  • The shocking case from Whitesburg, Kentucky, has rocked a small Appalachian town after District Judge Kevin Mullins was fatally shot in his courthouse chambers. The shooter, Letcher County Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines, has been charged with murder following an argument between the two longtime friends and colleagues. The Armed Attorneys Emily Taylor and Richard Hayes examine the tragic events leading up to the shooting and the local scandal involving both men that preceded the incident.

Having briefly dated a judge’s daughter and later in life, shot sporting clays with a couple different judges, vs hanging around Sheriffs during search and rescue missions and being a law enforcement range master, I’d guess the chance of the judge being the a$$hole in this situation is about 99%! Like always, the more power you have, the more corrupt and despicable you are likely to be. And judges get to play at being god almost daily and since they have almost no checks and balances, well there you go.

Reports of female inmates being coerced in chambers no less by Sheriff's Deputies for sexual favors, one inmate supposedly made a statement, another is dead. Lots of seedy intrigue on the behind the scenes scandalous behavior in a small mountain town is going to come out. In big cities people can fool around and nobody knows the "other woman". In small towns, you're always plowing the wife or daughter or ??? of somebody you know and maybe see every day - and it happens more than people think.

I think law enforcement has a higher percentage of hot heads than most other professions. Most people are more emotionally hurt than they are enraged when bad things happen. Most people would start being vindictive and locking bank accounts and informing others. On top of that, law enforcement officers are the only people allowed to carry weapons in the judge’s chambers.

Emily, I am a fifth generation Texan, Expatriated to Alaska. Other sides of the family are Arkansas, Mississippi, and Kentucky. Definitely hillbilly roots.
The idea that there was one person in the world that could get you to kill them, may mean that society is not at risk, has merit to me.
I'm thinking of the beating of the step-father that was abusing your mother. If he dies from his injuries, not really your fault that he couldn't take the thumping that he definitely earned.
Guns make it a little more complicated.
I remember reading a legal dictionary once (weird I know) that defined most words by case law. The word "proximate" (I think) was defined by the case of a woman who had shot another woman that had a knife. In the case law, she was found guilty because the proximity wasn't sufficient. The woman that had been shot was opposite a campfire and twenty feet away when she was shot. I haven't been able to find the reference again. Is my memory faulty? Is this still considered a major factor?

It wasn't about a heat of passion...The sheriff's deposition was coming up within a week of meeting with the judge...It was posted in a lot of news outlets that Stines was deposed on Monday in a lawsuit filed by two women, one of whom alleged that a deputy forced her to have sex inside Mullins chambers for six months in exchange for staying out of jail...the lawsuit accuses the sheriff of deliberate indifference in failing to adequately train and supervise the deputy and that the former deputy sheriff ben fields pleaded guilty to raping the female prisoner while she was on home incarceration. Fields was sentenced this year to six months in jail and then six and a half years on probation for rape, sodomy, perjury, and tampering with a prisoner monitoring device..So it sounds like more than one in that town was into some illegal stuff..My guess would be,The judge had some things on his phone that could also get the sheriff into a lot of trouble so he took him out...

Back in Chicago in the 80s, they had so many crimes that people didn't stay in jail long because there wasn't enough room for every criminal in the city to be there. For murder, the time in jail seemed to be six years, based on what I heard. A local radio talk host wanted to find out if there was anybody in any jail in the city who'd been there more than ten years. They finally found this one guy they interviewed who'd been there more than ten years. They asked him what he was in for. He said, "I was convicted of shooting somebody messing around with my wife." They asked if he did it. "Of course," he said, without any regret. That's the only murderer they could find who'd been in jail more than ten years, and that for a crime of passion, at least that's what the perp said it was.

All rumors & speculation so far . But as long as you're addressing factors around hypotheticals :
One of the rumors is to the effect that Sheriff went to the chamers to confront Judge about allegations of ( some particular illegal actions ) .
When confronted , the Judge drew his gun first ( from person ? From desk drawer ? ) , and Sheriff reacted and straight up defended himself .
I dunno . I wasn't there . But * something * implausible actually happened , and this one is no more inherently implausible than the other speculations
