can still opt out.

What annoys me is that we have had the cost of the meter roll out put on our bills without our consent. It’s hundreds of pounds to get the detail of what I’m using. I have already had power monitoring in my house for 10+ years so I know I’ve reduced my usage down to about 80 watts base load. There’s no way I can reduce it further without turning off things I actually use so a smart meter is not going to benefit me.
On top of that the damm things are able to measure power factor and charge accordingly at the moment we don’t pay for power factor adjustment.
My parents have one installed and the home unit crashes on a weekly basis. If they can’t program that then I don’t trust them with accurate metering and security.

Last year I was forced to have a smart meter if I wanted to continue my energy supply with E-on so I thought to save hassle of changing supplier I would finally give in. I had one fitted but just over a year on I have health problems including insomnia and I did not really think about it until today but the meter is high on the living room wall in my small old cottage. It is in a wooden box and directly above it on the first floor is my bed and my head is in line with the box and about 4 feet above the meter when I am lying down with only wooden floor boards as a barrier. I have just emailed E-on about this and asked if there are any health risks. I know they are going to be
biased but it will interesting to see what they say. I have also just ordered an EMF reader to check emissions with. It is all a bit worrying, especially since this is a small one bedroom cottage and I cannot move my bed. I read in the USA these meters must be positioned outside of properties and also you should make sure you are at least 50 feet away from one where you sleep.

Worth knowing is that the new Smart meter not only gives the installing energy company the facility to measure all use, the ability to switch power supply off, but also to turn the meter into a prepayment meter that supplys power with the use of a prepayment card or prepayment key. Something that without the Smart Meter the energy company would have to obtain a court order. This has previously acted as a level of protection to ensure no vulnerable people were illegally cut-off.
Dire poverty in itself is no reason to live without hot food or a warm home.

Search for a special paint that blocks EMF radiation. And paint the walls on the side of the house with the meter. Just had 4 smart meters installed in my apartment building. Right on the other side of my bedroom wall. With another 4 meters 10 feet away on the building next to us. They seem to turn on around the same time everyday for an hour. We can tell because our bodies get all tingly, then pin pricks, followed by aches and pains all over, headaches, dizziness, chills, and tiredness. The effects can last the rest of the day. So our best bet is to avoid our apartment during that hour they turn on. It's annoying, but it's better than feeling like $hit. It's not subtle either, we literally feel like we're being hit by something.

Wow. So, FYI, fight it. Call them, and complain. Ofcource do it with conviction, but no derogatory remarks. GOOD LUCK.

Thanks for comment@@tracybird8668 I guess your in USA? What doesn't make sense is why price goes up with the same use.
Good you got it sorted out.. Did they use estimates that you disputed? These meters meant to keep readings up to date, but so many in UK still charge using estimates even if smart meter installed.
I'm totally against getting 1, for many reasons. They want total control remotely to ammend tariffs , upgrade new software & possibly ration supply.
Find myself in unenviable situation of no working gas meter, no readings taken in over a year due to the covid situation & illness.
I too was forced into a digital gas meter > early version of smart> now won't wake up for reading (dead battery?) , installed only 1 year ago & broken already. The old analogue one worked fine 25years!
Now find Energy company won't even come to swap it out unless I take a Smart Type2 with built in sim repeater every half hour.
They happy with high estimates & now I will never know how much gas I saved heating over Winter, as used my coal fire to heat 1room.
UK home energy costs shot up 54% on 1st April due to mismanagement during covid. Now they shoot themselves in foot with green pledges & sanctions that hurt us more than anyone else.
Some customer help act like they own the company & take advantage of elderly or disabled people. Really feeling at the end of my tether.
This World has changed so much & not for the better imo. Best wishes Tracy. 🙂

Given that those GSM standards are due to be phased out by 2033 and some GSM providers are going to sunset GSM 2 & 3 this year. Looks like even the newest 'SMART' meter will be next to useless in 2033, but possibly before then.

I had a smart meter, the problem with it was it wasn't very smart, in fact I'd say it was really dumb, the display was about 30 foot from the feed and the signal was on 2.4GHZ Wi-Fi, every Wi-Fi signal in reach including my neighbours Wi-Fi signals caused confusion with the readings, some days it subtracted KW from my running total, I have read about problems with the comunication between the meter and the supply company but my problem was all in house, Have you ever had problems with a Wi-Fi device at home ? OK imagine your electricity payments being dependant on Wi-Fi..it was in a word a NIGHTMARE, I've changed electricity companies since then and have no smart meter now, my new company is asking for permission to fit one, I don't reply.

They operate at Bluetooth power levels so far less than your cell phone or wireless internet from a router.. Most of the meters can operate on demand when the meter reader sends out your meters code number it wakes it up and dumps the stored data.. If you have the home monitoring optional display that display can request data every second or two.. Some meters use a bit more powerful wireless signal that is the same as the wireless network device in your cell phone or laptop which is still far below any hazardous RF level unless you sleep with that device stuffed inside your body.. A cell phone especially the older ones that had stronger transmitters in them do and are a use hazard if you hold them next to your head for hours while talking.. There is another type of smart meter that uses the power wires themselves as a giant wired network that use a low powered UULF frequency to communicate with neighborhood hubs or a hub at a substation and there is zero health risk.. The commercial radio and TV broadcast signals that pound us daily are a far greater combined hazard as is the power line leakage from the huge amounts of AC wiring 50/60hz of modern life.. So basically this is a nonsense scare propaganda that should be filed away as such..

It amazed me how many 'sheep' agreed to having a smart meter fitted. My analogue meter does the exact same thing, only I get to read it and pay for what I have used. A smart meter is just another stab against our freedoms and rights in my view. They can be switched off remotely, try that with an analogue meter..lol The ONLY reason they fitted smart/dumb meters was to try and catch those who re-wired them to bypass the meter. I know of at least 3 people who grow a certain plant and they manage to bypass the smarty pants meter easily. Instead of wiring every home directly from the junction, virtually impossible, they decided to go with smart meters so they could read 'live' data coming from each persons home. They DO NOT save you any less than an analogue meter! A meter is just that - a means to gather information about how much electricity/gas you are using. The day will come when I will be given a choice, either have a smart meter or we'll terminate your supply. In that case, you'd better cut it off then, because I will NEVER have a smart meter purely on principle.

V.A.T. was an old E.E.C. ( European Economic Community 1970) tax. It ( V.A.T.) was devised by a German Economic Adviser and named thus :- " Mehrwersteuer," which translated to English means ," More Worth Tax." As the new ( unelected by UK) E.U. " European Union," morphed into the one size fits all / square pegs into round holes quango-corp we Brits grew to despise, we decided to ditch it in a majority referendum in 2016. V.A.T. was therefore an E.E.C./ E.U. tax and as we have now officially left the E.U., NO British person should be paying it anywhere in the British isles. If you have any doubts about any of the above ?, you can double check online at Wikipedia by asking ," Is V.A.T. a British Tax ?." Guten Tag ! ( Good Day)

In one part of the video you waffle on about a smart meter being used to tell what appliances are being used in your house. A few minutes later when discussing the limitations of the current technology you state that smart meters cant be used to tell a provider what devices you are using. Doesn't sound like you really know anything about smart meters.
My house in Australia has a smart meter...it allows my energy retailer to charge me time of use tariffs that vary depending in the time of day. Between 1000 and 1500 hrs is the cheapest time for using grid power so I maximize my energy usage during that period. I also charge my home battery during that period if my PV system output is low and then run the house off the battery during times of the day when power prices are at higher tariffs.

It’s not really the home owner who’s the problem…it’s normally other family members who don’t pay the bills who cost the most . (Yes tell your kids to turn of the expensive computers before going to school.
Also on safety….I’ve rectified/ identified many gas leaks and newly installed boilers with safety and carbon monoxide issues.

I am now retired but have previously worked for a UK SMART meter manufacturer including in an advisory role during the development of SMETS 1 and 2 as a manufacturer. There are some truths in your report but I was left unconvinced by many of the arguments you raised and felt they were inclined to unsubstantiated fear mongering especially regarding health risks and data privacy which were hotly examined during product testing. The local comms in the home uses an encrypted wi-fi method exactly the same as home computers and devices. The comms to the head end (data collector) is via an encrypted mobile GPRS interface and unlike your normal mobile phone has additional layers of protection and encoding. I do not suggest any system is impervious to data breach but an attacker would have to work extremely hard to "control your home or gather your consumption data". Also, with respect, I doubt your frugal electricity revenue warrants so much attention or subversive effort.
Where i do agree is the idea that SMART meters will save you money, this is a smoke screen. The most energy savvy energy consumers are those already on "pre paid" token meters which cut off if they exceed their credit and need a top up from the local shop.
Some 6 or 7 years back the cost of a HAN ( Home Area Network) SMART gas, electricity, comms hub and IHD was an additional £250, estimated, plus additional install cost of around £40 , so that has to be found from somewhere !!!
    No, the real benefactors were
    1) the government DECC who could say they were pushing through climate reduction initiatives
    2) the energy providers who are able to introduce even more complex tariffs to bamboozle consumers
    3) the local energy transmission companies (wire in the street) would have extensive access to network intelligence (load demand monitoring at specific areas / times) they would otherwise never be able to afford.
The honest truth is that for most households, saving lost energy is a far better investment of the SMART costs. The arguments are complicated further by solar panels and car chargers, these need detailed and holistic consideration.
I bought a basic current monitoring unit IHD for my home and that gives me my instantaneous consumption and cummulative cost. I ring in my energy readings to my supplier about every 3 months (takes 5 minutes) to get an accurate estimate which is then confirmed by them once per year.
I think the notion of SMART meters is over complicated. People will switch off lights and reduce heating anyway when cash leaves their account.

    • @9ernie9
      @9ernie9 Год назад

I've been taking my gas and electricity meter readings every Sunday evening since 2009, so I can see how much I'm using. I'm also aware of how I can reduce my consumption. I don't need a smart meter to show me, so I agree that the "could save you money" argument is nonsense.
I go online and submit my meter readings on the last day of each month, so I never get an estimated bill.
My main worry is the energy companies being able to vary the tariffs to discourage you from using energy at certain (peak?) times of the day.

    • @stillstanding123
      @stillstanding123 Год назад

@@deang5622 Correct. At the time of SMETS 1 that was the case but under SMETS 2 the comms component was required to be interchangeable on the wall without removing the meter so it could be easily upgraded to other radio or data network systems.
So the rush by some energy providers to grab early market share backfired, the SMETS 1 units could not operate on alternative frequencies.
In part this situation was caused by failure to identify the DCC ( Data Collection Centre) ownership and establish comms standards to the head end. So the cart was developed before the horse !

1, smart meters send the readings via the ee phone network to a government office, it is apparently incripted so the government can't read the data, but I don't trust that. The data is then sent to the supplier.
2, the display is updated ever 5 seconds but only displays an average output, averaged aprox hourly

    • @philharris9631
      @philharris9631 Год назад

Erm ... no ... there are two ways that smart meters report your meter readings back to the energy provider. This can either be low power RF or via GSM modem (depending on your location and the method used in your area). It does not get relayed back to a "government office" and then passed on to your supplier, it is reported back directly to the supplier in response to them sending your meter a "give me a reading" instruction.

The last time I looked for an energy deal (my current fixed tariff is about to end) I got what seemed an excellent quote but then found out I would be forced to have a smart meter. So it seems there is some "price strong arm tactics".

Do what I did...told them I couldn't pay, so they'd have to remove their meters (gas and Leccy) and take me to court for the money owed.
They tried the threats and I laughed, told them I'd recorded the call, then hung up.
They tried for a few days and got the same response each time.
Just under four weeks later they 'discovered' a tariff to my liking.
      Greed is their driving force.
Once they realise the threats won't work they come to their senses.
There is no law compelling you to accept a fuel supply, which means no money for them, as they have to remove their meters...at their cost, regardless of what lies they try tell you.
They'd sooner accept your terms than lose that revenue and risk you going to another supplier.

They couldn’t find a charging point anywhere and the rac guy said “I’m not an electrician, it’s basically a laptop on wheels” now this family are stuck with this expensive useless car 😅😅

I will stick with My Analogue Meter Thanks
If its cold I turn the heating on if its Dark I turn a light on when I cook I turn the oven on
and so on, I use what I need and need what I use , a Smart Meter would fear monger Me into NOT using what I need when I need it and Who do You know ever looked at their Meter other than to take a reading?
Also there have been Health issues associated with them as well as fire risks not to mention the much higher Bills.
Remember Nothing is Free they are making huge profits from this and when EVs become used
in greater numbers and they have to be charged from home that Smart Meter will be
racking up the Watts and the Pounds but it wont stop people charging their Cars.
And when they try to bully and scare monger people into having then there has to be a ulterior motive and for that reason alone I wont have one.

You mirror my thoughts, the health issue in particular.
After a couple of months studying the subject, I made a point of contacting my supplier to warn them I would happily take them to court and supply study result after study result from more qualified scientists than the few pet mouthpieces they retained and I'd turn it into a media circus to let the public know.
They, rightly took me seriously, so never pushed it, until recently, when I objected to the massive price hikes, after my old tariff had come to an end, when they said a smart meter was part of any deal.
I told them to remove their old meter and take me to court for my bill and hung up...and hung up for the next two days, whenever they called.
I heard nothing for almost four weeks, awaiting a court summons, but they rang, instead, offering me a reasonable new tarrif with no smart meter involved.
      Respect to you! 👏👏👏👍

There was a case in the US where information from a smart meter was used in court as evidence, this related to use of hot water and cleaning a crime scene. The extra usage came into focus when compared to the average daily use of the tenant. The same could happen here. imagine saying that you live alone, then the meter grasses you up as you have 2 baths during the evening. I doubt it will be long before all agencies are able to benefit from the information harvested.
Someone also mentioned the other day, that when combined with a dimmer switch in the house, that the electrical field is pulled in further.
    Regardless. not having one.

Smart meters are clocking up power usage when no power is being used on particular types of device. Heat pumps seem to case a smart meter to register more electricity that they could not possibly be using. It may be a particular type of electric motor in some heat pumps which generates a waveform which confuses the smart meter electronics.

Just a side note, a generation 2 onwards can be changed remotely by suppliers. Also DNO'S want everybody in/on streets, estates etc to install them so they can lower the voltage at off peak times (during the day usually) potentially saving THEM energy. (Called smart street/local) problem arises some household appliances will not work correctly and go faulty because of lower voltages.
Smart meters are about CONTROL ONLY !!

      Nonsense.
In the UK, the declared voltage and tolerance for an electricity supply is 230 volts -6%, +10%. This gives an allowed voltage range of 216.2 volts to 253.0 volts.
Appliances are designed to work within these limits (and a bit more above/below) Nobody will save anything though. For example, a kettle has an element with a resistance, that resistance does not change. If the voltage is lower, the kettle will draw less amps and therefore less power (kW) BUT it will take longer to boil the same amount of water.

Smart meters cannot change the supply voltage, nor can everyone in a street having a smart meter make this any easier as this can only be done by changing transformer taps in sub-stations. There are genuine arguments that can be made against smart meters, but it seems that many bogus ones are being spread by videos such as this one.

Hang on a sec... at 5:00 you say your supplier can remotely cut off or restrict supply in the event of non-payment - but then two minutes later you say that smart meters only transmit traffic one way - which prevents updates being pushed to the device. That being the case, how can a supplier "command" a meter to disconnect?

    • @spona111
      @spona111 Год назад +1

They can transmit data both ways, for instance, for a firmware update. However, suppliers are currently prevented from remote disconnect/connect for safety reasons, i.e., in the case of disconnect, someone may need vital medical equipment, and in the case of reconnect, someone may have left the oven on. For this reason, Ofgem have ruled suppliers cannot disrupt the supply remotely.
