Like most Taiwanese American children, I was enrolled in Chinese school by my parents to get me to learn Chinese from when I was 5 years old all the way till 14 years old. I hated going there because they made Chinese such a miserable class to take. As a 5 year old, i was not in the mood to go to class on a weekend and do even more homework on top of my homework from my American school. As I grew older, I learned to hate speaking Chinese more and more because of the amount of times a Chinese teacher would make me feel stupid, or the competition to getting the best grades in Chinese school. I was so happy when I convinced my parents to let me quit at 14 years old. It wasn’t until college when I took my first Chinese class in 7 years. In my college Chinese class, my Chinese teacher was so good. She made Chinese fun. She taught the class about Theresa Teng, had us sing songs, perform funny plays, go to Chinatown to eat as a class. This was the first time I had ever had fun learning Chinese, and I am now not so afraid of learning the language anymore. My point is, when it comes to language learning, you need to have fun with it too. There’s so much culture attached to the language like music, TV shows, RUclips videos. If you can have fun with the language, it won’t feel like work or torture. I think that’s the biggest mistake my parents did when I was young. They sent me to places where the teachers would make Chinese learning the worst experience ever. At home, instead of allowing me to play and maybe watch Chinese TV, or read fun Chinese books, they forced me to sit and read the textbook, write vocabulary words over and over until my mind was tired, punished me for not learning faster. But thanks to my college Chinese teacher, I have a new sense of respect for the language and I don’t mind trying to learn it again. To this day, my parents make fun of my American Chinese accent whenever I do try to speak a few phrases. But as I am enjoying watching your videos, I am practicing my Chinese comprehension. Hopefully I can pick up some common vocabulary you’re using and become more fluent with Chinese.
