It’s only now that I realize Aragorn called out ‘Hold!!’ in Elvish because he believed that that arrow shot was so brilliant that only an Elf could have made it. That old Rohan archer should be proud!! I really hope the old boy survived when the enemy breached the walls.
@@dewaynerichardson5895 “I realise the [author] has made a decision but given that it’s a stupid-ass decision I’m electing to ignore it.” Yeah, the books involve heavy casualties and losses, don’t involve elves at Helm’s Deep and had a bigger cavalry charge out of the fortress. Must suck to be that first uruk-hai killed - Having walked for several days, marching to battle, only to be killed, before the fight even starts lol. Bummer.
yeah...you know each time I watch this I'm reminded of that one photo of a soldier who got gunned on in Normandy by the nazis before even being able to get out of the amphibious boat...really sad...
My favorite thing about this battle is that Aragorn, a Man, is commanding an Elvish unit. He’s such a highly respected warrior and leader that his authority crosses racial and national boundaries.
he was raised in rivendell, he was also dunedain, and he was the heir of isildur. plus those elves were sent by elrond and galadriel. they were also led by haldir, someone who knew aragorn very well.
Hell even the 1 minute of action in the clip was better than the entire battle of winterfell. Clearly the GOT directors had no idea what they were doing
This is why the Hobbit will never be as good of a trilogy as LOTR, the unplanned stuff real people do beat the stale battlescenes in the Hobbit. especially with BOT5A
2:25 when it cuts from the women and children to outside with them chanting always gives me chills, such brilliant directing. These two shots made this simply terrifying
The way the sound of chanting changes with the shots is also really effective. Introduce the new element while viewing frightened people's reaction in the caves then get the full force when the shot goes back outside.
I have the same complaint with this scene as I have with Game of Thrones' handling of the Ygritte battle scenes. There should have been a lot more women armed and fighting. Men might die during and after a battle, but they die cleanly and quickly. We women have a LOT more to lose. Under the circumstances, I sure as hell wouldn't have been cowering down in the deep.
@@pricklypear7516 Historically speaking, women would certainly not just wait in some cave or whatever. They weren't really expected to fight (although there are documented cases of women taking up arms and do it anyway, most famously Jeanne Laisné), but in such a situation where you are under siege and the worst will happen if you lose, they would certainly help in every way they could, bringing arrows to archers, extinguish fires, cook water (or nasty things like urine) to pour it on enemies from the walls, treat the wounded ect. .
If you watch the BTS, they actually do use lots of real stunt men for the battles. However, Peter had no time due to the studio to blend it well enough with the cgi ones. The Hobbit being bad wasn’t Peters fault at all, it’s the studio that wanted him to pump out 3 movies in 3 years. Go watch the BTS because he’s a nervous and depressed wreck in them. He at least had 3 years of pre-production with LOTR, while the Hobbit had maybe a year and a few months.
Don't get me wrong, the battle of Helms Deep is outright amazing and better. But the Battle of Winterfell wasn't THAT bad. Not that well written but considering that it's just a TV show instead of a movie, it's not too shabby tbh.
@@jasonsantos6430 Battle of Winterfell was literally the FOCUS of S8 according to the writers. They took an EXTRA year to film S8 just for the Battle of Winterfell. They had a HIGHER BUDGET and better gear and equipment to make the battle. Yet you got a piss poor pile of dogshit considering all of that effort that was put in, the writers said it would be better than helms deep. It's not even comparable. To be fair it's not really all about the cinematics, it was alright but the writing is what really killed the battle of winterfell.
THIS is how you do a movie battle. Beautifully shot, beautifully edited. Masterful film-making. The Battle of Winterfell has absolutely nothing on this
shame on us to believe in theme isn't it ?, anyway never trust a showrunner or producer that's their job to convince us to watch their show, is not a justification but if you go with low expectations good things will happen. Of course i was not expecting something as LOTR but i didn't feel disappointed.
I was around 10 years old the first movie came out so I could have seen it in theaters but we were poor and my parents thought movie tickets were a waste of money... I did grow up watching them on DVD and TV though and rewatch them once a year... the greatest trilogy of films ever made
Random old conscripted dude accidentally lets go of string and manages to hit Orc squarely in armor's weak spot. Legolas master bow elf fails to kill lightly armored olympic torch bearer running in straight line on cleared path
RuizDream Considering he can perfectly snipe wargs from super far away I would say the running dude that was right below him at the wall should be a walk in the park.
2:40 There Bob was, cheering with the rest of us, having the time of his life. We thought it would last forever. Then the arrow came. It came without warning. We watched Bob fall. Everyone fell silent, smitten with shock and utter horror. One moment he was there, then he was gone...gone forever. Then the shouting started. Uruk-hai started shouting Bob's name at the top of their lungs. Rage overtook us in an instant. It was in this moment that Chad (the dude on the rock) raised his sword and screamed into the rain. It was a cry that would forever be remembered among the Uruk-hai. It was a shout full of pain, sorrow and unquenchable rage. "FOR BOB!!!"
I love how the Uruks first action when arriving is to unnerve the enemy before attacking, hence they spend a good minute making as much noise as possible to both hype themselves and scare the ever living daylights out of Grandpa
I never thought of it like that. I just thought they were just doing it for celebration the march was over or To begin the assault with a burst of energy. But to scare and unnerve the Defendants is deffinately something i would have never have thought myself thank you!
The stamping was actually unintended.. The extras playing the uruk hai were bored of standing and some started to pound the spears and the others followed.. Peter thought it was excellent and adopted it..
@Winterhascome Not it wasn't, there are constantly shots of 10's of zombies surrounded 1 or 2 people just to cut away and cut back later and there's no zombies there now.
I remember walking around the mall with my family and the Best Buy playing this on their biggest tv; there were dozens of people that stopped just to watch this one part.
Same I was like 9 years old and the DVDS were out so I sat there and watched the movie on the Walmart Supercenter big screen TV in the electronics area. There was adults and kids just sitting there I spent 40 minutes maybe an hour watching it then it was time to go.
This has to be the most terrifying build-up scene to a battle in the history of movies. I remember sitting in the theater watching this, shivering with terror right along with those women and children huddled underneath Helm's Deep. The whole scene is an absolute masterpiece of fear and suspense. Magnificent.
Except I hated the joking that had to always take place between the dwarf and the elf. It was not in the book - just added for the Disney effect. It took some of the tension, awe and majesticness out of this (and other) scenes. But that's really the only complaint I have about these great movies.
What I love about this scene is the fact Aragorn is leading the Elven army. They were lead to Helms Deep by Haldir, he would be the equivalent to a commander or general in ranks of men. Even Legolas an Elvish Prince son of King Thranduil they do not follow. They follow Aragorn just out of the sheer respect they must have for the man, earned through tales and feats in war. Of course he grew up in Rivendell so some of the elves probably know him too. But from a military point they know they follow the true High King of Gondor, Isildurs heir, Elessar himself. What a moment.

i dont know man.. its so hard to watch, no realism, no passion, all cgi bs.. the original felt real, they can do movies like tht but people are getting dumber and more accpetable and shitty movies like hobbit are actually enjoyed by the mass general public.
It’s the details I appreciate more as I get older. The Uruks send their berserkers up with the ladders because their unarmored and less likely to get pulled down by gravity. Likewise they clear a space, intimidate the enemy, and interrupt the constant stream of arrows that were decimating their front lines. Also, it may just be me overthinking it, but I expect they had the ladder furthest toward the Hornburg rising first because there’s a spot where the line of archers is interrupted by the sudden height change in the wall. Or because that’s closest to where the Men, lesser skilled in archery, are stationed.
This is the gold standard of fantasy battle scenes. The set up to it, The music, the lighting, the dialog, the archers, the sword fighting, the climax and Gandalf at the end. They set the bar really high on this one.

ian maclean No it's fact, here is more: During the long nightshoot at Helm's Deep, the Orcs had to find ways to entertain themselves. Sala Baker comments, "We had about 60 guys singing in the middle of the night-- singing and waiting for the next shot. It was really cool. The crew would join in.. it was a way to keep ourselves amused. The guitar would come out, and all those Uruk-hai and beserkers sat around jamming! Billy Boyd also says, "To keep up morale, they would bring a band in-- a string quartet or something-- during lunch. It was nice. One day, they brought this jazz band in, and someone in full Uruk-hai costume started dancing. I remember thinking that was quite bizarre. You never really sat with the Uruk-hai, even at lunch! I love how the armor and weapons the Uruk-hai use reflects the new industrial nature of Isengard. They look mass produced and simple. But for the Elves and Rohan soldiers you can tell their armor and weapons were produced by skilled craftsman and blacksmiths and appear ornate as well.
Tolkien was a critic of the factory system and the effect that mass industrialization had on the countryside. His invention of Isengard was a clear example of this.
We're a lucky generation to have experienced that trilogy in theaters, and I remember the endless arguments at school about what will the extra scenes be in the extended editions. Good times. +Jay H Thing is though, they probably should have started shooting earlier. They would have taken out way more Orcs before the walls were breached. Granted with their superior numbers, the Orcs were bound to win if Gandalf & the Rohirrim didn't arrive.
Rohan has rewritten history, the truth is: The Uruks were there to sing some carols, however, being unappreciative of Uruk singing, they Rohan dishonorably killed one of the merry singers. The Uruks then decided to share their culture more aggressively.
The thing that really hits home for me are the scenes with the teenagers and elderly men being suited up with armor and given swords, basically being drafted because they needed all the men they could get. The women and children cowering in the safehold below. This reflects real historical events.

The gut wrenching build up to the first arrow being fired then all hell breaks loose. Best battle sequence in cinema history, perfectly paced and perfectly filmed.
I think it was great up to season 3 or 4. I didn't watch it all. I have no problem with dragons and the army of zombies, I think that was all fine. But I'm bothered with little things. Like when Wildlings stormed The Wall. They released the barrels on Wildlings. Why did they just watch Mammoth tear the gates off? Surely they could have another set ready, with all the time they spent there. That defence sucked...... among other ones. And you have Dothraki riders slaughtered at Winterfell, but I guess not, since they celebrated the massacre of Kings Landing.
This scene pretty much makes the movie series. I am dead serious. I love the angles, the portrayals, the emotions, just everything. This was the transition from Fellowship to Return of the King. This illustrated the stakes and the war at the time. And to think there was another movie/chapter to go after this... Just wow. Goosebumps forever.
MY PLANS FOR AN IMPREGNABLE MOUNTAIN FORTRESS 1. I will not build a solid stone ramp right the way up to my main gate. This would render pointless my going to all the trouble of building a castle on the side of a mountain. 2. I will dig a ditch in front of the fortress, so that my enemies will have a tough time advancing. 3. I will invest in this new "moat" technology, as I have great faith in it. 4. I will put crenellations on top of my battlements, so that my archers have somewhere to hide while loading their bows. 5. I will put a bannister rail along the back of my battlements, so that I do not suffer many needless casualties from men falling off the wall. 6. I will install a drawbridge. I am convinced that this will help. 7. I will make my sally-port more substantial than a simple wooden door, and will locate it where it leads somewhere useful, rather than straight onto an isolated ledge. 8. Should I sally out from my fortress, I will take care not to start a charge while still inside a room in my keep, especially if I am on horseback. This will avoid sudden embarrassing congestion in the doorway. 9. I will place the mouthpiece of my signalling horn at a height convenient for a human blower, and not a dwarf. 10. Should my fortress be attacked, I will not defend it by putting my two best men alone on the outside amongst the mass of the enemy. 11. When I order my archers to draw bows, I will not wait for ages before giving the order to loose, because that would tire their arms out needlessly. 12. When I do give the order to loose, I will shout "loose", perhaps "release", or even "shoot". I will not shout "fire" as this will just confuse the men who are not armed with firearms. 13. I will build a curtain wall, and I will place it somewhere where it actually defends something useful, like the main keep. I will not place it off to one side of the keep, where it defends nothing more than a little muddy cul-de-sac. My enemies cannot be relied upon to waste their men attacking a useless structure. 14. I will make my main gate very strong, because there is a chance that my enemies might try hitting it with something like a battering ram. I will do this long in advance of a siege, and not leave it to the last possible minute. 15. Behind my main gate, I will place a port-cullis. This will make it very hard for enemies to enter. 16. Behind my port cullis, I will build many arrow slits either side of the path through the bastion, so that any enemies getting past the port cullis will be shot at from both sides. 17. In the floor of the bastion tower, I will put many murder holes, so that rocks and boiling water can be poured down onto anyone who gets past the port cullis. 18. I will place a second port cullis, and perhaps a second gate at the back of the bastion, so that any enemies who get through the first port cullis will be trapped in the bastion, while falling prey to 16, and 17 (above). 19. I will pick a location for my fortress that cannot be cut off easily. A poor location would be at the head of a very steep-sided narrow valley. 20. I will place my fortress where the enemy cannot climb up and rain rocks down on top of it from the mountain above.
+Nefus1988 And I, general of the attack army, will just starve you out by cutting off all your supply lines. This is how sieges usually went in history.
The Uruks came to make peace. The brought the traditional Uruk gifts of peacemaking (overly large spears), wore their finest ceremonial armor, and even thought to bring fire to their new friends so that they can warm up and dry off once the rain finished. I mean damn, they even brought ladders to get to the hard to reach places in Helms Deep (It's all walls and shit after all) to help with repairs and decoration. So thoughtful. Then that vicious old man struck down an innocent Uruk and doomed Middle Earth to years of war. That bastard.
Actually they were just knocking. See their boots were all muddy because of the long, arduous march in the rain and they were worried about getting things dirty. So they just stood back and pounded their spears rather than leave muddy tracks up the causeway and by the door. So polite.
As a kid, I always wondered why Aragorn was so angry for that early shot being fired (after all, it was a great shot), but then I realized that the entire point of this "battle" was never to win. It was all about perseverance, banking on Gandalf fulfilling his promise at "first light." In firing that early shot, that man shortened the delay of the enemy's advance. Every second of delay in the enemy's attack was less lives they would potentially lose, so causing the enemy's immediate action would cost them dearly (and even jeopardize their survival altogether).
I absolutely love that the spear-stomping was a between scenes improvasation by the Uruk-Hai stunt team to intimidate the "star actors" and it made it into the film after everyone LOVED it. :)
And we could actually see this one. Imagine that. I got a migraine last night, even though it was still a great scene. Peter Jackson is the GOAT and this battle will never be topped ever, IMO.
See how strategical the uruk-hai army is, sending first the uruk-hai berserkers as initiators to establish footholds before the main bulk of the army ascends the ladders
Soldier in Winterfell: i like this place, it has good solid rock. Random voiceover: good rock that we will not being using for cover (Credit to Ralph Bakshi's poor adaptation & the Nostalgia Critic when he compared these two films back when he was actually entertaining)
I remember being frightened as a child when I first saw this scene. The tension, the horror...truly magnificent. Even now I feel some chills re-watching it. I can't say the same about The Battle of Winterfell, which everyone was waiting for and it should've been the high peak of the show. Battle of Helm remains the greatest battle of all times.
I legit thought they'd all die, or at least the way the sequence is shot makes you genuinely feel the horror of the situation that the defenders would have felt. Like, y'all are literally bout to die by orcs storming in and invading your castle. Shit legit terrified me, it was one of the first moments I can remember where I actually had a sense of dread. The movies were fucking perfect
Imagine being that one Uruk, born just days ago, armoured, and sent to Helms deep with the promise of victory and the taste of man-flesh, only to fall by a stray arrow before the fighting even starts while you're still getting hyped up.
This is how a nighttime battle should be done. It's dark but COMPLETELY visible. I love Game of Thrones but they have to learn this lesson. EDIT: I take it back. What the fuck happened.
Tbh the battle with the wildlings and giants and mammoths was probably their biggest battle and they did not disappoint, I think that they raised the bar so high that they couldn't even compete with themselves
Just pondering the logistics of this scene; there were three hundred men in Helms Deep, plus another three hundred elves led by Haldir. In medieval England, most archers were able to shoot their bows around six times a minute, or an arrow every ten seconds. Some of the Rohan defenders wouldn't be quite as capable as that, but let's assume the proficiency of the elves makes up for their shortcomings. That currently means there are 3'600 arrows flying loose from the walls of Helms Deep every minute, or 21'600 arrows every hour. The main portion of the shooting lasts from around midnight to the point when the wall is breached, at say 3 in the morning. That means, allowing for casualties and those who continued shooting after the body of fighting fell to swords, that somewhere in the region of 64'800 arrows were shot from Helms Deep. TL;DR; Holy shit, that was a lot of arrows.
+Zombiewithabowtie And some poor soul has to account for them. What, do you think arrows grow on trees? OK, they do partially; but there's more to an arrow than just the shaft-no, I didn't mean it that way!
Man, you really had to see this at the cinemas back in 2002. I loved all three films, but there was something about the Battle of Helms Deep on the big screen; the rain and thunder, the chanting Uruk-Hai, the mothers clutching their children in the caves, while the defenders above ground were soaked to the bone, their courage wilting.

My favorite thing about this battle is that Aragorn, a Man, is commanding an Elvish unit. He’s such a highly respected warrior and leader that his authority crosses racial and national boundaries.
i think it has something to do with that he is a Dunedain.
he was raised in rivendell, he was also dunedain, and he was the heir of isildur. plus those elves were sent by elrond and galadriel. they were also led by haldir, someone who knew aragorn very well.

Setting the stakes one last time to remind you that if our heroes fail, all those women and children will be brutally murdered by monsters
Eh not for me. That quick exposure does nothing for me.
They weren't really expected to fight (although there are documented cases of women taking up arms and do it anyway, most famously Jeanne Laisné), but in such a situation where you are under siege and the worst will happen if you lose, they would certainly help in every way they could, bringing arrows to archers, extinguish fires, cook water (or nasty things like urine) to pour it on enemies from the walls, treat the wounded ect. .
The orcs were so much more fearsome and realistic without all that CGI crap they used in the Hobbits. I like the old way so much more.
The Bengal cool story bro
+Alexandru This is the "old way." The op was referring to the fact that in the Hobbit trilogy most of the orcs are CGI instead of actors in costume.
The Hobbit used costumes too
Cgi is cheap. Profit rules all

You can actually see the ladders get set up on the deeping wall where the elves were not the horn burg it self
Uruks had no idea Elves would be joining men, so this logic is slightly flawed,

@@СнежныйДжониUnrealistic? They literally won Lmao
I swear he got me sooooo hyped for this fight 😊
Unrealistic. They should have almost no archers on the wall and parked the army infront of the wall.
agreed, and they should build some catapults and put them in front of the army, and build some trenches and stay in front of it
Game of thrones sucks.
Park your army in front of an army of pikemen? You'd lose your army.
Your "opinion" is unrealistic
@daylon he is joking. He was talking about a show called game of thrones where they did that. It looked pretty stupid.
This is what real battle strategy looks like. Why charge an enemy you can't see when you have walls you can use.
Especially when said enemy doesn't have ladders like the Uruk-hai.
@@SevereArtisan Exactly
@sinkingships offools They could have done real damage if they'd stayed in the walls, hit them with oil and rock and arrows. Plus they had dragons. Air sweeps with fire wherever the swarming of the wights got too much. And the walkers didn't even join the fight so no danger to the dragons from ice spears. The NK stayed in the blizzard to maintain it so he was no active threat at least in the beginning. So many ways this could have gone well.
@sinkingships offools guys even tho s7 wasnt great I think got ended there at the ending. Either everyone died or beat the night king to your imagination

@@random4115 Yes, really. I twas spontaneous. The Uruk-Hai actors just started doing it of their own accord and the director and his colleagues really liked the idea. You can confrim this for yourself if you simply search for the behind the scenes documentary of The Two Towers or the Battle of Helms Deep.
The gut wrenching build up to the first arrow being fired then all hell breaks loose.
Best battle sequence in cinema history, perfectly paced and perfectly filmed.
Dude imagine people comparing GOT 8x3 to this... I love GOT but can't even come close to this masterpiece!
Still way better than the so called "Great Battle" of Winterfell we got.
The Battle of the Bastards was dope, sad they now make poop

@Andreas U. Hard agree.
MY PLANS FOR AN IMPREGNABLE MOUNTAIN FORTRESS
+Nefus1988 A perfect fortress! I'm willing to serve you.
NickBlooddrunk I copied that text from Lindybiege from his website where he writes about Lord of the Rings
+Nefus1988 And I, general of the attack army, will just starve you out by cutting off all your supply lines. This is how sieges usually went in history.
Mate, what about the chance of a full scale siege, your enemies could just wait you out and starve you.
Just look up Festung Hohensalzburg, it's the perfect fortress.

No. Helms Deep > Anything and Everything Else > Battle of Winterfell
That bastard.
ayparillo That was a traditional greeting dance routine they were doing right?
Actually they were just knocking. See their boots were all muddy because of the long, arduous march in the rain and they were worried about getting things dirty. So they just stood back and pounded their spears rather than leave muddy tracks up the causeway and by the door. So polite.
ayparillo I thought they were setting a beat for the people of Helm's Deep to join in and make music together.
Is that you, CNN?
Rest in piece Bruce Allpress, the actor who played the old man who released his shot early.

Game of Thrones doesn't ask for a place. It takes what is his.

Without LOTR there would be no GOT. It's that simple.
"Shame. Shame. Shame." U have no idea how stupid is ur comment. "Game of Thrones" is 4 adults and "Lord of the Rings" is 4 children.
Not even modern day battles in movies can top the battles of LOTR. Incredible.
+Provocateur you're not special
VideoSmarts1 Yeah but at least he lives up to his name...
Great insight
Great shot old man! Now do that exact same thing 9,999 more times
He would probably run out of arrows 😂
Aragon's mind-"What idiot fired" Old man's mind-" Oh f$&@ me"
He looked so panic when he shoot the arrow
mvp in my opinion hah
Because as we all know people in the lord of the rings are telepathically linked.
I absolutely love that the spear-stomping was a between scenes improvasation by the Uruk-Hai stunt team to intimidate the "star actors" and it made it into the film after everyone LOVED it. :)
3:40 - 3:47 Still the single greatest thing I've watched in a battle movie or TV series battle. That aggressive command from Aragorn... Goosebumps!!

They called it a big fight but I saw nothing just like Jon snow knows nofing
Notice the amount of dedication they gave to archers... why not at Winterfell
See how strategical the uruk-hai army is, sending first the uruk-hai berserkers as initiators to establish footholds before the main bulk of the army ascends the ladders
FreedomFighter08 i don't think they came up with that themselves probably saruman communicating orders with some kind of spell
This battle scene to this day is still legendary. Long live the Lotr legacy.

Amazing how they made 300 angry New Zealanders look like 10,000 Uruks...
Cgi done right
The Persians felt similar way if you know what I mean.
The orcs stamping their spears on the ground. Was that orc haka? lol
No time left for learning
Its the final season lmao what do u mean learn.
McZalion I mean for the next project D&D decides to butcher after this. This show is sadly not recovering
Yeah GoT is over man, they soiled it.

@@minutemengeneral1324 everywhere
Tbh the battle with the wildlings and giants and mammoths was probably their biggest battle and they did not disappoint, I think that they raised the bar so high that they couldn't even compete with themselves
Don’t forget the battle at plennor fields and minas tirth
Just pondering the logistics of this scene;
there were three hundred men in Helms Deep, plus another three hundred elves led by Haldir.
+Zombiewithabowtie They would run out of arrows.
you should suggest a theory suggestion for the film theorist lol
Don't forgot, the top portion of the wall stopped firing arrows once ladders were in play

UNARMED BLACK URUK HAI KILLED BY ROHIRRIM
Helms Deep, Middle Earth, Third Age of men
A middle earth community is outraged after they say an unarmed Uruk Hai was shot and killed by Rohan police. Rohan police chief Theoden says the events started around 10pm when they say young Uruk teen Azog tresspassed into Helms deep along with 10,000 of his friends with the intent to pillage this quiet little community. A yet to be identified officer shot Azog in the neck after he pulled a spear on them which was later found at the scene.
Fellow Uruk Hais, however, tell a different story.
"He had his hands up! He was getting ready to surrender! "One berserker adds
Azog's family is in mourning and disbelief in what they call the murder of their son. " He was a good boy! Getting ready to turn his life around and and get a job in Minas Mogul. He didn't do nuffin! "
Meanwhile, Uruk Hai rights activist Sauron made these statements today out of a press conference in Mordor." how long are they gonna keep killing and oppressing unlike this!? Men and Elves of middle earth are prejudiced towards young black Uruk!" #UrukHailivesmatter
Protests have begun to emerge just outside of Gondor.
