I tried this and it did not work. I waited 24 hours for the black to dry and it still spread when I applied the top coat of paint. Not sure what I did wrong. I wonder if putting a layer of liquid clear to dry over the black base would help to avoid this problem...

an artist friend told me about something called gesso. I've used it to prime a canvas that i'm reusing and it works well.
