    I assure you as an Australian, that after six months of travel all over the USA, the VAST MAJORITY of Americans can not tell the difference between an Australian accent and a British accent. This does NOT make them stupid. Most Americans are rarely exposed to both (esp Aussie accents) and therefore it's perfectly understandable that they struggle to tell the difference.
    If you frequently hear Aussie and British accents it's easy to tell. If you haven't, they can definitely sound similar.

    I find it very easy to tell the difference between Australian, British, Scottish, and Irish accents. I guess living in a city such as San Francisco, and it being such a melting pot made it easier to decipher the intonations of the speaker. I love the Australian people. They are very warm and easy to talk to and always interested in what you have to say. Something very interesting that I've noticed is that you can frequently tell if an American is black by his voice alone. But not if they're Australian. I've heard some young black Aussie guys in their early 20's who came here as refugee's from Africa in their teens without any English, and now they sound as Aussie as the next guy without a hint of their heritage.

    • @waynewalters426
      @waynewalters426 2 года назад

      Because in America sounding "normal" means sounding "white", God forbid. Whites, Asians, Indians, and most Latinos all sound pretty indistinguishable here; but like you said most blacks talk in ebonics or with some sort of twang from it. I don't know where you stand political but I think this is bad for establishing a nation identity, but great if you are a black Marxist. So imagine what even the media wants people to think about ebonics?

      There is a reason behind it also. So dont turn your nose up on your background and our culture. Remember the convicts hated the English and wanted nothing to do with them, so they didnt want to be associated with English even if most were Irish, lol. Also to stop the English Prison Guards from understanding them what they were saying. Another reason is to stop flies, dust etc going into your mouth when speaking. So hot here and to finish a sentence faster than you can say Cooweee. lol

    • @bloat1235
      @bloat1235 3 года назад

      @@Mav_F Do you have any studies or research to back that up? Also only about 20% of Australians have a convict ancestor so this idea of hating the English is very odd. English is also the largest ethnicity in Australia to this day. We have a sports rivalry and enjoy banter but the UK is probably Australia's closest country after NZ.
      The Australian accent(s) is commonly understood to have developed from an amalgamation of British accents, for example general and broad Australian have a lot of similarities and are often confused with Cockney and Estuary. Cultivated Australian, and perhaps people mainly from South Australia who pronounce words dance like "dahnce" can be seen to be much closer to modern RP English. Australian's also lack a rhotic r, which is common in America, Ireland and West England.
      The Australian accent did not develop due to a dislike of the English, otherwise we wouldn't sound so much like them, or the fact most Australians have English ancestry. The rest about prison guards and flies sounds like bollocks to be fair, but you might be joking.

    • @Mav_F
      @Mav_F 3 года назад

      @@bloat1235 The Aussie accent and slang came from the children of the convicts. Because the mixed nationalities etc and slang changed the accent to what the country Australians sound like, the true blue accent. Now our accents, are mixed with other cultures and aren't as strong but still noticeable. The Adelaide people do pronounce the words the proper British way. If you listen to anyone from Melbourne and Sydney they almost sound the same with a slightly different tone. You can hear it if you listen correctly. They say their words the same.
      There were a few documentaries on this many many years ago.
      It was the children who started the slang so the soldiers didn't understand what they were saying or referring to. The accent followed as they were from different backgrounds with different accents.
      Like today with so many different accents in Australia now, our accent is changing, mine has since I started working in the city.

    I'm American, and I know more about Australia and the Aussie accent than these people, despite the fact that I haven't visited there yet! I wonder if any Aussies say phrases like "Smashing baby!" Or "Bugger!" Here's one I came up with: Just a sec mate, I gotta bloody slam the loo! I've created an Aussie phrase saying "Hold on (or excuse me) man( or my friend or whatever), I gotta go to the bathroom really badly!" I wouldn't be surprised if they say this!

    I used to assume Austria was a short word for Australia and I thought Australian's geographical position was in Europe.

    Uh I think that's a bit of a generalisation. I'm Australian and not only have I been to America but I met some beautiful people who I'm still great friends with. There are as many people in Australia who dislike America as there are people in America who dislike Australians. The only people not worth the effort are the one's to generalise an entire country.

    Actually I am an Australian, it's just extremely hard to judge sarcasm in text since you can't convey tone in text. So no, not an American, and yes I get sarcasm, it just a little hard in to judge in text written by a person you've never met.

    To all the Australians saying Americans are ignorant. You fail to see that in north America we don't get to see any of your TV shows/media/news. However in Australia from what I've heard 90% of the media is american. So obviously you're going to know about America. The same way I can say you guys are ignorant about India. Can you differentiate between the south Asian accents? That's my point.

      Americans are ignorant as fuck. I went to visit and someone asked me if I was French.

      1) I actually have more knowledge about India than the people in this video did about Australia. Also, why India as an example? Is it because they are a different culture to you? How can that be used as a comparison to Australia when both Australia and America are Western. No culture differences.
      2) Knowing accents in your own language totally different to doing it in another. You would have to be a fluent speaker of the language in question. However in this case we both speak English so there wouldn't be a problem if you knew what you were looking for. But by giving Asia as a comparison, you are saying we are as foreign to you as they are. Which we are not.
      Now, a better example would be Scottish and Irish. Though that still wouldn't be affective because I can tell the difference, even though I don't hear it that often. Bad example. Although on that point I have about as much exposure to the Scottish in media as you do to Australia, yet I still make sure I have knowledge of them, so 'media exposure' can't be an excuse either.
      Again, I don't think you're a bad person for not knowing the difference between me and a cockney, I mean, I can't blame you we come from there. I don't even care if you don't know who the prime minister is. Even if I like to keep up to date with the goings-on of the world, you don't have to. It doesn't effect you so why bother. What isn't good is your attitude that 'It's not on tele so how am I meant to know about it?' Dude, you have so many resources at your disposal to find out so much information. Even if you don't know the difference between Australia and New Zealand, or that Tasmania actually exists, or how we speak. I don't care. Just don't go saying it's not your fault you're ignorant to geography out side of America, because you have ample opportunity to do so if you wish.
      Sorry for being so harsh Yalus, I just don't like it when people blame their ignorance on 'forces they can't control' when they can just do a little Google and BAM. Knowledge that ain't TV. Fascinating.
      That, my friends, is my point.

      Oh my god that episode. It was sooooo bad and not even funny. Just stereotypes that I had never even heard of. But, it's the Simpsons. They do that do everything, shouldn't get to worried about.

      What about the news? is there never ever anything about what happens in Australia or other countries?
      In Australia we are exposed to a lot of american tv shows and I can imagine there would be no Australian shows in America, there's barley any on our own tv. I could count on my fingers the amount of aussies shows lol! But we do hear and have news reports about america and other countries. Personally, I think it's a good thing to know whats happening around the world, even if we are so isolated.
      When I visited California, I was generally shocked at how little people knew about Australia and I know it's not all, people cannot be fixed into a box, but every single person I talked to about Australia literally knew nothing. Hadn't even heard of Sydney or Melbourne. I got asked questions if I we have the internet here (pretty sure were taking the piss, still-annoying) . People would say oh I would love to visit Australia, so I would ask what they knew about Australia and nothing!
      Americans always ask me when I'm coming to visit, but not often do I hear them saying they want to visit Australia. Not once at all have I met an American who knows anything about Australia. To me as an outside perspective looking in from what I have experienced it just seems like American generally don't know much about whats outside their country or care at all. (Said with no hostile)
