Great explanation and demonstration of varifocals and the pros and cons.
I like your scientific approach to get the most accurate measurements with the Visufit 1000.
I had my eye test last October at Specsavers. It all felt a bit rushed. I just picked the first rectangular frame, had the pen dots on the lenses, chose the most expensive option and was really glad to leave. Luckily they work fine. Next time if I can't get to your store I'm definitely going somewhere with digital equipment. That's why I'm kind of hooked on watching your channel Rob. What was a chore and pretty boring topic has become fascinating and engrossing really. Thanks 😀

WOW! What an excellent explanation! I am a thirty-eight year old professional golfer and bought my first pair of progressives from Costco about a month ago. I simply could not adapt even though I have a very minimal prescription. I went to an independent ophthalmologist today who fitted me with Varilux X lenses. The difference between her exam and the Costco optometrist's was monumental. The doctor today spent forever measuring pupillary distance, segment height, etc., whereas Costco spent about 15 seconds. Thank you for your incredibly informative video. I wish I had you there with me today to pick out frames! Despite your absence, my wife and I chose a very nice pair of Oliver Peoples, lol. Again, thank you for this very informative, dumbed down explanation of how progressives work.

Excellent job Robert. This was very good, smooth, and clear presentation with proper detail on these lenses. I loved that you actually used visuals and allowed us to see and better understand the differences and limitations. I am currently struggling with two new pair of glasses with Hoya lenses. I had no issues with glasses 2 years ago and according to my doctor my vision has barely changed. My sport , wrap around RX glasses with Shamir lenses work perfectly but done by different lab. I hope my Hoya lab can figure out why their lenses are not allowing me to see clearly intermediate nor short distance. Your presentation gave me better idea of what questions to ask and how should my lenses be set up.
Keep up the good work, keep us updated on newest technology and perhaps some videos on increasingly popular options of sport wrap around and mirror coatings ( flash and solid) and how a person see from inside, how the glasses look from outside and what colors are not appropriate for specific light conditions. Also, what are the innovations, if any, for ordering glasses via internet from other optical centers? Distance ordering allows better access to lens brands that one may not have locally. Thank You again for your videos.

Thank you for showing me about varifocal lenses visually. Explanations are all brilliant but with out visualization, what's being said is difficult to comprehend for some people. Showing people what is being explained makes life easier for people to comprehend. My first experience 5 years ago with varifocal lenses left me angry, frustrated and bitter because i couldn't see as the bit i needed to see with was the smallest area possible with blur on either side which was making me sick and dizzy amongst the anger and frustration. i went back to the opticians and the customer service was horrendous the woman was very rude which was causing my anxiety and frustration worse. Its taken me 5 years to go back to another Optician and ive brought new varifocal lenses with i hope are the widest area possible on my middle area. but i still left there worried as my comprehension on the lenses was still muddled.. finding your video has helped me understand a heck of a lot more being able to see what was being explained.. so thank you

Hi. Great explanation. I have recently had my first pair of varifocals from Specsavers. I've already had the frame changed as I just couldn't get on with them. Now I'm getting more used to them, I did go for the top range so less distortion, but i feel they are much better if I raise/tilt the frame about 1cm above my ears. They did the pen spot, no other measuring. Also I think digital lenses would suit me better but this wasn't mentioned. It's very expensive to not be quite right.

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  3 года назад +3

When you're lifting the frame above your ears, that is adjusting the pantoscoptic tilt which I mentioned later on in the video. So ask them to adjust the panto and that should help. Good luck :)

I was an Astigamatic and once the Presbyopia set in, I began wearing progressive that I wore for the next 25 yrs; almost all the time, I used Essilor, the last one was Comfort, except the last time when I went for Zeiss because of a friend.
I have had Cataract surgery one half years back and I went for the Toric Lens and dealing with Distance Vision and began wearing Reading Glasses, +2.5 Dioptres both sides for the close work.
During the last check up, I have now been advised to wear --1.25 Dioptres for the Distance Vision in addition to the lenses for the reading purposes.
How would compare Essilor and Zeiss Lenses? I find now the Essilor has come out with XR and X series also. How do these two compare with Zeiss Smart Life? Does Zeiss also have different types of Progressives Liberty/Physio at one end XR and X at the other?

Thank you. That's a clear description that has really helped me to understand a bit more about the way that Varifocals work. I'm still lacking some understanding so perhaps you can offer some help for a new glasses wearer? - I've probably needed them for years but recently got I have glasses for distance only, not strong prescriptions. My close up vision is fine without glasses. I'm struggling with text on a TV ( eg TV guides) at around 2m or more. The single vision glasses clear the TV picture but then I can't read text on my phone. I think I'm confused because for close up I would need no prescription on the lens as far as I can tell.
Are Varifocals the solution, and what kind? The standard ones or something like the office type? Or just bifocals? Do you have a posting about this subject?
Sph Cyl Axis VA Add N
    RE -2.00 -1.25 105 6/6 +2.25 N5
    LE -1.00 -0.75 95 6/6 +2.25 N5

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  2 года назад +1

To work out your reading prescription you would add the 2.25 to the SPH power in each eye. You should notice that this makes your reading prescription for your right eye +0.25 but for your left eye +1.25. So there would be a small prescription for reading at the bottom of your glasses.
So varifocals are the best option for you. You need a good type because of the large difference between your 2 eyes - one which compensates for binocular vision (not all do).
Come and visit us and we will get you sorted.

@@a1smith All I can say is that according to the eye test you had, your vision isn't perfect for reading even if it seems to be. You will probably notice a different focal length if you open one eye at a time when focussing on near objects. Prescription reading glasses or varifocals would bring both eyes perfectly in focus simultaneously at any distance, allowing your eyes to work binocularly.
It's normal to have the same compensation applied to both eyes as generally the muscles in our eyes deteriorate at the same rate (although not always).

I am left with mild astigmatism in both eyes and a short distance lens in one eye and a long in the other. The hope was that my eyes would adapt to “monocular” vision but appear to be stubbornly binocular. I can see at both long and short distances, but there is distortion, esp close up. Such is the dominance of my right (right, long distance) eye my consultant has recommended that to see at all distances I either purchase multiple lenses or “executive trifocals” as I would find the distortion of Varifocals too much. I’ve just paid some £460 for new lenses
I was told they are their boost lenses - can’t find the actual definition
While walking I’m getting sea sick.
The distortion skews everything outside the focal area
I said I need the glasses for computer work
The area on a screen that is in focus is around 6 cm width. Around two to three words in focus with everything thing else very blurred
As I move my head the words tilt at the top opposite to my movement
I can barely see anything in focus.
It’s like looking through the wrong end of binoculars and seeing a very small area with head movevement like looking through two panes on glass that distort either side of centre.
It’s like looking through a spy hole.
To read anything on the screen in moving my head in 3 planes to find focus every 6 cm.
I’m seeing a lot of word shadows too.
To read a standard paperback, I have to move my head three time to read a line of text
    It’s exhausting!
I went to a respectable independent and was told that these were quality lenses.
( my previous glasses bought elsewhere were cheaper including the frame that I’ve reused)
Is there a way that I can determine the width of the part of the lens that contains the focal corridor?
As they are closed over Christmas I’ll go back in the new year, but I’d rather be armed with some evidence that tge quality of these progressive lenses are not as they have suggested.
    Thanks

It's possible that even the best lenses don't work for certain individuals, so it doesn't necessarily mean your lenses are bad quality.
However, the prescription, the lens positioning and the lens design are all crucial... were you measured using a digital measuring system? Are you confident in the eye test? TBH it's red flag if the lens brand you were getting wasn't discussed.

I have finally decided I take a chance and change from my lined trifocals to a high quality progressive lense. This excellent video appears to show that the intermediate zone would be sufficiently deep vertically to encompass more than just a single line of vertical text or just a narrow sliver of an object. Am I correct in assuming this? I would hate to pay a lot and then be disappointed.

    • @thespectaclefactory

It really depends on how the lens is set up. I would be very careful and really make sure you try them with a very good optician, or I think you might be disappointed...
There will be positives to making the switch but there will also be negatives, so be prepared for that.
I would say the vertical size of the intermediate probably will be ok - it's the horizontal width you might have an issue with.

They have to exist because there is a change in focus within a single optical lens, according to the Minkwitz equation (the rate of change in one direction is proportional to the rate of change perpendicular). It is the laws of physics I'm afraid.

Hello, good video. If i cover one eye (not close it) when i am reading, should the uncovered eye stay focused on the word as i find that mine isn't but is if i turn my head slightly, which leads me to think that the prescription is in the wrong position, off set a little.,and vice versa. The optician assistant says that's ok as the eyes work together and not individually which seems a cop out to me. Surely they should both be in focus on an individual basis which is the whole point isn't it. Hope this makes sense.

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  Год назад +1

As long as the focus is OK with both eyes open, then that is the main thing. Many people have a dominant eye which takes over during concentrated activites, and the other eye is not as clear when compared. However, if you are very one eye dominant, the varifocal lenses can be optimised on the 'inset' so that the reading zone is in the right place horizontally.

Only the bottom few mils of the lens is good for reading. I have to tilt my head right back for computer monitors or adjust to incorrect DSE position, and again, it's a really small sweet spot to the point of being stupid. Far distance is the same as near, in that literally it's only just below the frame that is fully focused. Is this normal? Surely there should be better use of the lens space at the top and bottom. I mean an optician i went to, made me a pair that I cant at all use for computer (and that was no 1 desire), said that the lenses only made to the distance and the reading subscription and the technology will sort out the middle measurement. Sounded not right! as I don't then understand why they would measure the middle distance at eye test?? would be a waste of time. but I haven't been able to find information yet about how they make the lenses from the eye test..... what is the truth? massive thanks

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  2 года назад +1

Hi Beatrix, your optician is right that when manufacturing varifocals, only the far distance and close up prescription is specified. The reason is that technically you have a different prescription for every single distance between those two parameters. And in the varifocal lens it has a different focus to correct each of those prescriptions at every point as you go up and down the lens.
This is also why varifocals aren't great for using for long periods at a specific intermediate (mid range) distance. However, some are better than others! The SmartLife lenses I mentioned in this video are probably the best for computer use.
The reason they measure the middle distance during the eye test is in case you want a pair of glasses purely for that - which is what I would recommend if you are doing a lot of computer work (I did mention this in the video).

I went to this independent optician already for a second advise and already been through a few tricks with another one (height adjustments). Only when I raised concerns again they said they could adjust reading area 'heights' and change the lense to an even more expensive one that can flatten the lens and make it more 'real' to view through - also my eyes wont look so big in them. But no more info of make or other choices...... That's when I started reading about varifocals and found your videos.

ps: i have office lenses, the old pair, but still OK to use and better than my new varifocal. My previous varifocal was a dream to use, but I broke it in Covid time and my eye sight deteriorated since. So I do know you can have varifocal that are very comfortable, I experienced it...Anyway, THANK YOU SO MUCH for reading my questions/story.

Have you tried Varilux varifocal lenses? If so, what are your thoughts on that type?

Yeah, in hindsight you're right! I've either stopped using music or reduced the volume a lot in the newer videos. Thanks for the feedback

Im fed up with not getting the approximate cost of varifocals. Is this so you have to barter for them or that they can add on this or that to raise the cost. If so stuff your glasses i will buy cheap ready made glass for a hundred baht or so. bugger opticians.

I'm sorry that this free advice annoyed you. Varifocals range in price massively so it's the first thing you should discuss with your optician

This story isn't over yet but well over 10 years ago my (independent) optician recommended me varifocal lenses. After an old fashion eye test (well before the current auto hi tech type machines they use now) and using Nikon lenses, I was happy the first moment I put them on. I bought a second spare frame and he fitted them out with the same prescription and make of Nikon lenses. Again, perfect. Good focus, close, medium and long distances. No blurring at the sides. Consistent at all viewing angles. Last month, after many years, the temple arm on one pair finally broke. My optician sadly retired last year. I happened to go to Boots. I should of asked, please copy my existing prescription but I didn't. I had a full hi tech bells and whistles eye test - yes, a change to my my current prescription. I chose the more expensive Zeiss lenses - they were recommended to me in the shop. I picked them up last week. I didn't take them home. They were awful on many levels. The reading zone came up the lens too far on my left eye and the right, everything looked diminished in size. Looking sideways left and right was blurred. I shall now ask Boots to simply copy my old perscription and hopefully I'll be happy. Is the Nikon zone arrangement better than Zeiss's, yes/no? If so, why is there a difference? I don't know but I now understand there are huge inconsistencies in varifocal lenses and there shouldn't be. At these asking prices, the industry needs to tighten up and make standards that are adhered to. Otherwise it's a time wasting hit and miss game.

@@amitandutube Hi, I asked for a full refund and received one. The whole episode has left me unimpressed by eye tests, even when using hi-tech testing equipment. So, no replacement yet and my urgency to replace my old pair has evaporated I'm afraid to say. I'll take breath and try again one day but I'm not in a hurry to.

@@patrickculleton9939 thanks for the reply. My current varifocals was done manually with the “market dot on lens” method but has worked well! Maybe it’s because I’ve got the Varilux X series or maybe a low prescription. I need a new pair now and am nervous everyone’s using these hi tech digital machines now.

@@patrickculleton9939 SOmeone with long experience in this working sector, and decent wits, told me that a lot of those who use the new revolutionary measuring instruments aren't up to using them properly/interpreting the results right, and they (not the instruments, but the optometrists who use them) end up by causing more troubles vis-a-vis an old-fashioned measurement done by even an optometrist at the same level as their own.
I mean, it looks like using these advanced "tenth of millimiter" machinery's results requires more wits than the old-fashioned methods. And wits aren't exactly widespread, it also appears.

I just returned my progressive lenses. They were horrible. The viewing
fields for the middle and bottom were incredibly short and very
narrow...not at all as wide as this woman is showing on screen. I had to
constantly move my head to read a sentence and keep all the words sharp
and clear. Pain in the a**. I went back to my line bifocals.

you should give youself some time, I experience this innitially but after some time I feel comfortable at time I forgot that I am wearing glasses, usually there are three tier and the different is the wide area of the middle part, the wider usually are more expensive , I get to purchased the middle tier which cost appx usd1K including frame, from my personal experience the Optician play a very important role too, ps. in my country Eye Doctor and optician can do the eyes test, I understand in some country only Eye Doctor can give a precription, Cheers
