I hadn't sobbed so hard in a long time. The sheer, simple beauty of an alienated son remembering the life-breathing beauty of his mother's love, and how that love then provided the power and courage to sacrifice himself for a greater cause ... simply beautiful.
My girlfriend cried watching this. Whole season 2 she hated billys guts, wishing he died. Whole season 3 she was so afraid and scared of him, I had to watch out for billy in the evening. But during this scene, she cried. Genuinely. Made me realize how good season 3 actually was.
I don’t think billy ever would have ever forgiven himself for the things he did. His character did the last thing he could to make right his wrongs. A beautiful last act of selflessness.
Ok ok when i saw this scene it literally jerked and forced tears out of meh eyeballz to just Max’s reaction tho poor billy he never meant to be mean he just had a rough life :(
I’ve thought about Billy’s death and I think it has a lot of symbolism towards the relationship he had with his father. His father always controlled him just like the mindflayer and when he was young he couldn’t defend his mom from his abusive father. So in a lot of ways this was his opportunity to defend somebody good like his mother. Especially because Eleven gave billy memories of his mother he might not have had anymore. Billy stood up to the mindflayer like he never could his dad before and I think it’s great. I wonder if the Duffer brothers meant to write it like that or if I’m reaching a bit ? 😀 PS: There is a scene in season 2 when Billy is fighting Steve and he says “Nobody tells me what to do!”. Which supports my theory even more, he didn’t want anyone or anything telling him what to do. Including his father OR the mindflayer. 😂
@@hoopz66 It wasn't just physical abuse, it was mental as well. Billy was so scared of his dad that by the time he was strong enough to defend himself, he was too scared to actually use his strength against him.
@@0kk812 that's one way to look at it, but Billy was a jerk because his dad was abusive. I'm not saying that justfiys his actions in season 2, but throughout season 3,we could see Billy didnt like what the mind flayer was making him do, like when the tear rolled down his face in episode 6. And its sad that he died for three reasons. 1, I'm sure he would have changed after that whole experience, 2, he died saving Eleven, and 3, we got to see he wasn't truly a douche in his final moments. So yeah, sure he didnt have this huge character arc, but I think its different than just " a punk being killed."
I'm so glad they had a Billy cameo in season 4. Hands down my most relatable and favorite character. Wish he could've stuck around. Character development would've been out of this world.
Billy Started off as an asshole, Ended as a hero. Hopper Started off as just a single ordinary sheriff, Edit: he's alive apparently, jeez. I want to replace this with Bob the stepdad. Perfection.
I'm probably not the only one, but I was not expecting Billy to end up saving Eleven and her friends in the end. Despite how badly he'd treated everyone prior to this and becoming an abuser like his father, there was still some good left in him and he ended up redeeming himself.
Billy was by far my favorite character in the end of season 3. He was such a tragic character. Him and his mother were abused by his father and his mother wasnt in the picture anymore. All he wanted was to be loved and understood.
It doesn’t show, but as Billy’s dying and Max quickly runs towards him, he says he’s sorry before he eventually dies. What I think is unique about his last words, however, is the obvious and underlying apology hidden within it. His apology shows his regret over what he had done over the course of the season as well as how he treated Max and the other kids in the past. His whole character which was made familiar had changed in those final moments of his passing. Billy was introduced as a cocky, bossy, flashy, womanizing douchebag throughout season 2 and it had seemed like his character would just continue to remain that way. Then comes season 3 which showcases Billy for what he actually is: a boy who never felt any fatherly affection who also lost his mother who abandoned him. Witnessing the backstory and the inner vulnerability of Billy is what makes truly makes his character stand out from the cliche jerk in movies and shows. His sacrifice to save Eleven and share his last moments with his little sister is what makes Billy’s character arc complete. He went from being a arrogant teen from California to becoming the host and tool of the Mind Flayer, leading multiple people to also become mindless killers, to finally overcoming the monster that possessed him and become the unlikely savior of Eleven. He died knowing his final action was heroic and one he did on his own free will. RIP Billy.
I really really wanted him and Max's last moments together to be more loving though. Until his sacrifice, their last interaction was him backhanding her into a wall. Like maybe once he breaks free from the Mindflayer, he looks back to her and says the "I'm sorry" then. In a comforting but reassuring way that let's her really know he wasn't a monster. His whole arc this season was cold and brutal and I just wish his last moments with her weren't.
Dude I’d grow up wishing I could have a death that meaningful and badass. Dude threw hands with a inter-dimensional god and lasted more than a second. If Valhalla was a real place, that dude would be laying warrior babes like crazy.
I think that’s the case bc otherwise it’s pointless to show billy looking at his double and plus they didn’t show him coming out of the upside down I’m p sure so

Just the moment Billy gets his mind back he takes one look at the mind flare and eleven and he knows exactly what’s going on and what he needs to do. The acting is just amazing.
The shot at 1:30 is spectacular. In the background, you see the mall lights flickering at a constant rate, and fire burning after the kids threw the fireworks. All while the spider monster has impaled Billy with its mouth arms(?). It also shows how much larger the spider monster is in this situation than we previously saw. Probably my favorite shot in the whole season.
(Spoilers for Season 4) The way Billy looks from behind also gives me huge Vecna vibes. Maybe The Mind Flayer is gonna betray his own creator in Season 5? IDK.
But then again if they would’ve done that it would’ve beat Steve redemption arc because to me billy this season stole the show Like the emotional the trauma him trying to warn the kids that he’s not in his right state of mind him trying to protect mrs wheeler him saving el him saying sorry to max Beautiful arc

We all know Billy and Max were never really close but deep down they all really cared for each other. My heart shattered when she screamed Billy's name this goes to show you only appreciate stuff when it's gone.
Morg 1330 right I believe he was taken bc if you remember correctly even if you get exploded by the machine your pile of flesh remains and there was no sign of flesh or blood I think he tried to escape and ended running into the Russians on the way out. Then was taken back bc they wouldn’t have put that end sene just to show us a one of the dogs was alive I think the America was hopper
Billy’s such a tragic character. Saw his mom abused by his father and Billy became the very thing he hated (his father). When Eleven reminded him of who he truly was, a protector, he instantly changed. Beautiful writing. Rip Billy
I think Hopper is alive for the following reasons: • End credit scene • Joyce closes her eyes so she never actually sees Hopper getting killed • 2:18 this awfully long black screen • 2:21 where is Hopper before the machine blew up • Eleven loses her ability to find people so she won't know that Hopper is alive Hopefully the writers bring him back because that ending did NOT do justice to Hopper's character. :/
There’s only 2 good evidence there, but I have a counter for those 2. • The end credits could be someone else, they never showed Murray after the time jump. So could the American be Murray aswell?! • Budget reasons, with all the cgi affect I’m pretty sure it’ll be difficult programming his death. It’s either that, or it’s too brutal since he’s in the closest radius of the explosion and kept it at a perfect age restriction 👌
@@yikesyikespr.9055 Doubt it's Murray but I saw people talking about it's Dr. Brenner(? believe that's how you spell his name) somehow. I think them not showing the death was still pretty... Odd. They showed the gruesome death of that Terminator Russian guy but not Hopper's? They usually show (no matter how horrid, as seen with Billy) every character death or at least their bodies. Bob, Billy, Will's fake, Barb's, Alexei... Not showing his or the remains of it is pretty odd, yeah? Also, I kinda think Eleven conveniently losing her powers is a good point. If she had them then she would have searched for him without question if she was told there was no body. Now she can't because they're just gone. Either him jumping into the Upside Down or being held by Russians seems pretty likely (more so the Upside Down part, gives 'em more of a reason to bring that back).
lupinearsenalALT he is basically next to a huge ass generator looking thing if that evaporated the scientist most likely it would have obliterated him since he was the closest one but i will not be shocked if theres fucking plot armor if he is alive
@@yikesyikespr.9055 Your second reason doesn't make sense at all, it is simply that they must have forgotten that hopper was near the machine in that shoot, because more important was that the blast stopped
The complexities in this scene alone is insanely deep. Billy was a buff dude and very intimidating, but the only person he feared was his father, and so all that anger he has, it feels like he can only take it out on the people he thinks “weaker” than him (max, Steve, Lucas, etc…). His only form of control is when he’s the aggressor on someone else smaller than him, as being abused by his dad are his only moments when he doesn’t feel in control. So in this scene, when he decides to stare a giant monster in the face and stop it from killing El, he’s taking back his control in those last few seconds and using his strength for good instead of destruction. You see a persons true colors in their final moments, and underneath all the pain and hate, you see that he was never truly evil. Just a product of tragedy and abuse.
I don't think this is breaking from Billy's character. When things are threatening, he fights back. He fought back. That's the benefit of being an aggressive, violent person: when there's a threat in sight, the person will attack as his defense.
Someone finally shows him love/compassion since his mom left and when his dad used to abuse him he was much smaller than his dad just like how now he's much smaller than the mind flayer but he has so much anger towards his dad and love for his mom his true nature is finally revealed and redeemed himself. This scene got me teary eyed. Also the actor that played him did a phenomenal job.
What gets me the most is how much progress his character made in just a moment and i legit cried because of this scene

fr his scream is godly
BRO IT DOES EVERYTIME
Billy’s scream was powerful, he stood up to something stronger than him and his own father
Good on you Billy, RIP
I’ve thought about Billy’s death and I think it has a lot of symbolism towards the relationship he had with his father. His father always controlled him just like the mindflayer and when he was young he couldn’t defend his mom from his abusive father. So in a lot of ways this was his opportunity to defend somebody good like his mother. Especially because Eleven gave billy memories of his mother he might not have had anymore.
Billy stood up to the mindflayer like he never could his dad before and I think it’s great. I wonder if the Duffer brothers meant to write it like that or if I’m reaching a bit ? 😀
PS: There is a scene in season 2 when Billy is fighting Steve and he says “Nobody tells me what to do!”. Which supports my theory even more, he didn’t want anyone or anything telling him what to do. Including his father OR the mindflayer. 😂
Billy is stronger then his dad even without being flayed. Idk why he didn’t try defending himself
@@hoopz66 It wasn't just physical abuse, it was mental as well. Billy was so scared of his dad that by the time he was strong enough to defend himself, he was too scared to actually use his strength against him.

@Draifu fair enough but still it wasn't even sad just a punk getting killed

No clue where such an eccentric response would have come from. Lol
That’s the sad part
Billy’s sacrifice will never be forgotten
RIP Billy.
He's like the Tony stark of stranger things
I really really wanted him and Max's last moments together to be more loving though. Until his sacrifice, their last interaction was him backhanding her into a wall.
Like maybe once he breaks free from the Mindflayer, he looks back to her and says the "I'm sorry" then. In a comforting but reassuring way that let's her really know he wasn't a monster.
His whole arc this season was cold and brutal and I just wish his last moments with her weren't.

Billy’s such a tragic character. Saw his mom abused by his father and Billy became the very thing he hated (his father). When Eleven reminded him of who he truly was, a protector, he instantly changed. Beautiful writing. Rip Billy
I think Hopper is alive for the following reasons:
• End credit scene
• Joyce closes her eyes so she never actually sees Hopper getting killed
• 2:18 this awfully long black screen
• 2:21 where is Hopper before the machine blew up
• Eleven loses her ability to find people so she won't know that Hopper is alive
Hopefully the writers bring him back because that ending did NOT do justice to Hopper's character.

It is "draw a charge"
@@wrs3004 same difference 🤷🏼♀️
@@wrs3004 still hurt my feeling regardless 😂
Good Analysis 😊
I like how this is labeled “billys sacrifice” not just death. He was my fav in season three
Billy standing up to the mind flayer in the beginning ready to protect eleven at all costs is so badass
