    RETAL.EXE We remember...
    I spent hours listening to 3 variations of this epic music theme in the game in my childhood. Why is it so difficult to find anything similar epic nowadays?

      RETAL.EXE 😆 great memory!! This was the first PC game I ever played on a borrowed black and white laptop when I was 13. I later deleted all the files in the root c: and my friend had to come over with a system floppy and rescue me. Lesson learned. And it kick-started an entire career in computing.

    • @TreibAir
      @TreibAir 2 года назад +6

      My theory: it was mindblowing back in the day, coming from 2D graphics and "beep" sound on the PC. I still remember a friend's dropped jaw when I showed him Wing Commander for the first time (he ad a monochrome 8088 back then). When he upgraded to a 486 I asked him to record the intro music of Strike Commander on a cassette. The game would not run on my 386SX, and the soundtrack alone gave me goosebumps. There were still so many concepts that were new and exciting and not just last year's game with better graphics. The first of it's kind sticks in my mind and technically I have to admit, that a lot of the modern successors are "better" in any quantifiable way but especially the soundtrack evokes the memories. Maybe more than actually playing it on a comparatively big screen just to find out how small the map is and that the "absolutely realistic" graphics were mainly that realistic because of the shaders in out minds. Amazing how much the devs back then managed to pack into two 5,25" floppies (I still have them :) ). Fun times.

    Oh the memories are flooding back! Played the hell out of this during my golden DOS years of 92-97 and beyond. I had a copy of the game, so no manual and it took me ages to find out how to land. And to find out just what the hell all the missions required me to do. I'd fly around destroying everything in sight until I ran out of ammo and still didn't know what it was I needed to do. My favorite was destroying the train with the cannon before it could reach safety.

    Игра нашей молодости. Сперва играли вдвоём, потому что было трудно управлять самолетом одному. Потом научился управлять один. Со временем смог сажать самолет поперёк взлётной полосы. Еще был высший пилотаж это когда взлетел и не покидая территории взлётной полосы делаешь мертаую петлю и садишься обратно, то есть все делается на минимальных скоростях и минимальном пространстве. Было прикольно.

      Брат в 89-м купил паленый 286-й на черном рынке и починил. Батарейки биоса не было. Приходилось все вводить при каждой презагрузке, и я по сей день все цифры помню наизусть. Из игр была эта, и в те времена реалистичнее ни чего не было. 2 года мне ушло на то, чтобы догадаться как сажать первый самолет. А потом как пошло поехало. Догадались с другом как 2 компа в сеть подключить и в этой игре была поддержка. Можно было по согласованности, только пушкой пользоваться, чтобы не моментально друг друга стингерами. Потом так же играли в Команци 3 годы спустя. С самонаводящимеся ракетами, первый кто видит, тот и выигрывает. Не интересно. А если слепой пушкой без наводки, тогда носом нужно рулить, и вроде как можно хоть на минуту раунд растянуть.
      Эта игра и Wolfenstein - легенды.

    This instantly evokes so many amazing, vivid memories!
    I used to be a Commodore 64 gamer and it was one of the first games I recieved for my new 286 "IBM" PC clone (by Fujitsu) with 1 MB of RAM. This was billed as one of the best showcases of the power of PCs, but I couldn't get it to run.
    We were in a backwater town of a 3rd-world country at the time. My dear uncle's friend, now sadly passed, was the only "tech support" we knew (in fact, he was the one who convinced my folks to get me a PC instead of the Amiga that I foolishly wanted.) His name was Menzour and he set aside an entire afternoon to help us install this game. It took several hours and my retarded friend got bored but I still remember the excitement when the Ocean logo finally came up and that music started playing! This game was too complicated for me though but I often played it anyway. Thanks Uncle Menzour!
    And thanks Mr. Thriftweeds for uploading this minus annoying commentary!!

      Dunno, I've played it via RS232. But it wasn't much fun. It was "1 shot multiplayer".Netwars, Descent and Terminal Velocity were far more entertaining.

      Seems to autodetect since there's no config program. DosBOX is said to only support it in SVN builds AFTER the last 0.74 official release from years ago though...

    We were never able to land this plane in many years. No matter how hard we try. I think maybe because we didn't have game code, that's why maybe we couldn't land this thing.

    • @fisk0
      @fisk0 6 лет назад +1

      The game is kinda quirky, you can't mount the game's install folder directly into DosBox, you have to mount a folder above it and make sure the name of the game folder becomes C:\RETAL when mounted, otherwise it won't start. You also have to have some specific CPU cycle settings in order to get audio working, but at the moment I can't recall what those were.

    I hope somebody can help me with the name of a game I played in early 2000. It was like this F29 Retaliator but you had missions like to destroy enemy's bases or soldier. you had different kind of weapons like missiles, napalms even a nuclear bomb

    I used to play this for hours with my brother on our 286 PCs linked up over a null modem cable. Graphics are a joke by today's standards but was a lot of fun to play.

    How do you get the MT-32 to work with this game? I've been trying to get it to work on real hardware for quite a while now with absolutely no luck.
    Alternatively, how do you set up DOSBox to playback the MT-32? Maybe that will give me some insight into getting this to work on my real machine...
