As a nature photographer who has always had a desire to shoot video as a compliment to my stills (better to tell the story of a trip to friends/family), this video has helped me. What intimidates me the most, as a photographer, is editing videos. I've taken countless video clips via my drone and even my cameras, but they sit on my hard drive because I am hesitant to dive into editing. Yes, there are countless videos here on YT that explain editing, but I'd love to see something for the photographer and not for someone who is looking to become a videographer.
I'd love for you to do a video series on that, Scott (please). Just enough of an education on basic editing (splicing clips, adding background music, etc.) to get me started. I'm sure I am not the only nature photographer with such a need. Thank you!!
We shall see.
I've been looking for a video primer - and this was it. Perfect, succinct and to the point. Thank you... and if you feel like putting out more video vids, I'll be watching :)
Awesome feedback !
Wow, thank you so much for this. I’ve been a semi pro photographer for the past 5 years but for the life of me I cannot understand how video works even though my cameras are incredibly capable on the video front. This was by far the most understandable video in video I’ve ever seen. Thanks Scott.
Glad it was helpful! And feel free to share the video with others!
Well done video explaining the basic. Easy to understand that made sense. Hope you continue on this topic and discuss processing videos and software.
This is the best I’ve ever seen, very clearly explained. Thanks Scott.
Thanks so much. Not enough people are seeing it. Lol. Share away
@@WildlifeInspired I’ve already shared it to my friends.
Great video, many thanks! I’m a stills person but I dabble in videography occasionally. It’s always a struggle for different reasons - this really helps.
This is just what ive been looking for - thank you! I could find videos on frame rate- and understood that, but hadn't been able to find anything basic enough for ne re the formats, codec and what is/isnt possible with cropping.
Glad it helped!
So helpful, as a Z8 shooter, I am very comfortable with getting the most from the camera shooting stills. Was lost trying to understand enough about initiating the learning process of videography. However, I regularly encounter wildlife video opportunities that I now feel comfortable capturing.
awesome!
Brilliantly explained
This is very helpful to people like me, who aspire to experiment with video capabilities of the modern mirrorless cameras. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video. I'm a keen amateur photographer with no real interest in video but I believe nowadays that knowing the basics of video is an important life skill. If a UFO lands on my roof I don't really think Black and White photographs would be enough.
Great video Scott made a complex process easy to understand .
Glad it helped
Thank you thank you thank you... back in the 80's I originally was in film school in university before realizing a career in commercial cinematography was not what I wanted, and switching to earth sciences. Fast forward to 2018 and buying my first DSLR as I saw photography as a fun hobby for my eventual retirement (fall of 2022). I also planned on getting back to 'film' and doing wildlife videos. But did I ever get a slap in the head when I realized how different film and video are. Back in film days yes I worked with ASA/ISO, but we shot film, super 8 and 16mm, at 18fps for silent and 24 fps with sound (oh the headaches of syncing real to real audio). We also worked on manual focus and editing involved scrapping emulsion off the film pieces to glue them together...well you get the picture. So all this to say I have been lost trying to apply my 80's training to this newish technology. Now your video has rekindled my interest in making videos. Thanks for a well organized, well presented video.
Loved this comment. Good luck on retirement !
@WildlifeInspired I am loving retirement...if I would have known it was this fun I would have retired 30 years ago!!! Haha. Off to Sicily in a few days and going to try video with the new info you provided in your video. Have about 50 bird species I want to photograph over the 7 weeks we are there.
Looking at the other comments, I‘m glad that I‘m not alone. If I dare to say so, my photography is relatively decent. But for the life of me, I‘m not getting any video done that I don‘t want to delete immediately again. Thanks for the video, Scott.
Thanks so much !
Really useful and well explained. I like the practice of going back and summarizing what you talked about. Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful.
Thank you so much!! Just what I needed!!
You're so welcome!
Thanks so much, Scott. This was very helpful to me. - Mick Thompson
Mick. You are the best. !!! Let me know if you have any video ideas that you would like to see
Great video, really explains a lot. Maybe you can do another on panning in a movie and have it flow smoothly with no jitter. Think of the opening scene of the sound of music. Beautiful scene, but it stutters as it pans across the mountains. Thanks.
In fairness. That moose clip stutters a little lol. But its the only low light video that works to have graphics on it.
Wow! Just bloody brilliant that was! I'm a stills shooter and knew barely anything about videography (but was interested) and frankly was a little baffled about the tech. That was the most concise and informative video I have seen on the subject. Thank you so much Scott! I feel like a budding Spielberg now ha ha!
lol love this comment!
Yes, a good introduction Scott. I have been trying to learn videography in my retirement (as a long-time pro Nikon shooter). Two questions for follow-up: 1) Which format is best for beginners to choose that makes sense with compressed video, MPEG-4 or MOV? 2) Which beginner friendly software do you recommend for editing? DaVinci Resolve is feature-rich and FREE, but reminds me of people 20 years ago asking me how to use their bootleg copy of Adobe PhotoShop, LOL.
for non-mac users, Resolve is a good option even for free. I personally started on one called VSDC. Feel free to google for reviews. Know that I know it, I just never switched. I upgraded to a pro version at a reasonable cost. If you are advancing Premier Pro is the way to go, but its a monthly charge that isn't super cheap unless you use it a TON.
Very valuable video for me (I will keep it on a playlist). I am a very amateur photographer with decent knowledge. I have a Z9 and never looked at video because never understood anything about it. Not that I would use it much but would like to experiment. I hope there will be a next step video showing how to set up the parameters in the camera and is there a software needed to see the results? I would probably never go past 4K and never put it on social media, only for my personal pleasure. Thanks for the simple explanations Scott.
I'll look into a follow up video for nikon
I’ve absolutely needed this😂 thanks!
So glad!
@@WildlifeInspired you should do a video on content creation!
I'm the Sargent Schultz of video so this was perfect.
😂
I old enough to remember that referce.
I know nuttttinnnng
Hi Scott, Great video! What video editing program do you use? Would be great to have an episode some guidance on introductory video editing !
Great video Scott. Very informative. I’ll definitely rewatch before trying to take more video. My attempts so far haven’t been that good.
IMO you explained the basics very well. May I add that shooting at a higher frame rate intending to slow it down has implications regarding the audio track.
very good point.... usually when I slow it down I mute the audio and then add the silly social media music.....
Thanks! I would like to try video and I think this will be very helpful. Do you have suggestions for easy-to-use video editors for beginners?
Davinci Resolve or VSDC.... I will be doing a video soon on basic of editing (for any editor)
@@WildlifeInspired Thanks!
Most cameras have their own naming conventions for containers. Is there a good, general reference for what CODECs are contained in Sony/Canon/Nikon format nomenclature? Also, it would be good to note that the same CODEC can have different bit rates, where the smaller bit rates are lower quality. Of course, this is complicated by some CODECs being more efficient than others, so you could have two CODECs at the same bit rate and one would be higher quality than the other.
still images are so much simpler lol
Scott, that is a flower fly 2 wings, not a bee 4 wings. The flies do mimic bees. Dipterans vs Hymenoptera.
Thanks !! I usually label them correctly when I post it at least genus but when I do videos I mess up all the time and call the things wrong. I'm pretty good with birds and sometimes I even mess those up. My mouth just says things lol.
