  • Mint is loved by bees. Here is the proof. The plant helps support bee hives. It is easy to grow and takes little care. The bonus to supporting bees and their hives is that they will gladly pollinate your garden in return. Plus mint brings in other pollinators and predatory insects.

I have read that mountain mint, particularly, should be planted next to the hives because its essential oils are supposed to be a deterrent to varroa mites.

Yesterday I had to let 4 bees out of a closed pumpkin blossom. If you have big blossoms like squash, be sure to check and make sure the few bees you have are not trapped when they close up! 🐝🐝🐝🐝

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I was checking for squash eggs and saw what looked like a bee trying to get out of the only blossom. There were 4 trapped inside! I think the heat is causing the blooms to close early. First heard about this happening last year on another forum.

I literally just experienced that for the first time, about an hour ago, while on my deck pruning some leaves off of my cucumber plant and right next to it, a container growing yellow squash. I was looking at the new growth coming up inside the yellow squash plant, and a big bloom was partially closed, and it was a male flower, so I was snipping it off, and I spotted a honeybee inside! Spread the closed flower open and out it flew! 🐝🐝🐝

Pollen is the protein that honeybees use and mixed with nectar they make “bee bread” that they feed baby bees. Nectar is what they bring in to make honey for their carbohydrates. Mint-especially peppermint- helps to deter some pests that cause colony failure in bees.

Another low effort, but important honey bee food source is maple trees. Silver and red maple flower in Feb and Mar when they really need the food after winter. If they can't make it out of winter, they won't be around to pollinate your garden in the summer.

Thanks for the info on mint and bees. In my garden, the honeybees love chives, oregano, Liatris aka Blazing Star, bee balm and salvias. I grow dahlias and last year the bees had a favorite and I saw 5 on a flower at once. I love to hear the hum of bees in the garden.

Interesting fact: Bee populations are NOT decreasing. Bee populations around the world are growing year by year.
However, that is overwhelmingly because the invasive european honey bee is taking over. From a combination of wild bees that are taking over, and agricultural honey bees that are grown by farmers for certain crops like almond trees.
But wild native bee populations are plummeting. These native bees are ten times better at pollinating than honeybees are. And some plants can ONLY be pollinated by native bees, because they have evolved special pollination systems that only a particular type of native bee has evolved alongside to pollinate. So if these bees are wiped out, the plant may never be able to reproduce in the wild ever again and will be lost.
We need to focus a lot more on native wild bees, and not the european honey bees.

I would love for my spearmint to grow. I've planted it twice and all I have is a few springs. I also planted lemon balm for the same reason. It's still in the same little clump it started out in. No growth, no spread. My peppermint got dug up by the dog and when I replanted it back in the ground it went crazy. Maybe I should let the dogs dig again.

I never had luck with mint... I'm trying the 2nd time this year with peppermint, as the last one just wilted for unknown reasons, regardless I tried to keep it moist or drier or sunny or shady. It finally died with my relief. The 2nd one is currently following the steps of previous one... Oh, I wish that I have the chance to complain about its invasion, only in my dreams so far! Any one has idea why??? I'm in zone 9a.

Try spearmint. I’m in zone 5, and it grows & spreads effortlessly where peppermint failed. I also have catnip everywhere; it re-seeds and spreads even more than spearmint, so it’s more “weedy”.

I had crazy mint last year in a lovely 10 gallon pot.. it died thru the winter.. When I emptied the pot, there were dozens of grubs in it.. 🤢 chickens took care of them, and I salvaged a bitty sprout of mint that’s not a few inches tall.

I bought some 50 gallon plastic barrels and was thinking if I cut them in half like I do for tomato plants could I use one to keep the mint in control in one of these? I usually put a few cardboard layers underneath to control weeds or grass from growing thru the container so would that keep the mint from rooting also?

Mint is aggressive. Invasive is a specific term used by state agencies to to designate non native plants that outcompete natives on public lands and are suggested to not be grown or sold. Please use this term properly. There is a lot of confusion across the gardening community about invasives and misuse of this term continues that confusion

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 года назад

A prolific or unwanted spread. Thats how I am using Invasive. Its not just for the bigger issue used by states. Hops is super invasive in the garden. Its not aggressive. Anyway words have multiple definitions. I think the context of the video or document is more important. I think you are looking for a collection of terms like non native invasive species. Thats less confusing than a single word.
