Her voice is so one of a kind!! She defines the word 'unique' vocally! And then there's her guitar playing, also unique! And on a steel 12-string which is once again, unique! Put it all together and you have a musical gift of the highest order!! Thank you, Fil for bringing her to us as only you can! You are also a gift to us!
What an accomplished musician, she's exceptional and a great person. I haven't heard her in a long time, I always liked her style. Thanks for reminding me of her talent.
Her album “Joan Armatrading” is the soundtrack of my college days at UNC. I wore out that album and it instantly transports me when I hear it. She’s so amazing and seems like a really humble and cool person.
I’ve been listening to Joan for years, and I have to say that she is in a class by herself...she’s an incredibly talented singer, musician and songwriter. In other words, Joan is a substantial cut above most everyone else in the music business, even today. No one else can touch her! Keep raving on, Joan!
It's been many years since I thought about Joan Armatrading. Her vocals, especially are very unique and memorable. Thanx! And by the way, congrats on 70k subscribers! !
Blown Away By Her Asylum Chapel 2021 Set On TV Last Night.......Unique Being Her Own Role Model.......... Massively Inspiring Singer Song Writer Musician To Up And Coming Artists..........Blessed And Born For It.
Learning about how accomplished and generous Joan really is was as great as having that amazingly complex playing sorted out for us! What a great career she's had!! I see the brother (Tony Armatrading) who suggested she play a few covers to draw people in, (and then wow 'em with her originals), on TV here in the US quite a bit and he's had a considerable film career, as well. Pretty talented family! This was all in all a totally wonderful analysis video, thank you!
Nice one Fil..love her style. Best female artist ever & so inspiring. You got her spot on. She owns that guitar & has a style of her own. Shes not scared to mix musical genres, jazz, blues, country with a lil funk. Thankyou so so much for this. She's a legend to me, love her. A beautiful humble woman. My favourite album...'To the Limit'. Her song writing is also bar none. 🤘🤘🤘❤
Man, I remember when I first heard Joan, this song. I had just returned to the US after being in Europe for a few years. She blew me away, I bought her album and played it often when relaxing after harvesting weed in Oregon. Yeah! Thanks Fil for featuring.
Interesting analysis of her playing technique because I always felt her vocals, while delivering great phrasing is also used as a percussive instrument.
This is excellent - re-introduce Joan A. to those who may have missed her. Another person you might look at is Boz Scaggs - live footage from as early as 1971, and an excellent live concert from 2004. He is someone who people may need a re-introduction to - his new album is "Out of the Blues" and it is great, imho. He both plays guitar and sings.
November 1975 - went to see Supertramp at the Birmingham Odeon. They were pretty good, but the support act, an unknown artist by the name of Joan Armatrading blew the roof off the place. This started me on a 40+ year love affair with her music. Saw her last year at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham, and believe me she's still got it!!
Only knew Joan Armatrading from her 'greatest hits'. Always found her voice was amazing but I had no idea she was so talented on guitar. Thanks once again, Fil for filling me in!
Yet another blues player i haven't heard of, love that ACOUSTIC, guitar picking, she does very well, without a back up band.... Her voice is smokey sexy, blues, loved this, performance, and your total break down of all her talents! Fil, you are really on a blues streak, love it!
Is that Joan playing on 'Opportunity' off the 'Show Some Emotion' album? Come on, how good is that! Well, whether or not it was her, she is a total legend. Loved her playing and singing in the seventies, still love her now. Thank you Joan, and thanks as always for bringing this review to us Fil.
I was hoping you had a JA review! Love her. I've watched about 15 of your reviews but loved that in this one your head was movin' while you were groovin'. JA will evoke that. Also, as a female I appreciate your respect towards the women you review. You're a class act.
Thanks. I've been hoping you'd take a look at Joan. She has been a unique talent that is best known as a singer/songwriter, but can do it all -- even play blues guitar. She has had real staying power. Thanks again.
Thanks for showcasing this legendary lady! Was lucky enough to witness Joan's electric guitar instrumental/solo work with her band at Rockpalast 2007, no surprise waa on point throughout the whole concert as was her bass player the very inspiring John Giblin (sadly now deceased) and her drummer and keyboardist. An unforgettable concert that luckily someone uploaded on RUclips.
Saw Joan Armatrading live in Melbourne (Australia) a few years after the concert which you review here. What a great musician/song writer she is, and like you said she also has a great unique voice. Her concert was as good as any of her studio recordings.
I officially got tinnitus in my ears at a concert of hers in Monterey CA. I remember the sound mix was screeching and then, pop!! Have had ringing in my ears ever since. But it was worth it!! Love Joan
I love a vast ray of musical styles! this performance by Joan Armatrading was flawless! superb strumming on her guitar and vocals. another informative analysis and break down. keep Rockin' through the years Fil.
Thought I’d been the biggest J.Armatrading fan. Bought every album as soon as they came out. Saw her in concert in Seattle in ‘82 BUT , 😬 I had no idea she could play like this. I loved the sound that came from her Ovation, but never saw her riff like this. Late to the party, but thanks for this !
I have been a fan of Joan Armatrading for years, since hearing her on the John Peel show. Her tune "Show some Emotion" is among my most played vinyl 45's. I was lucky enough to see her play (again) a few years ago here in the U.K. she was bluesy & brilliant, really letting rip on guitar.
Thanks for featuring the brilliant Joan Armatrading; she is such an amazingly talented writer, musician, performer and she possesses a wonderfully unique voice. I love her guitar playing here ; she has also worked with several of my favourite guitarists such as Jerry Donahue and Mark Knopfler. I do remember Joan saying back in the mid 80s, or thereabouts , that she was really into Knopfler and also Eddie Van Halen !
"A feel way of playing." Simply put, that is the very heart and soul of the blues. Check out the old RUclips clips of Son House and a young Buddy Guy playing together. Musical skills can be learned, but the "feel" is from way down deep. You're doing some good stuff Fil, keep it up.
Thank you for this great assessment of Joan's guitar playing. I'm surprised you didn't mention the phaser effect pedal she is using (you can see/hear her switching it on in the full video), which is very clever in that it adds texture and a third dimension to an already very rich sound. It does take the sound to another level. I'll venture to guess she uses it to fill out the sound a little more to substitute for the full band (rhythm section, piano, backing vocals) that is in the album version. For those who are interested in streaming this on Spotify, there is a similar version of this song, from the same year, on the Live in North America set).
Always loved Joan Armatrading since I was introduced to her music around 1976. Attended about 3 of her concerts over the 70s/80s in Sydney, Australia. I still prefer this early music of hers
Amazing Fil....I was listening to her yesterday! Joan is a Sensational artist, blessed with an exceptional voice and a brilliant guitarist! One of my real favourites of the late 70s&80s and beyond! Great analysis Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀🤘🤘
Great choice! I listened to "Me, Myself, I"--every song of which is fantastic---a lot in 1984-6. What a voice and instrumental talent she is. At the time...and to this day, I felt she should be as big as the Pretenders or Heart. I wondered what became of her and then I saw her on Jools Holland a few weeks ago so I guess she's ok.
Thanks again Fil, for bringing Joan's guitar ability to our attention. I started listening to Joan Armatrading from the 80s, and never knew she was such a badass with the guitar. Great review.
Another great performer. These kind of performers are rare....the ones who can get up on a stage and sing & play solo. The requirements for these individuals are: a supreme talent; huge self confidence & nerves of steel!
Thanks, Fil. I always liked Joan when I saw her but didn't get a chance to explore her as an artist--didn't know she could play like that. Speaking of artists who could play multiple instruments and make albums by themselves puts me in mind of Todd Rundgren.
Nice one, Fil! I have been a Joan Armatrading since 80/81 after hearing her on a radio station one night. I got to see her in 83 and then again around 95. I always got a Stephen Stills vibe off her acoustic sets, the way she layers melodies over and under the basic rhythm with an aggressiveness that makes it blend into a solid sound that surprisingly counters that aggression into some fun. I used to put her albums on just to figure out different rhythms on my bass because, for me at least, her playing lends itself to so many counter-rhythms for the bottom end... Keep it up Brother!
Thank you for playing Joan Armatrading, her talent is monstrous, she has never had the air time her talent deserved.
Joan Armatrading played the soundtrack of my youth! I listened to her every day for 20 years. Still love her.
In my book, Joan is one of the ten best singer songwriters ever!
Saw her twice in NYC, and Rochester NY. Awesome talent. We owe her friends a debt of gratitude for encouraging her to perform!!!
What an accomplished musician, she's exceptional and a great person. I haven't heard her in a long time, I always liked her style. Thanks for reminding me of her talent.
She retired from live performance she is seventy but she is still making music
Like all the other greats, Joan touches a part of your soul you didn't know you had.
She can throw down. Technically brilliant and an honest voice❤️
I never saw Prince, Rush, Hendrix or many of the greats, but I've seen Joan twice and I think that's as good. Thank you Joan.
Her album “Joan Armatrading” is the soundtrack of my college days at UNC. I wore out that album and it instantly transports me when I hear it. She’s so amazing and seems like a really humble and cool person.
I LOOOOOOVE Joan Armatrading! I’ve followed her since the early 80’s, and am so glad she’s still playing!
I’ve been listening to Joan for years, and I have to say that she is in a class by herself...she’s an incredibly talented singer, musician and songwriter. In other words, Joan is a substantial cut above most everyone else in the music business, even today. No one else can touch her! Keep raving on, Joan!
Didn't know Joan was such an amazing guitarist! Thank you for opening my eyes to wonderful performers. 👍
It's been many years since I thought about Joan Armatrading. Her vocals, especially are very unique and memorable. Thanx! And by the way, congrats on 70k subscribers! !
She is still around, she has a FB page and is always keeping people up to date with what she is up to
@@personalcheeses8073 Thanx! I'll be sure to check it out!!

Fil, you have done it again. Joan A. is great, and your analysis is excellent.
@Brad zybola Are you thinking of "At 17" by Janis Ian? Fil covers that!
Joan really does have it all - songwriting, voice, guitar playing and, as you say, seems to be an extremely nice person. Thanks Fil!
Sheer brilliance in all respects - thank you, Fil.
Not only can she play , she's also a great songwriter .
Awesome singer and songwriter. Thanks for highligting Joan's talents.
I love her. Without a doubt she is underrated but she is in no way underappreciated.
What I find great about this channel is getting to know great guitarist that I didn't know about prior. Thanks
Ken Smith exactly ...that's why I love this channel and his band
Me 3
Ken Smith same here! 🙋🏻♀️
Ken Smith No boundaries here...just music.
Fils knowledge is incredible for someone so young.I had too many hang ups at that age.Obviously him being a musician himself lends his words creedence
for me the best .. love her voice.. so much character and the feel she gives to each song with it.. amazing playing. great analysis Fil..
Love this. Can’t believe you reviewed.
Breath of fresh air when she came on the scene. Outstanding song writer. And my oh my, what a voice!
I finally got to see Joan Armatrading in concert in 2015. Incredible show.
Hadn’t heard her in years-this video shows her great musicianship that I had not appreciated before. Very enjoyable 😎
Joan Armatrading! One of the best from the seventies! truly unique.
Joan is such a talented performer, what soul and skill, so intelligent, love her. wonderful vid, thanks Fil !
My God, another artist I'd forgotten about. Loved the review and background info!! 🎸🎶👍
Love and Affection is IMO her greatest song. But I also love this track.

He is someone who people may need a re-introduction to - his new album is "Out of the Blues" and it is great, imho. He both plays guitar and sings.
Always enjoyed her voice on recordings, but hadn't observed her guitar playing until now. Wow. Her playing is just as unique as her voice ♥️
I love Joan!!! man that brings back memories of my childhood my mom loved her..

Playing her hometown
Wow this brings back some memories. My older sister loved her. I forgot how great she was. Boy time flies👍👍
Only knew Joan Armatrading from her 'greatest hits'. Always found her voice was amazing but I had no idea she was so talented on guitar. Thanks once again, Fil for filling me in!
I used to love Joan Armatrading. I saw her perform live in Washington DC 1977.
Saw Joan back in the 80's when she was touring the 'me, myself, I' album , such a nice lady!
I love how she sings, she kicks butt!!
A surprise to me!
I had No Idea Joan was that much of a player, but Yes, She Is!
Yet another blues player i haven't heard of, love that ACOUSTIC, guitar picking, she does very well, without a back up band.... Her voice is smokey sexy, blues, loved this, performance, and your total break down of all her talents! Fil, you are really on a blues streak, love it!
Brilliant. Amazing talent. Thx for time traveling to bring forward music from back in the day that still ranks high!
Love Joan, her playing and her voice is simply amazing. She makes that Ovation work. Thanks again !

Her voice !!!
Wow, thank you for turning me on to Joan. I can't believe that I missed out on her great music.

Man she owns that stage!
What a great choice. Thanks
She makes it look natural and easy and it's really anything but. Great stuff.
You have got me listening to new things and expanding my horizons. Thanks man.
She’s still going strong! Fabulous.
I have always enjoyed her music both as a singer & as a kick ass guitarist!
I love a vast ray of musical styles! this performance by Joan Armatrading was flawless! superb strumming on her guitar and vocals. another informative analysis and break down. keep Rockin' through the years Fil.
Drew Pall It’s array BTW
Didn't realize Joan is such an accomplished guitar player.
'Like Fire' has great licks. Probably my favorite tune she did.
Thought I’d been the biggest J.Armatrading fan. Bought every album as soon as they came out. Saw her in concert in Seattle in ‘82 BUT , 😬 I had no idea she could play like this. I loved the sound that came from her Ovation, but never saw her riff like this. Late to the party, but thanks for this !

seen her live a few times terrific performer and song writer.
Thanks for going all fanboy on Joan. She deserves it!
There‘s something about her singing (though not the same energy) that reminds me of Tracy Chapman! Love her playing - thanks for the post!
Rock'n that ovation guitar. Sweet playing from Joan.
I was mesmerized watching her playing...Thanks for a new experience!
I have an elevated appreciation of this great lady. Thx Fil for all the addl info!
You're so on the money with your analysis of her playing technique. Just a great musician all around, extremely talented woman.
Thanks - one of my first favourites x
Thank you!

Man she would be fun as hell to jam acuistic rock with. Thanks Fil. I've heard the name, but did know.
Yer The Man🤘🍺
I am pleased to be able to say "Whatever's for Us" was a big hit in the flat I lived in around 73/74.
Thanks for featuring the brilliant Joan Armatrading; she is such an amazingly talented writer, musician, performer and she possesses a wonderfully unique voice. Great analysis and history lesson bro!
What a great video thank you Phil
JA is one hugely talented woman. Lucky enough to have seen her live, twice.
Loved Joan - used to do ‘Down to Zero’ when I was singing - loved doing it too 😊 she’s amazing - Kudos Fil 👍👍👍👍🇦🇺🤶🥰🎄😘

😃Hi fil, goodness me few years passed since I've heard Joan play😂😂feel old lol very unique. Great breakdown fil👋👋👋👋👋
Saw her live in Glasgow post L+A success. Spotlight picked out her guitar on Help Yourself intro solo. Astonishing.
Another great performer. These kind of performers are rare....the ones who can get up on a stage and sing & play solo. The requirements for these individuals are: a supreme talent; huge self confidence & nerves of steel!
I see similarities between Armatrading and Tracy Chapman. Always enjoy your analysis. Thanks, Fil, and love and greetings from Omaha, NE USA.
