I presume it's the same guy who bought Symphony of the Night after seeing the Bloody Zombie's bloody death animation. That story's still stuck with me all this time.

My dad's best friend (whom we call Uncle) was a big NES junkie and the man who got me into gaming. His son could get to 8-1 of Super Mario Brothers at Age 2. He also only spoke French till he was a teenager and would always recite English commercials without understanding what he was saying.
My 20-something cousin got me into JRPGs (FF4, specifically) when I was 8, and another one of my older cousins gave me his collection of pirated Commodore 64 games the next year. My favourites were Wasteland, Bard's Tale 3, and Phantasie 3 even though I didn't have access to disc 4 of Wasteland or the copy protection stuff for Bard's Tale 3.
That's because the Hair on Johnny's Uncle symbolizes virility, just like John Romero.

At least my first Square game in Europe was Secret of Mana, so I got to play an amazing game way before Mystiq Quest.
Just like Johnny said tho, the soundtrack is excellent.

This game might be way too basic and repetitive, bit there's something about the simplistic art style that I find... comforting.
honestly i think it's fine for a beginner rpg, and i'm a sucker for these old school rpgs.

@@ddjsoyenby It doesn't prepare you for RPGs, so it fails at its job. Final Fantasy 4 does a much better job, on top of being a much better game.
@@okagron I 100% can't argue with that, even though I enjoyed FFMQ quite a bit. FF4, on the other hand, was one of the first RPGs I ever played, and is a fantastic introduction to the genre, much more so than MQ.
Still, though, there's something very charming about MQ, especially the music. I still listen to the OST from time-to-time.

Still can't believe this was Europe's first final fantasy, man we got screwed
FF5 being called "too difficult" when FF1 was released is just laughable.
FFV is so good as well. Will always be one of my favorites in the series because of the job system and freedom you get.
4,5, and 6 are all good
Too be fair, for the NES era they let difficulty slide to make the games seem longer then they actually would for a competent/experienced player.
FF1 NES is piss easy unless you play with thiefs only.
@@EclipsisTenebris Yeah, it's actually pretty easy. It's only "hard" because you tend to not do as many random encounters since encounters in the NES version are so slow compared to the remakes. The remakes are very easy tho, mainly because encounters are a lot faster and the encounter rate is much higher, plus you have MP instead of spell charges so magic users are actually viable this time. FF1 Dawn of Souls was actually the first Final Fantasy I beat, so yeah. Second was FFXII, though I'm also really close to completing OG FFVII and FFIV Advance as well. I've also beat a couple spinoffs like Final Fantasy Explorers and stuff.
The fear in John's voice when he said "I'm paying the price for the final fantasy 3 video" was truly actor worthy.
It's actually cool that Johnny's uncle can be very persuasive and does Twitch.
From what I’ve heard mystic quest was released because Japanese game devs thought that Americans weren’t smart enough to understand complicated rpgs, but I don’t know for certain if that’s true

Originally FF5 was going to be released in America, but since Square thought it would be too Hard, they gave us this instead.
Apparently it is true despite Dungeons & Dragons, an American game, being the inspiration behind video game RPGs.

Honestly, the battle animations and the music are what I love about Mystic Quest. I'm dying for someone to make a good difficulty hack for the game, hopefully one day that can be a reality.

I'm glad to see that John seems to be making a big effort to feature his SGB squadmates in his main reviews.
It would have been a shame if their comedic chemistry disappeared with SGB's upcoming closure.
Luckily, it seems like that won't be the case.
Let’s also not forget that almost all copies of Mystic Quest were sold back in the 90s were bundled with their own strategy guide. Japan really didn’t think too highly of us for JRPGs.
@Tom Ffrench Not really JRPGs just wasn’t really popular in the US at the time and Square wanted to changed that, but thought we we’re too dumb so they went out of their way to make this game simple as possible. Hell it’s part of reason why we didn’t get games like Final Fantasy V initially.
I honestly wonder why they thought we would not like RPG'S? Maybe video games were really just that new in the world.
@@Rodneythehamster2 I can't count how many people I know who refused to play any game if it has turn based fighting, so it's actually pretty understandable for them to think American people don't like RPGs, because in reality they usually don't
To me Mario RPG felt like a better first RPG...it was my first so it slowly got me use to RPG stuff without being a snooze.

I did enjoy Mystic Quest. Sure it was simple but it did some pretty cool things like using weapons to your advantage in the dungeons like bomb walls, use the claw to climb walls, use sword to hit switch ect. Music is of course awesome. It also has the Deku tree before there was a zelda deku tree. Also funny enough i believe its was the cure spell you can use on the final boss does MASSIVE damage. Low level challenge might even be ... a challenge.
I legit love this game. When I was growing up and I wanted to play a game but didn’t want to really think (idle games were not a thing in the 90’s) I’d play this to relax and listen to the awesome music

@@Rabbitlord108 ProJared was innocent tho. Completely. He literally did nothing wrong. Check out his channel again, he has a lot of new videos like his reviews of FFV, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX. (he still doesn't post very often) I'm glad I didn't unsub from him and other channels that got cancelled like Mangs until all the details came out. Luckily I've never been subscribed to a channel that was actually guilty of what they were being cancelled for. All the channels I watched that were "exposed" were able to later prove their innocence. ZeRO too. Unlike some people like LenTotally, Cosmadore, MiniLadd, and LionMaker, the people I watched were completely innocent. Twitter be wack yo.

Even though I have played a lot of RPGs I still love Mystic Quest. The battle mechanics are basic but the puzzle solving is really good. The music is excellent. Love your reviews though.

It's kinda odd that in the pal version it's called Mystic Quest Legends.
That's because Mystic Quest already existed in Europe since that was the localized name for the first Seiken Densetsu (Mana) game on the Gameboy. In America it was called Final Fantasy Adventure, likely so that the FF name would make it sell better. Not sure if that worked or not, but it's actually a pretty good Gameboy game. If you like 2D Zelda, I'd say give it a try.
@@jacobmonks3722 Actually, unlike the first three SaGa games, the first Mana game WAS a Final Fantasy spinoff. There's plenty of FF iconography in the game (Moogles appear as a status condition, and you get a Chocobo buddy who later gets robot legs which allow it to cross water). And the Japanese name was even _Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden._ Later games in the series just moved away from it, and the remake severed its ties completely.

But I am glad the Mana series became more its own thing. It's a very overlooked Square franchise.

Never played Mystic Quest, but it honestly doesn't look all that bad. Overly basic story and gameplay, sure, but at least there's no game breaking bugginess, little to no grinding, the graphics are nice and colorful, and the music rocks. Still, I think I'd have a better time playing similarly simple RPGs, like the various Mario ones.
Long story short, if you want an entry level RPG, play Miitopia.

Exactly. It got me into the Final Fantasy franchise. I'd never even heard of it until my parents bought it. After this game, I got super excited for Final Fantasy 3 (or rather 6).
It took a second watch, but I finally figured out who Benjamin and Phoebe reminded me of; their designs remind me of Gourry and Lina Inverse from Slayers.
Oh man. I remember that anime. That one was so good.

VI is piss-easy, dude. Half the playable characters have OP special attacks right out the gate, and once you get access to Espers, that only makes the game easier. Plus, depending on what version you're playing, you can make nearly any enemy vulnerable to instant death spells due to a bug.
V has the Job System and lots of clever equipment setups you can do, but because of that, the designers compensated by throwing in tons of enemies with "fuck you, you lose" tactics.
It would be hilarious if SE announced a remake of Mystic Quest at E3 and it's actually good
As someone who has a difficult time getting into certain RPGs, due to the amount of knowledge and commitment it takes to playing it, having an easier RPG sounds like a good idea, but here? I don't know, this just seems so overkill with its low difficulty, almost insulting.
Like Johnny says Final Fantasy IV is better. Hell, I'd probably even recommend any Mario RPG as someone's first.

I started with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. It was an great start for my experience with RPG'S.
I absolutely love this game! It could be simple nostalgia, because I played it when I was a kid, but I can honestly say I played Final Fantasy VII and Crono Trigger before playing Mystic Quest. I know it's not a super good game, but it's not necessarily bad. It grows on you. Plus it does have an awesome art style that is unique to this game, and I like how the enemies have different stages of damage, so you can physically see how hurt and damaged they are
This game is my guilty pleasure. I know that it is too basic, but it has this type of charm that I have a soft spot for. Maybe it is too easy, I just see it as relaxing. But thats just my opinion.

Say what you want about how easy it is, but I will forever disagree about this being a bad game. I played it when I was 4. It was the first RPG I ever played, and it got me absolutely addicted to the genre. I would argue that for as new as RPGs were, this was a perfect game for the youngest generation to play and learn basic mechanics, with no clutter anywhere to get confused. It also had secrets etc that where fun to discover.
And the music in this game set the standard for all music in any game I've played since. There's some TERRIBLE music in games, and then there's S tier music. This music is S tier.

I might be looking at it through nostalgia glasses, but I don't remember this game being as bad as people made it out to be. I'd played Dragon Warrior (Quest) 1 - 4, Final Fantasy 1 and 2 (4), and some others. It was... unique. I think I liked the fact it didn't take itself too seriously, so it seemed more like a bedtime story than the weighty "light the four orbs with the barest hint of a story" that so many JRPGs leaned on in that time.
