McMemphis: Chapter 3 - A Yankee in the King's Court

- From the August 21, 1993 USWA program. This is a segment of Jerry Lawler's King's Court segment taped in Boston specifically for the USWA. Vince McMahon is the guest.
Things start fairly straight forward with Lawler doing his WWF heel act and Vince being good guy announcer. But notice what happens around the 3:00 mark. Vince and Lawler switch roles. Vince's delivery changes to subtle heel. Lawler starts to slip into his Memphis voice. Thing go back to the regular WWF characters at the 6:00 mark. I wonder what the Boston crowd made of this. - Развлечения
I love how Vince McMahon always try to portray himself as a Yankee from up north when in reality he grew up in a trailer park in North Carolina
Yeah, quite the opposite, lol. WWE claims to hate southerners, yet some of their biggest draws were southern like Hogan, Taker, Austin, Foley, etc. They had the most southern sounding commentary team during the attitude era in JR and Lawler.
Peeps have no idea how extraordinarily difficult this was to obtain back in the day.
I didn't have to obtain it...just watched it on channel 30 every week...
@@Michael_Chandler_Keatonwhat going on in your mind when you first saw this?
@@zestyclose_village68 I couldn't understand it lol
Vince & King are sooo great together
That's what she said?
This is gold.
Lawler played this masterfully. Vince probably had limited time to do this interview, and knowing he had to portray his heel character to the WWF crowd, then play the tape in Memphis where he was a hero, he made sure to preface why he was a jerk to the crowd, because they were the people "up north" that looked down on the people of Memphis. Even funnier that the live crowd didn't believe hero Bret would have cheated in the Memphis match, but he actually did lol.
Bret being like “Vince made me go down to Memphis to work for SOME GUY and he wouldn’t let me work for my dad”, still all these years later lol cmon Bret (said as a huge Bret fan btw)
This regional angle -- complete with fast food humor, and done at a time when WWF was getting slammed in the media during the ringboy and steroid controversies -- planted the nascent seeds that would lead to McMahon having employees kiss his bare ass on international television.
the birth of mr mcmahon!! I never knew about this back in the day, it’s so cool to be able to see nowadays, when you would have had to be plugged in to the tape trading scene if not in USWA territory back then
I think this was McMahon's dry run as Mr. McMahon a few years after this
Paul Z I would agree. In 1993 he couldn't have been near the super-heel he became in 1998. He was OK but not at the level he was at when feuding with Austin in 1998.
VKM was in no way shape or form nearly as talented as Jerry Lawler.
@@markbowman6655 Vince was both in better shape and stronger than Jerry Lawler.
@@realtalk6195 i don't think anyone would contest that Vince was physically stronger than Lawler.
Lawler at this point had much stronger mic skills - and was an experienced wrestler. Vince cuts an amazing promo, but in no way does his wrestling ability match Lawlers.
Goes back to what Jim Cornette was talking about, a performer can be the most loved face in one area and the most despised heel in another.
I love the bizarro world wrestling dynamics. I wish they could do that kind of stuff today, they technically could but it doesn’t seem like any promotions are really leaning in to it (fuck they could do it in one promotion with CM Punk being hated by the IWC AEW fans but still liked by casuals, smh)
i remember the burger king chants. it reminded me of when people would chant weasel for bobby the brain. classic stuff
Holy Shit EVEN THE WALK IS THE SAME
Cool to make Lawler a heel up north and the baby down south, its a interesting angle if you think about it.
I love how depending on who's company show you are watching this one promo on. Lawler is either a crybaby sorelosing heel who beats up referees, or the little guy mom and pop shop being kicked on and screwed by the corporate machine trying to put him out of work.
You got NO CHANCE
NO CHANCE IN HELL
COME ON COME ON
AND GET IT
Come on
They were booing McMahon even back then!
He didn't scream like a madman the way he used to,he was very calm in this one.
Both versions were very good. One of the greatest Heels ever.
Vince was always built. I can tell he always worked out and stayed buff like Hogan
Steroids, pal
Andrew Dawson Dr. George Zahorian
@@AllieZelda still gotta work out though
@@AllieZelda Steroids don't work like that, goof. You actually need to work out. Otherwise every fat slob would be taking them to magically get in shape.
Jacked n juiced
Awesome upload!
I kinda love how
Wrestling a referee
Is somehow face in Memphis and heel in New York
Really neat part of the story
I suppose context is everything. In New York, where they didn't see that match, he was just a referee doing his job and getting bullied by Lawler. In Memphis, where they had the Andy Kaufman situation and saw the screwjob done on Lawler, it was a hero getting even with a corrupt referee who screwed him over
Everyone knew he ran the company by this point
Vince saying in his mind at 2:06 "that's not a bad reaction, maybe I shouldn't have taken the belt of Bret"
i remember reading about this in PWI
5:26 Lawler can have it his way!!! Lol
i personally like the old vince better than
the vince today..
What a angle that we can get behind both sides.
A rare gem here lol
I grew up on Memphis Wrestling and when Jerry Lawler went to the W.W.E. and took Jeff Jarrett then Brian Christoper it killed Memphis Wrestling.
This must've been when they recorded 2 episodes RAW every other week.
@Chris Terry It was done at a Challenge taping but only aired on the USWA's TV show.
I remember this well was the summer of 93 the good ole days of Memphis wrestling Lawler was good on Memphis wrestling and bad in the wwf and was the same with all other wrestlers from wwf if they were good in wwf were bad when they appeared on Memphis wrestling
Look at Vince's mouth when he says "burger king"
this was the first one right?
This Burger King is gonna give you a whopper! LOL!
12thManInTokyo what the fuck
***** Just another troll wannabe. That's all he is. That guy is just pathetic so don't mind him.
Miss Jennifer Banks he's gone and i can't even remember what he said now but i'm sure it was bad
***** I can tell ya after 40 weeks of silence from whoever that dirt bag is, I don't care.
And that will not be a Happy Meal! Ha!
what yr was this?
Was this actually in Boston? Or somewhere else in mass, because that ain't no garden @ 1:02.
What venue is this is all i'm really asking.
Some people are saying Worcester, but it looks like Lowell to me
The happy meal line
Boston loves a heel
This was in Worcester, MA not Boston
it was taped in Lowell,MA at the Auditorium not Boston!
There's a difference (???)
Michael Cole & Tazz are native New Yorkers, they're the true Yankees.
LOL The Internet was around in 1993.
BTW Bret Hart has come back to Raw, dunno for how long though... just thought you'd like to know. :)
Most regular people didn't have access to the Internet in 1993. There certainly weren't the numerous websites dedicated to inside information on wrestling that exploded during the Monday Night Wars.
ukvol aa
Indeed not, but I do remember reading about it in Pro Wrestling Illustrated so it's surreal to watch years later.
@stockmaster1982 Well of course..Vince was younger and more innovative back in the day.
The Burger King vs the Grapefruits King! Ha.
Just a funny though. What if Lawler complained when Stone Cold won the king of the ring? The attitude era was just so good it would have swallowed memphis up. Different era though just a thought
Was this ever shown on WWF television?
francis1971 no
Hell No
You mean you like young Vince better than old Vince
1993
the king is bankrupt...hahah
Funny how they pass off Lowell, MA as "Boston".
@frank bonini Suburb my ass, Worcester is it's own city. It just happens to be in the greater Boston metro area that spans 3 states.
I second that!!
No chance that’s what you got...
WWE rating is goin down a bit lately
actually its been down since 2005 i think.
Vince should go back to bein acommentator
i think it would be better.WWe is just
gettin old & repetitive these days
they should really do something about it.
Maybe get back Bret Hart(if possible)
get back some wrestlers that will have
ppl watching it again.after losing kurt
angle,booker t,chris benoit,& eddie
guerrero i think wwe is lacking good
wrestling matches ( a lot)i didnt watch in
3-4months already
Burger king 🤴 is the best restaurant.
Aaaaaaaaalllll over the world = Tennessee
The Boston crowd was probably thinking “what the fuck do we care about some match in Tennessee?”
vick mcplockliapoo
ha,ha, duh
Yeah well im guessing Vince wouldn't be cuaght dead at either resteraunt lol
Vince legitimately hates southern people or at least views them with disdain
He didn’t really get to show that in the Austin feud
heel king = legend! face king =shit! MAKE KING HEEL AGAIN!
Jerry lawler really sucked
Lol. No
Shut up he is a fantastic heel
Jerry Lawler is one of the all time greats of pro wrestling. One of the greatest heels of all time. Definitely earned his Hall Of Fame ring. Heavyweight championship reigns in several territories and was treated in pretty much the same manner in WWE as The American Dream Dusty Rhodes when it comes to winning titles..... it just didn’t happen. Dusty was another case of a guy with great talent who’d won Heavyweight championship titles elsewhere but couldn’t get anything out of Vince McMahon. If you weren’t a creation of Vince McMahons own doing.... then his petty mindedness means you have No Chance In Hell Of ever being of any great value in WWE.
