The effects of having the British Royal family as head of state means that in the event of another World War, a special code called “The Royal Prerogative” can be issued.
This means that the Royal family would have a more direct leadership of the country until “The Royal Prerogative” was dis-continued.

@@TPLStaden, the Royal Prerogative can the reigning monarch at the time the power to pass certain legislation and bypass parliament. It is optional of course and parliament has to vote on wether to put the RP into effect.
All it does is gives the monarch their old job back for a time.
The reason for its existence stems back to WWI when King George V, king of Britain and emperor of India, was gifted a higher power by the parliament. This served two things,1) King George V knew how to run the country and could take some burden of Parliaments shoulders. And, 2) King George V was known as “the people’s King” and it was an inspiration to Britons around the globe to know that they were lead by the man they loved and fought for.

    • @TPLStaden
      @TPLStaden 3 года назад +8

      @@lordbonney9779 that’s mostly inaccurate.
Royal prerogative is not a special code, it’s the crown’s residual power over matters which the Parliament has not legislated on and is exercised by the crown on the advice of their ministers but never on monarch’s own initiative even in times of war. For example, it is the Queen’s prerogative to grant honours and pardons (both are examples of royal prerogative and there’s more) but these are never exercised by the monarch without the advice of the ministers. Royal prerogative has existed since medieval times, it’s not a concept that was invented or granted during WWI. Prerogative can never be used to bypass parliament, this was settled in 1610 by the Case of Proclamations: “the King hath no prerogative but that which the law of the land allows him” - this does not mean the monarch cannot be put in charge of running the country by the Parliament if it so wishes but that is only in theory and unlikely in reality. Of course, all of this applies only to the United Kingdom. As for what you’re describing about granting power during WW1 was an Act of Parliament known as the Defence of the Realm Act (1914), it gave substantial power to the King-in-council - that is in reality to the privy council and not the monarch who only approves what his privy counsellors advice him to do. Defence of the
Realm Act was an Act of Parliament and not a prerogative.
In the Commonwealth Realms, it is the Queen’s viceroy (in most cases the Governor-general) in the relevant state that exercises her royal prerogative. Governor-general is appointed by the Prime Minister of that state so for example the Prime Minister of Canada appoints the Governor-General of Canada and so on - this means the Queen has no real power in any of those 16 countries and the real power is exercised by their Parliaments.
Hope that cleared it up, apologies if it came off as confrontational. I’m studying British constitutional law and I have an exam coming up soon so to be able to explain this to someone and have them understand it would mean that the way I explain is good enough for my examiner :)

They are openly claiming on US television that the commonwealth is an empire which needs to be disbanded because it is inappropriate in the modern world. Suspect what they mean is ''if we aren't a member then nobody should be a member because we say so'' but they are getting rather heated about it at present. When one Aussie newscaster was speaking to one of the seppo ones they were shouting over him about empires and how terrible it is that the UK still have one under a different name and how King Charles literally rules all these countries. Another channel were shouting down a UK journalist over the same subject while a Harvard professor got the same treatment over the subject a well from yet another channel.

@@ABC1701A Really??? I've visited the US about five times starting in 1979 and most recently in 2018.
Every time I'm staggered by the ignorance about the rest of the world. I've even met one man in Los Angeles who didn't know where Canada was and another in El Paso who'd lived there all his life and had never thought about Mexico. I had just arrived the day before after 3 weeks in Mexico which I really enjoyed and didn't see enough of.
An Englishman I met in the US in 1979 said he'd met people in the South who'd never heard of England???
In 1979 very few knew anything about New Zealand (one thought it was near Greenland) but since 'The Lord of the Rings" movies it's changed a bit although I don't have hairy feet and I'm 183cm tall (that's 6 feet for those in one of the three countries who still use imperial measurements. Another thing that staggers me about the US. The other two are obscure African nations)

@@keithtonkin6959 When my daughter first read that the Queen had died I looked on RUclips for a news channel confirmation and found ABC (which I mistakenly though was the Australian channel). The announcer stated that the Queen had died and then immediately went into a diatribe about it now being time for King Charles to dismantle the empire/commonwealth - both words were used indeterminately - because ruling all those people as a king was unsuitable in today's world. Totally ignoring the realms in the commonwealth there are also FIVE other countries who are monarchies in their own right (and currently people in Malaysia seems to be annoyed at the US claims as well) as well as the 36 republics who are also probably rather perplexed to discover they are really a monarchy (certainly there are some vocal South African's and Pakistanis on these claims). They are currently fixated on this supposed empire but while their rantings may appeal to the ignorant base in the US they are actually showing the rest of the world just how badly educated they are, aided by the fact they are also apparently illiterate and unable to read/look at the internet to gain some basic facts. Very very sad and they seriously risk damaging their relationship with not only their neighbour Canada but with one country that they always call on to bail them out when their military endeavours go disastrously wrong (Afghanistan and Iraq for example).
I suspect they are trying to take attention away from problems in the US but they are also possibly engaged in stoking racial tensions - a quick glance tells them that there are a number of countries in Africa as well as Asia - which seems to be a national pastime in the US currently. Some began as long ago as 2016 - a couple of newspapers in New York apparently - and it's been taken up the main stream media channels, probably because it distracts the audience and gets them all riled up about things they know nothing about, and which have nothing to do with them in the first place.
Certainly there are more and more USAmericans speaking out on social media claiming that Canada is taking advantage - something to do with the rewritten trade deal that Trump arranged - and why should the US subsidise the rest of the world militarily (ignoring which country starts the wars in the first place) while also happily telling other countries - mainly the UK, Australia, Canada and Germany - how they should run their countries (internal and external affairs). I don't think it is helped by others who kindly!!! explain to them the facts (most recently that despite their huge contributions to the war in Ukraine when it comes to % of GDP the US is actually well down the list (even NZ is above them) when it comes to contributions) generally using the language you would use in primary - senior level - school (as it was when I went to school back in the 60s at least). At least NZ has escaped their attention for the most part, possibly because they really don't know where it is, some seem to think it is a part of Australia believe it or not. Hopefully that will continue.
The pity is that there are plenty of USAmericans who are that self-centred and who do know what is happening elsewhere, but most seem to have left the country to live elsewhere - quite a community here in Ireland, the majority aren't even plastic paddies either.

Commonwealth countries do 50% more trade with each other than with none commonwealth countries.
Richer commonwealth countries support poorer ones with economic aid.
And it also plays an interesting role in the UN, since the U.K. can VETO any decision (and uses this to help smaller commonwealth countries) and the U.K. can pass any decision in the UN (if it’s not vetoed) with the commonwealths support.
Also joining an organisation that puts pressure on its member states be a stable democracy that respects human rights and the free market is a great sign for investors.
Commonwealth nations are also much more likely to invest in each other’s economies.

Each of the Commonwealth realms have their own distinct crowns which are all separate entities from the crown of the UK. They all just have the same person who wears them. The royal family would likely move to Canada. As for the other countries of the commonwealth that are republics, nothing will change.
