I Got Submitted By The Skinny Guy (Looks Are Deceiving In BJJ)

  • The other day I was talking with one of my Blue Belts and White belts after training and we were talking about competitions. We got into the subject of weight, size and the look of people. The White Belt shared a bit of worry and intimidation about the size of potential people at his weight class.
And as I'll share in the video looks can be deceiving in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions and in general. In some cases I've gotten worked up over someone's overall appearance only to beat them handedly then other times I've taken someone too lightly because they look physically weak. . . and then they rip my head off.
I shared this story because it's something many of us do and I was curious if you do it as well and so I'd be curious to hear your experiences in the comments.
Thanks for watching and look forward to seeing your feedback.

The first person I ever rolled against was a skinny 65 year old brown when I was 16. I was a powerlifter back then so I thought "I can bench over 300 pounds, I'm gonna crush this old man. He said "take it easy on me, I'm old" and proceeded to ruthlessly beat the hell out of me for the entire round. I fell in love with the sport that day.

Do be careful rolling with old guys though. They might still have their old man strength but their joints are usually insanely stiff and can break easily and they might never come back even from a minor injury.
Some old guys like to go hard and keep up with the young guys but it’s best to keep your ego in check and just be really careful about preserving them because they are a rare breed. I usually just give back a bit less than what they give me and try be pretty gentle without being patronising

I love seeing this happen. The one time that really stands out is when I was probably 1 1/2yrs in or so and we had a UFC viewing party. It was some of my friends that never trained along with 2 of my friends from BJJ. One of the guys was a big power lifter that just started training with us, while the other guy was a 5'-7" unassuming, always smiling and joking around, not in the best shape... black belt in BJJ and TKD.
At one point both guys left the room for something and my friends go "OMG you train with him?! He's a mountain! He's so damn big I can't believe it you must get crushed!" I said "Forget him! You do realize Chris could murder any of us and the rest would be stuck watching right?" They just didn't understand it how the little guy is so much more dangerous than the big intimidating guy.

I had my first competition at JJWL in Fullerton two weeks ago. You're exactly right! The guy who smashed all of us and got gold was the nice unassuming lanky guy. He sparked up a good conversation with me in the bullpen. I was his first fight, he got me locked in a solid triangle on his second attempt and he went on to do that same technique to the biggest strongest looking guy who was way more intimidating at face value. I'm a 275 lb, no stripe white belt, former bouncer, and once in a roast session someone told me "you look like a retired powerlifter". My gym is full of killers all shapes/sizes and it always baffles me when a smaller three stripe blue belt will finish a tough roll with a high level brown belt and then look at me, half-dead after losing to some other white belt, and say "if we roll I need to start on your back because you're so much bigger than me I don't stand a chance otherwise".

140lbs brown belt here... my two cents of unsolicited advice - do your best to become the giant in the room that all the small, technical people feel safe rolling with. Even very experienced upper belts may reasonably fear injury because of your size. Use the training time with smaller people to learn to flow WITH their movement as opposed to resisting them and imposing your physicality. Here’s the catch - you’ll end up tapping more, but the payoff is that your learning rate will skyrocket and everyone will want to roll with you instead of trying to quietly avoid training with you. Best of luck on your journey, brother.

People who have never trained are completely ignorant to how truly vulnerable they really are. Lots of guys are intimidated by guys that "act tough" and commonly are covered in tattoos, have a shaved head, a giant puffy beard or goatee and are often loud and obnoxious, esp with their laughing. In reality, this person is often not that tough at all and it's the humble, quiet guy, that's been training for years thats the most capable of causing serious damage. Often times the loud obnoxious types also live unhealthy lifestyles and drink, smoke and in general just don't take of themselves. And bc theyre often so cocky, they're close minded, don't listen to others bc they think they're smarter than others, so as a result they don't progress nearly as quick as the humble open minded healthy guy that truly is like a sponge and learns everything you show him.
I learned a long time ago that the guy telling you he's an undefeated street fighter who has "knocked out so many people" is almost always compensating in one way or another. The last guy that told me he knocks everyone out bc he's so big (6' 210lbs) was so cocky he let me put him in side control and said JiuJitsu wouldn't work on him. I remember securing his arm and he made eye contact w me and said "am I supposed to feel it now" w a smirk on his face, I said "okay I'm gonna try to submit you now, you resist and try to get out" I proceeded to use one of my best techniques (a Braulio Estima) Kimura trap and after securing and isolating his arm, transitioning to a Kimura, he got to his knees and the turtle position, but I quickly threw my leg over his head and locked up the Kimura, after applying the submission of course he tapped out within seconds, then he sat down on the hotel room chair (this was in a hotel room we were sharing) and he couldn't believe what just happened. "How did you do that?" is what he said, I just said "it's all about the technique and applying leverage" ... "my two arms and entire body VS your one arm." Some people are so stubborn they just have to learn the hard way before they'll even begin to acknowledge the power of technique and JiuJitsu.
In my experience it's usually the bigger stronger guys that are the most resistance bc theyre so used to over powering people smaller than them, they refuse to accept the fact that there are 100% people smaller and weaker than them, who can absolutely dominate them due to being a better, more knowledgeable and experienced grappler.

I’m the skinny nerd in this story.
At my school, we do drilling with a partner, then that partner is our first roll. One day, my partner was a strong man of some sort. The ENTIRE time we drilled, he said how light I was for him, how he could squat 2 of me and bench press 47 of me (I can’t remember exactly), how helpful strength was and how basically impossible it was for him to ever be submitted by someone who wasn’t as strong as him.
I swept him, and decided to smother him from mount for 4 mins and 30 seconds, while he completely exhausted himself trying to escape, such that he sat out the next round. Strange fellow.

The same thing just happened to me literally a month ago. I’ve only been training for about 3 months and was doing really good. surviving when I was rolling but I wasn’t subbing anybody. I’m not really technically savvy like I wanna be I’m just really strong and rely on my strength to survive. But anyways I tapped a blue belt on a day we were going live and felt really cocky. so I saw this kid who was a purple belt and looked weak asf I’m talking nerdy asf if I saw this guy on the street I would fs think he’s a wimp. So I walk up to him shake his hand and say “you ready to get subbed by a white belt” he just laughed then I shot a double leg on this kid and slammed him on the ground pretty hard he said “thank you” and caught my arm in a sub so fast. I didn’t tap tho like an idiot I should have but the day after I couldn’t extend my arm. for about a week it was so tight. Anyways I learned my lesson and understand that there’s levels to this sport and I gotta lot of work to do 😂

lol that reminds me that a few classes ago this new guy came into the gym and said he hasn't trained at a gym yet but has been rolling some with his friends in like a gracie garage scenario. I'm a blue belt and we're close to the same size but I'm nerdy and don't look physically imposing at all. The entire class when he got there, he kept trying to explain things to me about how the techniques the coach was showing me worked and what to do even though I wasn't having any trouble at all and I got the impression that he thought I needed help or wasn't as knowledeable as he was but I didn't say anything and didn't really care all that much. Well when it came time to roll and I got paired with him about the third round of the day, again, he seemed like he tried to go into teacher mode a little bit. I just started rolling and got into mount over and over again. He was explosive so he'd get out for a second, then I'd move and get right back into it. I always go easy on the white belts initially so I wasn't attacking subs particularly hard, just going slow and methodically. He gassed in about 40 seconds into our roll, lol xD.
This was the end of the class so I kept rolling with him and another white belt back to back as they got tired. Even though I was dead tired myself, they kept commenting that they couldn't do anything to me even though I wasn't taking any breaks. I thought the whole thing was hilarious.

And there were two dudes that were not all that much to look at. I ended up in the finals with one of them and I remember not watching him roll at all because I thought he would be eliminated anyway. Well this kid comes and tells me afterwards that when he was looking at everyone in the division when they called us to the table before we started that he had said to himself "i Hope i dont go against that guy". Lol I asked him why he felt that way and he said it was the physical appearance. Back then I had the big muscles and he referred to my overlapping caveman looking eyebrows LMAO and that I just had a look on my face like I was mad at the world and ready to kill someone LOL. Another funny thing about that day is that I really did not do so well. I think I went 5 times and got two submissions and the others were Points. And the points wins were barely by like two or three points. We ended up having a really good laugh about it and I ultimately ended confessing that I did not think very much of him because he looked like he was an easy win 😂😂😂 ended up cross training w him a few times although he lives 4 hrs away. He is very skilled and of course improved very much or maybe it's because we were no longer in a competition setting and we were more relaxed so we got to give each other some awesome ass-kickings in the gym. Just me 3 cents👊👊👊😜 like the old saying goes don't judge a book by its first page. Just kidding just kidding cover

My first class (nogi) I was paired with this guy who was buff as hell. He beat the shit outta me, which was to be expected. But for my next sparring roll, I was paired with a chick, slightly chubby, and probably 35 pounds lighter than me. I immediately though "nice, finally I get a chance". She subbed me 5 times that roll, not even trying. Embarassing as hell, since I was pretty strong at the time and lifted regularly, but also the reason I got hooked.

I always think it would be fun, when you have new students, to have everyone take off their belts before the students come in. Then, have the new students rank the people based on who they feel is the most scary looking / toughest / best. I always imagine the nerds and 40 year old dad purple / brown belts being put so far behind the young ripped 23 year old white belts.
You do kinda get the same thing when you drop in no-gi. Unless people talk before a roll, I'm never sure how hard to go because there is no real indicator (I do look at ears) about who I'm about to roll with.

This guy years ago came in and he was a fully tatted up power lifter about 5,10 300lbs. After rolling he signed up for classes. He said, "If the skinny guy with glasses can tap me over and over in a round, this shit obviously works." BJJ has nothing to do with appearance or if your some athletic freak(that can help however). The mind controls the rest of the body, our stresses, actions and reactions. When the mind can perform steps ahead of the opponent, the effects of the strength and size diminish greatly inside of combat/grappling.

As the skinny dude in the gym, I do see my advantages. For one, flexibility comes easy for me, what I’m still learning how to use is my weight and strength as pressure. As only 130lbs rolling with 160-180ers in my gym I kinda have no choice but to use technique and flexibility rather than weight and strength. Granted I am working on learning how to use my weight as pressure, and where to use the strength I have etc. quite a challenge but I wouldnt have it any other way.

jujitsu black belts are like real life humans with super powers, especially when you watch then spar with 30 under belts and submit each and everyone of them. I got this lanky old dad at my Church that I never knew was a black belt with his white hair and very kindly attitude, (I'm just a blue belt BTW) until I was asking another of the younger Church member if he wanted to practice jujitsu he then informed me of that lanky dad guy and I introduced myself and since he sees me all the time asked if I wanted to practice at his place since he has mats, man was he very technical and you wouldn't even think just by looking at him that he could kill you lol especially since I always see him and thought I could mess up all the guys that go to Church lol Oh he also mentioned that he trains with one of the priests and the priest I believe is a brown belt lol

Rolled with an older guy back at my old gym. I only ever saw him this one time. He was meek lookin. Sun tanned skin, stained teeth, double ugly. (haha!) We started standing, wrist fought for maybe 5 seconds, and as soon as he caught my wrist I realized the guy had other worldly grip strength. I assume my face showed my surprise cause he smiled real quick right before pulling me in tight for a throw. It was helluva roll. I worked for every damn inch I could and somehow managed not to get subbed. After the roll I asked him what he did for a living. Turns out, he was a farm hand and an amateur bull rider.....

IBJJF Atlanta? As a white belt in your first comp, don't worry about a gameplan just listen for your coach's voice and follow his step-by-step instructions. The whole match will be a blur and seem to last about 30 seconds. If you haven't already developed and drilled a gameplan for a couple of weeks leading up to the tourny, there's no way you'll remember it during the match.
