  • An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to one year in a Dubai jail for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, a campaign group has said.
Marcus Fakana, of Tottenham, “feels abandoned by the British government and Keir Starmer”, Detained in Dubai said.
Radha Stirling, the group’s chief executive, said the sentence was an “utter disgrace” and “an embarrassment to Britain”, adding that “the UK has prioritised trade deals over people’s lives”.
Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by commentator Benedict Spence, who condemns the mother for her actions in getting the young man jailed.

@nadblack6944 The difference is under UAE law, he was classified as an adult & because she was only 17, she was classified as a minor. He was the adult here. He took advantage of her and deserves the light prison sentence he received.

Sorry I don’t want to continue going around with a mindset I’m being hated or discriminated on 24/7 in many instances of social situations with “OTHERS” because someone or many people “LIKE” me are convincing me that this is the case, through rhetoric based on cases such as this dubai case where there has yet to be any indication of the Government discriminating. You really do not know what actions are being taken by the government to help. You are just going by what you think and saying it like it’s so and then adding whataboutism into the mix?? Can’t you see that making such assumptions casually on a regular basis is (low key) reckless and inflammatory to the point of getting “US” incandescent over something that more often than not, is not the actual reality of what you think? And so “WE” anger and frustrate ourselves unnecessarily over and over again building up unnecessary contempt that boils over in ways that are detrimental to “OURSELVES” and “OUR” community.

Fair play to the mother. It's not a bad thing to have values. For her, the belief of no intimacy before marriage would be almost the same as a law. Just because Brits/westerners are happy for their kids to risk pregnancy and diseases from intimacy, doesn't mean the rest of the world has to follow. He broke the law in Dubai by committing an act with a minor so he is facing justice.

How do you put a young man in jail because he had a romance with someone. Should he have asked her, how old are you and/or when do you become 18? The mother took something that should have been kept a secret in her community to telling the entire world that she is an idiot and should be put in jail. When in Rome. I side w Dubai on this when in their country. Casual sex in the West is deplorable, absolute rot w stds, unwanted pregnancy, abortion, regret, rushed marriages, then divorce, unwanted children, broken hearts...absolute rot, here here for cultures trying to keep sex in a sensible boundary that means u r wanted as a wife, u will be protected as will the children...the whole point of marriage is to bond and create a family and protect women and children.

I agree with some of your points but the shocker is that Dubai, despite being very conservative Muslim, also has a high level of prostitution. So the hypocrisy is strong with those Arab countries, especially the wealthy ones.

The law in the UAE is clear that any sexual activities with a person under the age of 18, regardless of consent, is considered a criminal offense. This includes any form of sexual contact. If only the police and courts would uphold the law here in the UK.

    • @tanyagivens4338

They were a few months apart in age. This was something that could have been "ignored" and allowing the daughter to move forward. She chose to file charges once she came home and now the whole world knows that her daughter has had sex and with a black boy. If her goal was to protect her daughter and culture, she failed miserably.

In Dubai it’s permissible for non UAE unmarried couples to have consensual sex if both parties are aged 18 and over. Any consensual extra-marital intercourse is punishable by imprisonment for a period of no less than 6 months irrespective of age hence the reason why the mother waited to leave the country with her daughter to report the crime as the phone messages would have incriminated the daughter too

Forget the age issue, forget the fact that it was consensual. The bottom line is EVEN ADULTS can't have sex with each other if they are NOT MARRIED! We hear these horror stories all the time from these countries. People being banged up for a lot less like simply kissing on the beach. They must have been really thick or just ignorant not to have an incling that it wasn't right. If he wanted to get his leg over, he should have waited for the lads holiday to Ibiza. Silly boy and silly family for choosing a place like Dubai for a holiday and not even discussing this sort of thing with him. And if they did, then even worse! Do the crime, do the time. We all want zero tolerance in the UK, so we can't complain when that's the case in other countries.
