What I just realized is that the green indicator is consistent across devices. There should be an orange led as well for microphone usage.
Actually it is on macs but on the right side of the topbar when mic is in use
The green indicator light is physically wired on the same circuit as the camera. So this means that if the camera is flipped on, then the light will also flip on. No exceptions. However the orange indicator in the menu bar on macOS is, as you know, all software. So there's potential here for this to be hacked so that it is disabled even though your microphone is in fact turned on.@@williamtcastro
@@williamtcastro Yeah, but it would be more consistent, and more noticeable, a bright light in a dark background gets attention quicker. Apple should also make the mic and camera indicators on iphones with dynamic island, remain in the dynamic island, regardless of the state of the island. (if you are playing music and you use the mic, the mic indicator moves to the side.)
Heck, while we’re at it, the location indicator should also be there. Also ALL the indicators should be visible when used.

Fun fact: Its usually not tape that breaks these. Its those metal and adhesive sliders they sell on ebay/amazon that adds just enough thickness to put all the pressure on that point.
The fact that finally convinced me to stop covering the camera is that the green light is physically connected. Camera can’t be triggered without it turning on.
And if someone wonders why ever cover the camera: that is not the fear of Apple spying (😂), but the fear of unofficial/pirated software doing that.
People put tape over their laptop camera's yet never over the selfie cams on their phones. Never got that one.
Yeah; God forbid they tape over their incredibly fragile TrueDepth Camera that could break whenever you so much as nick it, especially if your iPhone doesn't have a case! FaceID? Forget about it!
And don't even get me started on the tape-sizing hassle you'd have to go through to tape over the Dynamic Island for iPhone 14 Pro and higher!

@@AvidSonicFan Not everyone uses an iPhone. And as shown in the video, Macbook displays break due to people taping over the webcam causing an uneven pressure on the screen when the lid is closed, yet people still tape over their Macbook webcam and not their iPhone front cams.
Was simply giving an example of the idiocy of people who tape over their webcams because they're afraid of being spied through it, yet they don't care at all when it comes to phones, tablets and other devices...
Because we actually use the selfie cam on the iPhone 😂 With my MacBook Air M1 I taped it when I got it and never once used the webcam. Also never had problems, but after this video, I'm probably going to take the tape off just to be safe.

I'm surprised I haven't found anybody bring this up yet (not that I would justify taping up webcams)! Some of the biggest counter-arguments people would have for taping up their webcams for "privacy" is because despite Apple telling people they care about their privacy, these people believe Apple (like any other corporation) is lying to them about it, and that they also believe that hackers may activate the webcams without also activating the green active light next to it.
I'm not a pro-privacy conspiracy theorist (anymore), so I can't say specifically what else drives them to do it despite all the physical damage doing this causes...

So, you are telling me, that even a screen protector could crack that screen? Sounds like a bad design then.
It does the same thing. Get in between screen and keyboard, when closed. Laptops are fragile devices and the middle of the screen frame is on of the weakest points. The issue is not the tape. Throwing it in your fancy bag, with barely any protection is.
Think about how it my bump around, while you walk, or what other things in your bag may hit it.

the controversial part is that if you are not out of warranty and does not cover it.
i didn't know this could cause an issue like that for the macbook, i haven't done it to my macbook because of the green light indicator. Dark Mode is the best mode

The thing is, there are ways of turning on the camera without the light turning on. Virus for macos do exist, and I might activate the camera by accident! I get the reason, but tolerances that tight are unnecesary and unrealistic in a laptop. Don't get me wrong, I love macbooks as much as the next guy, but some things are not okay and this is one of many

You do realize, hackers can access your camera without the green light coming on. If I want to see you with your device camera, I’m sure I can find a low flying way to. If hackers can hack major companies like Sony and other major tech companies, they can hack random people.

What about hard cases for macbooks, are they bad?
Short answer, not anymore*, with an asterisk. The origin of this thinking was in 2018, when the retina MacBook Air was first released. Case manufacturers assumed the design was similar in function to Apple’s previous hinge designs, so they made cases which wrapped too far around in the back. I’m not sure the exact mechanics of how it worked, but it was causing screens to crack from pressure being applied from an unanticipated angle. This was quickly remedied by case makers, so by the time the 2019 MacBook Air came around, almost no case on the market would cause this issue anymore. With that said, the asterisk comes in because there is still some argument that cases put extra strain on your Mac’s hinges, because Apple’s engineering is so finely tuned that even the weight of a case is enough to throw the hinge off over time, but in my experience as a repair technician, loose hinges and case users don’t seem to correlate, so I’m willing to say that one is probably a misconception, just very difficult to disprove.

Actually Macbook with Apple Silicon has very good quality camera. There isn't probably better on any PC laptop
The framework has switches to permanently disable ur camera and mic on a hardware level. You don't see that on a macbook
