The beautiful thing about music made in the 1960s was that you could have a seriously raunchy sounding anything but if you hit the tape hard enough it would cut down just enough of the super grating qualities that it then sounded super cool. You really wouldn't want to stand in front of most amps that sounded great on tape back then or to record them today with digital equipment. All of these recreations today are really recreating what the equipment sounded like after it was slammed to tape through a dynamic microphone, not what it actually sounded like directly to the naked ear. False memories are about 99% of what sells nostalgic goods.
@@trahnettilhcs I’d usually assume you’re correct that the algo would at least be loosely based on existing TC spring architecture, but the HOF has an almost famously uninspiring spring sound.
I bought the 45. A week later, the 800 came out. The one I really wanted. But the 45 is nice though. No complaints. But I want one of the high gain ones next.
Honestly I think everyone should redo their demos of this since the firmware update. It sounds way better since they upped the headroom and tweaked a few other things.
Thanks for the info. Found one demo with updated firmware, but still sounds way to shrill to my ears when using higher gain. Was looking for something to replace my Mooer US Classic Deluxe, but seems its a keeper (at least for now 😄).
No doubt. All the reviews are pretty bad. I've used it on a few tracks and it sounds awesome 😎. Sometimes it just comes down to what you have in your signal chain. That being said, don't trade in your real amps just yet😂@@tellstarrsixtwo7120
Looks to be a good deal for bare bones mono unit... The $149.00 price point is about right when stereo units like the Walrus ACS-1 are $399.00 but give you 3 amps a 6 cab sims along with MIDI, room verb, and dual amp output options.
Sounded good to me. It may be just the thing for taking to live jam sessions where I would otherwise be straight into the PA relying just on the mixing desk for tone. I guess you don’t know till you try it live, and even then are hearing yourself in a stage monitor. That said, a guitar amp sounds different 20 foot away compared to right next to you. Decisions decisions…!
The demos I've heard since the firmware update sound way way better. I'm watching all the old ones now from when this came out and I honestly wouldn't buy it from these demos. I just ordered one now.
Well I tried one. Miked my 72 deluxe in another room, plugged in the 65 to the pa, stood in the front of my pa, and tried to tweak the 65. Could not even come close. It was returned the next day. I’m no novice. 55 years playing guitar. Hundreds of hours in a professional recording studio. Owned 100 plus amps, over 109 guitars. I was hoping this would work in a live setting, I’m 69 and play 3 to 5 times a week, getting tired of lugging amps, but alas, not to be.
Thank You, I was wondering the same thing. After gigging and performing for 55+ years at 74 I am doing senior living communities playing mostly all the 50's 60's music I love and the audience loves. Been plugging my guitar directly to a small Mackie ProFX6v3 it has a Hi Z for instrument and my electric sounds ok through my main speakers but definitely not like any of my amps. I thought something like this pedal would do it. Thanks for posting your response save me from having to return one.
Check the uafx dream 65 ...a very cool amp pedal 😉 for a marshall Sound I like the jims45 but I recommend also the lion from uafx ...uafx make some incredible amp pedals and they take pedals very well😊
Well, I'd be curious what he would think of the ua dream. I record with the tc and I go out of the non cab out into a cab simulator, then into my daw. I was recording with a supro all tube amp, this is jus so convenient and with a tube screamer in front of the tc, to me it sounds as good as using my tube amp for recording. Live, I don't think anything can duplicate a tube amp but they sure weigh a ton and for recording I think simulators work well, especially with pedals infront of them etc. I'm at the point where I'll sacrifice a little tone to save my back. 😂
Sorry for the dumb question, I’m a huge noob. But when you say running from the di out into your computer, is it going in through an interface or just somehow right the the computer? Also, is it being directly monitored or are you with a daw? Thanks, great tones!!
I was expected lot of things if this pedal but i feel in the same kind (except for the reverb), the VS Audio Blackbird is a lot way more better, more organic, more real.
I would if I was you. I'm not getting rid of my Tech 21 Blonde for sure. I bought the TC, reverb is amazing but when you start increasing the gain it really sounds shrill and it doesn't sound great with my Fulltone Fulldrive before it. It did sound good with gain at 4 with my Tele', didn't sound quite right with my CS 336. Overall I wouldn't say it was terrible, the reverb sells it but it's nothing special. An American sound with a good reverb pedal would sound better. I'm selling mine soon.
@@neilwarden I'll buy one soon but I hear this kinda comment in many review videos about this pedal. I have the American Sound but none reverb sounds good as the in the Combo Deluxe, but the pedal itself sounds bad at all? Comparing to American Sound, how do you describe? Actually I'm Blues and Classic Rock player, so the idea is the use this pedal through a solid state amp or something like 75w twin reverb to crank a little bit and have a good reverb to drip. In that situation, do you recommend the pedal? Thanks for any kind of info!
I previously posted a review which highlighted the clean overhead and harshness, I recently updated with the latest firmware. GREAT update resolving all problems, I'm hanging on to it now. MAJOR improvement! @@VelhoDelta
@@neilwarden this is a model of the original amplifier from 1965. If you crank that amp is sounds the way it sounds. This product sounds the same way. I would like a proper definition of "sounds too digital", because I simply don't understand what you mean. Sometimes it seems to me that if someone who doesn't like a sound, and knows that the product is a digital one, will simply blame the fact that it's not analog to explain what they don't like? Everything you hear online is digital, CDs are digital...
Back in the early 70's I remember DI'ing guitars through Revox and Akai tape machines and also Neve preamps and have grown accustomed to DI guitar sounds. I'm also big fan of Tech 21 products and swear by the 'Blonde' (or in fact the original Sansamp which are both 100% analog). I have A/B'd the TC and the Tech 21 live in a small band situation and in my ears TC doesn't sound better than the Tech 21. I didnt hang on to the TC it as I have a few other options and comparing sound of my Fulltone Fulldrive through TC in comparison to T21, it was a handsdown thumbs up to T21. I've now decided if I want digital in my chain I'll use an IR loader and put analog pre's/Od's before. I thought the TC and an FRFR might replicate a Fender Tonemaster... it didn't. The Tonemasters are amazing but a little over priced. For the money the TC is OK, reverb is amazing. Just not my thing. @@larsfrederiksen3005
Been waiting for your demo of this Mike Hermans. Best product demos hands down. Thank you sir.

Interesting point
That spring reverb emulation sounds fantastic. Nice and drippy! If they just had that as a stand alone pedal it would be worth the money.
Guaranteed it’s in the hall of fame somewhere, they had to have pulled the algo from their existing stock
@@trahnettilhcs I’d usually assume you’re correct that the algo would at least be loosely based on existing TC spring architecture, but the HOF has an almost famously uninspiring spring sound.
@@trahnettilhcs
It's a IR from the original spring tank and not a algo...so you won't find that one in the HOF.
There's a TC spring reverb pedal called "Drip" from their more affordable line.

Totally different sound compared to the combo 65
This is the first time I actually bought a pedal and then a few days later find that you're doing a demo for it usually it's the other way around :-)

Great minds? We used to do a half-time break in Pipeline! This brought back memories... oh, yeah... pedal sounds great too.
Absolutely the best review of this pedal.
They have nailed that reverb! I think you should open it up and check for a scaled down reverb tank 😉 As always, great demo.

Would this work with roland jc 40 for bit of bite an light drive
