convert an ugly building into a beautiful building with cord wood

- / pwvids Cordwood walls can be very striking. Wheaton Labs teaches others about firewood such as how wood doesn’t stack well when the lengths aren’t consistent. Using a measuring stick to size the wood the same length makes the stacking work better. In the winter, racks of cordwood offer protection for the lab cats above and below the racks. Cordwood stacked along the outer wall of the house can protect the outside from the elements by adding a layer of insulation and blocking wind and rain. The need for painting is eliminated with the cordwood covering the wall.
Traditional cordwood homes are pretty but take time to build. Using wood stacked neatly is a creative, and aesthetically pleasing, way to decorate the outside of your home with a wood facade.
Heating his home in Montana, Paul has used as little as .6 cords of wood during a mild winter even with a few aspects not well insulated. Insulation optimizations will only help use less wood to heat our homes. Uncle Mud suggests Paul say rocket mass heaters use half the wood of conventional heaters. While that may be true, Paul, being an engineer, wants to give the accurate figure of 1/10th the wood is used by RMHs. In fact, rocket mass heater wood feeds are very small so it would be difficult to use a lot of wood. Not to mention the fact that they would heat too much since they are super efficient heaters.
Cordwood walls are very handsome when they are full and filled with the same size pieces of wood so they can be stacked higher.
- Cordwood Wall: Cordwood stacked perfectly
- Different sized pieces stack poorly: Recutting to all one size to stack well
- Measuring stick: Easy way to make all cordwood same size
- Wood Rack: Space above with rocks below
- Cordwood side not paint: Cordwood protects siding instead of paint
- Outside of house look more like wood: Stacking cordwood on racks along side of house aesthetically pleasing
- Heat house with RMH: Use 1/10 the wood using a Rocket Mass Heater to heat home
- Cordwood wall: Looks best when full

Also, Paul going with the nerd glasses. Mad scientist vibes for sure!
my favorite safety glasses
What a deligthful video! So nice to see Paul talk about stuff happening at Wheaton Labs. The cordwood wall is indeed very beautiful.
Looks awesome and super handy. Just renovated my abandoned brick house in SE KY and it had termites so I won't be using this method on around my house at least not any time soon but absolutely love the idea for other people.
I love seeing an easy way to improve the aesthetics of the outside of my house!
It looks soooo lovely!! Very pleasing to the eye!!

It looks really, really good! And I love all the people!
I remember in a podcast about Rocket Ovens that a 4ftx4ftx4ft box fill of wood could fuel a rocket oven for a year. Looking over the cordwood wall my thought of pizza, pie and spaghetti pie (lasagna) were top of mind. A person could have each cord dedicated to a food. Like this is the pizza cord or this cord is for huckberry pie only.
Got the office looking good.
Great idea and great looking wall. Nicely done! Nothing crazy about staying warm with minimal wood if you have it figured out. Nice
It's a great idea to have all the firewood handy like that - you can see your stock at a glance. Not great in a wet climate unfortunately or I'd be copying the idea. I need a bigger overhang to keep the Skye rain off mine!
Beautiful and simple!
I've seen this method done with concrete in between the cord wood like bricks.Thoughts?
that is a cordwood house. And when the wood shrinks, the wind blows through.
@@paulwheaton oh okay. Thanks.
Makes more sense
It looks amazing. I wish I could do this. Unfortunately termites are a major problem here. I will just have to enjoy your. Thanks for sharing.
Do you think this would be viable outside of a mobile home? Also, love this video and thank you!
The building we are doing this with is a sort of garage - not a mobile home.
Hey Paul I just seen your video you thinned down some I like that wood wall it looks good
Yup, eating a lot of kale these days.
In my place ants will have a carnaval!
"Tap, tap, tap, tap"
so what are the dimensions of the pieces of wood ?
firewood needs to be 15 to 16 inches long.
Black paint would obscure the cheap siding, and make a building of so-so anesthetics disappear. Think I would paint the window trim white because the window frames are white, but maybe a third color could be introduced skillfully...
Where do you get the wood sliter
amzn.to/3VYodsr
I have one and love it. It makes cooking with my rocket oven easy.
It looks great, and I understand the insulation benefit but what about the following? At what point is it inefficient to try to keep the walls covered with wood? On one hand, RMH doesn't require a lot of wood, so is having this much at the ready useful considering the work it takes to prep it? On the other hand, depleting wood means a temporary loss of insulation and protection.
There is a rocket mass heater in the house, the library (this building) the solarium, the red cabin, the love shack, the wood shop, the classroom, the season extender, the bun warmer and the solar food dehydrator with rocket assist.
Nice but what about termites? You will have wood to burn in winter. I am also curious how long it will last as our cord wood start to deteriorate after a few years? Thank you for posting
I have never seen a termite in montana. I think stored like this it will last well over a decade.
If you have Muscovy ducks you will not have a termite or ant problem. It only takes a few to keep you place clear, they are no trouble and do not quack.
How many trees did it take to do that?
maybe eight? They were all dead.
waste of good wood, unless you burn it in the winter and then replace in the spring
That's exactly what they do at the labs, its stored firewood that serves as a temporary facade to then get replaced next year :)
Yes, none of this is wasted. Next year's wood is drying out on the other side of the building. You are looking at this winter's wood supply for three rocket mass heaters. We are using the wall as a place to store the firewood because it is pretty, conveniently close to where the wood will be burned, will be baked by the sun all summer and adds insulation and protection to the building.
Yay for kittens! Yes, I watch for kitten content.😊
Looks nice but it's going to be a huge haven for insects maybe ones you don't like like cockroaches or earwigs or wasps
been doing this for years and have yet to have a problem.
Cats help by killing bugs!
Seriously? HALF AN INCH too long?
