his character hasnt changed much, mostly just the plot surrounding him
in the earlier seasons, he was always the spider at the centre of every web, but now he's mostly just the 'guy who could stop every villain before they even become a threat but doesn't because I dont know why' and lets them all in on the condition that they 'not hurt belle' which none of them ever end up following
also the belle thing keeps repeating itself and he keeps 'reverting' to evil
That's kind of what I mean. His character development was flushed down the toilet and he became less funny/sarcastic because everything is drama drama evil evil now

Apparently I posted a comment on this video 7 years ago. Wow. Watching it again makes me miss the show, and Rumple, too. Unfortunately I thought his character started to get a bit stale after season 3. Season 1 Rumple was the best imo, when he still had so much mystery surrounding him and you weren't quite sure of his angle.
Completely agree. The writer’s started to loose creativity with the new villains so they always had to recycle him and ruin any of him progress when it came to him changing. Got really tiring after season 4 and the whole dagger business.

Omg, I realize it's been 9 years since I watched your video and still love it (and of course Robert Carlyle is still my favorite actor and Rumple will always be my favorite character on this show !!! I love him !!!! even I think they ruined his character ... he doesn't really evolve except in season 1,2 and 3 but after that ... I think its always the same thing, he is vilain and good and vilain again etc ... But don't get me wrong I love him anyway haha It's Rumple after all :) )

SEASON 6 RANT
Watching this was like waking up from a bad nightmare... namely, the show in its present state. If there's season 6 haters, please comment below, because I need to share this pain. There's a dumb Evil Queen clone prancing around every episode now, constantly yattering on about how everybody ruined her life.
She hangs out with Zelena, who is still there... for some reason. And they go to spas together. It's like a weird fantasy soap, where instead of talking about town parties and neighbours, they chat endlessly about either magical McGuffins or season 1.
Oh yeah, season 1. I know it sounds weird, but it's like this show has a fetish for its own first season now. All creativity is abandoned in the neverending quest to just remake season 1. But of course, without context, it all looks completely ridiculous.
Even the newly introduced story elements are complete arse. WTF is the Land Of Untold Stories? What kind of logical sense does that world even make? And if you tell me it's a fairy tale, screw that, because logic used to be a thing on this show.
Mr. Gold is STILL chasing after his wife(for 2.5 seasons now) and even he doesn't seem to understand why anymore. Despite being like an uber Dark One now, he's still a bitter deadbeat running a meaningless shop. Nobody seems to give two shits about him anymore, so why he doesn't just burn the place down and go to the Land Of Untold Stories with his baby, I have no idea.
And of course, it always ends with Regina and/or Emma spouting some boring lesson of the day that they've probably learned three times already.
Okay, there are still two cool things about this season: Jekyll and Hyde were actually pretty good(apart from Hyde having no motivation for anything he did prior to "Strange Case") and Colin O'Donoghue still livens up the episodes whenever he turns up. Hook isn't even that great of a character(at least not as Emma's devoted boyfriend), but he's the only one who comes across as a remotely real person.
But overall, this show is dead. I was actually excited for season 6, hoping that the return to the old season-long arc format would liven it, but ironically, it turns out that those same split arcs were the only things still holding the show together. Now it's not just a mess, but a BORING mess of storylines that just come and go whenever. It feels like every episode is a filler now, and none of the characters are remotely connected in any kind of arc whatsoever.
I agree that watching this video is like taking a breath of fresh air XD I've watched it many times already just to relive season 1 Rumple's awesomeness.
I thought season 6 has been pretty slow overall thus far :( I liked the mid-season finale well enough despite a few grievances and I'm looking forward to March when it comes back, but the show definitely doesn't have the magic it presented in the first three seasons. There are occasional moments, but overall I think the writing just isn't as interesting and memorable. The Evil Queen was generally underwhelming, while Rumple, sadly, hasn't really had a solid motive for his actions since the end of his main storyline with his supposed "death."
I liked the Jekyll and Hyde arc, although in my opinion it was far too short. Ultimately I think that mini arc just ended up being a plot device to establish that the Evil Queen could only be killed if Regina was killed as well. Regina herself isn't as awesome without the edginess of the Evil Queen inside her, and Zelena was drastically under-utilized. And although I understand the changes they've put Emma through, I'll admit I miss her badass attitude. As you can probably tell I'm still holding onto hope. I've been with this show since the first episode and I'm not ready to give up :(
The mid-season finale was kind of amusing, but only because it was another AU storyline(they're not even saving them for the actual season finales anymore lol), just like the upcoming musical episode will be. But yeah, OUAT doesn't really have an actual point anymore. I thought the split arcs going away would mean they'd get their groove back, but it only got worse instead because now there's no focus whatsoever. People and plots just sort of come and go at random.
Personally, I wouldn't say it's random. There are some plot lines this season that I like. Although, I will say I thought the "all saviors have to die" thing was ridiculous. Not to mention Jasmine and Aladdin have been pretty boring so far in my opinion. I'm glad to hear that they'll be bringing back some old characters in the second half, and I hope they do them at least some justice. One of my personal critiques with the show is that it introduces all these really interesting characters and then just kind of drops them.
When they switched to doing two arcs every season in season 3, characters that actually seemed important up until that point suddenly weren't anymore. Like Jiminy, Red, Grumpy, etc... Don't get me wrong, I actually adored season 3. I thought Pan and Zelena were great villains and there was a lot of great character development in the main cast in my opinion. And we did eventually see Red get her happy ending in season 5, I believe. But still, a lot of these characters all but disappeared for at least a season - sometimes more, and that was unfortunate to me. I understand if they wanted to move on to new stuff but sometimes I felt like doing that didn't work to their advantage. My least favorite season is actually season 5, mainly because I felt there was so much wasted potential. I liked the concept of Emma being a Dark One, and I liked the concept of the Underworld. But in the end, they both fell short. I think if I had to be honest, my biggest problem with season 6 is just that. Wasted potential. I don't like the way Evil Regina was portrayed, Zelena has done nothing productive (I get that she's a mother now, but still...) Rumple basically sat around all season also not being productive other than making out with the Evil Queen occasionally, not much interest in Aladdin or Jasmine... and like I said in my last post, I didn't like how abruptly the Hyde and Jekyll arc ended.
Sigh... anyway, that turned into a bigger rant than I meant for it to be, lol. I've been trying not to be negative about it because, in a way, slamming the show also feels like betraying it after I've been with it for so long. And of course, no disrespect to anyone who is happy with the show as it is, obviously! But of course, I still need to be honest. I've been feeling disappointed.
