    can you do a video on mixing the Black Widow paint

  • @baldymcgee6

    Hi Brad, job well done. Did you have to finish the drywall before painting by removing any textures or previous paint?

    Hi Brad..
    One question. I see that the screen size kinda looks like 4:8 ratio but then later when your video were showing animation movie scenes, the screen size looked 16:9 i.e., exactly as it looks in a real theater.. a complete wide screen appearance that I do love.
    Can you tell me how exactly you did change this screen appearance from 4:8 to a real wide screen mode. I want to do that in my home theater too.
    thanks for your help.

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  9 лет назад +3

      +Vishal Joshi Hi Vishal, I actually didn't change anything - it was simply the source video which I was feeding it. The animated movie was a conventional 16:9 movie, but a lot of Australian TV is broadcast at 4:3.
      The only thing you have to be weary of, when considering that you may be feeding many different aspect ratios to your projector, is make sure that you have positioned your projector to account for the "tallest" video (for me, this was 4:3 video) which you will be showing. If you do not do this, your "tallest" videos may be projected onto the ceiling.

    Could you share the information for the light that is mounted on the ceiling? It is gorgeous, thanks!

      @bradh81  8 лет назад

      +JR Heckler just regular spotlights... no info on them sorry (they were there when we moved in).
      They do have fancy touch controls though which allow them to be dimmed to any level... pretty cool.

    I have the same screen size on panasonic pt ah6000 but mine is 3x LCD and ur is XDSR. I wonder if there is a significant difference
    also i have a white wall with standard white paint on it

    What size is that projecting?

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  8 лет назад +1

      +Guillermo Martin I think in its final configuration the screen was 3.4m wide. It can go wider, but it was limited by the vertical image height. If I adjusted the zoom to give a wider image (for 16:9 movies), when I switched to 4:3 videos, it would project onto the ceiling (which is very distracting).

      asfdgdg get the colour code and see if a paint store can mix the color for you.

  • @JohnMcMahan5
    @JohnMcMahan5 9 лет назад

    Awesome idea to to paint the wall that color. It looks like it creates a natural masking system to accommodate 16:9, 2.35:1, and 4:3. I can't see any black bars in the video. Does it create black bars in the room when watching live with the lights off? Thanks.

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  8 лет назад +1

      +John McMahan Not really... I read somewhere that having a black border will give the impression of a contrast-ier image (which is preferable), but of course, having black bars locks you into a particular screen size and screen aspect. And that's something that I really wanted to avoid due to the variety of media used on the projector.

    Hey Brad,
    question about the paint. The wiki page says 'tinted to Milton Moon (this is a dulex colour), but the link they provide is to a white paint. I looked up milton moon on the dulex site, and it's a sliverly grey. a little confuse what they mean by that.

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  9 лет назад +1

      +Edward Summerhays They link you to the white base paint, because that's what you have to pick up from the shelves, then take it to the tinting counter at Bunnings so that you can get them to tint it to the Milton Moon colour (for free) :).

    how does the painted wall compared to an actual screen? the colors are really nice, which is that black paint on the ceiling? when lights are off the room is completely dark.
    I am using a JVC projector now but i like the color pop for the sony's, only reason i am with the jvc is because the lens memory(i am using a scope screen zoomed to fill the screen for scope image) if i can paint the wall like you did i dont need to worry about changing image ratios. is there any light leaking in the sides when projecting? usually the black velvet(screen frame) block the spreading light, how it is in this case? Cheers

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  9 лет назад

      +Anand Ramakrishnan Sorry, I never used it when the screen was in place, so I can't comment on that.
      The black ceiling paint was also already there when I bought the house - it was a matte finish though, so no light reflection at all really.

    Just wondering what you ratio of the mix was and what brands you used. I'm looking at getting a hw45es which I would think would look similar. Your screen looks great with the ratio of mix you used.

    Hi Brad, I'm new to this stuff and I was going to buy a screen for my projector but then I saw your video and I'm just wondering, how do I apply the paints? does 1 go before the other? or do I mix them first then apply it? and If i have to mix it, What is the ratio?
    Thank you.

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  8 лет назад +1

      +Rushi Patel You mix it first, then apply. The ratio is 4:1... so 4 parts of dulux paint to 1 part of aluminium fines paint.

    HI Brad can you tell me the formula for a 100 inch screen? I know is flat white aluminum base and don't know the other one plus the amount of each ?thanks!

    • @psisky
      @psisky 8 лет назад +1

      +juan castillo If you delve online you'll get tons of info about the mixing, but I've just tried to simplify it for my own use and this is what I've managed understand so far. The recipes I've been looking at say 1 part Auto Air Aluminium Fine (AAA-F) to 4 parts matt paint. But the matt shade you need depends on whether you get an old batch of the AAA-F, or a newer batch. Googling will help you with this. (These are all water-based paints.) The older AAA-F (which is cooler in colour) needs to be mixed with 4 parts of a warm matt shade called Bermuda Beige, and the newer batch of AAA-F should be mixed with slate greys. First recipe is called Black Widow and the second style is called Black Widow Ultra. There are code numbers for these matt colours online. Most paint shops do mixing these days so just take the code along to the shop. I intend to buy some AAA-F first, then the code on the bottle will tell me if it's an old or new batch (I'll check the numbers online) and then I'll know what shade matt to buy to mix in. I've read that the results give you a cheap screen that looks as good as a $3000 one, so I'm really going to try this myself.

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  8 лет назад

      +juan castillo Its basically a 4:1 mix of the flat white:aluminium base. The Dulux website says that 1L of its paint cover 16 square metres...so going off that, 1L should be plenty if you are only painting the screen and not the entire wall.
      Don't forget to do multiple coats though... at least two or three!

    Where did you get this for $2,500? I have been looking around and can only find it for $2,950 as the cheapest.

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  9 лет назад

      It was from a local specialist Hifi store in Perth....I rung around to get the best price.
      I don't know whether true or not, but some stores mentioned the Sony was actually going UP in price shortly....not sure whether they were bluffing or not to get the quick sale though.

    • @jess8420
      @jess8420 9 лет назад

      Brad Harvey Thanks for the update. That is a great price. I have called around a few and the cheapest I can find is $2900 on ebay....
      Are you happy with the HW40ES now that you have played with it some more? Do you send in 720p, 1080p quality and do you notice the difference much? Tried something like netflix? Sorry for all the questions, just curious.

    • @bradh81
      @bradh81  9 лет назад

      Savitar 1 Yep, still very happy with the purchase. Generally I'm sending in 720p or above, and its very watchable at 720p, although of course the 1080p material simply looks stunning :). Some of the TV broadcasts at 480p and 576p look very ordinary though... and you can tell that even though the footy is broadcast at supposedly 1080p, its definitely not the same clarity or sharpness as a 1080p video.
      Due to lack of wireless coverage in the room, I haven't tried my Chromecast/Netflix combo yet sorry. But given that Netflix is 720p (with HD subscription), then it should look really good.
      An interesting thing to note is that whilst the Motion Compensation of the projector works fantastically most of the time, if you have a badly encoded video, it can actually make the video motion actually a lot WORSE than if the MC was turned off. Something to remember :)

    • @jess8420
      @jess8420 9 лет назад +1

      Brad Harvey Thanks Brad. Sounds like you are very happy with it. I figured 720p would be the minimum quality level which is fine with me. Netflix looks great on my LCD at 720p (for streaming) so interested to try that... Much appreciated for the response....
