I just wanted to let you know that I followed your advice for getting rid of fungus gnats with bottom watering. THEY ARE ALL GONE NOW. After a few weeks of bottom watering only. Thank you so much!!!
@@onlyplants Hi, I see how this would help with the leaf mealybugs. But how does this help against the root mealybugs? They are not quite the same. Thank you in advance for your help!
This is maybe my 20th video of yours, and they just keep getting better (it's the subtitles I really love). I very much appreciate your nerdiness, brother, and your knowledge of Asian climate (I live in Nepal), and your beautiful English. I am looking forward to the spidermite video!
Excellent. Thank you for an entertaining but really informative treatment (pun only later intended ;-)) of a really timely topic. I've been struggling with mealy bugs. I think you may have told me how they got into my plants. Early in the summer, a lot of ants came into the house, and I found them all over my plants. I got rid of the ants, but I think it was after that that the mealy bugs became apparent. I've been keeping them at bay through vigilance, but they do tend to reappear. Now, I have a new plan. I use a product called conant here... ants bring it back into the nest thinking its food and the next day the whole colony is gone. And no mealy bugs too.
As a new beginner, I watched other you tubers their pest were sexy and I was like I can handle them but with this video I am not ready. Your content is very real
Thank you for sharing this. My encounter of mealy bugs was just last week; they were having huge party time around my hibiscus plants; got so huge till u can really see how fat they were. So yes; thank you for this video. Can't wait for the spider mites; coz i find them hard to kill for some reasons; keep having to attend to them almost after a week.
You have to be consistent with spidermites... thankfully for me 1 application and they are gone. I use that same neem formula that I shared in mealy bugs video
Carnivorous pitcher plants have have a symbiotic relationship with mice and they do the same thing lol. It’s bizarre but cool. Great video! I like the science involved with growing plants and plus they are just so beautiful. Having pests or diseases is a bummer but learning how to solve the problems are fun to me. thanks for the tips.
so I valued your video greatly! I am having trouble with my first ever pest and it is the mealy bug. I had to throw one plant away because they just kept coming back. However, I am concerned with rotting my sanseverias by spraying down the crown like this. Also, how can you do this effectively on very full and large plants like the wandering jew? I had to just chop mine because I wanted to get rid of the soil. But there are sooo many leaves, how can I MAKE SURE they are gone right away? I do not want to keep losing plants because there are some missed.
You can spray large plants this way too. And do get their media soaked with neem oil mix like this as the roots can uptake the neem oil and up to the leaves. The pests would ingest these oils. I would repeat treatment in 1-2 weeks time to break their life cycle.
👍I have the same exact sprayer🤗 very useful👍. This bugs are nuisance👻👻👻. I blast the non delicate plants with water first from a hose sprayer, then I spray the same solution same as you made and leave the solution on the plant to dry for protection😁 And it works great👍. I find that if I hose down the plants when watering, bugs dont seem to like the wet area🤔. Another great video Sean👍.
Yay, another great video. 🌿👍I’ve been using neem oil+soap+ water solution for all pest problems too. After this I have to look and add Curacon pesticide to the solution for extra fights. Been dealing with whiteflies.... they’re so persistent 😞😡😤....
onlyplants I brought all my house plants outside this summer for a change, and of course white flies and spiders mites decided to make their first time visits. Lol 😂 I’ve tried so many ways... yellow sticky traps..spray water under the leaves... neem oil solution every four/five days... and going around looking crazy wiping down each leaves .... I have say after all that, the population of the white flies has gone under control a lot , but there are a few left flying around. I just hope I get to those first before they lay more eggs...... so I’m here watching your videos while wiping down the leaves. 😁🌿💚 Thank you again for all the great tips and tricks to keep our plants happy and healthy. 🌿🌱
Thank God!!! You released this video... This weeks is like my mealy bugs strikes weeks 😑 Already spraying neem oil solution, it works so far... Btw, where can I get the neem oil in big size like yours in Indonesia? Thanks sean ✌🏻
I'm glad I found your video. I'm currently fighting mealy bugs on a succulent and they are awful. I have tried straight alcohol as someone told me to which semi worked for a short time but caused black spots as I was unaware to keep it out of the sunlight. I will try your solution soon as I have found a couple on my geraniums now 😭 which I already keep a tight eye on for caterpillars. Where can I get a sprayer like you have? Also, what is the name of the granule pesticide stuff you used?
Sprayer i buy randomly from online marketplace but any garden store would have them. The granule is carbofuran sold under brand name furadan but it could be a different brand where you sre
I went with dracaena too. 🙂 I really like your videos, I could watch them all day. Thank you for all the time you spend gathering information, filming and editing your videos they are full of valuable information.
Can I add to check all over the pot too. Underneath in the drain holes, under the rim. Mealies like to hide. I can't remember you mentioning this Shaun. Sorry if you did.
Ohhh yes I did mention it when I said Iifted a pot and saw in horror as ants were harboring mealy bug babies! Haha but I guess I should be more specific about actually looking carefully and routinely
Oooo Ive actually never seen thrips before... And a few other pests that are common to others. I have a feeling that this is due to my regular pest control measures which I will share!
Shaun(sorry if I misspelled you name), I think I saw sunflower seed shells in your plant soil around 3:29. Apparently sunflower seeds are not a good addition to soil mixes because they produce a substance that prevents other plants from growing. If that's not a sunflower seed shell, ignore my comment lol
Another alternative to kill mealy bugs is , I use kitchen waste like shallot/ garlic skin put it in the water for 2 days, and voila it’s an organic pesticide and can work as fertilizer too. For mealy bugs I add 1 tea spoon of liquid soap, now my plants are mealy bugs free
Thanks for the video! Actually right now I'm dealing with them and most of my sansevierias / dracaenas have lots of infestation on the bottom of the leaves like yours too Okay, time to hunt for some Neem Oil and Curacron then
I was wondering why my plants had so many ants in their pots. Now, I know why. It's too late because I used too much rubbing alcohol on all over the plants, and they died. They were not strong ones, though.
Every time I encounter pest , my immediate reaction is to dump the plant in the bin. I’m so scared of it spreading ! As a preventive measure, I’ve decided to lightly spray my plants with pesticide once a week. I hope this will keep them away. It seems that most nurseries are using malathion. What are your thoughts about malathion ?
Ive never heard of that before... but dont throw away your plants! The treatment I show you really works to control most species of pests, have faith and give it time 😌
Thank you for the video! Another thing I noticed is that male mealy bugs are flying and look kinda like fungus gnats, yet they carry eggs with them. I had a mealy big attack and than a fungus gnats appeared too, even that the soil is dry...than I noticed that I have mealy bugs in a plant in another room that had fungus gnats too..it’s not 100% but I think the males transport eggs around...
Sean 🌿💙🪴🙏 love your videos, but please list in writing what the blue stuff you sprinkle in soil in you mealy bug video.!?! I can't get the name right to search for it. Thanks
Im not familiar with the chemical pesticides there. Best to check with a garden store near you. This is maybe because curacon is too toxic/risky to be allowed in some regions
Hiiii how often do you go back to do this again? Some people recommend to keep doing the wash every day for 7 days just to make sure you get all the mealy bugs out (personally I use a dilution of isopropyl alcohol with soap dish and water and just drench my soil but some plants don't like veing watered everyday 😂)
Thank you Sean. I never knew those were mealy bugs! You gave me a confirmation and closure as well on 2 of my plant who had Mealy bugs and had me on my feet for months! Although one just died but the other one is really thriving and yes, using essential oils to get rid of it. Thank you so much!
What do you recommend for mealy bugs for indoor plants? I’ve had to move all my plants inside now that the weather has chilled down and I’m weary of spraying pesticides indoors. Thanks!

Found some spider mites on my Epiprenum... any tips what to use? I washed the 🍃 with insecticidal soap and spray the plants with neem oil, but don’t know if that’s enough.. What about Curacron?
how frequent do you spray pesticide on the leaves? and does the mealy bugs come back to attack the root sometime after they die? is mealybug attack on the root indicating healthy plants or just simply means the plants are not doing well hence prone to pest attack? My potted bell pepper plants and ghost chili are being attacked by soil mealy T.T

Many reasons why they attack… plant health… your plant species… your environment (if they are tastier plants the mealy bugs will go there instead… your pest control measure… and some luck hehe
Great video! Thank you ! Finally someone who uses a little something extra in their mix ( the Curacron). Never heard of Curacron. But I looked it up . May try that . I have Brevipalpus mites and Mealybugs . They suck so bad ! Brevipalpus mites are false spider mites that don’t spin webs and they’re microscopic. Do you have good luck with this mixture of yours and spider mites ? I’m so tired of mites and Mealybugs. 🤮
Yeppp they work on spider mites too. I love to mix natural and chemicals (as long as they are diluted properly). Kinda enjoy the benefits from each ingredients.
Thank you so much for this!! Recently found some root mealies in my monstera adansonii's soil. I knocked off most of the old soil, washed the roots several times with warm-ish water, repotted with new soil afterwards & already watered it. (Without neem oil though, because my oils are still on the way and I was afraid my monstera would just...dehydrate lol) Just wondering, can I just use the neem oil - soap - water drench directly into the soil without any Curacron? I don't have any Curacron on hand and it's not readily available where I am + Whether I can do this soil drench even though I very recently watered my plant? Would that be too much moisture, because I don't want root rot too 😅
Thanks for another great vid packed with info and tips. I think many of us now have a better idea how to deal with these nasty mealies. Yup some plants are more prone than others: hoyas and aglaonemas seem to attract more mealybugs. I think the best way to get rid of them is to spot them early when they're few and pluck/flush them off the plant before a full scale infestation has set in. But looks like your neem oil intervention is a wonderful treatment for serious infestations. Yeah I hate mealies too but at least they move rather slowly and there's quite a wide time gap window between early infestation and the fatal stage. Unlike plant public enemy no.1 - SPIDER MITES the absolute horror pest of plant collectors. Looking forward to your upcoming vid on how to exterminate these nasty little monsters that can kill a small plant overnight.
@@onlyplants Maybe the alocasias will be the best place to keep an eye carefully. The spider mites love them a bit too much, but I think you're right. They appear less during the cooler rainy season but when it's hot and dry, have to watch out for them. I will never forgive them for killing my beautiful feathery tillandsia gardneri.
Ah ok thats might be the reason why my plants in our rooftop has ants with white something in the mouth hahaha i used baygon spraying all over the flooring thanks for this video o my God finally
Hi Sean , after you drenched the entire Snake plant with water , how do you Ensure it does not rot ? I seem to kill at least 1 snake plant every time I water 😩
Keep it in good airflow and high light area, but not full sun ya. Never drench the plant in daytime only evenings. Repot to fast draining media if necessary too
@@onlyplants Thanks! Just ordered a bottle of neem oil. Looking forward to clearing them. I realized there were a lot of ants and other insects/pests flying (i'm not sure what are those things). Can I pour the leftover solution (neem oil + dish soap + water) into the soil?
I don’t know...I kinda like need oil smell. I think it’s really has a positive action that I like everything about it. But it lasts for very long if you have it on the skin...that does suck
im staring at my p hilodendron like crazy but I swear its just like hard water deposit and dust lol. def doesnt look like a bug but im thinking oMG WHAT IF
Fast draining or airy soil, dont let it dry out completely but don’t let it get wet for too long... treat for pests on the leaves they are very prone to spidermites. Medium light 😌
I hate mealybugs!!!!!!!!! Brought a pothos plant home from work that someone gave me and it had them. Everybody, don't forget to look under the rim of the pot..... I kept spraying and they kept coming back and I happened to look under the rim and it was LOADED!!!! It's getting a whole new home now!!!
Oh yeah they can live under the pot. Anyways pay attention to ants too. Ants have no business in your potted plants unless they have mealy bug accomplices
@@onlyplants Yes! And aphids........bad summer with aphids here in FL....when you see ants you have aphids!!! I have several hibiscus and when I see those ants running up and down the stem............get the Neem! I used to use a systemic until I found out they destroy pollinators!!
@@onlyplants thanks, it seems to be working well. I had a timetable to keep track so I am not overwatering with insecticide spray. So far I do not see new pests and saw some new leaves growing out from my Hibiscus plants. Thank you.
Neem oil will burn the plants if exposed to light within 6-8 hours of exposure, I believe this time is their half-life. Make sure you apply only in evenings
Theres no recipe. I eye ball everything when I pour both natural and chemical Pesticides. For natural, neem oil with soapy water. For chemicals, its just water. I always dilute everything more than any instructions would suggest. (Honestly I dont read the instructions… 😅) but I treat frequently
Mealy bugs...gulp. I live in SG...not sure if I can get curacron here. Will just Castile soap and neem oil work ... at least till I get some curacron. Is there an alternative to curacron. that you know of that's sold in my area? Sorry for being such a pest with the questions.... hehe. Btw...do you have a recipe for a neem oil drench? Thanks
Neem oil hurts them reaaaaal bad. That should do the trick. You can surely find pest control in your country that is government approved... for neem oil soil drench its the same as what I showed in the video. I usually eyeball it. Neem oil is very strong you must dilute it a lot!
I'm sick as well by using white tissue to smear those mealy bugs and see those red blood spots on the tissue. Ew! that's a lot of mealy bugs on the leaves.
Biggest problem creator for plant lovers. I lost my hibiscus plant because of mealybugs monster . my pothos, syngonium and alocasia plants are facing it but I use paper towel to clean it regularly...
Thank you thank you thank you - imagine me bowing / kowtowing to you right now! Ommmmm... I have been waiting / searching for someone who really SHOW what real plants with infestation looks like... Honestly when one search online - its always super close up and magnify version of the pest ... but WHO has such time / tools to magnify @ home! So, I am forever playing cluedo with pest control ( mealy, spider mite, white flies, funus gnats, wait what ....?!!!) M so glad that you are showing real time real live - how the plants look and the treatments! THANK YOU! OMG appreciate the pro tip about neem oil , now I know I have been burning my green babies with EO! Argh! PS I spy with my little eye .... Heineken by the sink... wahahahaha
@@onlyplants i cant seems to get curacron in Spore. Would you have any other recommendation? I use starxle g pellets, and also neem oil + dish soap water solution for kill & destroy missions.
now I know the culprit :/ ants :/ I've killed all of my alocasia dragon scale. Now trying to grow a Frydek and stingray. I just lost my stingray's leaves because root mealy bugs attacked its roots.
I know it’s for practical reasons but the goggles really contribute to the plant nerd look! 😂 Thanks for this video, really helpful.

Can be sprayed as preventative of course, especially the neem oil. Its an excellent fungicide as well
Great video!
(Without neem oil though, because my oils are still on the way and I was afraid my monstera would just...dehydrate lol)
Just wondering, can I just use the neem oil - soap - water drench directly into the soil without any Curacron? I don't have any Curacron on hand and it's not readily available where I am + Whether I can do this soil drench even though I very recently watered my plant? Would that be too much moisture, because I don't want root rot too 😅
Yes neem oil really works on them. Repeat treatment in 7-10 days
@@onlyplants alright, thank you!!
I can’t find Curacron online! Any substitute avail for US market?
It might be banned in the states… I actually recommend good old neem oil if your collection is not big.
I did soak my plant when I got it in the mail tho so I think its probably not a pest
Does the dishwashing liquid harm the plant root when we spray directly into the leaves? I'm also having these bugs on my plants 😥 they are so stinky
Hello I believe it wont really harm the plant. But to be safe i did use soap that has less chemicals and no fragrance etc...
Thank you I will try ❤️
Thanks Richard. I have to first wait for plants to get spidermites haha
Repot to fast draining media if necessary too
May I know if this solution is safe to spray on edible plants? Like pandan leaf, herbs etc. what do I do if there is an infestation in the root?
Neem oil is safe, you can also water the plant with it. Its called neem oil soil drench and it works too.
@@onlyplants Thanks! Just ordered a bottle of neem oil. Looking forward to clearing them. I realized there were a lot of ants and other insects/pests flying (i'm not sure what are those things). Can I pour the leftover solution (neem oil + dish soap + water) into the soil?
Is the neem oil recipe toxic to humans if you use it on edible plants like basil or mint?
Its not toxic. Neem is great for skin and hair and is used in natural skincare sometimes. They do smell like onion farts though.
How long will the mixed spray solution last (if you don’t use it all up on the first day)?
I hear they dont last very long (half life on plants are around 6-8 hours) which is why this mix is rarely sold pre mixed.
Sean, you like Heineken, lol me too. sorry not related but i saw it. anyways, i will continue to watch. lol
Haha actually that bottle was from a propagate 😌
Yass new upload
🙌🏻🐸
one more question! How can you tell a live bug from a dead remains of one you successfully killed?
The dead one would not move at all 😀 usually knocks off easily when sprayed down.
What about the soil?
Yes you can water the soil with it too
I don’t see this insecticide on Amazon ! Would any insecticide work? 5:35
Most brands should work fine. I usually grab random ones based on price and proximity 😀
Thankssss.. I need this.. 👍👍👍👍👍 mealy bugs is my biggest enemy 🤣
Haha 😆
I don’t know...I kinda like need oil smell. I think it’s really has a positive action that I like everything about it. But it lasts for very long if you have it on the skin...that does suck
Actually I can taste neem oil in my breath hours after I handle it. Dermal absorption I think.
onlyplants I know😂 I like it. I guess I am a minor minority hahaha
I'm sorry to bother you, but could you spell the name of the pesticide you show in this video? It's purple in color.
Thanks!
Its carbofuran, illegal in some countries and sold under different brand names. I believe “Sparkle G” is carbofuran
Thanks so much.
ewwwww! Massive rave party!!!🤢 🤮 I think I would've thrown it away cuz I would be fearful. 😂 Great info!
Haha plants always recover if you catch pests in time! I loveeeee watching plants recover 🙃
im staring at my p hilodendron like crazy but I swear its just like hard water deposit and dust lol. def doesnt look like a bug but im thinking oMG WHAT IF
The bug would probably move… see if you can get it under magnifying glass. They are not particularly pest prone genus though
Alocasia Polly care and tips, please. My friend brought me one and now all leaves are withered and acting like it was disappointed in me.
Thankyou
🙏🏽😌
Does this method help in root mealy bugs?
Yep you water it with the solution. Repeat after 4-5 days
@@onlyplants thanks, it seems to be working well. I had a timetable to keep track so I am not overwatering with insecticide spray. So far I do not see new pests and saw some new leaves growing out from my Hibiscus plants. Thank you.
Will the neem oil burn if the plants are under grow lights? I hate the smell of neem so much xD do you think I can use hydrogen peroxide instead?
Hydrogen peroxide will kill off all beneficial fungi and bacteria too
Neem oil will burn the plants if exposed to light within 6-8 hours of exposure, I believe this time is their half-life. Make sure you apply only in evenings
@@onlyplants ah, too bad! Neem oil here we go! lol my apartment is going to reek :D thanks for the reply!
@@onlyplants will the added curacon kill earthworms too? I have a few living in each of my indoor pots :(
do you have this recipe in written form as ears are not great
Theres no recipe. I eye ball everything when I pour both natural and chemical
Pesticides.
For natural, neem oil with soapy water.
For chemicals, its just water.
I always dilute everything more than any instructions would suggest. (Honestly I dont read the instructions… 😅) but I treat frequently
Hello. I can't find Curacron here in Calgary. Could I replace it with something else?
Hello, yes you can. Check your local plant supply store because every region is different. There must be good reasons to ban certain chemicals!
In the US it looks like Bonide Systemic House Plant Insect Control granules have great reviews mentioning mealy bugs.
Neem oil is very strong you must dilute it a lot!
onlyplants ... thanks for your help.
In the US it looks like Bonide Systemic House Plant Insect Control granules have great reviews mentioning mealy bugs.
Will any of these products kill succulents?
If you have good airflow and they dry off fast I think its ok
"I kinda enjoyed working with pest" careful for what you wish for😈😈, the plant god may jinx you haha
Haha the plant god only smites people who hate and despises pests!
I forgot to ask if this concoction is safe to use indoors? :D
Yes absolutely. 😌
Sean , can you talk about online plant shopping? , also how do you spell your name Sean or Shawn? 🙈
Hello I did have a cheap plants online video in case you havent checked that out yet 😊
I'm sick as well by using white tissue to smear those mealy bugs and see those red blood spots on the tissue. Ew! that's a lot of mealy bugs on the leaves.
I always thought mealy bugs blood would be white somehow...
Biggest problem creator for plant lovers. I lost my hibiscus plant because of mealybugs monster . my pothos, syngonium and alocasia plants are facing it but I use paper towel to clean it regularly...
Ooooo try out the spray it really stops them from coming back
Thank you thank you thank you - imagine me bowing / kowtowing to you right now! Heineken by the sink... wahahahaha
Haha you can put a few drops of peppermint or cedarwood EO in the spray mix. A lot of pests hate the scent.
That bottle of heineken is from a propagate... I usually drink whisky... like too much...
@@onlyplants i cant seems to get curacron in Spore. Would you have any other recommendation? I use starxle g pellets, and also neem oil + dish soap water solution for kill & destroy missions.
So the ants like… carry them there???
Yesss. Cool huh!
now I know the culprit :/ ants :/ I've killed all of my alocasia dragon scale. Now trying to grow a Frydek and stingray. I just lost my stingray's leaves because root mealy bugs attacked its roots.
Ahhh be sure to treat the soil with pesticide
@@onlyplants sure, thanks for the tips!
