Anything about York Minster? What happened to all the people in the North who were executed..women, men, children in the Pilgrimage of Grace. Were they taken down and buried or just hung.
It was a flash of brilliance to convert to an open area after the tower collapsed. It's lovely. Fascinating as well to see the terracotta artistry. Thanks for the tour!
"A phalanx of putti". 🔥. Adding this to my 'someday I'll use that' file. Can't imagine what that situation will be, but I'll be ready when the opportunity presents itself.
I love that they left the knave in ruins. It adds so much character to the building, struck by lightening (!). The Bedingfields chapel is beautiful; the colours of the fading terracotta are gorgeous. A beautiful church. Thanks for sharing.
I love your church tours, Allan. This one is stunning, and so wonderful that a chancel now serves as the parish church. No doubt the entire building had been splendid!
What a lovely building this is, and I do like what they did after the tower collapsed. It feel very special to stand there. The terracotta work is quite amazing, I am surprised it has lasted so well. Thank you for another fascinating video - I just wish it was longer!
I’ve been a US subscribe of the magazine for a few months now. I can tell you, you will get a true labor of love from Allan. High quality, well written, and fascinating. If you’re on the fence, hop in. Thank you Allen, when I see the envelope in the mailbox I know I’m in for an enjoyable evening.
Ever the optimist, I cannot help but think that the spire and tower collapse were fortuitous, both in missing the most interesting and important parts of the church and in forcing alterations that are probabably more practical nowadays than would have been the complete church. Many thanks for yet another fascinating episode, and a very Happy Christmas from Oxford!
What a stunning and decorative church in Oxborough! Certainly the Victorians were sometimes known for their shoddy constructions. Fortunately this church has survived and the grass feature is a nice touch. The terracotta is so unusual and striking. Thanks so much for this and all the rambles of 2023. Wishing you and your family many blessings at Christmas and always Allan. I look forward to more fascinating insights in 2024!
As usual, you did a splendid job on this feature. I hope you and your family have a happy holiday and each of us have a healthy and prosperous new year.
I have always enjoyed your presentations. They are incitefull, interesting, and quick paced. Recently, I have watched a few other "church bloggers ", and honestly, they cannot hold a candle to your presentations. Thank you for continuing your seminars. I look forward to visiting ancient country churches when I visit my cousin in Chesham. Mike
🎄 Happy Holidays to you & your family, Allan. Thank you for the past year of wonderfully narrated historical vlogs. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your impressive archive of videos over the last few months. Best Regards, Pat- Canada
Hi Allan! I'm not sure how, but I missed this one when it first came out. The terracotta artwork is stunning! I just received my physical copy of the Antiquary today. I agree with your good wife regarding the colourfulness of this issue. Anyone who enjoys your channel will adore the magazine. I highly recommend it.
Another fascinating video, Allan - these tombs remind me of the magnificent tomb of the duke of Norfolk at Framlingham. If anything, the duke's tomb is even more splendid than the Bedingfield tombs. Thank you, Allan.
Merry Christmas Allan to you and your family. Your videos are so enjoyable and we always learn so much. Just one request, next year, start moving your visits West (and South), East England is just that bit too far. I managed to get to Cleeve Abbey after watching your video, wonderful place (and there were no unexpected doors slamming thankfully).
Merry Christmas from Alabama, USA! Thank you for brightening up a somewhat dreary day in the south. Always interesting and informative. I look forward to your church visits. Enjoy the holidays with your family.😊
Can I ask for a look at the interesting little church of St Helens in Churchtown near Preston Lancashire. Just off the A6. It has been remodelled in the past so has mismatched arches. Patches of pre reformstion wall paintings, bits of ancient woodcarvings and even has a charnel house at one side. I only visited once but was enchanted.
Very Informative video. Thank you very much Dr Barton. May I recommend a visit to All saints church in the picturesque estate village of Ripley near Harrogate in the county of North Yorkshire. It is a fascinating church rich in aristocratic history and a deep connection with the Local Lords of the Manor, The Ingleby family whose chapel is in the north side isle. Your channel is amazing and as a 14 year old is very reassuring too know that there are many people you share my interests.
Hello Isaac, I have just looked up the church and it looks wonderful - some super monuments in there. Thanks for the kind words about the channel, I have been interested in history, art and architecture since I was your age - you are never alone there are always people interested in these wonderful things! It is encouraging for me to know that there are young people who love the past.
Allan, Is the Sir Henry Bedingfield you mentioned the same one who took charge of Elizabeth Tudor when she was released from the Tower in 1554? Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas!
The craftsmen who actually made these are, to me, more important than the lords n ladies. Mind you some of them are also worthy of their place in history. Not all of them were idle leaches.
So glad you’re still doing these, Allan. Our ancient churches need all the attention they can get.
I do enjoy producing these, churches are so important, the real repository of our history.

As always a joy to watch and learn. Heartfelt thanks😁 for posting
Thank you very much Rodney.
Beautiful. Was the terracotta painted back in the day?
Beautiful. Thank you
Thank you.
I enjoy your work so much.
My pleasure Diane, thank you.
I am in awe of the workmanship of these monuments. Incredible! ❤
Thank you, Allan.
What a BEAUTIFUL church!! ❤👍💚
A real stunner Nadia.
Thank you Allan and I wish you and your family a very happy Christmas
Thank you very much indeed. Merry Christmas.
You always educate me, in spite of myself! 😂❤
😂 in spite of yourself, that made me chuckle.

So sad about the collapse. Such lovely treasures. Thanks, Allan!
Those monuments are stunning

It always touches my most inner heart, when your videos let me not only see, but also learn about places, I likely never come to visit myself.
Fabulous, thank you!

I, too, am glad you are still doing these! I haven’t seen one of your videos in quite awhile and I’ve wondered why. Excellent work!
Happy Holidays to this welcoming and charming community.
The same to you too David, thank you for your very kind comment.

What a fabulous church and a lovely end of C16 brass eagle lectern!
Beautiful church

I enjoy your visits to the little churches this one is a little gem. Happy Christmas Allan and family
What a beautiful church! The graveyard is so well cared for.
What a beautiful church! Thank you for the armchair tour.
Love this, I explore old Anglican churches here in NZ where I live, some of our old churches have these remnants, great.
and may I return those wishes for a happy holiday season
to you and yours as well!
hmmm. the tube-y'all unsubscribed me.
so I have de-unsubscribed...
Lovely. I did a winter putting the house to bed tour of Oxborough Hall once which was fascinating.
That sounds amazing Chris, it is a fascinating house with its priest holes.
Merry Christmas Allan to you and your family.

Excellent and a happy Christmas to you and your family 🙏🎄I purchased a copy of the magazine 👍😁
Happy Christmas! Hope you enjoy the magazine 😊
Happy Christmas to you and your family.
I'm going to make a list of all these churches and visit as many of them the next time I'm in England.
Also, are they the same Pastons as Margaret, the great letter writer?
The very same.

I visiated Oxborough Church many years ago, good to see it again. It's strange that Oxburgh Hall is spelled differently
Merry Christmas.

💟
My impression of the terra cotta tombs has always been that they have the feel of French Renaissance style rather than directly Italian.
Anything about the Old St. Paul Abbey. When was it up?
Incredibly sad to see catholics buried in a catholic church that is no longer catholic😢
Anything on York Minster, anything on the Mortimers
The skull with the wings seemed very modern - "goth" almost!
I would like to know the title of the intro-music, can anyone tell me?
The Old Tower Inn.
Is there still a Duke of Norfolk?
The craftsmen who actually made these are, to me, more important than the lords n ladies. Mind you some of them are also worthy of their place in history. Not all of them were idle leaches.
It is a shame that we rarely know who the craftsmen were.
Thanks, Allan! ❤ "A veritable phalanx. of putti" I love it!
