Life cycle of mealybugs

  • Mealybugs appear frequently in ornamental and vegetable crops. Populations can reach a high density and so are a serious threat for growers. They cause damage by sucking plant sap. The overall effect is reduced photosynthesis and therefore decreasing yield. Where flowers and fruits are concerned, these often drop off. Mealy bugs also produce honeydew on which moulds grow. These sooty moulds result in considerable damage in crops. Mealy bugs get their name from the fact that the body of the females are covered with a white, powdery wax layer. The males possess wings, but lack mouthparts and are therefore incapable of feeding. They only live to fertilize the females. Eggs are laid in a sticky, foamy mass of wax threads. Also known as egg sacs. Once the batch of eggs is laid, the female dies.
After emerging, the nymphs are yellow-brown, not yet covered with wax. They are actively mobile and known as crawlers. Second instar nymphs are darker and less active. The males develop further inside a cottony cocoon. A winged male eventually emerges from the pupa. Female nymphs, on the other hand, settle on the leaf and begin to secrete wax. They moult into further stages without a complete metamorphosis. Mealybugs can be controlled by natural enemies. Think of Koppert’s ‘Operation Mealybug’ for example.

Thank you for this informative (and disgusting) video. I HATE THESE GUYS ! (as much as white flies) Honestly , I was just introduced to them in my garden. They nearly destroyed a beloved and rare cactus. I am still trying to resurrect it-- it was reduced to pieces of cacti. Now, they seem to be infecting several plants , and I can"t figure out how its spreading ! ( I check every plant & quickly treat/isolate) For example, a house plant (grape ivy) has always been isolated in my bathroom (hanging from ceiling hook). never around other plants ! But it has a severe infection. I thought it was just a lack of water because I frequently forgot to water it. Do mealybugs live in potting soil ? If so--- I will be extra careful when purchasing new soil. Organic ? It must have been infected long ago (years), but didn't show signs until now (neglect by me) Please tell me where these guys come from and best way to kill them. I have been using rubbing alcohol spray thanks !!!!!!

Don't Think ants is enemy to mealy bugs, cuz mealy bug can produce honeydew for the ants, so the ants use them for honey farming..

These tiny pests are extremely hard 2 eradicate. They can ruin ornaments in little or no time and can migrate to plants close by. If u smash them they have a bitter smell. Wash hands after touching infected plants. Spider mites and white flies also difficult to controll

Eradicate every single ant you can find first. Then use dishwasher solution or simple soap solution to wash off the trees/plants once a day first then once a week for maintenance. Don't burn your plants with soap solution, test the strength in a single leaf first.

I felt so betrayed by ants when i realized they were working together with the mealy bugs... I thought we had like a contract or something. Other than that I've been catchin g lady bugs and putting them to work which seems to take care of it MILDLY but they mostly fly off and get caught in webs which is so embarassing... like insects... they are wild. but I realized... bitch... why can't I just be the ladybug? So i started licking my plants and manually taking care of the mealybug "cities" with infestations myself by eating them and they actually taste delicious ....must be that honey dew.
