You might be from Portage if you remember the two Large Department Stores on Saskatchewan Avenue called Woolworths and the Met. You may also remember the Men's Clothing store called Narvey's, next door to a Women's clothing store called Marr's.
Also Ralph's and McLeods. Uptown on Saturday afternoon was where everyone gathered then. Grew up in PlaP and still think about it all the time 68 years later and go back a couple times/year just to see the old home town. And that's what it will always be to me....my home town. You never forget where you grew up. Back then we played outside all year long from dawn to dusk and NEVER worried about a thing. Portage has it's issues, it always has but so does everywhere. But it was a great little town to grow in. Delta beach 20 minutes away was a huge plus. It was quaint with small cottages not the huge monstrosities there now, and the beach was much better back then before the diversion brought in all the crud and most of the shoreline disappeared. Spent lots of time at the city's jewel, Island Park, and remember the peacocks crowing at the bird enclosure near the pond and having rainbow ice cream at the small concession stand in front of the wading pool there. Winter festivals on the lake. Great little town. Worked at the Safeway store in the middle of town also.
What about -Wayne's inn? Yellow submarine, robins donuts, Franco's , westos, Kelly's pizza, north and south hockey rinks, republic park,Arthur meighen ,pic a pop, tastys bakery, jimmy deans, mtn, midtown market, spriggs resteraunt, hutlets corner store, ryshacks, kiddy corral, mike and Irene's
Miss portage as parents lived there Was back to visit friends couple years ago. Hubby wants to go back and visit again as not been that way before. Now live in Edmonton since 1957 and love it here. Portage has a little town atmosphere. Not fond of Winnipeg. Have great day.
I'm now well and truly homesick. Was born and raised in Portage. Jimmy's Cafe was the best Chinese food, the Peenie Farm was where you really got to be a kid. Dale Prospect was my first school. Treasure Chest of Treats, Kyshes Corner Store but best of all was Island Lake for picnics and Delta Beach for an occasional much needed all day get-a-way.
Grew up in Portage. If we got good grades our dad took us bowling then to Bonanza! Loved it! Great walk down memory lane thanks!

What ever happened to the Olympia Cafe where Clarke Gable used to hang out in the 1950's while duck hunting at Delta.
