Another charming performance. It's hard to fault his charm, stage presence, and ability to "sell" a song.
Voice production may not be 100%, but then whose is? I've heard a lot worse Italian diction than his.
I actually don’t have a problem with his Italian diction. More concerned with the fact the placement of his voice is a bit towards the back to the point that the orchestra swallows him up. But a very wonderful rendition of one of my favourite arias.

Excellent technique, and he doesn't suffer from the shaking jaw syndrome of so many of current crop of singers, who look like they're chewing whenever they sustain a note. The voice is attractive, but lacking the Italianate "ping" and squillo, but Italianate ping seems to be something that has pretty much disappeared.

also agree, he sing "nice" and he knows what he is doing, controlled tones. This music doesn't belong to the way he is singing, the orchestra nearly "eats" him. The so called squillo would come more looseness. Or perhaps he was rather nervous that he switch to emergency program.

A good instrument- equipment is there.
But I must ask- why do coaches and conductors always insist upon over complicatong every damn syllable? He has clearly been coached to cresc. and dim. in ever note in the opening phrase. Why? Who knows.
He has probably not studied a Latin language, and most likely has little to no feel for the words and diction.

Yes, I agree with everybody here, the voice is mostly --but not all--in the throat ("Voce Ingolata" = "Voice In Throat"). There is a strange "echo quality" to the voice. At any rate it's not front and center where it should be. However, it doesn't sound to be as complete a voce In gola (as it is spoken in everyday Italian) as for instance Kauffman or Giacomini. So what is different here? I think this is what is known as a "knodel." A knodel is quite similar to a typical voce in gola, however the reason behind it is a little different. For instance, Kauffman is pushing the back of his tongue down onto his hyoid bone, which in turn is artificially keeping his larynx forced down beyond its normal resting place. For a wonderful example of this watch Kauffman sing "Vesti La Giubba". Normally, when using proper technique the tongue will be arched slightly up in the back of the mouth, allowing the sound to come up and over the arch, and out of the mouth on the other side. However, when Kauffman is singing you will see his tongue flattened out in the back of his mouth (instead of arched, like Di Stefano or Corelli or Del Monaco, etc.). Again, watch Kauffman sing "Vesti La Giubba" and you will see this so clearly. The reason singers do this is because they want more "scuro"--or "darkness"--in their voices, and for whatever reason they feel that they're not getting it from their vocal folds, where it really should be coming from. So, using the back of their tongue to push on the hyoid bone, they push the larynx down beyond where it should normally be in order to get a sort of fake "darkness" added to the voice, which then becomes trapped in the throat. /// Now, back to "knodel." A knodel happens when the back of the tongue is pushing down on the hyoid bone, thereby pushing down on the larynx. However, the problem is, instead of trying to keep the larynx artificially depressed in order to get that fake "darkness" sound, the knodel is occurring because the singer is not completely shifting the back of the tongue up and forward as he should be. So the result is there is still a partial to significant voce in gola, which is what I think is occurring here (because it only sounds partial, and not so complete like Kauffman’s). /// For whatever reason, allowing a voce in gola to remain is the equivalent of a singer making a deal with the Devil. It will only lead to much thornier problems and issues; most likely sooner rather than later, though some singers still manage to make a living with it, and some listeners seem to be enthralled with it. The immediate problem is the squiilo/formant/brilliance/brightness/"chiaro" of the voice is seriously affected. The knodel inhibits the aryepiglottic fold from narrowing and straightening completely. It is this action of the aryepiglottic fold that gets you your squiilo. The higher you go in your range, the narrower and straighter your AF needs to be. /// If you listen carefully to Long Long, you will hear him completely drowned out by the orchestra on the higher notes--you can't hear him at all. Even if he was shouting you might still not be able to hear him. It's not about shouting at this point, it's about squillo and formant. He needs the brilliance of “chiaro” to cut through the orchestral overlay. For a comparison, choose any "Che Gelida Manina" by Enrico Caruso. He has the most exquisite squillo of any singer I have ever heard in my life. Listen carefully as he sings the aria and compare the clarity and brilliance of his high notes to Long Long. This is a voice that will cut through the sound of ANY orchestra. Be advised, almost all of Caruso’s Che Gelidas are sung a half-step down, so he will be hitting the B-natural instead of the C. But no matter. Just listen and compare. /// To understand the true brilliance of Caruso’s squillo, listen to him sing the Italian canzone “Tu Ca Nun Chiagne”. This song is such a showcase for his incredible voice. Choose any version. Best is to choose an early, middle and later version. Try and decide which version you like better, if any! /// Yes, I am a singer. I practice virtually every day. There must always be a striving, a hunger to get better, a love of the art. Finally, I leave you with this thought: “Good voices are born; great voices are MADE, through careful cultivation and improvement of technique.”

@@yehan5132 Google "voce ingolata" and go to the RUclips posting by GermanOperaSinger. Listen carefully to the lesson he has posted. Long Long is singing in the throat. :( Also, read my analysis above in the reply to Mario Pietta. It is long, I know. But just be patient and read through it, if you want to improve your ear, and your analysis. :)
