    You could use a copper or aluminum plate and not have to worry about welding it to the piece

    Can you re-use the iron template? Is it fouled from the weld slag?

      That template has been used for about 30 years. So yes. The little bits of slag on it helps prevent it from sticking....a little bit.

      Just a piece of scrap mild steel.
