Oh fuck yeah! Been looking forward to you guys playing more Alien!
My favorite RP-group strikes again!
I love how you all make the terrible void of space come alive and am ever so grateful over getting to take part, even as a spectator.
Good luck to you, you lean, mean Marines!
Matt, every video I've seen so far you seem like a very genuine and friendly person. Looking forward to your next videos.
Thank you so much! Hope you enjoy all our videos!
We made a couple errors in the making, so don't @ us (we're always learning!) - the NCOs in the group should have gotten 2 events (one on table A and one on table B) while standard marines get one event. Also the baton rounds (as per page 72) are alternatives to the grenades in the pulse rifle and act as rubber bullets; they're not for the stun baton.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: Since initial publication, Free League made a change with regards to skill allocation. They changed, "Allocate 10 points to your skills. You must allocate at least one skill point each to CLOSE COMBAT, STAMINA, RANGED COMBAT, MOBILITY, and the skills listed by your MOS. MOS skills can start at up to level 4. For non-MOS skills, 3 is the maximum starting level" to: "Allocate 10 points to your skills. You must allocate at least one skill point each to CLOSE COMBAT, STAMINA, RANGED COMBAT, and the skills listed by your MOS. MOS skills can start at up to level 4. For CLOSE COMBAT, STAMINA, and RANGED COMBAT, 3 is the maximum starting level."
They must have changed it again. My copy of CMOM deleted MOBILITY, so the basic skills are CLOSE COMBAT, STAMINA, and RANGED COMBAT. It's on page 54.
I was looking for some info about Alien RPG as a future, beginner Game Mother. Aaand I found this gem. Now I want to watch whole your campaign because this Session 0 gave me a lot of fun (:
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Loving the way this squad is shaping up. Can't wait to see how they tackle their first mission.
Oh, the U1 baton rounds aren't ammo for the stun baton, they great big rubber bullets for the U1 grenade launcher. Page 73 of the CMOM.
Yes indeed, you're right! We commented on that below! Thanks for watching!
@@SlicesnDices oh gosh, I didn't see that. Sorry to double down on you. You guys rock, I loved your playthrough of Destroyer of Worlds and will be running it for my group this Sunday.
@@aceofspades604 Awesome! Good luck!
LOL "I want to drive the tank" 36:40
Yeah, it's M-O-S. I was a tanker, or a 19 Kilo (19K) (there is usually two numbers and a letter- you can see what they are in the Army's recruitment pamphlets and I think the Corps is the same, just a different system). Infantry in the US Army are 11 Bravos (11B). More often than not the word soups is just said as letters- M-O-S, L-D (Line of Departure)(We cross the L-D at 0800) (said Zero Eight Hundred or Oh Eight Hundred- when I was in Zero was in vogue)) and so on.
The Pilot was Ferro.
In Aliens the medic was Dietrich.
In the Army we call Forward Observers FISTs- Fire Support Team with the actual observer called the fire support officer.
Warrant Officers aren't civilians- they are uniformed military. They have an odd rank that is "between" NCO and Officer. They aren't officers, but they aren't enlisted either. WOs are specialists like Physician's Assistants, Pilots, Vets, and stuff like that. They can order around EMs and can be ordered around by Officers. WO's special skills do get them extra perks like more money and so on.
Thank you for your service! And for watching!
Gald to be back with ya'll for another run!
always "Em-Oh-Es"
very informative and entertaining, thank you
Great to see you all again! :)
I thumbs'd the video when he threw something at his flat mate richard. hahaha great shot.
Yeah, the best Alien rpg team are back! 👍
Zmjewski had no buddy. He hated everyone.
also, you missed the chance of calling this episode "CMOM its not a phase"
To be fair so did the women who chest busted when they went into the hive. And the girl survived.cause she went into the small ducts. The women survived that long without that advantage.
Not going to lie, you sound like Keanu Reeves in the intro, haha.
Whoa
wow, just noticed that the IMP (individual marine pack) adds +2 to weight a marine can carry....
Come on, RUclips! You suggest "Session 0" to me after I watched Session 1 and half of Session 2???
RUclips, you FAIL!
You tell that algorythm!
The real military sounds it out. "M-O-S." I've never heard anyone refer to it as a "Mos", or a "Moss," and they would have been ridiculed if they had, lol.
As far as your ranks, a 1st Sergeant is a Company level rank, the highest enlisted rank and assistant to the Company Commander (usually a Captain). You wouldn't normally see one just out on patrol unless the entire Company has deployed. The film Aliens had Apone with an E7 badge (Gunnery Sergeant), which would normally hold a more senior "billet" (role within the Company) too. For example, a "Company Gunny" is usually an administrative position in an operations role, the assistant to the unit's Executive Officer (second highest ranking officer) or in charge of a specific shop in a company like motor transport, communications etc. But maybe is a different role in the Colonial Marines and they serve as Section Leaders.
The movies don't make ranks and billets super clear (Corporal Hicks and Corporal Dietrich are in the four-man 2nd Squad, while Apone doesn't have a Corporal with him in his five-man 1st Squad), and the CMOM definitely doesn't help define them any better. CMOM also seems to have accidentally reversed the Gunnery Sergeant and First Sergeant roles within a Company.
But simplified and more clear than the book's rank table:
-- Company Commander is a Captain. Their senior enlisted assistant is the First Sergeant. The 1st Sgt is basically in charge of making sure discipline and training is performed for the enlisted Marines. He's not "second in command" (that would be the XO), he is just a very experienced non-commissioned officer.
-- Company Executive Officer (XO) is usually a senior 1st lieutenant, sometimes a very junior, recently promoted captain who would be outranked by the Company Commander due to billet and time at the rank. Their senior enlisted assistant is usually a Gunnery Sergeant. Again, he wouldn't be "second in command," he is just a senior enlisted member like the 1st Sergeant is to the company commander. The Company Gunny is usually going to be in charge of logistics and planning for the platoons.
-- Platoon Commander would be a Lieutenant (1st or 2nd), and he has a Platoon Sergeant. This is usually a Staff Sergeant, but could be a Gunnery Sergeant since Apone is clearly either a Section Leader or a Platoon Sergeant. In this case, however, the Platoon Sergeant *would* be the second in command of the platoon as there are no commissioned officers under a platoon commander.
For your game's purposes, you will have a Platoon Commander (Lieutenant), the Platoon Sergeant (Gunnery or Staff Sergeant), a Section Leader (Gunnery or Staff Sergeant, but lower ranking than the Platoon Sergeant) for each Section. You wouldn't see a First Sergeant or Master Sergeant at the platoon level. Everyone else would be a Corporal, LCpl, PFC, or Private. Heck, even their pilot in the film was Corporal Ferro.
It's possible Apone's Section was under-strength because of casualties, and he was standing in for their usual Section Sergeant, since as an E7, he was way too high ranking to be leading a 9-man unit. Though that leave's the question of why Dietrich didn't have a Squad. I'm guessing Apone's rank insignia was either chosen by Al Matthews (who had served in the US Marines), or because Cameron or the costume department liked the way it looked. In the end, there are a lot of inconsistencies in the film, but I would guess much of it is just due to it not mattering to the scope of the film, and them not wanting to have more than 9 actors on set in the Marine parts, lol.
Thank you for your amazing and helpful insights! In the end, as the book dictates, we’re not going for verisimilitude but I’m glad we have three PFCs as that makes things a lot easier to manage. After all, they’re just grunts… no offense ;)
I mean, it's all fairly inconsequential to anyone other than history buffs and former Marines like myself and meaningless in gameplay.
I had actually written up a pretty decent rank table in the AlienRPG subreddit that tried to make sense of the ranks we saw in the movie against the current and historical) Marine Corps. The Marines in the movie were all Privates with a few PFCs, whereas a Marine would only be a Private for the first six months or so of their current era career unless they got in trouble and were busted down. Up until the 60s, the Marines only had 7 ranks instead of 9, so perhaps the Colonial Marines are structured more like that?
I ended up going with a structure that was something of a combo, with a nod to old World War 2 era, and Army ranks. Where there are two Privates (E1 and E2) and PFC was a "short-timer" rank for Marines planning to get out like Hudson, and Lance Corporal being a rank for lifers planning to reenlist and being groomed for promotion to Corporal. Would explain why Apone's group of malcontents were all low ranking Privates. Still no idea why poor Gunny Apone got stuck as a Section Leader though, lol. Or why they called him "Top", a nickname usually reserved for First Sergeants or Master Sergeants. Guessing Cameron just threw in whatever dialog he thought sounded good.
@@veteransergeant2357 Well, we hope we do you and the rest of our men and women in uniform proud! Thank you for your service! Let's rock!
Roll for initiative for rank!
Would be very grateful if you are able to edit out the breaks. Looking forward to more games!
I wish we could! But thank you for watching!
Gunnery SGt is a higher rank then Cpl the Tank Driver would be a Private
Since McCauiliff is a 1st Sgt, would he still outrank Groose being a Gunnery Sergeant?
@@SlicesnDices only just, typically the job of a first sgt is: First sergeants handle the leadership and professional development of their soldiers, especially the non-commissioned officer development and grooming of enlisted soldiers for promotions. They also manage pay issues, supervise administrative issues, recommend and prepare enlisted soldiers for specialty and leadership schools, re-enlistment, career development and they manage the promotable soldiers within the company. First sergeants are the first step in disciplinary actions such as an Article 15 (non-judicial punishment) proceeding. A first sergeant may place a soldier under arrest and on restriction to quarters in certain cases, as well as manage all of the daily responsibilities of running the company/unit. The Gunnery Sgt role is: Gunnery sergeants also serve as senior staff non-commissioned officers in military staff sections and headquarters and service companies and headquarters batteries at battalion/squadron, regiment/group, and division/wing headquarters levels. Typical gunnery sergeant billets in combat support companies and battalion, regiment, and division headquarters are: Personnel Administration Chief, Staff Secretary Personnel/Administration Clerk, Administration Assistance Chief, Division Reproduction NCO, Equal Opportunity Advisor, Human Affairs NCO, Career Planner, Intelligence Chief, Operations Chief, Operations Assistant, Watch Team NCOIC, Schools Coordinator, MAGTF Plans Chief, Cinematography Specialist, Logistics Chief, Embarkation Chief, Infantry Weapons Chief, Analyst and Review Fiscal Chief, Information Systems Maintenance Chief, Public Affairs Chief, Communications-Electronics Maintenance Section Chief, Radio Chief, Wire Chief, Motor Transport Chief, Battery Motor Transport Chief, Roadmaster, Assistant Roadmaster, Maintenance Chief, Assistant Maintenance Chief, Management Team Inspector, Engineer Equipment Chief, and Mess Manager.
In Command Element, Combat Logistics Element, and Aviation Combat Element organizations, gunnery sergeants serve in basically similar positions of responsibility, authority, and accountability as their Ground Combat Element counterparts, with perhaps slightly different titles, such as Division/Branch Chief/NCOIC or Department SNCOIC (Staff Non-Commissioned Officer-In-Charge) in the aircraft maintenance department of a Marine aircraft squadron. Non Fleet Marine Force (or other operating forces) assignments may include supervisory or staff positions in recruiting, drill instructor, Marine Security Guard, Naval ROTC instructor or service school instructor, and major/joint/combined headquarters commands.
@@cockneycpl Amazing. You're the man. I'm calling you in for real world advice with this stuff! Thank you!
@@SlicesnDices cool
Not necessarily. In the Army drivers are E3-E4 with the occasional E5 behind the T-Bar. It's usually the loader who is the junior crewman. But it can also depend on the personnel situation and the requirements of the mission.
Oh gods, I remember seeing "Feild Events" and having flashbacks to MechWarrior 3E and its terrible Life Paths system! So glad this one was handled so much better!
"Let's keep it PG."
Five minutes later, "This Ain't Colonial Marines."
Ow. :)
