The total gym is still here after all these years. Most of the latest and greatest exercise equipment that explodes on the scene, a year later it fades into not as great as the advertising told us it was. Or if it’s really any good or different it gets copied and cheapened until it’s just junk. The total gym is still around. It’s still in gyms and PT / therapy centers. Because it works and is very useful, just like walking, calisthenics, biking, lifting weights, and swimming. All very safe and time proven when used / done safely. And it is a great PT / rehab tool.
Great comment and love all the details you outlined there. I think this was the first one of yours I read that didn’t have the thumbs up emoji. But I always look forward to those as well.
One reason to use the Total Gym is that it is safer than using free weights. Lifters who do not use proper form or who try lifting weight beyond their capability may injure themselves. It may be possible to injure yourself on a TG, but I think it would be much more unlikely to happen. Another reason: one piece of equipment (plus a few attachments) rather than a room full of weight stations or racks of dumb bells or kettle bells. People who dismiss the TG simply reveal they have never tried it enough or not ata all.
Very true. I often find I can do a lot more work on a muscle and even get away with some poor form and have much less aches and pains compared to free weights.
I purchased the TG Fit Chuck Norris edition a little over a year ago after watching several of your videos (great deal from TG where they sell their refurbished units on eBay - was $700 “new” in box with full warranty; but, I digress…). Fast forward to now and it has kept me engaged and exercising consistently more than anything I’ve ever done in the past. I am very happy I made this choice. While I have experienced weight loss on the scale, more importantly I’m noticeably slimming down, getting stronger and feeling great! I still have a ways to go in my journey, but keeping tabs on your channel has helped me stay engaged; and I occasionally pick up some of the accessories you review (via the links in your descriptions to try and supporting the channel) to keep things fresh. Overall I’m thrilled with the results and I don’t see myself switching to any other method for strength training in the future! Thanks for all the great content and inspiration!
It turns out your body can't tell the difference what sort of resistance you use when working out, it just knows resistance is being applied to it and will adapt to that resistance.
i think its up the person to make the tg equal or even better than any other resistance exercise.i stretch and sqeeze every muscle .slow down targeting the muscle plus its fun because theres so much to do.and with mike demonstrating in these videos is the key to the lock of success.ive been working out for 40 years.im 57 and getting in the best shape of my life.adding tg movements in with barbells, dumbells, bands is a goldmine to my fitness goals.great channel ❤
I do use dumbbells occasionally but at age 61 my results speak for themselves. Your physique tells the tale. BTW I bought some swivel clips today if that is what they are called.. I know you featured an older gentleman on a video, how about a female of a similar age?
I had one of these but had to get rid of it due to converting my loft space so I joined a gym. Having now regained some space elsewhere in my house I have now bought another one and cancelled my gym membership. Brilliant little machines. Half the fun of owning one is experimenting and discovering new exercises/variations. Mine also has a bar fitted which allows me to add more weight. It's a win win!! Great videos by the way.
I have an old school Total Gym it's 1700 club edition with all of the attachment I baloon up 360lbs I been using it 3 to 4 times a week for a month but also I go walk 3 miles 4 times a weeks 1st and work on my push ups too and I'm glad it still works I can tell I'm getting stronger. My goal is to loose 60 to 80 lbs I know it's gonna b a long journey but I'll get there.
Just stick with a brother and keep the long game in focus. Find whatever diet works for you and your lifestyle. you otherwise got the Fitness down with the total gym. Just keep staying consistent.
@Sliding Bench Trainer ty sir u go into detail about how u trained I follow your work keep it. I was thinking of doing a fasting diet plan any suggestions let me know ty
Recently bought my first TG because of your videos and it’s the most fun I’ve had working out in a long time. So many different things you can do and don’t have to wander around the gym to various machines or free weight areas. It’s very encouraging to me to see that you’ve had such great results using it. I’m hoping the fun I have using it will help me with building consistency!
Thanks brother. That means a lot that you trust the channel to pick one up. But you’re right there are so many things you can do that keeps it interesting and fresh. I can’t think of any other single piece of home gym equipment that does the same.
Bought a G5 not long ago because of your videos. I feel like it’s been great for building back strength in my bad knee. I saw that you also use a mini trampoline but I don’t recall any videos on one. What exercises do you do on it?
Thanks for that comment and for watching. Here's a video I did with my "cellercizer" ruclips.net/video/iKovLQY7Tvo/видео.html but overall I just get on it hop and kick my legs around to various angles.
Been watching your videos for some time now and am impressed with the Total Gym in a way but need to know if it's accommodating for tall people as I'm 6' 1".
Mike thanks for all your info. What's the latest on the GR8 vs Total Gym? I'm ready to buy and would like you to get something from it, can we purchase through your website or channel???
Great review, and I totally agree with you!! Do you know if actor/martial arts expert Wesley Snipes still uses the TG? I know he was a few years ago, even taking it with to various locations.
Had mine for 2 months. Still struggling to feel my chest on pressing exercises. Little burn, or pump. Did 3 sets of ring push ups last week and got a good burn and pump. Couldn't touch chest for 4 days. Wish I could figure out how to activate chest on TG.
I agree. Chest is perhaps the ONLY weakness of this machine. However try this: ruclips.net/video/lFKTzRm54vg/видео.html combine this with the variation of bringing your elbows together as explained here ruclips.net/video/aAI5XsKU7Yw/видео.html Gets me a solid pump.
There are a variety of shrug exercises you can do but I’ve always found that the rear dealt fly exercise on here really works the traps well. I should do a future video on this though.
I don't think it's necessarily bad or fully disagree with aspects of it, but when you consider the current science on hypertrophy (see Brad Schoenfeld) and others who've promoted and seen success with higher volume training, then I think it's more one of the many ways to skin a cat. There are certainly workouts where it's close to his style.
Funny, I used to b in the other camp....had my TG(XL) for 4 yrs and used it for legs (bad knees)1 day a week....your channel has helped me discover the variety and usefulness of the TG....so now its 80-90% of my wrkouts(still hate chest on it...ha!)...good stuff....thnx👍🏋️♂️
Thank you for the comment. I got to do more "chest" videos. It could be a personal thing, but I actually think a TG is the best tool i have (compared to DBs, BBs) for hitting my chest and it's hard for me to build my chest.
the ability to easily add substantial resistance with bands or weights makes the difference for the lower body. I spent thousands on crap home equipment. Or stuff that wasn't versatile and fun to use. I wish I had bought this 25 years agp
For me just as I started to train with weights and fix my diet i saw major changes in my physique. Before that i worked out with resistance bands and i didn't see ANY results.
I know some people love resistance bands and I’m not saying you can’t get results using them but for me I’d have a hard time sticking with just using those. Great to hear of your positive progress.
Prefer dumbbells for shrugs and Romanian deadlifts. However, for speed, simplicity and TUT this machine is superb. Anyone can get a great resistance training workout in minutes not hours.
@@hybridresistance totally agree it appears my traps have blossomed with the rear delt fly's and pulls. However, felt the pulling action from DB shrugs was necessary but maybe not? Also, don't feel face pulls are necessary with this machine. Thanks a lot for your channel opening a whole new world.
I generally add time stamps, but considering it was a 6min video I didn't on this one. In defense, I think the intro builds context into the very common criticism I receive so often.
Total gym is good for the goals you going for. But you also gotta remember that it’s also limited. For example if you got a goal to be strongman or wanna bench press 300pounds or more you can’t achieve that on total gym. That can only be achieved by powerlifting that’s why total gym is different for goals. Total gym is good for maintaining muscles and growing muscles with some strength to some degree.
For sure you're right. I didn't make that distinction in this video, but I usually will stress that it is great within a certain context. My general argument is though that for the vast majority of most people's resistance training goals, this will hit them.

I love it. I have not used it in years. I am 57, so looking forward to staring again.
Great to hear. Many people have shared very similar stories to rediscover how great these machines are.

Well for whatever reason people still dont understand what this machine can do. It works if you use it. Thank you what you do
Definitely Mike. Long time users like you know what it’s all about.

Thanks so much Josef. For the most part lately I’ve been doing upper body/lower body splits.
Been watching your videos for some time now and am impressed with the Total Gym in a way but need to know if it's accommodating for tall people as I'm 6' 1".
I'd say so. I'm 6ft if that helps. I made a whole video on this here ruclips.net/video/emfpvtHhbLM/видео.html

Everyone was telling about that in my "celebrity video", but I'd have to research that a bit more.
Man dude you're getting alot more comments now. You nail these videos
They're hit or miss, I'm trying. Thanks as always for your consistent support Mike
you showed your feet on doing the chest presses! Cool. I was wondering what you meant by feet assistance - really not much at all! thanks

What are your thoughts on a Mike Mentzer Heavy Duty (High Intensity Training) style of training on the Total Gym?
I don't think it's necessarily bad or fully disagree with aspects of it, but when you consider the current science on hypertrophy (see Brad Schoenfeld) and others who've promoted and seen success with higher volume training, then I think it's more one of the many ways to skin a cat. It''s most inviting type of training equipment IMO.
For me just as I started to train with weights and fix my diet i saw major changes in my physique.

bands for variety but they might not provide enough resistance

Prefer dumbbells for shrugs and Romanian deadlifts. However, for speed, simplicity and TUT this machine is superb. Anyone can get a great resistance training workout in minutes not hours.
Amen to that. I do feel my traps have been getting worked pretty well doing the traditional rows and and excess pulling I've doing.

Your arms say you're NOT wasting your time with the Total Gym! I'm finding the same with resistance bands, honestly.
Thanks brother. I'm also falling back in love with bands. Got some more videos on them coming soon.

The average person isn't going for power lifting. That's a class in itself
you´ve convinced me, I bought one lol 😆
There you go!!
Looking at those guns you have, how can they debate that TG doesn't build muscle
Appreciate that Tim, too nice. Thank you so much again for watching him for the support.
Nonsense and BS to those who keep spouting dumbbells and barbells . Total gym works and works well ....the infomercials do it no justice.
Amen brother.
