I love making my own road bases. All you need is to find a flat bit of road, drag a rectangular trigger zone around it, then in the trigger tab destroy all trees and structures in that zone. Now with the new assets you can populate the strip with believable facilities. Don’t forget to save as a template and it’s yours forever. Thanks for the vid Ian! Keep em coming
@@tuukka518 in the triggers tab under actions use remove scenery objects zone. It’s really easy to use but can be buggy sometimes. If it works make sure you save as a template and you should have any problems. You can build as many as you like but ensure you just kinda layer templates. This really brings out the best in kola.
I love this map. I just wish it had more server. It's a beautiful place to fly. All I heard for years was " not another brown map." Now we have a large, very historical map. And it's getting the South Atlantic treatment from the community.
I really don’t want it to get the SA treatment. My hope is that this can become a good, popular map. It’s absolutely beautiful and it’s not even done yet.
Me and my Swedish community is now mainly flying Viggen on the Kola map. Me, living in Boden it's cool to see landmarks that your recognize in real life in DCS. Sure stuff is not 100% accurate when it comes to towns and such, but rivers, hills and bridges are quite decent.
Never stopped believing. I believe Orbx is taking it slowly, and getting experience with DCS and its programming tools, and the almost constant update cycle. Personally, I think this time next year it will be THE go to map for DCS players
Great video Iain, always appreciate your perspective. My issue with any maps is usually available content. I felt burned by Sinai, not because of the map itself but because there are no servers or campaigns using it that interest me. I think for Kola I am going to hold off until some good campaigns come out for it. Fortunately Baltic Dragon and Reflected are working on some already, so I dont think I'll be waiting long.
Great review, I was disappointed with how the terrain and especially the trees looked on release but I agree it's in a much better place these days. Thank you for the important historical context that some folks might otherwise miss, and the great explanation of possible scenarios for the area.
A Cold War Scenario with MiG-23s, MiG-25s, and the Russian class of Naval ships would be a fun mission to download and play. It will be nice when ED updates the Soviet Naval textures, but all in good time.
Great video.Really interesting historical background for the map.If I start seeing some Kola versions of “Return to Haiphong Harbour”missions, that’ll make me get this map.😎🇨🇦
As a swede, I love the Kola map of course. Even though I'm still hoping for a southern Sweden map (as hinted by Heatblur long time ago). The one thing that really bugs me though, is the totally overmixed sound volume of the buses roaming around. Took me a while to understand the source of the sound - was more lika an B17 flyby ;) If anyone know how to turn this off, please let me know. Totally ruins the immersion when flying low with the Kiowa.
What did the Swedes expect Finland to do if the balloon went up? The Viggen's range doesn't seem suited for crossing all the way from Sweden to Russia and back, so would they have been striking Russian targets in Finland?
Well as far as I can tell, they expected that Finnish "irregulars" would delay the Soviets at least to some extent. I think they also expected to support those irregulars with their own special forces. This would have given them the opportunity to also interdict those forces from the air to impose more delay and to better prepare their defenses. I did do a video on that idea called "Revenge of The Forest Trolls" - maybe look that up and see what you think.
From my perspective, being swedish, the assumption was always that the Soviets would advance far and fast. Overextend in other words. The Swedish main line was deep in the country and was supposed to function as the anvil, anchoring up the soviet forces as far as possible, while they'd be attrited from everywhere else and stabbed. Most of our heavy mechanized forces where earmarked for the south/middle. Rapid reaction and near suicidal attacks was the name of the game there to contain and beat beachheads, as those would not return if destroyed. But in the north... expensive and dearly bought slow attrition. More Kursk than Inchon or Anzio. It was based on the Finnish experiences from both the winter war but even more from the Karelian isthmus in '44
As a comment regarding performance, it more or less goes down to 0 fps when I try to land the Kiowa on the boat in the Lulea harbor. I guess it would be doable with a better spec PC, but currently it is a no go for me.
i really like dcs, have been playing it for 15 years. But i honestly don't need any more maps or modules, i just want content like campaigns or at least a dynamic campaign. Won't be buying any more before i can do more stuff in game
My frustration in this map is not knowing how to use it. Some aid with order of battle and objectives would have helped. A sandbox with no context has made me regret buying it.
Thanks for letting me know. I did do a video called "Revenge of The Forest Trolls" that was a little bit of window into that. I am quite happy to resurrect that project if there is enough interest. Please feel free to drop by my discord and continue the conversation. At this point it really is about finding a large enough, and willing enough, audience
The concept of paying for maps in DCS gives the same result : Critical mass is not reachedfor South Atlantic, Sinai, Afghanistan and Kola. Nobody plays them online. This will probably take several years.
Its definitely an issue. Part of the problem too is that the DCS community is not primarily on-line, but the visible parts of it are since they not only play on line, but engage more on social media. As someone is not really interested in playing on multi-player servers - but who does like to share ideas with others who "play with themselves" this is something I confront all the time in trying to keep a You Tube channel going.
I decide not to buy any more DCS maps. They are too expensive and most servers I'm on run the Caucasus map anyhow. With modules costing as high as $80 USD, the maps should be free. I will open my wallet the day they release a Vietnam map. I'm sure the player base will double if not triple in size the day a Vietnam map is released. But for now I'll be flying around the Caucasus map.

Wut, destroy trees from a zone? Which triggered action is it?

Oh, it works on power poles and such too which opens up a lot of the desert maps

Janes F-18 was my entry to the combat flight sim world as a kid, so the DCS Kola map is a homecoming for me.
Nice
I would love to see some mission on the Kola map, it's quickly becoming one of my favorites. Probably since I like 80's cold war the best.
Thank you for the review. It is Black Friday Sale and the Kola Map gets a 40% Off. So it is very interesting 👍👍👍
Kola is turning out to be my favourite map by far.

Sounds like a fair assessment. Let me know when you take the plunge.
Shadow reapers runs a good Syria/Sinai on rotation on multiplayer
the mountains in the opening clip look very pretty
Thanks. The textures are impressive.
Loved the historical contextualising of the map.
Thanks. It's one of the main reasons I was interested in Kola. It's got some real Cold War potential...

I will bear that in mind
spruce and birch trees are missing.....there are no deciduous trees in the area
Now we really need Starfighters!
Kola is the New Caucasus.
Storage Problems? Look into Symbolic Links...
I just moved half of my DCS Terrains off of my main DCS NVME drive to another SSD... SO FAR So GOOD!
Thank you Iain.
Very welcome
Are you doing any more of the moving mud series? They are missed.
I would love the Mig-23,25, or 31 on this map!
I would like to see the BAC Lightning, though this map is perfect to embarrass the Brits.
tx so much for this Mr.Iain

Will those Cold War scenarios of yours have pvp?
I haven't thought about it - but probably not since pvp is really not my thing.
It would be really cool if it included out to the West to the Shetland Islands North of Scotland…….
I owned the map but have not flown any time in it... In my opinion well worth every penny,
