They truly are handy! Knowing how to make them also makes you feel less precious about them so that they get used. There's a complete series here on how to make John Dog's basket so if you feel like a weekend project, it's waiting for you :)
Wow thank you, now I can make one for myself finally! I think soaking the weaves in water beforehand makes them more flexible a workable. But that’s just my theory.
You only need to soak willow that's been dried out beforehand. John Dog is working with freshly harvested willow here, which does shrink a bit but is very pliable and easy to work with.
This has been really useful to see - we had a one-session hedgerow basket weaving workshop last week and I was keen to finish off the edge and insert a handle before this afternoon's (non-workshop) session. It would have been even more useful if the camera hadn't pulled back on the detail of inserting the cut ends into the edge on the 2nd round; it might make for a more interesting angle to pull back from time to time, but bearing in mind this is supposed to be an instructional video, more close-ups of the hands at work would have served the purpose better. Having replayed the clip several times, fortunately I think I know what to do!
This. Is. Incredible!
So thankful he was willing to share his knowledge!
I love this man he is oh so amazing. Very thankful for y’all teaching this is such a blessing
I would love to relearn this. We made our own baskets years ago in New Zealand when I was young. It's a lovely art. They are so handy to have.

Mil gracias por sus enseñanzas desde Cusco Perú.
My wife was big into baskets as a hobby. Her two favorites were old egg baskets and Nantucket baskets
