  • Hello 👋
    Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
    This is Sam and Oliver plus 5 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
    We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
    We are both from farming background I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15 We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to were we are now. We took on a 500 acre hill farm in 2019 currently 5 years into the tenancy.
    Also, to show women in ag are just as useful

    I bought second hand mushroom cubicles and rubber mats and put them in an existing shed and it worked out ok but make sure to have them the correct width and length or cows won’t lye in them , on the other hand straw bedding might seem expensive but you can calve cows in a straw bedded shed and dung is great fertiliser compared to slurry .

    This is years ago and we only had a small sucker herd of six cows plus calves. We created a concrete step up and managed to get hold of some old Newton Rig dividers. Laid in rubber mats. Later added more ready made portable mushroom cubicles. Our shed wasn’t suitable for mechanisation, so when the daily hand scraping became an ordeal rather than a workout, we sold the herd. We let the cows and calves out on the yard confined with electric fence while cleaning out. We also sprinkled a small amount of sawdust on the dunging area making it a bit less slippery and easier to pick up. The cows and calves stayed clean and enjoyed their beds just as much as dairy cows would. Taking the barrow loads to the muck to the heap was literally pushing shit uphill, that was the killer for us in the end.
    Enjoyed seeing the kids play. Jimmy should put on a growth spert with all that muck in his boots. Well done Nancy.

    You should have mentioned your idea for cow cubicles 2 months ago! There were grants on new flexi cubicles and even cow mattresses. Ideally, 4ft spacing between cubicles and your shed looks to be 4 bays long, so you'd get 20 cubicle spaces up each side. There is sometimes second hand for sale, but if metal, then you want the cubicles that are fixed onto two bars along the front. Cubicles with legs on that get concreted into the ground are rubbish, higher chance of them getting stuck, and they break off eventually.
    I'm sure there will be grants available again if you want to wait.
    How about looking at other bedding alternatives like paper or a few sawdust suppliers offer cheaper bulk loads of lesser grade sawdust type bedding. It would do no harm to ring around and see what could be available.

    • @Sam-shutt
      @Sam-shutt  Месяц назад

      We've tried paper waste and wasn't really impressed 😬 we can't claim any grants because we don't claim bps. So don't have an sbi number or whatever it is they need. We will have a think thanks for the advice ! 👍

    Hello,I'm from the u.s and like ur post and watch them all.stalls can keep them cleaner and less bedding,also you can use corn fauder for bedding,we bale up the corn stalks and store them and when we need bedding we grind up the bales and use it for bedding. Today everything cost more so u need to think out of the box. Also when the mulch market is swamped, the wood chips are cheap but they also need to be grind smaller, but once GROUND up there just like saw dust. JUST some idea's, keep those post coming!

    personally i think the straw price has been talked up........some years spring barley is very short and doesn't yield much straw this year it looks pretty good and will yield reasonably well and last year a lot of corn farmers were chopping there straw this year cos the price is a bit higher i don't think so many will chop it, so it may turn out straw isn't as dear through the winter as last year and if it was a dryer autumn that would help..........i know all if's and but's. if you got cubicles your going to get slurry.........the enviroment agency get funny about slurry storage and spreading it in winter when fields are wet
