My first impressions with the new Ruger American Ranch Gen 2. I avoided the first gen rifle due to a poor action and cheap feeling stock. This is a game changer.
I want ALL of the calibers. Want vs need I guess. I hope your .556 shoots great for ya. Great choice for bolt practice imo. Thank you for the vid. Please make more.
Really like this rifle for the price point. The gun metal cerekote is a great touch. Like the raised comb. Ruger should have left the "non" ranch model with the 22"barrel rather than cutting down to 20". Some really cool calibers coming out this year too on the gen 2! So tired of really nice rifles being put on the market today in 6.5 cm & .308 only.
Yes, I love the new offering of calibers. My hope is they start to do varriations of the ruger american with different barrel lengths in coming years. Tikka has done things like this in the past.
I haven't even touched one of these new Gen 2's yet. That being said, we all have seen many reviews on them by this point. My feeling is simple. This is a lot of rifle for as low as $520. (Lowest I've seen) Ruger sold a zillion of the Gen 1's and I'm sure history will repeat itself. Good video!
Thank you! I believe they removed a lot of excuses to buying one now and are going to do very well with them. I'll be posting a video this weekend about mounting my scope on the 300 AAC and might even make it to the range for some more feedback.
i have gen 1 same caliber. i have replaced the stock and now the rifle has magpul stock. with PA bdc reticle scope my 15 old boy hits targets at 500-600 yards… very accurate rifles.
My old Ruger American in 308 is a dadgum tack driver that has a 22 inch barrel. I wouldn't trade it for a brand spanking newer one because of the light weight and dependability. Every deer and varmint got laid out when they got a dose of my 150 grain Sierra pro Hunter bullets that I have handloaded for anything agoing here in Texas, and I ain't kidding either.
I had a Ruger American 22-250 that did the same,,Bolt come open while walking, Also very poor action half the time wouldn't lift the shell high enough to chamber,,I traded it on a Savage 110m 22-250 happy now,
I can’t speak specifically for the gen 2 but my gen 1 300blk only has the last round bolt hold open because of the pmags. The back end of the follower has more of a 90 degree to it. Try lancer mags, their back end of the follower is more sloped allowing the bolt to push down the follower just enough to not be locked open
@@justbros123 yeah not really a problem but there is a solution for whoever it bothers. I have 3 lancer and 1 magpul 300blk specific mags so I’m just gonna keep the lancers for the ruger and magpul for my ar upper that will arrive in the next few days
You should try an ARKEN scope EPL4 FFP 6-24x50 Mil with your choice of recitals VHR or VPR $377.49 with the discount. It has a zero stop and great turrets and I think the glass is Better than the Vortex.

I just intentionally bought a Gen 1 American in 7mm-08. I love my Gen 1 .270 & 300 BLK. No issues with any of them. I do like (some) of the Gen 2's upgrades, having had a chance to check out a .308, but, the $200+ increase in price compared to some models of the Gen-1's is not worth it to me, fancy twisted barrel & all that. I will most likely get a Gen 2 .270 once they hit the gunshops and once supply is established & prices go south of MSRP, which was the entire point of the concept, cheap, effective, & nothing too fancy. These Gen 2's sort of missed that point.
I see what you are saying. Time will tell if this is a success for Ruger or not. I'm anticipating a lot of people will find this an attractive price point that is still below the Tikka, Bergara price range.
@@M447DT length of the barrel has nothing to do with accuracy. I shoot a short barrel 5.56 nato that is only 10.5 inches long and does 3/4 in shot groups at 100 yds, but the velocity is low due to barrel length.
Call me weird, but I prefer the plain-jane looks of the Gen 1 Rifles. After I recently saw the photos of the Gen 2's, I went out and bought two of the Gen 1's, and I'll be buying a third shortly.
@@justbros123 I’ve only tried it with hornady ammo. It’s all good if you push the bolt forwards quickly but if you try to stay on target and do a slow bolt push then it doesn’t want to go into its final position. It’s all good though i kinda have a bolt action mp5 which is cool I guess lmao.
It is a bummer the price is climbing, but what isn't? It is still impressive what you get for the money. I bet we see almost every gun offering this year bump up 15-20% in cost this year, so relative to every other option it is still a good bang for your buck in my opinion! I think the new features are worth every bit of $150.
I had a ranch in 300 BLK It would misfire a lot around 6 to 8 times out of 20 sent it back to Ruger. Got it back with a note saying that 300 BLK is designed for the AR and the primers are to hard for it to be reliable. I called them and said I own a ranch 556 and it has 5800 rounds threw it with no misfires is the 556 designed for the AR to. They basically said live with it. I sold it to a friend and he took it to his local gunsmith and had the head space adjusted it works fine now. I bought a savage 300 BLK no more misfires.
Longer barrels definitely have their place, but we're big fans of the shorter barrels for running with a suppressor. Their "Standard" Ruger American Gen2 has a 20" barrel over the 16" that the "Ranch" has, if length is what you're after.
Jesus, why? There's no velocity benefit with the cartridges it's chambered in due to faster burning powders. They're inherently less accurate due to less-stiff, whippier barrels. And who wants to lug around a magnum-length gun chambered for a non-magnum (considerably, in some cases) cartridges anyway? This is no .338 Win Mag. It's a ranch rifle, chambered in intermediate cartridges. All a knowledgeable shooter needs is a barrel length that maximizes the cartridge it's chambered in, which in this case is around the 16" legal minimum. .223, 300 BLK, 350 Legend, etc.
El 223 por mi experiencia es un muy buen calibre. Acá con mi amigo dueño del rifle le damos tranquilo a los ciervos a 500 o 600 metros y caen sin problemas😎
There certainly are lots of variables that play into performance. This rifle for me is going to be all about removing excuses to shoot because of ammo costing me 1/5 compared to my hunting cartridges. I’m going to enjoy the nimble rifle with my 5” suppressor
Seems like a lot of guys have problems with their bolt opening while hunting. My son and I both have gen 1 Americans in 308 and have never had the bolt open while walking through the woods hunting. I guess it’s possible but never happens to us.
Mostly the same 10 guys complaining. It is not a common occurrence as some would indicate. It happens. Mostly to people that are more lax with the rifle carry.
@@taylorcleblanc I can see it happening if you have the rifle slung on your back and a branch catches the bolt and opens it, but when I’m hunting I carry the rifle in my right hand holding it basically under the magazine. I never have any issues with branches grabbing and opening the bolt.

I will NEVER buy another rifle were the safety does not LOCK the action. I have been walking on the flat, on two track, and had the bolt come open and lost a round. While still hunting I have looked down and had the action open, round gone missing , and have the receiver full of trash. I have a gen 1 and have had no problem with the smoothness of action.
