This is what the Eye of Sauron does: "All troops that are under the eye's rays gain 50% extra damage. In addition, Fog of War is removed while scouting." The Eye of Sauron can help you scout out the map quickly, since it can pass through every surface. Also, during battles, it can buff your troops to effectively kill your enemies. The Eye of Sauron doesn't have any disadvantages, beyond the fact that you need to actually move it with your troops to buff them or have attention on it when scouting.
In the battle for middle earth 2, the eye of Sauron also frightens units if they don't have veterancy, leadership, or a hero nearby but i dont remember if its the same for this game.
Another episode, another few tips regarding the mechanics in this game: 1. Rohan Peasants. So the thing about Rohan is they have the best cavalry options in the game, but a very weak infantry game. They don't have any basic melee infantry, instead they have peasants. With the use of the "Draft" power, they become armed and capable of fulfilling the role of swordsmen. While they're probably the weakest melee option in the game, they can be fairly durable units when upgraded, and they can fulfill unit combos as well as attacking weaknesses. They're not perfect units, but they're not bad by any regards. What makes them special is that they *can* repair buildings, which no other melee units can. 2. The Eye of Sauron is a Tier 1 power for the Evil factions, and as you noticed it doesn't seem to be a powerful thing by itself. What it does is summon a unique Hero unit that cannot attack or be attacked, but provides a leadership bonus to nearby allied units, debuffs enemy units, and if they are lower than Rank 2, they are also terrified, which makes units cower in fear instead of attacking. Your Yeomen very briefly showed that. On top of all that, the Eye of Sauron is a detector. While most units can't actually stealth, it's important that the Evil factions have a way to counter stealth units. 3. The red popup on the enemy units during the Westfold mission was the other tier 1 power for the evil factions. That was the War Cry buff, which provides a big chunky buff to the units in the area it's cast. It's important to note that buffs like that stack, so long as they aren't the same type. So cast buffs, terrain buffs, leadership, statues, all good stuff to keep track of. That's actually the hidden power of the Elven Woods in that it denies enemies their buffs, and gives you a decent one at the same time. 4. The "insta-kills" were probably from Trolls hitting a hobbit. The hobbits are very squishy by default, and Trolls hit incredibly hard, especially if they're carrying trees, which gives them a big bonus to their damage. On top of that, they can throw rocks and double as a siege unit. On top of *that*, Trolls tend to enrage when they're about to die, flailing around and hitting any units in melee range before they actually drop. That's part of why archers are a necessity to fighting them, simply to avoid that retaliation.
I started my own playthrough because of this lp and one thing I found is that you can set one ability per hero to autocast by right clicking it so long as it's a buff, heal or single target ability
one thing to note: peasants *can* attack. using the evenstar skill makes them stronger. you can also buy armor/atk for them. they are particularly good at harrassing farms/mills
What an interesting game, thanks for the LP. I'll admit, I never expected 'a mix of 40K and Halo Wars' from a Lord of the Rings strategy game, but it definitely seems worth checking out. I love how the cavalry just smashes through entire ranks of footmen, very Rome: Total War. Crushingly sad to see in later TW games the cavalry stop politely in front of infantry and get bogged down forever. They should have an effect similar to tanks in Command and Conquer, very satisfying here.
I don't think anyones has mentioned this yet, but passive xp gain exists in this game. If there are 2 of your units neat each other, and one of those units is killing an enemy unit while the other one is not doing anything (for example one unit is atracking at range while the other one is a meelee unit), the idle unit earns a part of the xp earned by the unit that is killing the enemy. So in this case you could have kept the hobbits in the back but close to the elven archer and they would have earned a part of the xp earned by the archers ^^
To answer your question at the beginning video Jay, while saruman's army was attacking Rohan, sauron's army was attacking Osgiliath so gondor's army was occupied and could not send aid to Rohan
The + 10% resources and others won't really matter to you later cause after every mission your army is saved for the next and as your heroes become stronger they can take armies by themselves so a good army + strong hero can win almost any map. For Rohan, i just got as much command as I could upgraded my Rohirrim army then charged em on every map into the enemy xD.
You're going to want to get as many riders as possible in Eomer's army and waste time on one of the generic missions just getting them all properly upgraded, not only because the units will retain the upgrades individually but they also become the reinforcing army when you defend helm's deep and if I remember correctly also show up during the battle of Minas Tirith (though I could be mistaken on that one as it has been years since I played)
I finished recording Helm's Deep last night and up until that point the game dumps a bunch of free Peasant Battalions onto you, which I initially thought was a bummer, but engaging Pikemen with the infantry ball first is actually incredible and you suffer no casualties!
very important tip: rank 2 battalions can replace dead units over time, heal is instant so that's better. evil races actually rely only on banners (r2) to replace dead units
For some maps, wells and statues will be great; provides both healing/regeneration of soldiers and a constant buff to your units. This would probably be best for some defense missions and for some of the skirmish maps for withstanding the intial rush. Pikes will murder any cavalry that runs through them; this includes heroes. A trick you can use is to tell your cavalry to stop just before they make contact; that way they won't trample into the pike and die. But you want infantry or archers to deal with the pikes, really. So as Rohan, that'd be Elven Archers and the Rohirrim Horse Archer. Always take the time to upgrade your units if you can; you can destroy most of the buildings in the enemy camp except for one or two, and then camp it while you build up resources for the upgrades you need. You may need to get creative with some though. Gondor's blacksmith needs to upgrade to get all its availble ones; it will passively generate resources like a resource building. I could be wrong about this though. Rohan's upgrade building as you probably know by now doesn't need that. Same with Isengard's. May put several advice comments on the videos. So apologies if there's any redudant info that others have already pointed out.
Jay, if you take anything away from the comment section. Let it be that your max supplies will 300. Second, pikes are the worst, so if you want to win against them with cav you'll need some fire arrowed rohan cav archers.
Peasants don't only repair buildings. They can fight right away, but once you can build an armory, you can actually arm them up, upgrade, they can do some damage. Useful against pikemen but overall less versatile than an armed and upgraded cavalry.
wish there would be an actual remaster of this game. And yup as soon as your squads reach level 2 onwards, any losses within the squad will gradually be replenished automatically for free outside of combat, starting with your Banner Carrier (which is worth free supply) then followed by your dead members of the squad. And later once you get the capability to build blacksmiths, upgrade them with Heavy Armor and Forged Swords as these ALSO carry over to subsequent missions with the veterancy promotions. Which is why I always feel the need to carry over as many fully upgraded veteran squads as you can.
The eye of Sauron depending on the patch your using can ether both buff or debuff units its ether an defense debuff for you or an attackbuff for them, also good campaing gets a cap if command points at 300 and evil gets 600 all units carry forward expect seidge units. Full squads carry over, banner units come in at rank 2 and that means they self replicate dead units, peasants are a good oh shit unit plus they can combine with archer units to whve a melee front line which if your wondering ultimately cuts down micro managing units because ranged units will always have a melee support with it
It will take some time to getting used to this game it's very old and it's playstyle is still rocking hehe GG M8 GN Lookig forward to next week, Also you can take the entire map before launching the final assualt if your completionism mind kicks in :)
Moria / Mordor Trolls are dangerous for both Men and Orcs when they are near to death. I usually don't put the Hobbits too close in a fight with Trolls, leaving only ranged or powerful melee heroes in the front. Also, the Monster section involves Trolls, Warg Raiders and Mûmakil. They are the counterpart for Rohan and Gondor cavalry - powerful against melee soldiers despite the Monsters can out match the cavalry, but they are weak against pikemen and archers. Also, if your archers has the Flaming Arrows purchased, you can burn the Mûmakil bunkers - causing them to panic and wreak havoc to anything in their path before they die. And if you charge with your cavalry to a formation of pikemen lowering their lances forward, you are going to lose your entire army of cavalry. For Rohan, I always go for Riders and Archer Riders. Yeomen Archers are good, but the Lorien Elven Warrior are powerful. Peasants are good but in long run they are worthless to confront big armies, even using that Power Ring to arm Peasants. The Eye of Sauron acts like a Hero to increase leadership for Orc hordes and the Easterlings and Haradrim armies, reveal stealthy enemies and reducing the moral for enemy soldiers - making them cower in fear. The red circle with a war cry around Mordor / Isengard soldiers is War Chant - it increases the damage of Mordor / Isengard hordes.
If memory serves, there is no way for the good guys to "retire units" besides letting them die in battle the evil forces have a way to recycle their forces for some of the cost back though.
I recomend you take the hobbits to get all the gold and then put them stealthed as far away as possible. One troll was on the bridge and swated your hobbits who were melee and they got one shoted.
You can also use them to absorb damage that dealt to your archers by combining them with archers. 1 or 2 to take damage mostly usefull in order to defend your more expansive soldiers.
So there are the main Missions which are battles from the Movies , those must be played , but in the inbetween, the Armies you build carry on to the next mission so be careful of your armie comp . Command for Good campaign is maxed at 300 ,and Evil at 600 . As for gameplay wise . you seem to be getting the hang of it ,just a tip settlement farms are 100 resources cheeper and start lvl 2 ,so you get more income ,mostly cavalry is the best for Rohan ,but easily countered by Isengards Pikemen, while peasants are the weakest infantry .Bonus objectives are neet but don't do much other than giving you extra points in the end screen .I realy am looking forward to next videos Edit: For hero abilities that need to be casted on a target you can just right click on it and the Heroe will choose the first enemy it sees and cast it (as long as the enemy doesn't die first )

The eye of sauron gives enemies buffs and causes terror on units without leaders nearby. The Ai doesn't realy know how to use it honestly so its silly.
Jay you should really upgrade your army in one region and then move with those guys from one region to another and gain veterancy. This is the best thing to do when you have to defend minas tirith and helms deep.

don't fill your command limit immediately, there will later be upgrades that you will need to level up stables and archery range to level 2 to get and you won't be able to if you are at the limit also cavalery is superior for Rohan :D I think the Eye of Sauron removes leadership or veterancy bonuses

I like how diagetic the eye of Sauron is; the player is as unnerved by it as the characters in game. "That can't be good."
Thank you!
In the battle for middle earth 2, the eye of Sauron also frightens units if they don't have veterancy, leadership, or a hero nearby but i dont remember if its the same for this game.
