I was a solo act and made my own tracks for a cover act. Didnt have digital then. 1st used cassettes, then minidisk and DAT TAPES. I usually just used the input in the mixer and mixed from the stage.
Scott, love your stuff. I also love and use Stage Traxx but now I'm adding in Multitracker and, thanks to a very cool way to trigger Multitracker via Stage Traxx, I'm getting the best of both. The unlimited tracking of Multitracker and the lyrics and playlist set up of Stage Traxx. I'm still overhauling my show to accomplish this (daunting but in the end, I think, worth it) but so far I like the combo of the two. Keep up the great vids, I expand, or at least refresh, my knowledge with each one.
Scott, your videos and presentations are always top notch. Thank you very much for providing such a detailed dive into the various topics you cover. The info is invaluable.
Thank you :) I appreciate that! I’m glad to hear that, because I did 11 shows in 10 days in a row this last week…. So I was worried this one wasn’t going to be up to par 😅 So I appreciate it especially on this video!
Great video, Scott! 19:01 I can talk with some experience regarding the small amount of bleed/crosstalk some mentioned between audio and click channels. This was especially common with the Roland SPD-S, which many drummers used (prior to newer versions) to run their backing tracks. By default, when samples were recorded into to the SPD-S, an 'ambience' effect was automatically applied. This could be turned off in the menu setting, but it was ON by default and it stumped a LOT of people. As you can guess, the 'ambience' was achieved by bleeding a little left into the right channel and vice versa. A nice effect to be sure, but an absolute nightmare when your aim was for a clean separation of channels. Hope this helps!
I use a Ketron module, it can play 6 channel wav files, tracks 1 and 2 are grouped to stereo, tracks 3 to 6 are mono, 6 can be routed to aux out, so been used as click/ cue. You can adjust volume for 5 parts.
I've been scouring the internet for the best single file click track setup option, this was by far and away the easiest and most budget conscious setup, and explained the best as well. Thanks a ton.
Very cool! Well explained. One of the reasons I love my X32 so much is that it IS an interface as well as the FOH desk. I can set it up to receive any number of channels from the card (computer) and mix them in as regular channels like they were live. With 16 xlr outs I can keep IEM's stereo if desired. And for anyone knocking the X32 for it's pre's, just use the DL32 and your using the Midas pre's that are in it. For the money, you can't beat that setup. Cheers
You do a really great job of presenting this information. The Pros and Cons info alone is very helpful. My wife and I have a duo and we use backing tracks on some of our tunes - mainly for private gigs when some party tunes are called for. I've always used the single-track method - click on the left and audio on the right. We mix from the stage. Whenever we've done larger shows involving a sound company, I hand the guy two lines. Sorry, but many sound people are not good and can hurt you. Giving them two lines is darn near foolproof. Here's the MAIN reason I do a single track: Our gig requires a lot of concentration. I'm singing, playing, calling songs on the fly, dealing with the wedding coordinator, talking to the father of the bride, making sure the timeline is followed and much more. There's no way I could deal with mixing multiple tracks and lastly, I'm 100% convinced the audience could not tell the difference. Most of the rooms we play in were never designed to have live music - hotels, country clubs, vineyards, etc. I want it to sound as good as possible but I would never have the time to invest the time into doing multitrack mixes for our tracks - there's no space in my life for dealing with all of that. I mix our tracks in Protools and with new backing tracks I may have to go back and do another mix or two to get balances right, but that's a quick process. CROSS TALK - I've found that whenever I had a cross-talk issue, it was usually something like the click going through an Aux track - like for reverb. I use minimal effects now for our tracks for that reason and also because with these funky rooms we play in sometimes, the last thing you need is reverb in a room with a bad echo or slapback. I can add a touch of reverb from the board in a dry room but I can't take reverb off if it's on the track. Anyway, great info Scott and thanks for investing the time to explain it all clearly. Much appreciated.
Thanks for all your help and always answering questions, you've really demystified a lot of this stuff and got me up and running quickly. Much appreciated! Cheers
Have to say Scott these tutorials have been a mind of information. They have helped me a lot prepare my own backing tracks to play along with. Thank you
@@ScottUhlMusic Hey Scott, I have used your method for doing my backing tracks on Stage Traxx. I still need to get my own method. One question I have though Is as I don't have a monitor speaker and Using the IEM . I can't hear myself at all now. Unless I have set this up wrong. Any advice would be great or if you have done a video about this. If you could point me in the right direction that would be great. Tanks Chris
Hi Scott! I love your videos, especially your ability to communicate clearly and simply. I am in the middle of switching from using Loop Community to Stage Traxx, and your videos have been invaluable! I am using tracks for classic and 90s rock covers with full band and duo, and a Linkin Park tribute called Hybrid Theory in north Texas. I started out using MainStage which was great but as I play guitar, keys, and run tracks I needed to simplify. Im loving Stage Traxx so far. Thanks again!
Thanx againScott for not spending the most important part of the video (The beggining) obsessing about the algorythm, liking, pressing the bell icon and commenting before you have even had a glimpse of the content. I learned a few things within those precious moment others waste banging on about their sponsers. Thank you, I fully recomend your channel and look forward to learning more here..
Great video! the hybrid method is the best and easier regarding control and less cables...I use Prime with separated stems but use the Y cable (click/tracks) going out of the iPad...
Great video, Scott. I came away learning more than anticipated. We run tracks using the single file method from an iPad using Sound Cue, and also keep a backup iPad using Stage Traxx3. Started with WAV files and eventually settled on using the higher resolution MP3 format. Both the drummer and myself (bassist) get the click so that if the drummer misses the count-in, I can cue the band on the count. The other band mates aren't cool with hearing the click track in their in-ears.
Nice! And yeah, singers in particular struggle with click in ears at first. But all the singers I play with now are used to it. I love playing to click live personally
I could not find it some years after I downloaded it. For my back-up iPad I went with Stage Traxx3. It has some interesting features over SoundCue. Sound Cue IMO presents itself in a more straight forward manner and is simple to use. Otherwise Stage Traxx3 will get the job done.
a lot of times, when bleed from click/cues makes it into the backing tracks (with the single file method), it's because we either didn't pan the respective tracks 100% to both sides, OR we accidentally left some reverb or something on the master channel when creating the backing tracks... not sure if this may be what some people are experiencing with this issue, but we specifically had some bleed from the click because we left a reverb on the master when setting up tracks on a few songs.
HEY SCOTT,,, correction !! @6:20 refering to your stereo input point ,, they would both actually go to your left output , TIP is universally connected to "LEFT" . . . . unless you are wearing your headphones backwards then yes you are correct, one would hear the click on the right EAR and the backing track on the left.....unless you wired up your PA system backwards then we would be back from were we started this comment. HAHAHA , just messing with ya! Cheers from a LOW Voltage sound installer in Los Angeles CA!
Hey Scott! Your videos have really helped propel me and my live music gear and techniques. Thanks for all your videos! I wanted to share How I currently run backing tracks. I use an iPad and Stage Traxx, connect iPad up to my XR18 via USB and route audio to each of the channels using USB input on the channels instead of the XLR inputs. I also pass through my StageTraxx midi commands through the USB input to the MIDI out of the mixer into my Kemper. A small con of XR18 midi pass through is it disable midi support for the XR18 but pros outweigh cons for me currently! TLDR; My Channels 5-8 are my bass, synth, backing vox and eDrums being fed directly from iPad to mixer USB input.
Incredible walk-through for someone ready to take this step. You are patient and thorough. Seems like you also have videos for those who aren't yet ready to absorb all the jargon just yet but this hit perfectly at the right place and time for me. For other lurkers: I'm the kind of lurker who doesn't go out of the way (sorry not sorry) to comment unless I feel 1) I should warn others for the sake of humanity to avoid a bad experience or 2) guilty to have accessed new knowledge which clearly I didn't deserve. This video is the latter. I subscribed and liked so hopefully those two actions contribute to advertisers footing the bill for this guy. 10/10. Will watch again.🙌
Great video, Scott. I'm in the throes of setting up a live rig - I play piano and guitar (one at a time!) to minus-one tracks and have never done this before. As a guy in his 60s, I'm finding the sheer choice of gear overwhelming, as I've always just used complete backing tracks run straight from the Macbook to the PA alongside the vocal mic, karaoke fashion. I found the video accessible and easy to understand, so have liked and subscribed. It's early days in getting performance-ready as you have steered me back to the track set up in regard to a solution for not having the click track go FOH - great tip there! I'll be looking at your other vids now. Great job - thanks again.
You don’t need the DI box. But if you are sending the signal to FOH or longer cable runs, direct boxes are almost usually the way to go 👍 I need to do a video on “do you need a direct box” because I get that question often
Excellent as usual, Scott! My tried-and-true way is doing the single-file solution, but I always like to get your take on this stuff, just to see if there's anything I'm not thinking of.
Howdy. Doing a 2-set solo gig the end of this month ---just my vox and an AG doing covers, but for the fist time, I'm thinking about using backing tracks for 4 original songs, 2 per set, and running them off a mobile devise, probably my mini-laptop, where I have my DAW, Studio One PRO. I already created the backing tracks as they have a module for that. AND I will run it through my Mackie profx10 v3 mixer. Now just have to figure out how to wire the laptop into the mixer board. I guess maybe I should read the Mackie manual !

Oh my god, your whole channel is so much help for a down to earth band, I really can’t emphasise that! Thank you! I watched a lot of your earlier videos and most of the affiliate links doesn’t work now, I wish you could change them for living links for you to get what you earned.
Thanks! Do you know which links aren’t working? Thats unfortunate that some of them hadn’t, as this video isn’t that old… thanks for the heads up! And even if you use the links to GET to the website, if you still buy something after using my links to get to the website, I’ll still get credit :)

Oh, no, I was talking about other links in your older videos - I am binge watching all of them. But that is nice and reassuring if it works even when you use the link to get there! I surely will use them when the time comes :) Thanks a lot for your channel again!

Can you suggest maybe a channel or a video where I can get to know the cheapest things I would need to start a youtube channel and how to do editing and things like that? I am considering that I would start a channel and start to show everything that I am buying, how I am starting to set them up for my new metal band. I am a guitar player songwriter by the way. I couldn’t find hungarian videos about the things I will buy and I think it would be help for someone to show the start of my journey in hungarian.
I'm using a hybrid method - multitrack backing tracks on an iPad in StageTraxx 3, but I'm only using the headphone out. Tracks on left, click/cues on right. With multitracks, I can mute or unmute as needed without needing different version of backing track files. This way if I'm practicing, I've got drums, bass and all backing tracks on. If I'm with a full band, I can mute drums and bass. If I have a drummer, but no bass player, mute drums, but unmute bass. This also gives me the flexibility to add an audio interface down the road. EDIT - I see you covered this at the end of the video.
If you didn't want the sound guy to be able to remix your tracks, you can always mix them on your XR and send them to an aux for FOH. And that was a great tip on how you switch from multi track to single! Great stuff, as always.
Scott, you make the BEST informative videos. Thanks for all your hard work. You and Electric Viking are my RUclips go-tos. My new Line6 HX Stomp is no longer a mystery thanks to you.
Hi Scott thanks for the very informative videos. Q. At 25:00 you've decided to pan the multitracks backing hard left and cue hard right. Do you have a global setting on ST3 that applies to all the tracks in the playlist maybe or do you have to do this process for each track on your setlist?
I personally did this for each song, but now with the updated version of stage Traxx I no longer have to do the panning and i can automatically route it where I need to go: Stage Traxx 3 - Part 4 - NEW UPDATES/FEATURES! ruclips.net/video/JQurzHDFxpw/видео.html
Hey Scott sorry if this has been asked already Ive scrolled as much as I can scroll ha ha If the IPAD only has the lightning port, no audio jack will those apple lightning to headphone jack adaptors work just as well?
You’re right about mp3 quality, but there is a slight cpu advantage to use PCM files like wav, there’s nothing for the cpu to decode, it’s all just streaming through the audio subsystem. The overhead is slight, but remember that you have 5-6 tracks, so you multiply this overhead. Still maybe not noticeable it your iPad could handle many more streams simultaneously in PCM than compressed audio.
Scott I know ultimately mono fits pretty much all applications but I have a question. When you export from the DAW do you export it as one stereo file with the click and tracks panned to opposite sides? Or do you export one mono file?
Great stuff!! Thank you!! Regarding the crosstalk, I had the same issue. My tracks are built on Garage Band, Mastered on AudioMaster App. In Garageband, there is a ECHO and REVERB that applies globally, so what happens is any of the LEFT panned tracks with effect added will end up bleeding the effect onto the RIGHT with the click. In closing, check the effects routing.
Just found this channel and it's great. I'm thinking about adopting backing tracks+click with IEM. With Windows platform (laptop/tablet) I have configured simple 5.1 USB sound card as 6-channel output interface instead of Track Rig. That way I can have stereo backing track + click/cues separated for PA (front L/R output) and IEM (center/bass output) mapped from a single Cakewalk project. Tnx!
Great channel! Thanks for the tips. My question...What size ipad storage would you recommend buying if I wanted to put all my tracks on it, taking into consideration that I'm constantly creating and adding more track files.
Hi! Thanks for everything ! You re amazing.!! 🙏 ive a question. I ve my bt ready using tablet android. Do you know a app to do this? This one is only for ios... thank you
As usual, a very interesting video to see what your gigging methods are. We are free to take what we find useful for our own gigs... knowledge has this wonderful propriety : you still have it once you gave it to others ;)
Great video. Need to clearify this, though. I have a Mac book pro. Shall I connect my computer to my interface with both a usb-c and a 3,5 mm/split cable?
Great video! Question, my band currently uses the single file set up. I usually build the set in my DAW and just hit play at the beginning of the set and stop at the end. We are thinking of moving away from DAW/computer setup to make the sets a little more free flowing. We use an iPad with multitracker for practices. I was wondering if you would recommend using a Bluetooth transmitter connected to the iPad, then hardwired to the mixer, to run tracks. I'm the guitar player and would be controlling the multitracker app from the iPad connected to my mic stand and am just looking to eliminate another cable on the ground.
Thanks! And you can do that for sure. There is a risk with doing it wirelessly or Bluetooth that they could cut out, that’s possible… as long as you accept that risk. But I do think that laptop is overkill for just doing a single file method without any midi or lighting, etc. definitely will make your life easier 🤘
3:15 you said click track is routed to iems but with this only backing tracks and click tracks will be heard and the live sound mix will not be heard so how to route so that click ,backing tracks and the live mix of the real-time musicians comes from the iems;
Great video and really information yet again Scott. I use Garage band as my DAW and Multitracker 2.2 on an iPad with two DI boxes and a Behringer Xenyx 802S mixing desk. We send the drummer the click and the FOH the tracks but we always seem to get crosstalk from the click despite it being panned to the right from the DAW and on the Desk. The splitter cable is the RED one for the click so not sure why this is happening? Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated Pal. TIA
Thanks! And some people say they have that problem, but I don’t know why. I would check the cable and/or the DAW to make sure it’s panning properly. If it’s not truly very audible I wouldn’t worry too much about it
Hi, first of all I wanted to congratulate you on your videos.... Really interesting, well done and educational. My need is for live use with my band. 20 years ago I was using a pc with a m audio firewire 410 with which I used to manage stereo backing tracks, drummer clicks + vst instruments played live, all driven by cubase. Now it's been 20 years (in which I've been away from gigs) and I'm undecided on what to buy. I have 3 macbook pro's at home so I could use one of them for audio. I don't need to record: I just want to be able to manage backing tracks and simultaneously play vst instruments live (using main stage or gig performer or something... I'll have to look into that too). So I'll need at least 4 outputs (using the backing tracks in mono on one channel and the click on another channel + 2 stereo channels for vst). The idea is to get a soundcard that I can then also use in the future if I decide to switch to ipad (to lighten up the equipment). I also need to connect at least two keyboards via midi, and this I could do by adding a usb hub. I also need traditional midi inputs because I have an old keyboard that doesn't send control changes via USB but only via the midi outputs (although I could probably use a midi to USB cable). Currently what sound cards do you feel like recommending for the use I need? Thanks in advance
Thanks! And if you get one of the newer MacBook pros you should be fine with doing a few outputs and VSTs for sure. I don’t know what the exact requirements are, but the new ones are really powerful. I run my whole show off an old MacBook currently.
Hi, is there any chance to use the single file method, but hear some of the tracks in the clic/cues channel for just monitoring proposes? Thank you so much, this is so helpful!!
I have backing tracks for various songs. I'm looking for a way, while I'm on stage, to select an individual songs backing track and play it and synchronize it to the lyrics of the song.
Scott, Question...to get sound file from ipad to the mixer you're using a splitter cable and that Direct Box. Is it possible to use an extension and connect each 1/4" from the splitter, directly into channels on the mixer, thus, bypassing the Direct Box? Then these channels get mixed into the AUX outs/monitor/IEMs.
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks Scott....FYI i purchased this cable a week or so ago. ruclips.net/video/6bLOjmY--TA/видео.html Today, I set up my mixer and used the cable connecting the iPad to the MR18. I routed the signals to Master out R&L as well as Aux 1 (monitor/iem) and it worked perfectly. So I won't be using a DI box. Last thing...I'm not that familiar with using a DAW, but a few months ago, after extensive research, I decided I was going to commit to Reaper. Now that my band is exploring backing tracks, I found your site online, and watched with interest, your A-Z video on making backing Tracks. You use CuBase...Your instructions are all most move for move and now I'm thinking of using Cubase to make backing tracks because I have your video to follow step by step. I'm looking for a similar video of someone using reaper, but haven't found one. I guess I'm hoping by some miracle, you switch to Reaper and make a new video on how to make / mix backing tracks using Reaper. I plan to bounce an MP2 or wav file to Stage Traxx 3 on my ipad, then get the file into the mix as I explained above. Your videos have been a tremendous help.
Interested to hear whether you prefer a standalone device like the B.Beat to an Ipad. I've tried Stagetraxx 3 from my ipad pro and had a few issues now and then. The worst was the USB C to audio adaptor developing a fault 3 songs into a show (luckily i had a spare). I've just bought a B.Beat 128gb to try for my next few gigs.
Both are definitely great options! There is no right or wrong answer. I do like stage Traxx for cover stuff and ableton for my original music. But I’m trying to upgrade to BBeat possibly
@ScottUhlMusic , mine is all original material. I don't fancy having my macbook on stage at all, because I t3nd to run around a lot and I'm always playing scuzzy little places with tiny stages. The ipad is worth as much as the mac, but it's in a decent case and a bit more robust. The B.Beat looks like the perfect solution interms of multiple outputs, fewer adapters to break, and it's smaller, probably less fragile and definitely much cheaper than my apple stuff if it gets damaged.
I'm glad that somebody made a video like this, really helpful !!! I'm wondering though, because I have a Focusrite 18i8 1st gen and I want to run backing tracks from my laptop (running reaper) what are the things I have to do in order to make it work ?
Hey Scott love the videos ,learned a lot. I have a xr18 mixer and mixing station, and would like to use a Korg nanokantrol2 ,that I am trying to use only for fader control, any insight would be appreciated,,thanks
Wudnt it make more sense to have a nice mixed track (with synths n things panned as per our taste) n sending it to channel 1/2 on output audio interface n sending cues n click track on channel 3/4 and running the whole thing on logic or mainstage itself?
I use a Klark Teknik DN9630 and route tracks through my AES50 B. It’s very portable and gives you way more channels than the Trackrig. You can route up to 32 in/ 48 out
Thank you. Awesome video. If you are you are using the splitter method, can you set the tracks so that you can have minimal space between them when performing live?
Thanks! What do you mean minimal space? You mean between songs? Yeah, just stop the track at the end when mixing it down and don’t leave a bunch of space after the song is over
So I’m guessing you could use a soundcraft signature 12 and control separate tracks with the faders thru usb although the overall output will be stereo
Hi!!! I'm using the L and R approach to route the click and the musical track. The issue is that in same parts of the song I can hear the click coming out from the main speakers. I've double checked the panning in the file and it's 100% to the Left the click and 100% to the right for the backing track. I'm using AUDACITY as an editing tool for the files. Any piece of advice would be appreciated. You rock with these videos. Cheers!
Man, I really need to research this because I hear this a lot. But check the cable and check to make sure the plugins are not on the files or anything like that (although im not sure audacity has it)… that’s my best advice I have for it until I look into it further because I don’t have this problem
@@ScottUhlMusic hi Scott I got the answer!!! Why there is cross taking on a backing track file with the click panned to the opposite side of the instruments?? Drum roll🥁. It's the quality of the sound card in the device.. Example Apple devices no problem. Some Samsung devices - low end modules- you will have issues. Same with tables... it's not your editing tool like protocols or audacity. It's the device! Please guys send your comments Thanks a lot!!! Cheers from Hollywood CA.
Another INCREDIBLE backing track video! Thank you for the valuable information. Yes, it's true that the CYMATIC AUDIO LP-16 is discontinued but it is also true that now the device is even more sought after and the prices have gone up for them. Many world touring bands are using them. MANY IEM rigs on RUclips are using them. KAMELOT uses the Cymatic Audio uTrack24. I think your audience (and myself) would LOVE to see you do a full review on either Cymatic device. I also think you (Scott Uhl) would enjoy the Cymatic device. Thank you for your time and consideration. Love your Spiral Cell music and the mask of course!
Thanks! I appreciate it, and thanks for checking out Spiral Cell :) I think the B Beat is the better option since the company is still around. That’s cool that Kamelot is still using it though! But I likely wouldn’t be able to review a product that is hard to find/buy now. I appreciate the suggestion 🤘
Hi Scott, this is a really good video and very informative and user friendly. PLEASE can you help with either a video or a description of how I can do the following; I am a guitarist and vocalist, and I have a drummer and a bassist - I have written lots of music that I want to play live - we have backing tracks that comprise of keyboards, rhythm guitar and backing vocals - we need a click track as we are basically playing along to a song - I purchased a budget IEM so all of us can use it. What is the set up and what accessories do I need to buy - we use logic and GarageBand - I have a MacBook . Do I come out of the Mac and use the splitter and Di still? Where does the IEM box fit in? What do I need to get to make this work - simply and on a budget? Thank you for any advice 🙏
Thanks! Glad you’ve enjoyed the videos. So THIS video should answer those questions for you. Like I mentioned in the video, the iPad represents what is controlling the backing tracks (can be a tablet, phone, or laptop). The direct box represents where I’m sending the TRACKS signal to, and the Headphone amp is where I’m routing the CLICK signal to. Yours might be different but the idea is the same. If you need help setting up an IEM rack, this video should help: ruclips.net/video/XQjFhkQTVP8/видео.htmlsi=VC8vgBWkCSnNn2-D
I use an XR18. What I do is export tracks from Logic and add them to channels within MainStage. Click, Cues, and FOH track sounds using the playback plugin on each channel in the song in MainStage. Then with XR18 connected to computer as an audio interface I set the inputs to USB. Then I can control the individual tracks in the XR18 for separate musician mixes. Etc. Aux 6 out is for the FOH tracks. Then I use MainStage to run the show and move between songs.
@@ScottUhlMusic thank you. Watching your other videos on doing the same thing with an iPad and app is making me rethink whether the laptop is overkill or not. I guess at the end of the day they’re both performing the same functions. I am using main stage, whereas you are using stage traxx on the iPad. Am I not considering some thing?
Scott heeeelp we have the x32 rack and the sennheiser in ear system. I cannot figure out how to get the click on in the in ears. Tried many ports on the x32. Where do I route the clicks if we want everyones in ears to hear it?
@ScottUhlMusic Thanks Scott, looks like you say to plug the click directly into the mixer. I'm unsure which port that is referring to, and if I still need to use the di box. Thanks!!
THANK YOU for this, seriously!! Ok this might be a stupid question but, where did you get that click sound? Its nice and clear but not too obnoxious. I use the logic metronome as click and it always gets lost in the mix.
Do you have seperate stage monitors for the backing track while the clicktrack is in the IEMs? Or does the front of house send back a monitor mix which goes back to your in ear system? I am asking, because we are 2-piece wedding combo an we bring our own equipment. But I love the idea of have a click track and cues. I do understand i should seperate click track and the playback and send with hard left and right to either in ear and to the sound system. But how do I actually hear the playback AND the click track?
Yeah that’s just with the IEM routing. I send everything to our mixer, and then playback goes to FOH and then click/cues only goes to our IEM aux sends 👍
I've noticed on Behringer x32s that the main stereo output has cross talk. I've also noticed a quality shift when you link channels but haven't dug deeper. I wouldn't be surprised if some devices with stereo channels bleed from one too another. If it's possible maybe try making sure the channels are set to mono. I've also noticed in Shure psm900s in mix mode.
@@ScottUhlMusic I am getting one, but you have that special touch to bring out the best features on the products you evaluate. I am using this as my all inclusive gigging and streaming platform. I dream to stream and with this, I won't have to scream!
Hey Scott, awesome video once again! I started using Multitracker once I saw your video, but would really love to use Stage Traxx 3 because it offers way more features I can use. The only reason I haven't is because ST3 doesn't offer the option to create tracks with a click (like Multitracker does). This is important for my band because we only use backing tracks on about 5 songs, the rest we use the click to keep the in check as far as the tempo goes. Anyway sorry for venting 😅, just hope ST3 adds in that feature soon. It would really be a major plus! Thanks again!
It's actually pretty simple to create/export a click track. I do it in Reaper but I'm sure all the other Draws can do this: Set your Daw metronome how you like it then route it to an empty track that is set to record. Export that track as {click.mp3} along with your other stems. Easy Peasy, and maybe Scott can include that in a vid if he hasn't already--I'm still working my way thru all of them 😂
this is an amazing channel. I am a career old school pianist/keyboardist and have been recently asked to play in a duo but asked to run tracks, which I have never done before. So your channel has been amazing. I have a dumb question. Being a pianist I get asked for requests all the time. Most of the time I know them, if I don't I can work fudge through them by whacking chords/lyrics up on my iphone (great for tips) Would you ever do a request if you dont have the track available, eg. just acoustically? I was thinking of even just having a track with a kick drum as I can cover the bass, chords on piano and vocals!
Yeah we’ve done that before for sure 👍 we get as far as we can anyways. It usually goes well if people want to hear it and they often sing along with it. Glad the channel has been so helpful 🤘
I’m extremely new to this (haven’t use backing tracks yet) and I definitely leaning towards the 1 file system. My question is: How do you guys setup to hear the rest of your band?
Super helpful. I'm just getting started with using backing tracks in our band.
Great to hear!
Oh nice!! Yeah that’s a great combination 🤘🤘
Your channel is a gem!! You make complicated stuff simple - and that's rare! Keep it up!
I appreciate that!
Exactly, very rare,
Great video, Scott!
Thanks for the tutorial. I like hearing about different ways of doing stuff.
Thanks for watching 🤘
I've been scouring the internet for the best single file click track setup option, this was by far and away the easiest and most budget conscious setup, and explained the best as well. Thanks a ton.
Glad it helped!
THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge with us!
Glad it was helpful!
Cheers
Yup! I do the same thing now and I love it
Thanks! I’m amazed how many of your videos I come back to over and over as reference. Please keep it up and thanks
Thanks man! I sincerely appreciate that, that’s really generous of you! 🤘🤘🤘 glad you’ve enjoyed the channel!
Hi Scott thanks for all your videos if I use the direct box and the backing goes to front of house that is in mono ? No stereo backing Gr.Ness
If you use that first method, it’s mono. To get stereo you’ll need multitracking
excellent bit of information
Thank you 😊
Thanks for all your help and always answering questions, you've really demystified a lot of this stuff and got me up and running quickly. Much appreciated! Cheers
Thanks man! I appreciate it! I’m glad you found the video so helpful 🤘
I love your videos so much. Thank you for doing what you do.
Thank you 😊
Have to say Scott these tutorials have been a mind of information. They have helped me a lot prepare my own backing tracks to play along with. Thank you
Great to hear! 🤘
Nice man! Awesome 🤘 glad you’ve found the channel helpful!
Very nice. I use a 7.1 soundcard. And have the front of house on front channel in stereo. And the click and or other on the other channels.
Oh nice!
Excellent informative stuff as usual Scott, thanks!
Thanks again for watching!
Thank you! I appreciate that. And yeah, gotta get straight to it at the beginning. It’s important!
Great video! the hybrid method is the best and easier regarding control and less cables...I use Prime with separated stems but use the Y cable (click/tracks) going out of the iPad...
Nice! I’m glad Prime can do that too 🤘
Great video, Scott.
I can’t find SoundCue in the App Store. Is it still available?
I could not find it some years after I downloaded it. For my back-up iPad I went with Stage Traxx3. It has some interesting features over SoundCue.
Sound Cue IMO presents itself in a more straight forward manner and is simple to use. Otherwise Stage Traxx3 will get the job done.
@@johnstraley9057 thanks for the info!! Looks like I’ll be going with stage Traxx 3 then!
Lots of helpfull info, thanks a lot
Glad it was helpful!
a lot of times, when bleed from click/cues makes it into the backing tracks (with the single file method), it's because we either didn't pan the respective tracks 100% to both sides, OR we accidentally left some reverb or something on the master channel when creating the backing tracks... not sure if this may be what some people are experiencing with this issue, but we specifically had some bleed from the click because we left a reverb on the master when setting up tracks on a few songs.
Yeah that’s what I’ve found. Often times it’s some sort of stereo fx or something 👍
Nice! That sounds very similar to the way I do it with my 90s cover band 🤘🤘
Excellent information as usual. Thank you! 👊🏻🥁🤘🏻
Thanks!
Thanks for the sub and like! 🤘🤘🤘
@@ScottUhlMusic Annnnd...you're responsive AF. Cheers to something so rare yet so valuable, brother 🍻
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful
can you run the click/cue track and the front of house mix into a small mixer and then go to your in ear monitoring so you can hear both?
Yup you can do that if you don’t have your own split/control over your ears. I’ve done that for some travel gigs
could you do the same thing with a dual DI box?
New favourite channel right here. This guy is reading mind!!
Thanks Alex 🤘
You are my hero, man. I cannot thank you enough!
🤘🤘🤘
This is awesome. Thanks bro!
Hey Scott, what’s the benefit of using the DI box as opposed to just going audio output from the iPad into a mono XLR splitter?
You don’t need the DI box. But if you are sending the signal to FOH or longer cable runs, direct boxes are almost usually the way to go 👍 I need to do a video on “do you need a direct box” because I get that question often
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks for the answer, Scott, that’s all good to know
man... this info is gold.. thanks so much
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent as usual, Scott! My tried-and-true way is doing the single-file solution, but I always like to get your take on this stuff, just to see if there's anything I'm not thinking of.
Yeah man, that corporate band has been doing it that way for like a decade. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
I surely will use them when the time comes :)
Thanks a lot for your channel again!
I don’t know the best place to start for video editing, but one of my favorite channels is DylanJohnDickerson for Final Cut editing tips
Yup! Such a great way to do it 🤘🤘
Thanks for the video! Have a great day.
Thanks, you too!
If you didn't want the sound guy to be able to remix your tracks, you can always mix them on your XR and send them to an aux for FOH. And that was a great tip on how you switch from multi track to single! Great stuff, as always.
That’s actually a great idea!
Dang it Scott has the best vids on every topic he does!!!💪🏽😎🏝️

Hi Scott thanks for the very informative videos. Q. At 25:00 you've decided to pan the multitracks backing hard left and cue hard right. Do you have a global setting on ST3 that applies to all the tracks in the playlist maybe or do you have to do this process for each track on your setlist?
I personally did this for each song, but now with the updated version of stage Traxx I no longer have to do the panning and i can automatically route it where I need to go: Stage Traxx 3 - Part 4 - NEW UPDATES/FEATURES!

Hey Scott sorry if this has been asked already Ive scrolled as much as I can scroll ha ha
If the IPAD only has the lightning port, no audio jack will those apple lightning to headphone jack adaptors work just as well?
Yup 👍 definitely!
Absolutely brilliant vid thank you 🙏
Thanks!
Oh interesting…. I didn’t know that! Thanks for sharing man. I appreciate it 🤘
Thanks Scott!!! You are such a cool dude.
Awwwww shucks 🥹 Thanks Tiffany. You ready to be on an episode??
@@ScottUhlMusic sure am! :) I’d be honored!!!!

This was super helpful going with option one
Scott I know ultimately mono fits pretty much all applications but I have a question. When you export from the DAW do you export it as one stereo file with the click and tracks panned to opposite sides? Or do you export one mono file?
Definitely export as a stereo file 👍
Great stuff!! Thank you!! Regarding the crosstalk, I had the same issue. My tracks are built on Garage Band, Mastered on AudioMaster App. In Garageband, there is a ECHO and REVERB that applies globally, so what happens is any of the LEFT panned tracks with effect added will end up bleeding the effect onto the RIGHT with the click. In closing, check the effects routing.
Yes that’s a great point!
@@ScottUhlMusichi, found on PC and smartphone that just disabling dolby effect will fix the crosstalk
Thanks! And at least 64g to be safe. Use 320 mp3s to save on space 👍
Hey Scott
Where do you send your instruments that you play? FOH or through the mixer with the click/backing track then to front of house?
I use karaoke version personally
Hi! Thanks for everything ! You re amazing.!! 🙏 ive a question. I ve my bt ready using tablet android. Do you know a app to do this? This one is only for ios... thank you
Thanks! And I believe Band Helper is available on android
As usual, a very interesting video to see what your gigging methods are. We are free to take what we find useful for our own gigs... knowledge has this wonderful propriety : you still have it once you gave it to others ;)
Thank you 😊
Great video. Need to clearify this, though. I have a Mac book pro. Shall I connect my computer to my interface with both a usb-c and a 3,5 mm/split cable?
For a computer? Likely you just go into your interface
Ok, thanks. So I only need to connect my computer to the interface with a USB-c cable?
Is the other option (3,5 mm) to a directbox?
3:15 you said click track is routed to iems but with this only backing tracks and click tracks will be heard and the live sound mix will not be heard so how to route so that click ,backing tracks and the live mix of the real-time musicians comes from the iems;
I have a video about setting up your iem rack here: ruclips.net/video/XQjFhkQTVP8/видео.htmlsi=vDvYKiVZL07L9pJ2
If it’s not truly very audible I wouldn’t worry too much about it
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks Scott. Keep the vids coming 🙌
Hi Scott, do you have a link to the Direct Box?
Any direct box will work 👍
Ok I have the iPad, Track Rig, and the app for the iPad. So your thought how I send the tracks to the drummer and keyboard player.
That would be with in ear monitors 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic which audio interfaces would you suggest to handle vst and backing tracks?
It’s not the audio interface, it’s the computer that is important. For an interface, just make sure it has the number of inputs and outputs you need
Hi, is there any chance to use the single file method, but hear some of the tracks in the clic/cues channel for just monitoring proposes? Thank you so much, this is so helpful!!
Yeah, you can do that 👍 either by mixing your IEMs as such, or pan the tracks centered (just make sure the levels are good)
I have backing tracks for various songs. I'm looking for a way, while I'm on stage, to select an individual songs backing track and play it and synchronize it to the lyrics of the song.
Check out my videos on stage Traxx 3 👍
Scott, Question...to get sound file from ipad to the mixer you're using a splitter cable and that Direct Box. Is it possible to use an extension and connect each 1/4" from the splitter, directly into channels on the mixer, thus, bypassing the Direct Box? Then these channels get mixed into the AUX outs/monitor/IEMs.
I have a video specifically on that here: ruclips.net/video/9aS976GdBMI/видео.htmlsi=zeJXXZ3WgJJ3eUA-
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks Scott....FYI i purchased this cable a week or so ago. ruclips.net/video/6bLOjmY--TA/видео.html Today, I set up my mixer and used the cable connecting the iPad to the MR18.
Thanks! And using the steps I go over in this video will be the same idea, just have to route the outputs in reaper
Do how do u get the tracks etc to the drummer and bassist.

Hey Scott love the videos ,learned a lot. I have a xr18 mixer and mixing station, and would like to use a Korg nanokantrol2 ,that I am trying to use only for fader control, any insight would be appreciated,,thanks
Yeah you definitely can. Xr18 can be controlled with midi 👍
Wudnt it make more sense to have a nice mixed track (with synths n things panned as per our taste) n sending it to channel 1/2 on output audio interface n sending cues n click track on channel 3/4 and running the whole thing on logic or mainstage itself?
You can do either 👍 there is no right or wrong, just what works for you
I use a Klark Teknik DN9630 and route tracks through my AES50 B. It’s very portable and gives you way more channels than the Trackrig. You can route up to 32 in/ 48 out
Oh nice! That thing is awesome! I might have to get that for when I do tracks with the X32. A bit pricy, but thanks for bringing it to my attention!
@@ScottUhlMusic you can also use it in the reverse for recording!
I haven’t used that product, so I’m not sure
Love your videos man
Thank you!
Can you send multi track stems to different outputs in Studio one as well or only in ableton?
Yup, basically any DAW should be able to do this. Never used Studio One but you very very likely will be able to 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic hi Scott
I got the answer!!! Why there is cross taking on a backing track file with the click panned to the opposite side of the instruments??
Drum roll🥁. It's the quality of the sound card in the device.. Example
Apple devices no problem.
Some Samsung devices - low end modules- you will have issues.
Same with tables... it's not your editing tool like protocols or audacity. It's the device!
Please guys send your comments
Thanks a lot!!!
This is great, but how do you run the click to multiple musicians on stage using IEM? We’ve got a Behringer x air 12 mixer
You run the click into one of the channels of the mixer and only send it out to the aux outputs, which go to the iems of the musicians
@@ScottUhlMusic ah great stuff Scott that’s great! Couldn’t figure it out 🤦🏻♂️ thank you 🙏🏻
Hi Scott, this is a really good video and very informative and user friendly. PLEASE can you help with either a video or a description of how I can do the following;
I am a guitarist and vocalist, and I have a drummer and a bassist - I have written lots of music that I want to play live - we have backing tracks that comprise of keyboards, rhythm guitar and backing vocals - we need a click track as we are basically playing along to a song - I purchased a budget IEM so all of us can use it.
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks again - I will watch again and check out the other vid - all the best
Hey SCott! Great vid! Where are you getting your backing tracks from?
Thanks! And I use karaoke version
Nice! Great setup 🤘
@@joed873 here’s my video on how to set that up: ruclips.net/video/XQjFhkQTVP8/видео.htmlsi=kpYmiDHWBTYj5ZOa
Thanks! And a former band mate had that for me, can’t remember how he made it
Do you have seperate stage monitors for the backing track while the clicktrack is in the IEMs? Or does the front of house send back a monitor mix which goes back to your in ear system? I am asking, because we are 2-piece wedding combo an we bring our own equipment. But I love the idea of have a click track and cues. I do understand i should seperate click track and the playback and send with hard left and right to either in ear and to the sound system. But how do I actually hear the playback AND the click track?
Yeah that’s just with the IEM routing. I send everything to our mixer, and then playback goes to FOH and then click/cues only goes to our IEM aux sends 👍
Damn dude, you made that way more simple than I was expecting ☠️☠️☠️
🤘🤘🤘
I've noticed on Behringer x32s that the main stereo output has cross talk. I've also noticed a quality shift when you link channels but haven't dug deeper. I wouldn't be surprised if some devices with stereo channels bleed from one too another. If it's possible maybe try making sure the channels are set to mono.
I've also noticed in Shure psm900s in mix mode.
I need to investigate cross talk more. I just don’t have a problem with it…
Great video. Have you evaluated the new Boss Gigcaster 8? If so, what do you think? Are you doing a video on this?
Thanks! And can you save files onto the GC8? I thought it was just for live streaming and stuff like that?
@@ScottUhlMusic Yes you can save your mix or individual channels on a micro SD card.
Ah gotcha, that makes sense. I just export my own click because I like to do double time changes and stuff like that personally
My question is:
How do you guys setup to hear the rest of your band?
I personally use an in ear monitor system, but you can also use wedges if just the drummer gets the click and everyone else gets the tracks
