- Edappalayam Watch Tower, Thekkady is one of the best forest stay program offered by Periyar Tiger Reserve, Kerala. Away from the work, city, crowd and all your busy schedules, in the middle of the forest, completely disconnected from the outer world, a peaceful stay with the nature. This will be amazing to have, one of the best ever experience i had. There is only one thing with you the silence of the jungle, no signals, no polutions, no human beings only animals around you.
There are many islands in the Thekkady lake which is actually the catchment area of the Mullaperiyar dam. Thekkady lake is formed by the Mullaperiyar dam, Mullaperiyar dam is in news now because of its dangerous condition, Thekkady is an artificial lake formed due to Mullaperiyar dam, Edappalayam watch tower is situated in one of these island.
Edappalayam watch tower is a stay over program in Thekkady which you can book from periyartigerreserve.org website. Only two people can avail this thekkady watch tower facility at a time, and the booking charge is 8000 Rupees for two people including 3 time food. 2 forest guides and an armed guard will accompany you throughout for this watch tower forest stay program. This Edappalayam watch tower program includes a morning short trekking as well.
Safe Forest stay or Jungle Stay is a dream for everyone, here is a chance to fulfill your dream of staying deep inside the Periyar Tiger reserve Forest Thekkady. This is suitable for Honeymoon couples and bachelors and ideal for nature lovers.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE
Day - 1:
Arrive at Thekkady and report at Tribal Heritage (TH) EDC Office at 02.00 PM. Upon taking entry tickets, you will be transferred to Boat landing by shuttle bus by our staff.On reaching boat landing, transfer to Edapalayam Jetty by boat. You will be guided to the watch tower by a short trek. Check in at the watch tower. Evening Tea, dinner and comfortable stay will be provided in the serene wilderness and will marks the end of first day.
Day - 2:
Early Moring the guide will take you for a short trek and birding. After the trek, breakfast will be provided. Rest of the time at leisure at the Tower. Check out after lunch. You will be dropped at boat landing by boat, from where you can board return bus.
Note:
Animals sightings are a matter of chance, be Patient
Please do not litter the surroundings
Treat the Tiger Reserve Area/wilderness area with respect.
Give way to animals first
Appreciate the colour and sounds of nature.
Dress in colours that blend with the natural environment.
Take pictures, but without disturbing wildlife.
Respect local customs.
Keep a reasonable distance from wild animals, and do not provoke them.
Dispose waste responsibly: carry back all non-biodegradable litter, and leave campsites litter-free before departing.
When in a vehicle, remember wild animals have right of way.
Keep to the speed limit, don’t use the horn, and do not startle animals.
Do not talk loudly or play loud music.
Do not get out of the vehicle or approach wild animals.
Do not approach animals closer than 15 m or disturb them while they are resting.
Do not take away flora and fauna in the form of cuttings, seeds or roots.
Do not feed wild animals.
Do not stop the vehicle not more than 5 minutes in the reserve
Do not light fires, or smoke inside protected areas. Accidental forest fires cause irreparable damage.
Carrying of guns, fire arms, inflammable materials are strictly prohibited, as per the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and is punishable by law.
Obey the instructions of staff and guides.
Rules:
Stay for 2 Adults at Edapalayam Watch Tower.
Evening Tea, Dinner, Breakfast and Lunch is included.
Bird watching and short trek
Two transfers by boat.
Park entry & bus charges will be extra

We went to this amazing place in 1997, no guards with guns, no toilet, just the basic tower, we stayed in that tower by ourselves and watched the wildlife, it was amazing, a bit dangerous but I wouldn't have missed it for the world, would love to go back again its been done up so nicely

1994ഇൽ ഇവിടെ honeymoonനു വന്ന് 1ദിവസം തമാസിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അന്ന് വല്ലപ്പോഴും വല്ല വിദേശികളും വന്നാൽ ആയി എന്ന അവസ്ഥ ആയിരുന്നു. Forest guard കൊണ്ടു വിട്ടിട്ടു പോകും. പിന്നെ next day കൊണ്ട് പോകാൻ വരും.
അന്ന് current ഇല്ലാ, toilet ഇല്ല, watchtowerനോട് ചേർന്ന് വേറെ construction ഒന്നും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.ഏഴു രൂപ ആയിരുന്നു ദിവസ വാടക എന്നാണ് ഓർമ്മ

Good video: I have stayed in the lake palace, but the watchtowers location is better than the resort since trees block your view on three sides of the lake palace and animal sighting is on the far shore. One correction in your description. The wound that you see on the sambar deer's throat is not a bug byte. It's a Sore Spot. It seems like a wound with blood oozing out, but it's not. It's a natural phenomenon in Sambar Deer which happens in both males and females during the mating season. The mating season heavily depends on the climatic factors, availability of food; thus, the period varies from place to place. Many world-acclaimed scientists have reported this from their field visits, but still, it's not clear why Sore Spot happens.
