Madame Web is, for better or worse, one of the most talked about movies of 2024. And one thing people can't stop talking about is Madame Web's bizarre use of ADR or Automatic Dialogue Replacement. I want to look at that a little deeper. Figure out what was changed, why, and try to piece together the original story.

Show of hands, who actually watched Madame Web?
It's a shame you're not going to do any more movie rewrites because that's it that's why i am subscribe to this channel
New meaning to hands down.
Those ADR's didn't just ruin the already horrid lines and audio, they also ruined some scene shots because they had to either do extreme close up or distort the characters' faces with VFX to mask the fact that they changed the lines.
Unfortunately 😕
Respect for calling out cows milk as an unhealthy drink for cats. (it's also ineffective and not more healthy than just water for human adults)
A movie where the superheroes don’t even get into their costume because they’re saving it for a future movie is such a level of hubris
didn't they also reused a small scene from Sam Raimi's Spiderman at the end of the Madame Webb too?
The movie's called "Madam Web" _not_ "Madam Web and the Three Spider-People". For the character of Madam Web herself, this is a pretty standard super-hero origin story structure (where they usually don't appear in their final costume until late).
But broadly agreed, someone at Sony clearly thought "new franchise" rather than the more sensible (especially with their record) "Let's get the first one right then see what happens".

In interviews, it seems clear Dakota Johnson thought she had signed onto the MCU. Then she got a film that outdid Catwoman on bonkers batshit badness.
Perhaps it's not as dumb as it sounds if Tom Holland was originally going to cameo.
At that point her agent failed her and there was likely some obfuscation on Sony's part?
Who even knows, though
@@caffetiel She fired her agent after this and went with another agency
@@caffetiel Remember when the director of Morbius got mad because Sony just randomly put graffiti of Tobey Macguire's Spider-Man in the trailer without telling him? This is definitely Sony's doing.

If Tom Holland was in fact supposed to cameo in this movie at one point, it suddenly makes a lot more sense why Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney both thought they were joining the MCU

My favorite bit of nonsense in the movie is when the guy on the radio says that toxic by Britney Spears is definitely going to blow up, even though the movie is set in 2003 and the song didn’t come out until 2004. Incredible

@@NandovMovies this makes sense. I noticed he was still talking off screen. There's also concept art of everyone on that subway being handed a PSP. I guess they had to cut that plot point for time though
The _line read_ on "I agreed to provide security for you because I thought you were close to finding the spider" is abysmal, it sounds like the actor was picking something out of his teeth mid-sentence
I honestly think that's like 3 different clips spliced together. I have no idea why they would do that but it sounds so weird, I feel like I can hear the cuts in between words.
I think it might be that the actor has a pretty thick mumbling French accent that maybe they wanted him to tone down in ADR but he couldn't keep it consistent (perhaps he recorded it remotely when in Europe for filming Napoleon and there wasn't an ADR director working with him at the time?) so they had to really mix and match his takes, happened with the actress for Ada Wong in Resident Evil Retribution and Paz de la Huerta in Nurse 3D who had such thick accents they actually had different actresses ADR all their lines in both movies
It sounded like a different person
😂
AI will solve the ADR vs Lip Sync issue, or even the whole human actors issue. There a are too many human errors invoveld in every movie.

There's only one other cinema related job that would be worse than pouring over Madam Web, being the editors having to make it "theater ready".
Hey Nando I just wanted to let you know that when Madam Web started production, the rumoured plot (from many sources) was that it was going to be a Terminator esque time travel movie where Ezekiel goes back in time to prevent Peter Parker from being born because Spiderman kills him, and Madam Web has to stop him from doing that. Then when the reshoots were happening, sources came out and said that spider-man had been completely removed from the film and all references to him had been cut. So if these rumors are to be believed, then your theory has pretty much got it right on the money.
I just know all this stuff because following movie productions is pretty interesting to me and if you want me to provide sources then i would happily oblige it would just take a bit of time.
If I remember correctly the rumors of the plot change happened after the success of No Way Home which never made sense to me. It was around the same time that the rumors of Andrew Garfield getting another shot at Spider-Man were coming out

fun nitpicks (not unlike Nando's podcast, Mostly Nitpicking) you missed if you hadn't heard the Madame Web pod:
1) Mattie mentions an "uncle" who works in "media". well obviously she's J. Jonah Jameson's niece and her being attacked by a spider-person is why Jameson has a burning hatred for spider-man.
2) The Peruvian spider tribesmen had to somehow bring baby Cassandra Webb all the way to the US and get her documented as a US citizen in the foster care system. Would have like to see that movie.
There was a whole team of people in the Amazon with her mom while she was researching spiders before she died, Sims only killed a few onscreen.
Mattie mentions Jonah by name during the taxi ride to the woods.
ah I assumed the tribes people just cared for her until people came looking for the researchers and then she was taken back
This and other video essays on this channel make me wish studios would just release a hundred hours of unedited footage so fans could re-edit as they wish. I would love to see the Nando cut of lots of movies.
They shipped her back to the US using Amazon Prime. (Credit to Ryan George on that one.)
From what I gather, the attempt in this video to piece together the original plot misses one important thing: the three spider girls weren’t originally in the film. It was only supposed to be Madame Web, uncle Ben and Mary pregnant with Peter. Ezekiel would only be interested in preventing the birth of Spider-Man, so he wouldn’t be killed by him later. That’s also why the whole “take a trip to learn to be in three places at once” plot seems so weird. Without the three girls in the movie, she wouldn’t need that move. And I bet the post credit scene would be the spider living in New York until Peter grew up and then got bitten by it.
I agree, I think the three girls are completely unnecessary. This could be a movie centered only on newborn spider-man and madame webb.
"GET ME DIALOGUE ABOUT SPIDER MAN!" JJ Jameson.
That first ADR from the clip sounded like two different ADR readings that were spliced together. That's some next level bad ADR. I'm only a minute and ten seconds into this video, and I'm already having to brace myself for a descent into ADR madness.

All the ADR was added to make Ezekiel sound more like a villain. When, the script seems to just paint hom morally ambiguous. Like there was a bigger villain then him, but was cut earlier in the process.
Or just that he was originally a more relatable "villain", which is very much the MCU playbook, so that tracks with his thesis that this may have started out much more MCU integrated.

Betting a million dollars it will open with scientists in the jungle no matter what. Why do they keep ripping off the first suicide squad's opening? who knows, I hope they keep doing it for literally every movie going forward though.
This is the kind of unhinged analysis I can get behind
Here's my theory about the Casino concept art: Ezekiel is a bodyguard in Peru, but later in the film has access to vast wealth and extremely high-tech surveillance equipment... He is in security. The visions, reflexes, and other spider powers from the Magic Spider make him the perfect bodyguard. Who spends big on security? Casinos. Ezekiel becomes a security guru through the casino world. Who might he worry about if his secret is exposed? Casino bosses, maybe? If he gets "ruined" or "destroyed", he might have originally been afraid of some of his high-rolling clients or former clients coming after him. (Since this is Spiderman, maybe Kingpin or even Kraven.) It ties everything together. How his Spider powers made him money, why he would evolve to know about security technology, why he might have his hands in illegal dealings, how he knew about the NSA woman and her surveillance tech... and why he might have been worried about someone "destroying everything he's built" and someone other than the girls coming after him.
The thing that nobody seems to talk about is when that her friend/coworker dies in the ambulance crash, the truck that hit them is driving directly intothe river. In addition to that, the ambulance was driving straight where there is no road. You get two different angles that show this. Also that truck was not going nearly as fast as it seems.
I thought for sure that this version of Ezekiel was actually going to be Morlun, a character who hunts Spider-Totems and consumes their energy like a vampire.
It would make more sense but he's supposed to be a bigger threat
@@sailordaigurren8225 Morlun could've been in this movie to set up a Spider-Geddon movie that brought the live-action Spider-Men together with the Spider-Verse characters, but Sony was like "Nah".

If Nando pretty correctly pieced together what the original version of Madam Web was supposed to be, it sounds... not really that bad?
I certainly would've picked it up on digital to watch.
They really would have benefitted from leaning into Kaine's comedic side (as in the Texas comics) in the theoretical Kaine Does Vegas scene and throughout. In some other universe, that's a scene as iconic as the Raimi Spiderman 1 new powers montage, and so is Madam's repeated use of cars to flatten Kaine.

Why is the tribe called "Las Arañas" if the language spoken in Brazil, where the Amazon Rainforest is located, is Portuguese, not Spanish??? That's like trying to say French and Italian are the same language!!!
The Amazon rainforest spreads across multiple countries. The movie only ever mentions Peru, which is one of those countries. Spanish is spoken in Peru.
One of the funniest details in the movie is when Cassie first goes to the diner (by foot), Ezekiel shows up after her and kills the four of them. When she flashes back and tries to get there faster (using a car) she shows up after him. Was she waiting for him specifically so she could hit him with the car?
In fairness, she cuts through the woods on foot. It's _entirely_ possible the road goes the long way round so that just walking through some trees is much quicker.
(but yeah, if walking's quicker why then take the car ? I guess the generous interpretation is, she saw everyone get killed when on foot and thought "But if I hit him with the car...")

I'd like to point out that at 3:38 you can see Google recommending Venom 3: The Last Dance, a movie that is now out yet. Because of that, Sony hasn't released an official poster of it yet, so Google chose a fan-made poster that shows Bully Maguire from Spider-Man 3 with the text "Venom 3" in the most basic, boring font ever. I haven't seen Madame Web yet, but I think I'd get more enjoyment out of looking at Google's Venom 3 for an hour and 56 minutes poster than spending that same amount of time watching Madame Web.

I’m not normally into superhero / comic book stuff, but your deconstruction of Madam Webs ADR was genuinely such a treat to watch. I hope you know you’ve got something really special with this channel.
The thing that really struck me about this movie is that all the characters behave and talk like they were written by ChatGPT. Why do the girls dance on the table? They're not strippers, they're not portrayed as boy-crazy, and they were JUST talking about keeping a low profile so they don't get murdered. It's not even one of those dumb "because the movie needs it to happen" plot points, because some guy recognizes them anyway. And that's just one example. The movie is FULL of moments like this. Nobody who wrote this has ever interacted with a human.
I still think your rewrites were your best works, and this might be the best since you stopped doing those. Thought provoking and insightful, I respect the amount of work you put into gathering all the data!
This is the best piece of investigative journalism I've come across in years. Thank you for your service. Pulitzer impending.
I hope highly suspect this movie was actually a Sony experiment to see if they could get away with writing a movie with AI.

The sequel to the Artemis Fowl video I've been waiting years for
Wow de-aging a computer generated image of someone based on someone's description from a dream they had, has AI gone too far?
in 2003 ai was too advanced so they had to nerf it so now it tells you to eat glue
Is so funny how these new movie writers say they don’t use comic book when writing for a hero movie but clearly you find out that all the do is change characters and plots with a different character from a different comic book so they can seem unique
And then they proceed to ruin the whole story they "stole" from because they just miss the point. lol
Andrew says he stopped pulling his punches in No Way Home. Maybe the Spidey inclusion originally tied into that?
Before this movie came out I had a theory that it was gonna go multiversal at the end.
Specifically I thought Madame Web would uncover her real power and gain the ability to connect to other universes somehow and we'd reveal that the 3 girls are all "Spiderman" in other universes and the real ones come to this universe to finish him off.
That would have at least given Madame Web something closer to her real powers and would have been a better reason for the superhero stuff to all seem so disconnected
Every line feels like the actor was given no context and was told it 10 seconds before they started recording
The fact that we got Madame Web but not the Coyote vs. ACME movie makes me hot with anger.
Ok why doesn't literally ANY writer's room hire you...this is my first video of yours I've watched and I'm so impressed with how you unpacked everything and put it back together.
Sony: " dont worry, we'll make the movie so bad nobody will pick it apart and can tell what we removed ....".
33:36 The very first set photos of this film were of the ad for Beyonce's 2003 album. Also, I tried to be an extra in this and they specifically were asking for vehicles from 2003 to 2005.
Also, I'm willing to bet that the shot of the spider in Madame Web's hand is a reshoot and not actually Dakota's hand. Watch that scene again with that in mind.
I'll tell you what really happened. The character of Ezekiel's was originally featured as a much larger role with a backstory and his journey to the top. Later, when tested before a real audience, the audience preferred Ezekiel's character and actually saw him as the hero and the girls as shallow and uninteresting.
And that is why they had to edit Ezekiel's scenes down to nothing and his dialogue forced to make him less significant.
Thank you for this Nando. Ever since I heard about all the ADR in this film, I wanted SOMEONE to figure out WHY. Hopefully in a few years someone from the film will come forward to give us first-hand account of what really happened. You are a movie production detective at this point.
Also, can anyone imagine what kind of behind-the-scenes analysis we could get if Nando teamed up briefly with Blank check?
This video is incredible, and something I have been wanting for months!
9:54-9:57 I enjoyed the blunt matter of fact way Nando said, 'an accident Cassie foresaw, Pepsi.' Perfect delivery by Nando. This movie should give every upstart screenwriter and director hope. Even if they are terrible upon getting declined by every studio 'Well Madame Web exists, if that can get made and given wide release I deserve a shot. I can legitimately do better.
that sad part about that is, or i guess the glass half full perspective, is that anyone that cares could probably make a better movie. the problem is that these are the people with the wealth and the power to succeed even if they fail. the movie bombed but all of these people involved still have jobs and wealth and power. they will go on to make more movies, some of them probably really bad. the screenwriter who could make a better movie will likely never have the opportunity because the systems that exist place a barrier to entry. not anyone can make a bad marvel movie. only sony can do that. and only people hired by sony can have the opportunity to make a better movie. and there are all these barriers to getting hired by sony. idk i guess i just am not heartened by this sentiment. yes there are plenty of people who can make better movies but they will never get the chance.
There’s another common use of ADR, especially in comedies or other lighter entertainment: adding throwaway jokes for punch-up.
The Mark of Kain is not a distinct power. It's just Kain using the same adhesion other spider-people use to hold on to surfaces to rip off people's skin
Yeah! Kaine’s powers were Spider-Man’s powers just cranked up a few notches. Kaine would have visions of the future, and that was just his Spidersense amped up.

I still don’t understand why they would change all that. The story you described just seemed a lot better.
MY thoughts exactly! Possibly some bad reactions in test screenings?
@@dextercool most likely the deal with Spiderman (Andrew Garfield/Tom Holland/whatever Disney-equivalent) did not work out...
Surely there’s something keeping them from including Spider-Man in their films. If Spidey was originally supposed to be in it and removing him would cost a bunch of money, why would they do it? Having Spider-Man in a movie would only make it more money and get people interested. There’s some reason they haven’t included Spider-Man in these spin-offs yet.
watching a sony spiderverse movie reminds me of Lisa Simpson explaining jazz to Homer
Lisa: "You have to listen to the notes they're not playing"
Homer: "I can do that at home"
* live action
(i.e. the _actual_ [animated] Spiderverse movies are works of art and some of the best Spider-man content created to date IMO, live action or otherwise)
The whole movie I expected to be revealed at some point that Ezekiel became rich by selling the spider to Oscorp, maybe at the end they would show a lab with a bunch of spiders on a terrarium (the descendants or clones of the original one) and the word "Oscorp" somewhere. I'm sure a scene of that nature was scrapped for the same reason why we never met Ben's girlfriend that's presumaly aunt May: because Sony is hoping to integrate Tom Holland's Peter into this universe but also don't want to have to do an obvious retcon if they have to use Andrew Garfield's Peter instead or even if they have to cast a 4th Spider-man, so their worldbuilding has to be extremely vague
I'd love to know Isabela Merced's experience with Comic book movies going from this to Superman.
"cigarette butts and metrocards" is the best joke I've heard in months. Thank you so much for the much needed laugh.
Speaking as a stray cat, I can take or leave the metro cards, but the cigarette butts are to die for!
Slot machine jackpots in the early 2000s could max out in the 10s of millions ranges so your gambling theory has more credence to it.
When I saw that this video was 40 minutes I thought to myself, "oh I'll just watch the first 10", but I was so thoroughly engrossed that I watched the whole thing. I did not see Madame Web because of what people were saying about the weird dialogue but your in depth analysis was way more fulfilling anyways! Thanks for the great content
Hearing ppl recap this movie is my ASMR ❤
AD-SMR you mean
This is my new favorite Nando video. Very funny and really interesting breakdown on a strange topic. Well done!!
Yeah, I have no idea what the original script looked like, but the final outcome was... baffling but charming in it's ways?
I almost wonder if part of the original story was Ezekial being obsessed with his visions of fighting Peter, and in the process of trying to tamper with the future he inadvertently CREATES the 3 Spider Women, and at the same time creates a timeline where Peter is NEVER bitten. With basically the plan of having a jumpstarted "Spider Avengers / X-men" team they could make future movies about.
Man... I do feel a little sad in all this because there COULD have been some wild stuff possible. For instance, let Anya already HAVE her powers but she's unsure about them. Because she's a character that was NEVER bitten by a spider, but instead got caught up in the Spider Society separately.
Mattie and Julia could get bitten later on by the escaped spider so that they have the BEGINNING of their power by the finale.
I am too big of a Kaine Parker fan to fully embrace the idea of Kaine being the actual villain, but Ezekial borrowing some of his shtick for the movie could still be fun.
This video was hilarious and totally worth Madame Web's existence.
Outstanding. The effort in this is fantastic 👏🏻
I’m so glad this video of yours popped off, hope it brings a lot of new people to your amazing channel
Look, I bet this took a lot of work, but I could watch hours and hours of someone dissecting a film like this and you should do more of this! Very well done and entertaining! BRAVO!!
The amount of work you put into this, it’s amazing. Spectacular. Sensational even.
Superior?
Sometimes the director thinks of better/funnier lines and a VFX artist reanimates the actors face to say the new lines. How do I know? Because I’ve done that for a movie, and if I’ve done, so have other VFX artists.
This kind of archaeology of media is so interesting to me. The people that have the answer are alive but may not want it known, but you can never tie up every loose thread.
I thought the A in ADR stood for asynchronous, as-in the dialogue is recorded at a different time from recording the video as opposed to recording the dialogue at the same time as recording the video.
The Aculos Zone is up there with the Bechdel Test in terms of media literacy.
AED is a type of Defibrillator, specifically designed to assist with CPR. It allows people with minimum training to deliver a helpful shock, after the machine analyzes if the patient needs it. In addition, the pads are just on the patient before it does anything, so you don't have to do the whole defibrillator process. Oh, and it offers a metronome effect so you can do CPR better.
And when do you learn about how to use it? CPR classes. So yeah, that part makes sense.
I'm sorry, someone called shotgun over a woman IN LABOR????
14:15 DefinitelyNotSpiderMan didn't get crushed by the PEPSI "S", but, five seconds later you can see it fall onto who I presume is Cassie in the water.
This is absolutely hilarious, by the way.
