  • Hello Everyone, and welcome to my first Station visit of 2023 coming from Silecroft on the Cumbrian Coast Line. The station is located within the heart of the village and is a ’request stop’. Unlike the level crossing gates at Drigg and Bootle, the crossing at Silecroft has automatic barriers which are controlled by the adjacent signal box. The length of both platforms have been reduced to accommodate the 2 carriage Super Sprinter Class 156 DMU’s which operate passenger services on this line. The village is situated between the towns of Bootle and Millom and sits just within the Lake District National Park. It is also overlooked by Black Combe Fell Which from the top offers an excellent all-round panoramic view of land and sea (weather permitting!). My visit ended at Silecroft Beach which is popular with locals and day-trippers alike and contains an area which has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are views across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man as well as the Walney Offshore Wind Farm. Overall, I found the village very welcoming and the station itself was small and well presented with modern waiting shelters. The beach was expansive and extended on both sides as far as the eye could see. I hope you enjoy the video.

    Delightful!
I passed through Silecroft station in both directions yesterday but, having spent a bibulous afternoon with an old friend in Barrow, I slept through much of the return journey.
The Cumbrian Coast line has long been one of my favourite routes and I hope, one day before I finally become too old to manage it, to spend a week or so camping in that area (Ravenglass perhaps?) and filming those lovely old stations set in such magnificent surroundings.

Thank you Tim. I must confess to having a soft spot for this line and have recorded videos at several of the stations during the past year or so. These videos do not always get the most views on You Tube but just being at these stations along with the communities that surround them really lifts the spirits. Having been following your videos along the GSWL I am looking forward to exploring the line to the north of Dumfries where there is some spectacular scenery. I know the stretch between Gretna and Dumfries quite well but not beyond Dumfries so that is going to a priority for me over the coming months. Thanks and Best Wishes.
