- Observatory Tour - Inside a Roll Off Roof Observatory.
I wish I had a permanent set up like this. My next home will definitely have the space for something like this. Can you imagine all the time you could save not having to set up every night?
Would you like your own observatory? Ever wonder what other people are doing? Let's take a tour and get some ideas. After seeing this observatory I am ready to start planning a build.

"if I'm not careful this could end up being my next house" I totally understand the feeling! :D Great video and observatory! Location is absolutely lovely!
Glad you enjoyed!
Wonderful interview! Cool observatory.
I want one, time will tell. Thanks for sharing Amy. :)
I hope it happens for you soon! Clear skies!
Awesome video! Starting my data collecting to decide which shed will work. Hope to start building later this year depending on how my chemotherapy goes. Your video is a big help!! Thanks!

One of my favourite videos, watch this one a lot for inspiration
Mine too!
Like you I could see my next house being a observatory. I'm not sure what my better half would say about that but it works for me. But then again I don't need much. A bathroom, a bed, a microwave, a fridge, and coffee pot and I am good as long as its cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Well, semi warm in the winter. ;) Be safe.
I'm house hunting now and I keep thinking of how to add this to the yard or as an addition to the house.
That is a great setup. I like the idea that its nice a big, lots of room to move around.. if I had that I would just live there .. no house required..lol .. thanks Amy!
I said the same thing when I went inside. lol
Thanks Mr Ed, great job
Thanks for watching!
I'm building one now. 12' by 16' will have two piers. Plans came from Backyard Observatories. Or he can build one for you. Great guy. Clear nights 🤗
They do great work! My next house will have one definitely.
Soooo cool! Wish I could build an observatory!
I know this feeling so well. Wonderful to dream though.
Great work! I've been thinking about an observatory too. More like dreaming. 😆
You and me both!
Great video! So cool
Glad you liked it!!
I've had gear envy but holy cow! I want that.
Seriously!!!! My jaw dropped at the thought of not having to set up. Add the AC and I almost passed out!
Nothing wrong with a red light bathroom!
May as well include the espresso bar
Funny
When I started astro about three years ago i quickly got tired of setting up and breaking down 20-30kg (40-60lb) of equipment. On one of the concrete pads I made for my tripod I built a 1.5 square by 2 meter (4.5x6ft) little shed. The top half is hinged on each side and opens to allow 360 degrees view to the horizon but for a few trees, a wee house, a couple of hills... lol. Its only good for photography because i cant walk around it and so now planning to make it bigger. I'm thinking of putting the whole observatory on rails and just opening a door on one side and pushing it completely away from my kit leaving it free from obstructing walls. I'm thinking of making a pier so I can maintain a lower footprint but also allowing for a longer refractor or a taller reflector. Watching this video gives me some other ideas - cheers. ANYWAY I'm anxiously waiting till the end of this week when Comet Neowise becomes visible (hopefully) in the evening sky here in Western Australia.
There is an observatory down the the street at deerlick that does what you are suggesting. The mount is on a pier and the whole shed moves away . They have it set up like a large patio deck around the pier in the shape of an octagon. The shed moves from the center to one end. The doors open 270 degrees and fold against the shed. When it rolls back the doors are out of the way. It is really neat. I will try to get a video sometime to share.
@@AmyAstro When your video showed the surrounding area I was looking to see what other people had nearby. I could only see what looked like a raised deck - that looked neat. What a neat place to go and get some great ideas. Thanks again
Ding Dong that was an observation deck for group gathering. They have a Dob roll out of that mini building. They have scout groups come out for star gazing.
I need to see this place. I'm only 2 hours away!
Please stop by and say hello!
When are you going to build one in your backyard. 😁 Great video thanks for sharing. 👍
I need to move first. Too many trees around me that I don't own. Someday it will happen.
I so want an observatory but have been told it a no , which we have something like this in the UK so we could get a bit of land and put up a unit (super Jealous ) thanks for sharing Amy
I know the feeling. I hear No a lot. lol Oh well, I'm so happy this place is close enough to visit. Clear skies!
Nice, ...you can use one like that if you are member of the RAS (Riverside Astronomical Society) cheap with very nice people
So cool!
This is exactly the kind of ROR that I want to build on my property, especially with the fold-down Southern wall. Would you guestimate this structure would fit on a 2-car garage cement pad?
This building is 16x24, Backyard Observatories built it. Their club model. I hope to build the same thing someday.
How tall are your piers and where did you get them?
08:45 - is that an old school 8" Celestron Schmidt film camera sitting on the top shelf?
lol I will have to ask.
What, no towers of LED spotlights to light the place up? How will humans survive there? I guess the cars there have lights on the front of them. In Oklahoma the state and city don't seem to think cars have their own lights. I can't even hardly image in narrowband. It's nice observatory, it would be nice to have and the sky too.
Crazy to have a view like this.
At the end of the video, a sundial constructed of different height stones is shown. Why is the compass rose on the "ONE" stone instead of the "TWELVE"? Does it have to do with Daylight Saving Time?
All great questions. Let me find the footage where he explains the sundial.
Nothing wrong with it being your house.
