    • @soadodadjian730
      @soadodadjian730 3 года назад +22

      @@waynebrady1819 Wrong. There are several reasons why Berne was chosen. Firstly, they wanted an influential city that was in the heart of Switzerland. Lucerne was the best suited for this but Lucerne as a canton was catholic and because the catholics lost the "civil war" they were not given this privilege.
      Because Geneva, Basel and Lausanne were not as close to the geograhic centre of Switzerland and Zurich was insignificant at that time, Berne was chosen.

    • @waynebrady1819
      @waynebrady1819 3 года назад +65

      @@soadodadjian730 Wrong. The "Hauptstadtfrage der Schweiz" was clarified in 1848. At that time Zürich already was the largest and most influencal city in Switzerland and not close to being insignificant, as you can see in the first swiss Volkszählung in 1850, Bern was second. Genève, Basel and Lausanne weren't even in consideration and at the end there were only 3 candidates with Zürich, Bern and Luzern. They chose Bern because especially the eastern part of Switzerland rejected the idea of Zürich as a capital city, the problem they had with the Sonderbund in Luzern, Bern's proximity (strategically and culturally) to the Romandie (as I wrote) and the fact that the city of Bern offered to help pay for the localities and the government can use them rent free.

    Wait, just wait!
    What was told in this video was true but for only a few exceptions.
    During a specific period of the french revolution, namely 1798 to 1803, Switzerland was known as "Helvetic Republic" .
    In the first place, a small city named Aarau, wich was loyal to France, had the same function as Bern does today. In the first helvetic constitution of 1798, the city of Lucerne was mentioned as capital!
    Three years later 1801 the second constitution came in place. Now it had to be the city of Bern to be the capital, because it was the capital of the largest and most powerful canton of these days.
    The helvetic republic then fell apart. A few years of chaos took place. Then the idea of a new swiss federation was born.
    Finally, in 1853, todays west wing of the swiss capitol was build in Bern. Not because of the constitution, nor because it is the most beautiful city but because of money (since we're talking about switzerland)!
    Bern became the "federal city" because the council of the city hall decided to pay for the building!
    What they didn't know was that the country startet to join in a few more cantons so that bern had to build also an east wing and the central wing wich was finally completed 1902, 50 years later!
    There is another small detail.
    Switzerland is also not the real name of the country. Officially it means: Confoederatio Helvetica wich can be translated as Confederation of Helvetica. Formerly it is the Swiss Federation. This is a reference to the legendary oath taken at the foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy wich took place in the "Canton of Schwyz" (pronounced: 'shveets' ) . And that's why it's called SWITZerland!
    Tanks fot your attention.

    There is so much wrong with this.
    While Bern is not the de jure capital (because there isn't any) it is the de facto capital. Meaning your whole video is about semantics.
    1:45 The reason the "neighbors" didn't bother is that Switzerland was part of the Holy Roman Empire until 1648 and every bit that is now Switzerland was fought for and won by the Swiss confederation. It's not that Switzerland was not worth it, it was that Switzerland was so good at war, that it wasn't possible.
    Switzerland was once famous for their warriors (why do you think the pope still has a Swiss guard).
    3:57 Lucerne is smaller than Bern
    4:00 Bern wasn't less intimidating, rather it was the opposite. In the middle ages Bern was the most powerful city not only in Switzerland but north of the Alps. Most of what is Switzerland was won by or with the help of Bernese troops. That's why the historic seat of the government was in Bern and why Bern was chosen as the "Bundesstadt/federal city".
    4:26 There is literally no way you could pronounce "Lausanne" worse...

    • @DrDiHai
      @DrDiHai 3 года назад +1

      You're unfortunately absolutely right. I blame the lack of good sources in English about Switzerland, HAI videos are often a lot better than this. Also I might add the part about Switzerland being the result of "let's be even more peaceful" kind of flies into the face of the fact it was created after a civil war and decades of internal strife, after the Helvetic Republic collapsed to... internal strife. One thing though, I'd say that Berne was definitely among the most important cities in 1848 when it was decided, but it was not as most powerful or influential as it once was, and Zurich is probably not the capital because it was might have been seen as more of the centre of the liberal coalition at the time.
