    Buying old laptops and breathing new life into them is always appreciated, better than getting the usual recent ones that are prone to underperform in some aspects and don't offer so much upgradability. Hopefully more people get to see content from you, your videos have been swell so far.

    I did something very much like this last fall, with an HP 4540s rather than a 4430s. I pulled out the dual-core CPU and installed an i7-3720qm and also used MX4 compound. Also installed an SSD, upped the RAM to 16 gigs like you did, put a terabyte HDD in the optical bay, and upgraded the LCD from the stock 768p to a compatible 900p that I had lying around (this required the cable from the 17" version of these). The original Wifi/BT card works well enough (Atheros AR9485) so I left it be.
    The $10 bay adapters from eBay and AliExpress all work fine with these if anyone wants to replace the optical drive with more storage. You do have to disable a small bit of the 16 gigs in the 4540 due to some glitch in the BIOS, but the 4430 may not have that issue. There's a Windows registry hack for that and also a way to do it in GRUB if you're using Linux, which I do.
    This laptop is about a decade old now but had been barely used by whoever had it before me, and now it works great with the updated components.

      OP's laptop with the Sandy Bridge quad and 16 gigs will kill it on any Linux distro.
      I use PCLinuxOS on a very similar upgraded HP laptop (4540s) to his. My wife still runs a Core 2 Duo laptop and we use Mint on that.

    Would (have) be(en) interesting to see a comparison between Windows and Linux (maybe additionally also between old and upgraded HW).
    I know there are not so many benchmarks that you can use on both systems, but what comes directly to my mind is geekbench.

    Would have been better to use a M.2 card with Bluetooth and WiFi 6; better antennas than a dongle.

    • @TechDecoder11
      @TechDecoder11  6 месяцев назад +2

      It does not have an m.2 slot. Also, a new wifi card can not be used as this hp laptop has a whitelist, only allowing certain cards.

      Just a mSATA slot then? It would have been good to mention that, as having both seems kind of clunky. I hate having dongles on my laptops.

      Nice work. But dual channel don't have much impact to performance for home PC usage, is useful for ram intensive application such gaming or cinebench. Bluetooth and wifi upgrade don't have much impact on real life, if you don't transfer large files. Wifi is useful if have wifi type g, generally to slow of internet connection.
      Other useful upgrade is thermal paste, if laptop have original thermal paste, it will be dry. I like make to new life old and usable PC, and you have make good job 👍

      No, I am not saying that I bought it like this, I had a Lite-on 512gb ssd whose casing was damaged. So, I replaced it with the casing of older 128gb one, which I had lying in my drawer.

Also I have had no luck online buying the E CPU' there are the same codes but with the code ending in M and not E? What do you suggest? Many thanks in advance for your advice. John

    The laptop will only last until end of 2025 with windows 10 EOL. I mean it will technically last longer, but for update purposes. You can install windows 11 on it, as I did it to my Dell Precision T5500, and then my hard drive failed as it was an old 1TB western digital blue from 2015. I am going to put an SSD in it :)

    • @johncate9541

      True, but if you don't need Windows and do what he did, it will absolutely fly with Linux. That's not for everyone, but if you're a Linux user, this is a killer machine. I upgraded an HP 4540 much like this one.
