EastIdahoNews.com and Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Idaho Falls and Pocatello are partnering to honor people in our community for Feel Good Friday. Every week, we surprise someone deserving of special recognition.
We received an email a few months ago about a local business owner who saved a woman from losing $8,000 to a scammer. The message said:
I just wanted to let you know about an amazing, honest individual that saved my mom from financial disaster. She was on the verge of being scammed by a phone solicitor who kept her hostage on her phone for 6 hours, then tried to extort $8,000 in cash to be sent to him next-day air because she had thought she’d won a prize. It then turned into a situation where she owed him the money and she needed to pay it back.
In her panic, she went to the bank, withdrew $8,000 and then went to Ship Pro in Ammon. She needed to send it next-day air with tracking when the owner, Dane Croft, very kindly helped her and asked her a few questions after he could see that something was visibly wrong. He gently calmed her down, told her that she was being scammed, said she was being asked to do was not real and someone was trying to extort money from her. The person who had her on the phone was actively listening to the conversation the entire time and quickly hung up after hearing Dane talk to my mother.
The same individual called back after hanging up. Dane then asked to answer her phone and told him that he had reported the address to the authorities and flagged the account with fraudulent activities to FedEx.
Had it not been for his integrity, honesty, and just being a good person, my mother would have been financially devastated. I just feel that people need to be reminded of scammers and that there are some amazing people in our community! Thanks to Dane Croft, owner of Ship Pro - he saved our mom and our family from so many problems. He’s our hero!
We wanted to honor Dane for his actions and surprised him at work for Feel Good Friday. Watch the video above to see his reaction!

And on top of it, it was supposed to have happened when I was very ill. And I thought, who knows, I may have. I was just sobbing. But at least I told her I wouldn't pay until I see it on paper. And you need to send it to me. I did not give my address, figured if it's real I'll get something, never did. Luckily I also told my brother and sister about it, and they said it was a scam.

my friend works as a teller at a major bank and he said its horrible when you see first hand how many people get caught up in this everyday. its even worse because he can see their account balances and how much some people need the money their loosing. he always tries to convince people their being scammed. he says working in a bank for three years it becomes pretty easy to tell. some people hes able to convince but alot he cant. he says it also sucks because at the end of the day hes not allowed to deny someone something thats legally theirs so alot of times he cant do anything. ive been on the phone with a scammer before i knew it was a scammer but i wanted to hear what the scam was so i could tell my bank ect... basically what the scam was they would claim your name was being used to send western union but you could help them catch the guy because of course hes a criminal their investigating. they tell you they cant legally ask you to use your money so they will deposit the money. what they end up doing is running a cash advance on your credit card and by the time you notice the moneys already gone. but coming from that they can be very aggresive and convincing and if you dont know your shit or not mentally there its easy to fall for. guy told he was CIA and they had a warrant for my computer. i lived five mons away from a local cia field office. told him i would call him back. called him back told him i was in the parking lot of the field office with my cpu and they were more then welcome to come out and look since i have nothing to hide

Banks need to train their tellers to question older people who are trying to get money immediately. This could have been stopped in several places. However, I am thankful that Dane figured out what was going on and stopped it. Blessings to all.

I recently had a scam call that was left on my answering system. It said that a family member was in jail, and to call a number. (Now, I DO have a couple of family members that are questionable)
I called the number, and asked what 'jail' did the call come from? He asked for my phone number??? That NEVER happens, so I asked him again, which jail?
He said it was a 'call center' that handles ALL of the jail calls in the state. That NEVER happens. He continued asking for my phone number. After going back and forth for a minute, I said, oh, heck no...he hung up on me.
Scammers are needing phone numbers for some reason, I have heard of this scam, but I can't understand WHY they would need my phone number.
Unless there would have been additional personal questions they would have asked, after he got my phone number, had he not hung up on me.
I have a landline in addition to my cell phone, he called on my landline, so, I don't know if that made a difference or not.

They got my mother and almost got my step-father. People in their 80s and 90s are trusting and somewhat gullible. Their times were different. The bank tellers, grocery stores who sell Western Union, and now these private mail folks are wised up and looking out for the mostly elderly. Blessings on them.

Perfect example of why seniors need to have a younger adult who acts as a caregiver for them. The caregiver doesn't necessarily need to live with them, but be a quick text/call away from advising the senior against falling for scams like these. And it can be done by telling them to follow one simple rule: If you are approached by anyone in any way (In person, by phone, email, etc) and solicited for money, you need to contact the caregiver immediately. No exceptions! The problem, of course, is that the caregiver is often too overwhelmed at the moment or embarrassed to admit their situation even to a loved one -- so would rather pay money to just make the problem go away! I live with my elderly Dad and have stopped him from being ripped off more times than I can count!

Beware of scams that come at you through the mail, as well. I've received 2 over the years. One I took to my bank - in person - and asked them if they thought it was a scam. It was. The other one I actually took to my local police station and asked them to look at the check/letter I received. They immediately told me it was a scam and it saved me thousands of $$. So encouraging to hear there are good people out there on the lookout like this.

Very nice and truly good man! People never cease to amaze me! I am 73 years old which is considered "elderly". I can sniff a scammer out in a heartbeat. WHAT is wrong with people that they have to be "saved" from something like this??? SIX hours on the phone??? They don't know the IRS NEVER phones anyone, yet have access to plenty of money, know exactly h0w to access it & how to give away. And the family is so grateful. Sorry, makes no sense whatsoever.

Good man! My mom was scammed by magazine sellers over the phone to the tune of $400 a month for all kinds of magazines including Vibe and skateboard mags which my then 82 year old mother did not read. When I she was ill with cancer I discovered this and put an end to the payments. I told them over the phone, the party is OVER.

He is so adorable! God Bless him! I received horse shit calls that amazon said my account was hacked into. Well number 1 I don't have a Amazon account. I also received a call from a guy saying he was Attorney "Mike Anderson" with a heavy accent. He said his officer was standing next to him and if I don't pay a loan I will be going to jail. My son heard the call as I had the scammer on speaker and said hang up on that fker it's a scam. It's sad people have fallen for their BS scams. I have a friend who talks crap to them and they give up. 😆

I once had a guy call me saying something about how I owed credit card money or something and was literally screaming at me on the phone, saying "what you're doing is illegal, I'm going to call the police right now". I just hung up on him. I checked with my credit card online and found nothing unusual.
