RETAL.EXE We remember... I spent hours listening to 3 variations of this epic music theme in the game in my childhood. Why is it so difficult to find anything similar epic nowadays?
RETAL.EXE 😆 great memory!! This was the first PC game I ever played on a borrowed black and white laptop when I was 13. I later deleted all the files in the root c: and my friend had to come over with a system floppy and rescue me. Lesson learned. And it kick-started an entire career in computing.
My theory: it was mindblowing back in the day, coming from 2D graphics and "beep" sound on the PC. I still remember a friend's dropped jaw when I showed him Wing Commander for the first time (he ad a monochrome 8088 back then). When he upgraded to a 486 I asked him to record the intro music of Strike Commander on a cassette. The game would not run on my 386SX, and the soundtrack alone gave me goosebumps. There were still so many concepts that were new and exciting and not just last year's game with better graphics. The first of it's kind sticks in my mind and technically I have to admit, that a lot of the modern successors are "better" in any quantifiable way but especially the soundtrack evokes the memories. Maybe more than actually playing it on a comparatively big screen just to find out how small the map is and that the "absolutely realistic" graphics were mainly that realistic because of the shaders in out minds. Amazing how much the devs back then managed to pack into two 5,25" floppies (I still have them :) ). Fun times.
@@nolenyg Sorry - I didn't see your reply until now. No - we weren't really rich. My dad would play on his work-laptop, while i would play on our PC. But it was a ton of fun.
I had a laptop. None of my friends did, so I travelled to their houses and with a serial link cable we could play F29, Doom, Duke Nukem, Heroes Of Might And Magic, Diablo 1, Warcraft, Comanche. Being in the same game with someone else was mindblowing.
Oh the memories are flooding back! Played the hell out of this during my golden DOS years of 92-97 and beyond. I had a copy of the game, so no manual and it took me ages to find out how to land. And to find out just what the hell all the missions required me to do. I'd fly around destroying everything in sight until I ran out of ammo and still didn't know what it was I needed to do. My favorite was destroying the train with the cannon before it could reach safety.
In a local PC games magazine, I saw all missions described in detail. I was like, "wait, there ARE missions in that?". (already played it countless hours before)
First decent multiplayer (2 Player) game I played over a phone line at 14.4k ! - And it worked fantastically, It was also cross platform as I was playing it on an Amiga and my friend was on the PC version....Amazing!
Omfg you could play Retal in MP? Goddammit. Back then we played Doom, Heretic, Descent, Microprose Grand Prix, Scorched Earth, Rise of Triad, Duke Nukem, Big Red Racing, first Need for Speed, but we didn't know that you could play Retaliator that way... That would have been awesome!

This instantly evokes so many amazing, vivid memories! I used to be a Commodore 64 gamer and it was one of the first games I recieved for my new 286 "IBM" PC clone (by Fujitsu) with 1 MB of RAM. This was billed as one of the best showcases of the power of PCs, but I couldn't get it to run. We were in a backwater town of a 3rd-world country at the time. Thanks for upload, I used to play this game, maybe 1995, and I rocked. Could take-off and make a loop and then land again. Also, the map worked like you could fly 180 degree and go "around" the map and come back from the north. Truly epic game. Lots of feeling.

How do you get the MT-32 to work with this game? I've been trying to get it to work on real hardware for quite a while now with absolutely no luck. Alternatively, how do you set up DOSBox to playback the MT-32? Maybe that will give me some insight into getting this to work on my real machine...

Is this with Roland MT-32?
Killer soundtrack
nice game - nice music
Кароче я дальше 1 миссии не играл, ибо не знал как и когда садить самолет))) было мне 11 лет. В 1994.
I used to play this for hours with my brother on our 286 PCs linked up over a null modem cable. Graphics are a joke by today's standards but was a lot of fun to play.
How do you get the MT-32 to work with this game? I've been trying to get it to work on real hardware for quite a while now with absolutely no luck.
Alternatively, how do you set up DOSBox to playback the MT-32? Maybe that will give me some insight into getting this to work on my real machine...
I dont know but mine works. Here's the my version of the game i only get MT-32. You can try it, link here - www.4shared.com/s/fH3VS10xViq

Could anyone recommend something similar, but more modern? Not too much realism, but with takeoff and landing? Totally love this game tho!
Strike Commander!
Also TFX.
