  • I was given some Princeton Aqua Elite and Neptune watercolor brushes for Christmas, and today I'm road testing the Aqua Elite Number 4 and 8 rounds as I practise two watercolor techniques for landscape and floral painting.
    00:00 Introduction
00:34 Preparing and explaining my materials
05:09 Landscape stage 1 with Princeton Neptune number 8 Round
    14:45 An impromptu sketchbook flip-through
15:45 Leaf shapes and stems with Princeton Neptune number 8 Round
20:49 Leaf veins with Princeton Neptune number 4 Round
23:55 A Zentangle tangent and another sketchbook flip-through
25:40 Back to the leaf veins
28:09 Adding some background detail to the leaves
31:03 Landscape second layer with Princeton Neptune number 8 Round
38:05 Finishing the leaves with pen details
44:33 Two minutes of animal magic from our homestead in France
The animals featured at the end of this video are (chickens and sheep named from left to right):
    - Arthur the Studio Cat
    - Mrs White, Mrs Grey, Gabriel, Cagney, Lacey, Mrs Black & Sable the chickens
    - Cuddles, Molly, Larry, Milly, Corona, Covid, Dora and Karmen the Jacob sheep
    - Zen (formerly known as Russell) the Studio Dog
    - Countless tiny spiders who had spun miles of gossamer silk overnight
    And finally...
    - Liam (the Best Golden Retriever in the World)
And patiently waiting to be featured in an upcoming video are Frankie the Other Studio Cat, Oriel, Louis and Mao Mao the House Cats, Ruby the Keeshond, and Lottie (the Other Best Golden Retriever in the World).

Made me a happy - beautiful scenery. Reminds me of when I lived in Germany. And you have a Jack Russell - I had two in my life - they were amazing dogs. I have Dachshunds now - but Jacks always have a place in my heart. Thanks and hope you guys have a wonderful day.

Hi Diane, So glad you are going to be working with your grandson in art. That‘s such a blessing for him. Many years ago I read - or someone said - that a person can‘t teach, they can only enable learning to take place. I think that‘s true. I personally always find it nigh on impossible to absorb what people try to „teach“ me, but I‘m capable of learning if the mood is right! And I wouldn‘t know what to do without nature around me in its many forms xxx

That was an interesting comment on teaching. I know when it came to writing, I did everything backwards to the way I was taught. I would write my story and figure out the outline afterwards. Always got a good mark and teachers were none the wiser, lol. It’s a bit like painting leaves and drawing them later! That always works for me too! I find I learn best by doing, especially when it comes to artistic things. I don’t think the Lord ever used blueprints or outlines, and look at all this beauty around us!

Diane, I love the landscape just the way it is….. I appreciate your feedback on the brushes. I am currently looking for some new ones. The ones I have are getting worn out. Your whimsical approach to watercolor is inspiring me to move away from realism to loose strokes. An old art teacher once told me my work looked more like “paint by number”. Another thing, I do ‘zen doodles’, challenging myself to do one a day for a year. I got bored following the “rules” so I section each into 5 spaces and draw in each, usually trying to follow a theme. I admit my drawing skills are improving. Thank you for sharing your passion for painting.

I love my Princeton brushes!! The Aqua Elite has a very fine point and holds water nicely. My Princeton Neptune #10 brush's point is not as sharp as the Elite line but it has a fatter belly which would help hold more paint. Synthetic brushes don't hold as much paint as a sable brush but as we all know, synthetics are more affordable for many of us. A Princeton Heritage will be my next brush from this company to try. The Heritage line was developed by master brush maker Naohide Takamoto from Japan many years ago. I enjoyed today's demo!

Hi Diane, I found my message and here it is:I Wanted so much to see the rest of your work in your paper pad. What kind go paper did you use in that pad. The small glimpses were not enough! I did see the last video too and began my comments but was rudely LOL, kidding, interrupted by my hubby telling me dinner was done. Wow, it was anything but rude. I forget what my comments were in the beginning and RUclips erased it when I checked back in. I thought the leaves exercise was great and I plan to do something like that when I get a minute. I bought 2 sets of the Ganzi Tambi paint sets (and I already had one I bought 6 years ago. The new ones came in one day!! Wow, they look beautiful. I also got Kuretake's Starry Colors (5 shades of gold and 1 pearl. I will be busy swatching them all. I have the Coliro set of golds, but thought maybe Kuretake had paint that is better so I'll find out. I have seen Ceecee's work extensively and she loves this one brand of gold paint. Can't remember.the name, but I attempted to order a full pan of it, but my order wouldn't go through. I hope I'm happy with my Finetec and Kuretake golds. I was thinking of a flock of bird in silhouette in the sky and perhaps a lone sailboat in the water.
What if it had no sailor on it, mmmmmm, a real mystery. The painting did have an ethereal feel, almost eerie too and lonely. Great overall subject of the sky and water--with that there are many things that could be added like one of those big buoys that ring out in what sounds like a very sad note, kind of like loneliness. Now my ideas seem too somber..Oh well, perhaps I'll do it on a sad day
Oh also, I adore your sense of humor. The things you say under your breath are so funny--you keep me laughing a lot. And, Diane, please don't worry if you're not always talking about art during your painting sessions, we love to hear little tidbits about you. I'm enthralled about the many countries you've lived in. What a life you've had! Are you still in France cuz the scenes you showed at the end of this video reminded me of England except England fields are nearly always groomed beautifully. I truly truly want to live in England, I've been in love with it since I was a young girl reading Georgette Heyer (did I spell that correctly? P.S. I particularly loved when you talked about your Mom and the angel ornament. I'm glad it holds a special spot on your tree each Christmas. And also enjoyed how girls loved to go to London to buy Christmas goodies. Fun.. I know we could be good friends too cuz I'm also an older watercolor person. I don't know if I'm allowed to call myself an artist as I only sold my artworks at a shop in Jerome, AZ. It sits on a mountain in front of my house and at night you can see it twinkling with lights all thru town. I've seen it miles away which is especially sweet. It has about 400 residents and is an artist community with cute shops and restaurants everywhere and it's small enough to see the whole town if you come in the morning. It had the best pizza up there, but then the foolish owner moved to Sedona about 10 miles away and he didn't even make the pizza anymore--huge disappointment--and the "new" pizza stunk. It used to be so much fun going up there and watching the owner guy throw his pizzas up just like in NYC and maybe Italy too (of course he was Italian). I've gotten so off track here. I'm a watcher and subscriber of your channel and love it. XOXOJANE

Hi Jane and welcome to the channel! I don’t think I’ve seen a comment from you before but I really enjoyed reading your big one! I think you’ll be happy with the Finetek and Kuretake golds, they are the ones I use and they are fine. I’m glad you enjoy my rambling, I just do it as naturally as I can, so it does vary from video to video depending on my mood, what has happened in the day and probably my hormones! Even post menopausal girls get hormones! England has changed a lot over the years and isn’t the country I was born in. I live in France now, and yes, it is very similar where I am, in Brittany, the landscape is a lot like the south of England. In England there are too many people and not enough space and the country is suffering from economic problems that are going to drag people down into depression even further. I won’t go back. Your little town in Arizona sounds lovely. I’m sure we would be friends if I lived near you, my one regret is that I don’t have friends in France, but I do have my wonderful RUclips pals and that’s such a bonus! Sending you love and encouragement for your painting and have a lovely day Jane xxxxx

I can’t understand what she says!” And my Mum said “Auntie Joan is from Newcastle, she’s as English as you or me!” Well, she really didn’t sound as English as we did, in my ears!!!! The Geordies have held on to their dialect and their accent a lot longer than the rest of the country!!!

UGGHH! I can’t get to the community page, even in my browser, from my iPad anymore.. 😖. Oh well..I’ll try my phone later. I wanted to ask your advice on something, I couldn’t find if you’d reviewed these before. I’ve been offered a 1/2 price deal on 2 sets…or rather 1 of 2 sets. They both have their pros and cons, but I was really curious if you’ve used/tried either one. Since I’m doing both Western and traditional painting-both of these fit that in different ways. The first is a 6-set of cool and warm primaries from QOR, in tubes. Basically, the pro is that unique binder in QOR enables it to be used on Xuan with no other medium needed. They are the ONLY western paints I’ve experimented with that do this AND hold up to wet-mounting. The con? You can’t mix them with any other brands without getting major separation, problems with mounting, or unintended muddy mixes. I think the reason, specifically in this “primary” set is that 4 of them are multi-pigments, including a cerulean blue with PW6, making it VERY opaque..NOT what I’m looking for and I’d need to use something like my DS…leading to mixing 2 brands and likely issues with mounting. While I LOVE the way QOR travels in wet on wet…we don’t have wet on wet in Chinese painting..I have found that I have to be extremely careful when attempting Gongbi painting with QOR…I had to throw out a detailed painting I started last week..I wasn’t that far along, but between Dr Kitty Leela’s “assistance”..a funky ultramarine paw print above my bunny…or my own goof, just a tad too much ultramarine on the tigers socks= blue Rorschach blot. You can’t erase or lift off cicada wing sized Xuan. So..I practiced some calligraphy on it, let it dry..and crumpled it up so Leela can go get stoned on whatever TCM herb in my ink that drives her nuts. (She doesn’t ink or drink it, it’s something in the floral smell 🤷🏼‍♀️. Fiona and my other Chinese tutor in China insist one of her past lives were as an Emperor or Painting/calligraphy master’s cat.)
Next brand: Rosa’s gallery, 12 pans (although they’re wider than usual western pans) of single pigment color. I have NO experience with this brand..HOWEVER, they promise and list that the paint contains ONLY Pigment and gum Arabic…which means they SHOULD be easy to mix with Ming Jiao (a kind of glue in Chinese paints similar to ox gall, but made from fish bones..no, it has no smell, but if you get Chinese paints that DO, This is why) and/or peach sap gum, (I have used both in brush water when using single pigment or mineral western paints to get the paint to behave on my cicada wing paper..it’s the most used in Gongbi painting, but also the most delicate). I’ve got some single pigment pans of handmade paint that also contain only pigment & GA and it works great! In reviews I’ve seen, they seem to be great paints that mix well and being single pigment with no “unique” binders; I would assume they would play well with other paints. The cons? It’s half as much of each paint (the QOR tubes are the tiny 5mls; the pans are half pans) for the same price…but there’s 12 half pans. 2nd and the most important..I can’t find anyone I follow who has tried them. (With one exception and my consideration for this set is based on her review). I know some Chinese artists who now solely paint western style-none have tried Rosa’s. In fact Eric told me to ask some watercolor artists in the UK..since they’re made in Ukraine. 🤷🏼‍♀️. I have no idea about how they they’ll do on mounting and I can’t find any samples to try. Any ideas for or against?
Your hand: I am currently covered in bruises from falling. The main reason I’m TRYING to move is that my “new” doctors (3 of my doctors retired last Oct and Nov) have switched up my medications..I went from being fairly active, never in pain, pretty stable and functioning normally and sleeping most nights for 6-8 hours..now? My pain wakes me up every 1 1/2-2 hours, my hours themselves are completely messed up, my legs are giving out every few days and I’ve become so afraid of falling, I live in bed most of the day. I was born with 2 rare genetic disorders and between degenerative connective tissue disease and the spinal injury that ended my medical career..and never healed correctly; in my mid-60’s I’m having major issues. They say I need spinal, knee and hip surgery ASAP, me and my girls don’t trust the local surgeons..believe me, we have reasons. I’m TRYING every alternative treatment I can to get through until we can find me affordable housing. My bestie suggested both the Vit C, arnica (which I already had plenty), a CBD Balm (NOT some off-brand from Am), Vit B6. This is not just my bruising, which..I have severe osteoporosis and get VERY frequent fractures..I don’t even feel the bruises anymore; it’s mainly for my RA AND OA. (I apparently unconsciously raise my hand and say “wait cosmos, only 1 form of arthritis? No! I need 2 to go with my 2 rare genetic disorders!” 🙄😂). She’s bringing me the B6 she uses tomorrow along with some kind of ancient Russian remedy, (her hubby is Russian). As long as she doesn’t force me to drink more pine needle tea. Sorry..yes, it helped my coughing, BUT..THE TASTE…🤢) She’s taking me up to the hospital for tests, x-rays and an MRI. I’m REALLY hoping I don’t get admitted again…we’d hoped I would have moved by now…but Buffalo’s weather has also been an issue. I also have a stomach issue and need to be “roto-rooted” out every year-my pancreatic and hepatic ducts clog up). Last year was a nightmare. We’re not sure though if we can wait much longer…I’m packing a bag with art stuff tonight, just in case. Last time..after a fall and fracture last week; I convinced my wonderful Hospitalist/ER Doc Buddy here to let me come home the next day. I can take better care of myself here at home…even under these conditions. For my stomach, I have to go to a hospital 45 miles (almost an hours drive away) and…well…I got both a Hospitalist and a nurse fired last year for what happened. I REALLY don’t want to go back to that place. If I have to though..I want to be prepared…
Let me know if you have any opinion on Rosa Gallery..😊😸

Hi Elaine, first let me say you have my deepest sympathy for your health problems. I will pray for you and send you my love and best encouragement. About the paint, I don‘t have any experience of painting in the Chinese style or on Chinese traditional paper. But I have used both Qor and Rosa watercolors. Rosa I used in tube format. It seems somewhat stickier than the average watercolor paint to me. And the Quinacridone Gold I had bought as an experiment seemed duller than the Winsor and Newton I was used to. Qor I have the starter primary set. I found it a tad unmanageable, with the phthalocyanine blue going bonkers when it touched water. I haven‘t experimented much with it, but at the moment I have to say that my Japanese Kuretake paints are my main workhorse, as they are punchy and obedient. I don‘t know if this is of any help to you at all, but I‘m always happy to share the little I know! Good luck and happy painting and give Kitty Leela a hug from me and a miaow from our five!!! Xxx
