I've built a lot of heavy-duty trailers and some long enclosed but never a teardrop, odd since as a young guy I spent a summer in one panning for gold with my stepdad... maybe that's why? LOL But I have to say that looks so cute and light it would be a breeze to drag around the country now that I'm old and retired. Looks fairly easy and ya don't need a lot of shop for the build. Where's the plans at that you mentioned? by the way it's great your wifes helping and being a partner with you, you're a lucky man. I would like to see how much room you have for sleeping. And don't forget to mention your height. great video.

You could build one cheap using a harbor freight bolt together trailer as a base. Or spend a little more for a light trailer from a big box hardware stores.

What kind of teardrop camper build would you recommend for a hot tropical weather like Costa Rica? It has to be something light, that is basically a fridge to have an ac with propane or gas, and it also has to withstand heavy rains. What is the best option for the body of the camper. Epoxy Fiber with a foam or some sort of Styrofoam and a light wood or aluminum inside? I was thinking I only need it to be rigid on the outside so i could use something light to give it the finish for the inside, but not sure if that s a good idea. Thanks!
Why not insulate the hatch? Did you insulate the back of the cabinets and not show it? Or is the distance to the outside enough that it doesn't matter that there's no insulation on that side?

You obviously did an excellent job with this first stage, BUT I had to use RUclips's playback-speed utility to slow down the video to 25% speed in order to see what you were doing and how you did it! Even then, the "action" was crazy fast. In my opinion, "time lapse" needs to be used judiciouslly if your goal is to help viewers learn your process.

i not understand why use heavy plywood, come very heavy camper, why not use aluminium/thin steel C-channel frame and foam sheet and top glue aluminium sheet, lot more lightweight.
Doesn't make sense to insulate the galley? I mean it's another thermal barrier right? Intriguing if I had the space I'd do it...I have the tools but no space to support a build evolving over weeks like that hrmph.
I wonder if there's a way to do this without using all of the glue. Concerned about the toxicity of living inside of so much glue, as it's brand new and will be offgassing for awhile. Also, might consider a hatch entrance for mine

I have a pop up camper that I'd like to transform into a hard top..somehow. maybe start from bottom up 🤷♀️. Not sure yet. But your work is inspirational..adding the fact I'm learning while watching you guys as I have no clue what materials I'm going with for now either.. I'm just concerned as mine is registered as a popup..but don't feel safe with the tent, rather remodel it sturdy and make it safe. Any ideas and suggestions? All welcomed of course. Haha of course it is safe and no you won’t get pulled over! Unless it IS unsafe, then you might get pulled over. But you could build from our plans and do just fine.
My buddy and I built one several years ago for him and his wife but we didn't waste the money on the aluminum. we just filled the seams with auto motive seam sealer and then painted it with White Truck bed liner and used the auto seam sealer because unlike regular caulk it will last for decades in the Arizona sun. we used paint because That aluminum seathing is $88 a sheet, a gallon of house truck bed liner even at it's HIGHEST is $60. Beautiful camper but some things just aren't needed, there are just as good and cheaper ways to do things.

Wow! That trip would be unforgettable! These teardrops weight 900-1400 lbs depending on how decked out they are. A foamie might be the best option for you.

Very nice Builds I really like those little Trailers. One thing I recommend a Battery operated Caulking Gun those work very well and put out consistent Caulk or Glue

Hey guys! Love this build! It helped me understand so much of the process for building my own now. One thing I’m having trouble planning… how did you cut out the holes for the cabinets so cleanly? Trying to figure out how to do that without a cnc.
Don’t you coat the bottom? Or is the bottom wood lust exposed to elements? I would think water/ dirt etc would ruin the undercarriage? This must making it rot over several years???
We do actually cost the bottom with fence paint and a layer of RV underlayment. The underlayment is added protection we started doing later but haven’t had any issues with just fence paint. It may need to be maintained after a few years though.

I have my one ton f350 for my 5th wheel trailer but just getting in the hybrid car with no destination would be great some times. Thanks.
It is very simple if you break it down into parts. We have plans to help with that. Otherwise just plan it out in phases. It can be finished in a couple months.
That thing would probably surprise you at what it was at the end they're putting a lot of material in that thing it's going to be strong there's no doubt but I believe it's going to come in on the heavy end check into some lighter white alternatives if you're wanting to keep the weight down
This maybe ultra light compared to a motor home but not compared to another Camper of this same size, there are many that are aluminum and PVC panels that are much lighter than using wood as you have. However tiny campers are kool.

I understand that you're a good carpenter, but you still stole someone else's proprietary design. Teardrop should sue you for copyright infringement and stolen intellectual property.

These can cost anywhere from $3k to 10k. Just depends on size and how decked out you want it.

That’s doable if you can find used parts, but the average/fastest build is normally around $4-6k.

They are called Clamp-it clips by Rockler. They are SUPER handy and only $10. Can’t find them on Amazon though.

Did you also sheet aluminum across the bottom or did you leave the raw wood exposed? I know there are different schools of thought on this.
We actually use a woven RV underlayment specifically made for the underside of campers. And before that we protect the wood with fence paint.

Yeah it definitely is a great experience. We use .040 all around. Sometimes .050 on the roof.

Just use a scroll blade on a jigsaw. It’s a thinner blade that allows you to make tighter turns. Take your time to follow the lines!

That’s router with a flush trim bit. It earns its keep building one.

Did you take any steps to waterproof the floor? I'm planning to build on an existing trailer with a wire mesh floor. What would you suggest to put down before plywood?

I understand that you're a good carpenter, but you still stole someone else's proprietary design. Teardrop should sue you for copyright infringement and stolen intellectual property.
Haha That’s impossible. I designed the shape myself. But It is a teardrop camper and this is generally the shape of them all.

Didn't get to see what it looked like when you were finished because you stuck a big advertisement right in the middle of the damn screen That was a little disappointing watch the whole thing not even to get the chance to look at it and see how good a job you did Oh well I guess you're advertising more important

Ultralight?
First thing is 2x4s and an inch of plywood.
For a camper though, it’s actually super duper light.
How long did this take you? I figure if I double it I would get an accurate time frame for myself.
This one only took us about 4-5 weeks to put together. It’s not terribly complicated if you are comfortable with tools.
