Today I'm showing you, start to finish, how to build backing tracks in Ableton Live. By the end of this lesson you'll be able to build a click track, count off track, backing track, change the tempo of your backing tracks, and know how to place markers in Ableton Live.

Tim, great update to your Ableton, I did not see the blank space file in the download.
Yeah. You are 100% right. I'll fix that now! Feel free to hit me via my website and I'll send that to you. Or, you can create one yourself but dragging in an audio clip into Ableton, bring up the clip view and drag down the volume of that clip down to nothing, and then highlight the clip and hit "Command + J" to join or print that and now the audio you had will be gone and you can use that.
@@TimBuell Nice. these instructions helped a bunch. Live would not load the Blank Space m4a
Now I can press on learning this technique and apply it to a project song.
thanks large for this Share Tim Boom!
@@roygmrobinson7285 I should've mentioned you can make any file a "blank space" file in ableton by just dragging the volume of the clip all the way to zero in the loop browser and then "consolidating" that clip by hitting Command + J
That Blank space thing is the best piece of advice I've seen for Ableton. I'll be using it from now on. Thanks.
So glad it helped!
that blank track is a life saver!!! I used to use the tempo changes in the master until now 🤯🤯
Glad to hear it helped!
great work man!
Thanks so much Dany!
Have a shot everytime he says dragon!?
This video was fire.
very helpful, do u play the whole show in the arrangement view? or swap to live when there are more songs?
I like this. What if you never change the tempo of the song? Would you still use the blank space file?
Hi Tim, very nice video! I want to ask you: what output level do you set for export this Backing tracks? for example, to use them on a Roland SPD SX...
Great question! What I would do is aim to get your mixes where they are peaking at around -1.5 dB. I make sure to add a limiter on the master buss to bring up the loudness and you can check your loudness with the free plugin "YouLean Loudness Meter"
This is great , thanks for sharing this. I have a maschine MK3, can I use it instead of Ableton ?
Hey! Thanks for the kind words. I'm not familiar with the maschine mk3 - so I'm not sure! But Ableton is the best solution I've found for backing tracks.
Using the leader track for tempo is great, I'm absolutely going to start doing that! The click and cues seem more tedious than they need to be, though. Is there a reason you haven't dropped those samples into a drum rack and use a few stored MIDI clips to create the clicks? It avoids the warping and degrading issue that you mentioned, it's just using a different method to apply the samples with, what I'd think, is the same result?
That’s a great point! I avoid as much MIDI as possible for live stuff as it taxes CPU more than audio will. But I’m also old school and don’t mind editing audio haha. Typically I create those count off/alerts much quicker than in the video here as well haha.
@@TimBuell I guess I've never been running on a system where I was that conscious of or worried about CPU load, but that totally makes sense.
@@littledrummerboyph It is likely "fine" in most cases. But in live situations I'm always trying to keep things as fail-proof and iron clad as possible as anything can go wrong! haha
Hi! I didn't understand how you created the click track. That part when you joined them all, is there any time space between sounds or you removed all with any Ableton command? Right at 5:05 "Here is the Measure" talk
You don’t have to have anything connecting the samples - just “command + J” to join anything in the highlighted region.
❤
Is 'leader' blank work if you have a lot of tempo variation in the same track ?
That gets a bit tougher. I would probably use the tempo automation line to do that. BUT it can be done from a leader track
how do you separate the click track from the backing track? I'm following this video but I can hear the click on both left & right earphone when I export it. I'm planning to use my phone for live gig because I cannot carry my pc🤣
This is great, but as an Ableton know-nothing, I've no idea what just happened! Any chance of a VERY basic version in which you explain the commands, how they work, etc.? Thanks.
I might just do that Ray! Ableton can definitely be a confusing program to get the hang of at first.
Whats your live output set up?
I really like the iConnectivity stuff.
Take your click track sounds, drop them in a drum rack, Save the rack. Now you'll never have to warp it, just drop MIDI notes in the track and you have the perfect click, no matter the BPM.
Yep. I hear you. I have a TON of friends that do that. I just get a bit overly cautious with adding MIDI to any project because it has a higher rate of things getting weird and CPU usage than audio. Something feels more "concrete" about audio to me than relying on MIDI. BUT - like you said, this is an option and people totally do it.
there is no blank space in the download
That’s my bad - send me an email (contact page on my site) and I’ll get it over to you

I see why you are avoiding tempo mapping, but for songs that have variable tempo, it is unavoidable, if you want Ableton to process and display those tempo changes.
Interesting! Let’s be friends?
