‘This is a song about an Irish dictionary’
‘That’s right, a word book, a focal leabhair”
Oh get out your focal leabhair, get out your focal leabhair.
And we’ll have you speaking Irish in a half an hour.
Sea means yes and Níl means no.
Get out your focal leabhair and we’ll all have a go.
The sweets that you chaw, there called a milseáin.
A motorcar used to be a gluaisteán.
Tíg is house and doras is door.
Buy a focal leabhair and you’ll learn a lot more.
    Chorus
Oh get out your focal leabhair, get out your focal leabhair.
And we’ll have you speaking Irish in a half an hour.
Sea means yes and Níl means no.
Get out your focal leabhair and we’ll all have a go.
If someone says to you, Conas ate tú?
What they’re saying in English is, how are you?
Slán leat is how you say goodbye.
Amuigh faoin spéir is under the sky,
    Chorus
Oh get out your focal leabhair, get out your focal leabhair.
And we’ll have you speaking Irish in a half an hour.
Sea means yes and Níl means no.
Get out your focal leabhair and we’ll all have a go.
In school if you ever wanted to go to the loo.
This bit of Irish will be handy to you.
Cead agam dul amach, má sé do thoile.
The teacher’s asleep, Tá an múinteoir ina chodladh.
    Chorus
Oh get out your focal leabhair, get out your focal leabhair.
And we’ll have you speaking Irish in a half an hour.
Sea means yes and Níl means no.
Get out your focal leabhair and we’ll all have a go.
“Hay lad, do you see this?
A bathroom is a seomra folctha”
    “A what?” “seomrc folctha”
“Will you hold your whist Johnny,
Or you’ll get us all in trouble again”.
If you don’t know the girl that you’re dancing with.
Just ask her her name, Cad is ainm duit?
When you leave her home and she holds you tight.
Oíche mhaith, is how you say good night.
    Chorus
Oh get out your focal leabhair, get out your focal leabhair.
And we’ll have you speaking Irish in a half an hour.
Sea means yes and Níl means no.
Get out your focal leabhair and we’ll all have a go.

Ba mhaith liom an amhran seo. 'Shea is a contraction of Is Hea (it is), ta is normally used as positive. Reminds of the joke about Nil a fhios agam. American tourist is visiting the old country in Co. Kerry. He goes into a church and sees a wedding and asks a local, "Who's getting married?" The old man replies"Nil a fhios agam." The American goes off on his holiday and returns to the same church 3 weeks later and there's a funeral taking place. He asks the same local "Who's getting buried"? The old man replies"Nil a fhios agam". American states"He sure didn't last long". Translation of Nil a fhios agam is I don't know. Local spoke no English. Nil a fhios agam is pronounced Neill a is agum. Sounds like a man's name. The hilarity of language misunderstandings is rife.

There was a small lake on the outskirts of my town called Entiejärvi on official maps. This translates into "Lake Idontknow". The story is a Swedish-speaking cartographer had surveyed the area accompanied by a Finnish-speaking local, whom he interviewed for the names of places. When they passed the little lake the cartographer had asked what the name of it was, and the local had replied "en tie", I don't know.

@@swedbander2709 Urban legend, a variation on the kangaroo myth: Captain Cook sees a kangaroo and asks a local what animal that is. The local replies, "kangaroo", meaning "I don't understand". Of course it's nonsense. "Kangaroo" comes from "gangurru", which is indeed the aboriginal name for it. In the case of Entiejärvi, it seems it was given the name "I don't know" simply because it has not had a name prior. This is the only thing I could find:
      www4.sprakochfolkminnen.se/NAU/bilder/_s1bd001/921315aa.htm
If you click on Entijärvi, you'll see a handwritten note dated 1928. After a description of its location, it simply says "har inte haft något namn av gammalt" - "has no name historically".
